Talking about why they didnt get more popular: They were on the edge of having their big breakthrough (Touring with Metallica in Australia, for example) but the bandmembers had mixed feelings about getting really big. Coming from this really small and undergound desertscene, some of the members wanted to keep it that way. And also Josh Homme, the guitar player, wanted something different for himself. He went creatively in a different direction and started "Queens of the Stone Age". So, they disbanded before they hit big succes.... and that way Kyuss become a legend
And according to several stories Homme turned into a total douche when the remaining members wanted to continue with Kyuss. It got pretty ugly and ended up in court. Lost all interest in anything Homme has been involved in after Kyuss.
@@corey1788 well, I think as always there's two sides of the story... When Garcia went on to perform Kyuss-Songs in 2010 Homme was alright with it and there's even video-footage where he was hanging out backstage at a festival where Garcia performed and he nodded his head to the music. There are other songs where Garcia's vocals are mixed more in the foreground, but this just sounds like the band is playing _right here_ while Garcia's _over there_ in the kitchen yelling from the adjacent room. But it just works. They're often described as sounding like a sandstorm, and this song is a great example for this. The warm, calm intro, the sudden burst of raspy sand blasting into your face followed by the calm after the storm when nothing is left but serenity and warmth. Also, Tool covered this band before. I've had a live bootleg from Tool playing Demon Cleaner over 15 years ago. I think the comparisons are fine. A last bit of trivia: they recorded this album in a few days, and the record company kept bugging them that they should produce a single that they could play on the radio and market to people. But the band wasn't interested in playing by the rules imposed on them, so when this album first released, it had only 3 "suites", each comprised of multiple songs and each much too long for a single release. Josh Homme still laughs when he remembers the faces of the record company's representatives.

As others have said the last part was a bonus track, on the CD there is a ton of silence before that before it kicks in. Would love to see some Corrosion of Conformity at some point, a big stonerish band you're missing! Great video as always.
Dude absolutely. It’s so hard to find good groove metal. I haven’t found anything tk matches up to kyuss especially this specific song. There is nothing like this song that makes me want to hear bang but also dance sexy from the groove
The sound of Kyuss was "cultivated" They had their thing that was influenced by the Joshua Tree scene at the time. A friend / producer, Chris Goss basically shepherded them through their albums as he did not want them to lose the the "sound" they had and become "commercial". He was successful, a pretty unique band that inspired dozens of copycats, but was never commercially successful. Eventually Josh Homme became disillusioned with having to be tied to "the sound" and left to form Queens of the Stone Age later. Another great band.
You just need to listen to Wretch to hear what they sound like without Goss: Someone forcing Homme to not use a bass head and tune to an E instead of C.
The bit at the end is comparable to skits on older rap records. If you're interested in more Stoner Rock I recommend Colout Haze or Windhand if you fancy a badass female singer.
Love Kyuss, they were so good live. Really mindblowing stupidly good. It was the first time I heard of them actually.. I accidently saw them playing and was like.. I'm not leavin this! Oh and Muse - Knights of Cydonia.
Lick My Doo is a joke song at the end of the album. It's not part of Whitewater. It's the only track by itself. The rest of the album is 3 songs per track.
In 94' I lived in Idyllwild and worked in Hemet and then Palm Desert. This absolutely fits in with how life in Palm Desert was! So glad you did this, the only other time I've heard Kyuss was your Gardenia reaction, as it brought back some old "feelings" I had forgotten about 🤘
Just wanted to give you guys credit for turning me on to this band. I've known of Kyuss for many, many years but I'm not the biggest fan of the genre they're associated with, so I never really gave them a chance. I'm glad you reacted to their songs.
