  • I SURVIVED Exploring An ABANDONED Military Hospital on Angel Island!
Angel Island, located in San Francisco Bay, has a diverse and significant history:
    1. **Indigenous Inhabitants**: Originally, the island was used by the Coastal Miwok people for thousands of years as a hunting and fishing site.
    2. **Spanish Exploration**: In the 18th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the area. Juan de Ayala, a Spanish naval officer, anchored in Ayala Cove in 1775, marking the island's first recorded European visit.
    3. **Military Use**: In the mid-19th century, during the Civil War, the U.S. Army established Camp Reynolds on the island as a base to defend San Francisco Bay. Later, it served various military purposes, including as a quarantine station for bubonic plague victims in the early 20th century.
    4. **Immigration Station**: From 1910 to 1940, Angel Island operated as an immigration station, often called the "Ellis Island of the West." It processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants, mainly from Asia. The island is known for the harsh and discriminatory treatment many Chinese immigrants faced under the Chinese Exclusion Act. Detained immigrants carved poems into the barracks walls, expressing their hardships and hopes.
    5. **World War II**: During World War II, the island served as a detention center for Japanese, German, and Italian POWs. It also acted as a processing center for troops returning from the Pacific Theater.
    6. **State Park**: After the war, the island's military functions diminished. In 1954, it was transferred to the state of California and eventually became Angel Island State Park in 1963. The park preserves the island's history and offers recreational activities.
Today, Angel Island is a historic site and a popular destination for visitors interested in its natural beauty and rich history.

The bars might indicate where unruly mentally ill patients were housed. Some of the buildings look similar to an old vets building that was torn down on Central State Hospital grounds. It was once the largest mental hospital in the world. There are some youtube videos about the hospital.

Can you only imagine dark stormy nights there? What would an overnight stay be like there?

Probably pretty crazy I do believe they have people living over there in some of the refurbished quarters like the park rangers because it is a California park.
