Record of pioneers in self sufficiency, Helen and Scott Nearing.
Helen and Scott Nearing began growing all their own food and chopping firewood nearly 50 years ago. Now people come from all over the place to see what they are doing. At 74 and 93, the Nearings, pacifists and vegetarians, have just built a large stone home, by hand, and shine like children in this intimate visit. In spite of the incredible achievements, they still find time for writing and discussions with local people, as well as music making and relaxation and they enjoy every minute. U.S.A.
This film is of historical interest and reflects the cultural attitudes of the country in which it was made and language of the time it was made. But the issues raised are timeless.

Scott Nearing was an extraordinary human being. He saw life through the same eyes as Peace Pilgrim.

Scott and Helen belonged to our Good Life Get Together, homesteaders gathering once a year in upstate N.Y..Scott was to sick to attend our final year. Tho I did not agree with his political views, I enjoyed their warmth and knowledge....and still miss them.

I don't claim to be wiser or less wise than anyone else. I think though that it's important to try to understand the intentions and spirit of people and what that implies about their character.

Do not agree with political views of these people but I like them. What they promote other then that is great.

I don’t agree with anything that restricts the very thing that made the Nearing’s life’s possible and that’s a freedom to choice without a totalitarian system or regime implementing rules and laws to prevent those choices.

Living the Good Life took some of the heat off the fact that Scott never saw the USSR and the enslavement of the peoples of Russia and eastern Europe as anything but a beautiful implementation of "socialism". The columns of "World Events", which he wrote for Monthly Review in the 1950's and 1960's, attest to this. Though he had not been, for many years, a member of the CPUSA, his views on Stalin and then Khruschev and also Mao (before the Sino-Soviet split) were virtually identical with the line of the party. His differences with them were largely arcane, theoretical matters.