I’ve been checking out a couple of yalls videos and talk/review music that when I first listened to it took me a while to get into, understand, etc., but y’all make succinct commentary and really intuitive analysis and I’m subscribing, kudos dudes
So glad that you are doing Kyuss again. If you want to go on a trip check out the song "Space Cadet" from Kyuss. It is pretty mellow but you will get lost in it. Thanks guys
The listening instructions for the album are a great direction for you to get lost in this music. "listen without distraction". You let it wash over you like the raw power and chaos of white water, and as it gets to the end of its journey the energy starts to dissipate leaving you awash in a lake of serenity.
Other stoner bands to check out: 1. Sleep 2. The Sword 3. Orange Goblin 4. Baroness 5. King Wizard and the Lizard Gizzard Honorable mention- Trouble Just a few thrash metal bands you haven't checked out: Havok Municipal Waste Holy Grail At the Gates
The singer from Kyuss, John Garcia, was in a killer heavy band called Sloburn after this. Like an extra-heavy version of Kyuss. Only 6 songs released on that EP "Amusing the Amazing" but they are all amazing.
Yes man you got it again. Kyuss is the same family as Tool regarding creating vibes and painting musical pictures for us to dream away within... a different sort of picture, for me rougher for Kyuss and more pitoresque and detailed for Tool but same family. And also just to mention: you're just the best out there in musical reactions. I enjoy so much, thanks so much.
If you guys go through another stoner rock/metal month I have tons of recommendations that would be geared towards what you guys would enjoy. I think you would very much enjoy The Sword, anything off of "Warp Riders" is incredible.
Your comment was at the top oh my phone so I could only read the top line and my brain went 'I'm going to mention The Sword!!' I was so pleased to see them in your full post and extra pleased that you mentioned their magnum opus (opus if you like your stoner doom riffy with a bit of crunch!!) Check out Acid Mammoth!
@@Xammblu_Games I love Acid Mammoth! They are a newer find but everything I've heard is great. I know they have done a few of these but I was going to send these guys down the rabbit hole of Sleep, The Sword, Red Fang, Mastodon (idk where the hell they are getting their recommendations for Mastodon songs), Baroness, YOB, Mothership, Earthless, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, and Dozer just to name a few.
You should check out Demon Cleaner by Kyuss. It's off this same album. Tool covered the song a long time ago which is how I found out Kyuss existed in the first place, and glad I dived deeper into their catalog.
Adore this channel and have been a subscriber since there were just a few hundred thousand of us… but I am literally counting down the days until these two fall down the K-Pop rabbit hole. Specifically the rap side of it. What a day that will be 👀
Favourite band of all times for me. They were so well assembled. Four album of pure magic fuzz and trippy ways of enjoyng music. Here s my suggestions from other album. Freedom run. Gardenia. Cathamaran.
2009 Mac miller. Crazy how the songs so sneaky deep. So many signs that no one really saw before he died. 2009 he was just blowing up and having run with friends still not knowing how much his life was about to change and how he wanted to go back… it goes even deeper when you listen to the song “ One last thing” one blue slide park he closes it out with him saying how he just wanted to go back home
Blues For The Red Sun is their best album imho. 50 million year trip is their best song. Also Tool has covered Kyuss' "Demon Cleaner" which sounds exactly like Tool's song in that version.
Love you guys! If you're planning to get more into stoner rock, don't forget to go back to Clutch. The one track you picked is not entirely representative of their catalog because of how diverse their influences are. Conventional rock choice: "The Mob Goes Wild"; blues rock choice: "Electric Worry"; prog influenced: "Burning Beard".
Clutch is a good stoner metal band and there's another band I really like called uncle acid and the deadbeats. They opened for sabbath in England when they reunited for the album 13. They are interesting. Playing vintage instruments
Gotta give you guys credit. I'm a long-time metal fan and have always heard of these guys but never gave them the time of day for whatever reason. Y'all opened my eyes to a new band to dive into. Thanks, dudes! Also, i think that ending was supposed to be a "hidden track" sort of thing, still pretty bizarre though haha!
Best reaction I’ve seen from you boys in a while (maybe because it’s Kyuss…). George nailed it with his pure feeling of this song and the Tool-esque trance vibe it puts you into. On the flip side I find it weird that this deep into your journey into this world that Ryan is still thrown off by distortion/fuzz but that’s the joy of the joy of the pure listener reaction. I’d love to see you guys do Slo Burn - Pilot The Dune. Same singer as Kyuss, dare I say a bit more accessible but just generally a big banger (don’t worry Ryan it’s a little less fuzzy)
Please eventually react to those Kyuss songs mentioned in the beginning (Supa Scoopa, 50 Million year trip). And just like others mentioned, the final part was a hidden track which definitely isn’t part of the song.
Kyuss is great…this is where stoner metal begins. If you’re digging this, set up a Fu Manchu station on Pandora…you’ll get hammered with similar music. I discovered Truckfighters this way, and you’ll get a lot of Clutch too who are IMHO one of the best and most underrated bands of our time. Naturally, you’ll get a lot of Queens of the Store Age, probably the most commercially successful stoner bands. Josh Homme started out in Kyuss and ended up in QOTSA.You’re absolutely right about that Hendrix influence. It’s amazing, Hendrix has been dead over 50 years and still shaping musicians everywhere. Truly a rock legend! Tool is totally different thing, even of there’s a cross-appeal.
I love the atmosphere that kyuss creates. I can't get into the song writing and can get bored with the musicianship as well. Seems like they created an amazing sound and atmosphere. I wish they would have had at least a few songs where they wrote something truly amazing. Homme went on to write some of my favorite songs on other projects. Kyuss seems like a stepping stone to me.
To contribute to the heavy, distorted and "dirty" sound, the guitarist Josh Homme played through bass amp cabinets to facilitate the extra big bottom. Hoping you get back to them.
Check out Unida afterwards, it's the next project for many in Kyuss...It has some Fuzz in the Unida's early work, but no Fuzz in their later works, Sounds like pop-stoner rock
So, in the 90s its was pretty common to have tracks on CDs that were "hidden" in some fashion: unlisted in album notes and track listing (this was often compounded by having one or more "blank" tracks between the last listed track and the hidden track; IIRC Marilyn Mason did that with one of his CDs, putting a hidden song at track 99); some you had to "rewind" to before Track 1; and some were just tacked on at the end of tracks after a period of silence. You know how hi-hop artists did the skits on their disks between tracks? Same idea; this was rock and metal's version of it. Lick Doo should absolutely be considered a separate track/piece of music and not at all part of Whitewater. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_track
I'll try not to copy and paste this every time you guys do stoner rock. But - ELDER! Pretty please. Elder's a great example of where the stoner rock genre is at. Omens is a great example of their more progressive sound, Reflections (Sanctuary or Blind please) is a great example of their seamless blend of stoner and progressive, and Dead Roots Stirring is just pure stoner. As always, love what you both do.
@@Whispererinthenoise That's a great one. Pretty much everything from DRS is excellent. Keep doing what you're doing. They're bound to hear us eventually. I hope. Heh.
@@Lincolnzz I didn't really care for it at first, but it's growing on me. Not in all aspects. The vocals are still pretty meh. I don't like them on Embers, but I dig the vocals on In Procession. Plus Omens itself is one of their better tracks, period. Still, I like the chances they're taking and hopefully it helps their future sound.
IMO something off of Lore might be a better rec. Like LORE itself (they'd like the middle part a ton) or Legend or Deadweight. Every Lore track has that special Elder goosebump part
Just so you guys know, it was really common for underground 90s bands to slip secret tracks onto the actual songs because when you popped these CDs or tapes into advanced players you couldn't tell that there are extra songs that aren't listed on the sleeve So Lick Doo isn't actually Whitewater, it's an interlude
Fu Manchu’s “Werkin'” is the funkiest stoner metal song ever... or the grooviest, most metallic funk song ever... or the stoniest groove metal song ever. Mind Funk’s “Goddess” and Fudge Tunnel’s “Grey” are also in contention, and Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut” & Led Zep’s “Heartbreaker” go without saying.
The reason why you say it feels similar to tool it because they have movements similar to that of classical music. If you listen to classical music, you'll notice it has a similar feeling on how the music progresses. It builds up and has a climax, which is known as a crescendo
They're part of the same scene, there are small differences but Tool were a very similar heavy grunge band in the early days. Opiate and Undertow fit right into the heavy grunge and alternative sound of the early and mid 90s. Melvins, Tad, Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, Tool, Jane's Addiction, Kyuss, stuff like that. Tool has covered Kyuss lol, they used to play demon cleaner live. ruclips.net/video/Os6GQbymBig/видео.html
One thing that set Kyuss apart from other stoner metal bands is that they were more psychedelic/jam-based. Bands like Electric Wizard and Sleep tended to be slower and would settle into more consistent riffs/grooves. That fuzzy guitar tone is indeed THE signature sound for stoner rock. Very akin to wandering around in a haze of marijuana smoke, and the psychedelic, groovy, repetitive riffs play into that aesthetic too. It's true that this isn't well-produced by classic standards, but it very much creates its own unique atmosphere that you couldn't get with cleaner production. Kyuss definitely didn't get their due, but a major reason was that they only released albums for 4 years before splitting. They were definitely appreciated by those into underground alternative rock music, and by the time Homme came out with Queens of the Stone Age the world was finally ready for that sound. Of course, QOTSA also had more mainstream appeal with poppier hooks and cleaner production. That bit at the end, Lick Doo, was just a throwaway mini-track they used to close the album. For some reason, the original release of this album was split into 3 tracks, essentially treating the songs as suites. I think later releases did split up the songs into separate tracks, so I don't know why Lick Doo was on the end of this track.
We're talking about stoner??? Sleep - Marijuanaut's Theme or Dragonaut Electric Wizard - The Chosen Few, Saturnine, Doom Mantia, or Vinum Sabbathi Brant Bjork (Drummer from Kyuss) - Low Desert Punk or Gonna Make The Scene Om - State of Non-Return, Meditation is The Practice Of Death, or Gethsemane Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats - Death's Door, Waiting For Blood, I'll Cut You Down, or Dead Eyes Of London Fuzz - Say Hello or Hazemaze 1,000 Mods - Vidage or Road To Burn Pentagram - Forever My Queen (1973 version), or Relentless Flower Travellin' Band - Satori Part 1 or Satori Part 3 Lo-Pan - Kramer, Kurtz, or Bird of Prey Bison BC - Earthbound
YEEEEEESSSSS, been looking forward to a reaction to this track. Got to cover it in middle school with friends and improv a solo since I wasn't good enough to play the og haha
This is one of my favorite genres. I agree most of Kyuss's albums do have a production quality that sounds muffled, probably partly intentional and partly not. There are a ton of bands who have carried on the style of music. I'm sure it's been suggested but check out Demon Cleaner, great song... you mentioned Tool, rhey actually covered demon cleaner live one time, apparently the tool guys were fans

As others have said the last part was a bonus track, on the CD there is a ton of silence before that before it kicks in. Would love to see some Corrosion of Conformity at some point, a big stonerish band you're missing! Great video as always.
Love corrosion
Yeah, albatross would be right up their alley
The CD was split into 3 main tracks with 3, 3, and 4 songs on them and iirc LickDoo was a 4 unlisted joke track.
So glad you guys finally got to do this amazing piece from kyuss, so underrated and one of my favourite songs ever so chill and groovy
Kyuss has a lot more groove than a lot of stoner stuff. Just FYI.
Especially the shit coming out now
Dude absolutely.
And Goss's Masters of Reality is worth a reaction, too. 'Third Man on the Moon' is a groovy tune!
You just need to listen to Wretch to hear what they sound like without Goss: Someone forcing Homme to not use a bass head and tune to an E instead of C.
Your touching all over the beauty of Kyuss, I swear many of their songs could chase you away, but if you stay to long ,you can't leave.
The bit at the end is comparable to skits on older rap records.
If you're interested in more Stoner Rock I recommend Colout Haze or Windhand if you fancy a badass female singer.
Windhand is great. I'd recommend "Halcyon" as a good entry point.
Sludge Marathon or even Stoner Marathon is absolutely needed
ohhhh hopefully that means we'd get some Melvins in there!
This is the last song off this album. Such a killer album. It deserves to be listened to from start to finish. Such a great album.
This album redefined my taste in music
The last part is actually a separate track, some streaming sites include it on whitewater tho.
Thank you guys for this reaction!! I had a shitty week and this totally brought me up, Kyuss is so endearing to me.
I was waiting this reaction for years
In 94' I lived in Idyllwild and worked in Hemet and then Palm Desert. This absolutely fits in with how life in Palm Desert was! So glad you did this, the only other time I've heard Kyuss was your Gardenia reaction, as it brought back some old "feelings" I had forgotten about 🤘
Kyuss FTW
Saw a band cover this one in a bar and I went up and thanked them for it.
Far superior to QOTSA and its not even close.
Indeed much prefer kyuss to qotsa
Although saying that songs for the deaf is my favourite qotsa album which has dave grohl drumming for them so...yeah
This is such a great tune. Nice to see reactions to some of these more obscure songs/bands.
So glad that you are doing Kyuss again. If you want to go on a trip check out the song "Space Cadet" from Kyuss. It is pretty mellow but you will get lost in it. Thanks guys
"50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up)" is the name of the song. Eventually gotta get there.
The listening instructions for the album are a great direction for you to get lost in this music. "listen without distraction". You let it wash over you like the raw power and chaos of white water, and as it gets to the end of its journey the energy starts to dissipate leaving you awash in a lake of serenity.
Im sitting here, reacting to this for the first time along with you guys. Good stuff!
I agree with George, it's like a hypnotic pulsing...Space Cadet all day though
Spaceship Landing.
Other stoner bands to check out:
1. Sleep
2. The Sword
3. Orange Goblin
4. Baroness
5. King Wizard and the Lizard Gizzard
Honorable mention- Trouble
Just a few thrash metal bands you haven't checked out:
Havok
Municipal Waste
Holy Grail
At the Gates
Wo Fat, Freedom Hawk, Orange Goblin, and Uncle Acid aren't too shabby in the stoner/doom department either.
ASG
Red Fang
The singer from Kyuss, John Garcia, was in a killer heavy band called Sloburn after this. Like an extra-heavy version of Kyuss. Only 6 songs released on that EP "Amusing the Amazing" but they are all amazing.
"There's sophistication in the fuzz". Glad you guys can listen for those nuances and appreciate the music.
Kyuss crush tool. Besides the reeder connection & tool covering Kyuss/being Kyuss fanboys, the two bands have nothing in common
POST METAL PLEASE. ISIS, SUMAC, old man gloom, neurosis, pelican
If you guys go through another stoner rock/metal month I have tons of recommendations that would be geared towards what you guys would enjoy. I think you would very much enjoy The Sword, anything off of "Warp Riders" is incredible.
They loved freya by sword
It’s on their patreon if you wanna check it out
Your comment was at the top oh my phone so I could only read the top line and my brain went 'I'm going to mention The Sword!!' I was so pleased to see them in your full post and extra pleased that you mentioned their magnum opus (opus if you like your stoner doom riffy with a bit of crunch!!) Check out Acid Mammoth!
Gardenia. Cathamaran.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR ANOTHER KYUSS REACTION SINCE FOREVER, THNX GUYS...GUESS I'LL HAVE TO JOIN PATREON
Yup they did thumb from Kyuss
Their patreon is worth it man so much content from them!
Hell yeah, Kyuss! Keep ‘em coming boys love your work.
Blues For The Red Sun is their best album imho. 50 million year trip is their best song.
Also Tool has covered Kyuss' "Demon Cleaner" which sounds exactly like Tool's song in that version.
YES! Tool's cover of Demon Cleaner led me to Kyuss!
Whitewater is a place in Cali. Its a river that flows through the mountains in the desert
You guys need to react to Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop from this same album! Insane groove and vocals!
100% agreed
I’d recommend Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop from this album, as well as Asteroid.
Johnny P’s Caddy - J Cole and Benny the Butcher!!
I think you'll dig "Green Machine", "Stage III", "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop" or "El Rodeo" from Kyuss!!
El Rodeo yeaaaah. Also Spaceship Landing, though it is 11 minutes and 11 seconds long.
Please eventually react to those Kyuss songs mentioned in the beginning (Supa Scoopa, 50 Million year trip). And just like others mentioned, the final part was a hidden track which definitely isn’t part of the song.
I’m so happy you guys did this song. One of my favorites by Kyuss. You guys should Catamaran by them next.
Hoping you get back to them.
this album was 4 tracks, 3 songs on each track with whitewater and lick doo at the end of the cd
AFTER THE BURIAL. Literally any song
Benny The Butcher - Johnny P’s Caddy (Ft. J. Cole) 🔥🔥🔥
I love Brant Bjork's drums in Kyuss, and particularly in this song. Those cymbals give some smokescreen vibe to the song.
Nobody has ever made a groove metal like this song ever. No song besides this makes me want to equally headband/rage and dance sexy
"Demon Cleaner" is the most famous Kyuss song.
Check out Unida afterwards, it's the next project for many in Kyuss...It has some Fuzz in the Unida's early work, but no Fuzz in their later works, Sounds like pop-stoner rock
Lmao I laughed so hard at the end. I remember that one.
Elder rocks. Seconding the recommendation for "Sanctuary".
Elder would be great.. just skip the latest album
One of the many many things I enjoy about Stonerrock is that it’s a genre that takes it’s time to tell the story
Clutch - The Swollen Goat or Subtle Hustle or La Curandera or literally anything from them.
Just so you guys know, it was really common for underground 90s bands to slip secret tracks onto the actual songs because when you popped these CDs or tapes into advanced players you couldn't tell that there are extra songs that aren't listed on the sleeve
So Lick Doo isn't actually Whitewater, it's an interlude
Johnny Ps Caddy - Benny the Butcher feat. J Cole
Curmudgeon - Canibus
The long road - Canibus
I love that George loves Kyuss. I don’t know too many people who even know who they are, but I’m a huge fan.
Some High On fire would be great guys! I think you would really like them. Songs like "Rumors of war", "The Black Plot" or "Snakes for the divine".
Bleh
I love Kyuss! You guys should check out the band Fu Manchu. They are awesome.
The Fu.
🤘
Sleep - Marijuanaut's Theme or Dragonaut
Electric Wizard - The Chosen Few, Saturnine, Doom Mantia, or Vinum Sabbathi
Brant Bjork (Drummer from Kyuss) - Low Desert Punk or Gonna Make The Scene
Om - State of Non-Return, Meditation is The Practice Of Death, or Gethsemane
Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats - Death's Door, Waiting For Blood, I'll Cut You Down, or Dead Eyes Of London
Fuzz - Say Hello or Hazemaze
1,000 Mods - Vidage or Road To Burn
Pentagram - Forever My Queen (1973 version), or Relentless
Flower Travellin' Band - Satori Part 1 or Satori Part 3
Lo-Pan - Kramer, Kurtz, or Bird of Prey
Bison BC - Earthbound
YEEEEEESSSSS, been looking forward to a reaction to this track. Got to cover it in middle school with friends and improv a solo since I wasn't good enough to play the og haha
In terms of essential stoner rock/metal Dragonaut by Sleep is so good. Iron Swan, Freya, and Cloak of Feathers by The Sword are really good to.
Scott reeder tried out for tool along with justin
Feel like it would be fun just hanging with these guys listening to music.
John Garcia (Lead singer) sounds like a mix of Layne Staley and Johnathan Davis
