I really like this series. This is what I feel like Tolarian Community College "should" be about. But I understand there might not be as much interest in getting better at magic.
glad that these tutor classes weren´t around when i played magic with my friends. no one would have thought about bolting my birds and elves. everyone like: "oh, but 3 damage on a 0/1 is waste" and they full and well knew that i played a tooth and nails deck. they always ended up suprised when i reached 9 mana and smaked them with naughty combos. one of my personal favorites: emrakul and hypnox.
That's a quick fix, prof. I'm sure you're feeling self-conscious based on stuff you've said in the past, but only those who saw it know it and we have short memories :)
you asked me to watch and I have watched it was a good video and very informative on the mana curves and how all the interactions between you playing a manadork and how your opponents reactions affect the game and the use of them
deathrite shaman is a card i've never been able to believe was printed post 2010. it's practically a 1 mana planeswalker. power level on par with cards like brainstorm and vampiric tutor. absolutely insane card
Hey, Prof! As always, great video! I would like to suggest a Tolarian Tutor about Reach Decks. Not decks with creatures that can block as tough they had flying but the old meaning of reach in Magic, before the Keyword was created: the ability of a deck to beat you outside of conventional creature combat. I really like that strategy but we rarely see people talk about it aside Burn decks and it can be so much more interesting when applied to midrange or control.
After watching some cEDH recently I wondered why tf I'm not running more mana dorks in my decks (often I didn't include any). I have since changed it and honestly them getting killed hasn't really been much of an issue but the upside is fucking huge, definitely can recommend it in a variety of decks!
Thanks for so much in-depth info for running mana dorks! As a strictly Commander player, I have avoided building and playing Green so far, so not very knowledgeable on mana dorks. Also replying to help you against your video being bombed by youtube.
When I first learned about Elvish Mystic in high school my friends and I called it Elvish Mistake because obviously a 1 mana 1/1 was just a mistake to put in your deck XD
we've all been there. i remember when i first saw 'necropotence', i thought is was such a dumb card, why would skipping your draw step be a good idea?!
I love randomly logging in and seeing something like "uploaded 10 seconds ago". Just good timing and a nice treat to watch. I already know this stuff but I'll still watch haha
The only mana dork I run in my commander deck is the I forget the name but its the one thats 1 black 1 green from ikoria because it can also tap to put cards in your gy. I use him in my Meren Graveyard deck. On a side note I finally got the last pieces to "finish" pimping out the deck as well. Every single card is either a foil or alt art version I really liked that can be the only cards that aren't are my command tower and constant mists because mists has only been printed once anyway lol. I'm waiting for the comander collection green to get that sol ring and command tower tho because the art just goes soooo well with the theme of the deck.
My momir vig, commander decks it made up of a ton of mana dorks. Then I just swing wide with a board full of pumped mana dorks. It’s my take on green stomp decks as I seem to have trouble building mono green stuff.
while this is a great and insightful episode for eternal format like Modern and such, I think having a small section for rotating/newer format such as Standard/Historic would help a lot, especially with how huge MTG Arena is at current year and the different scale of power level on the mana dorks such as Gilded Goose or Lotus Cobra compared to Bird of Paradise or Llanowar Elf
I play more dorks in Aristocrats decks in EDH like Sek'kuar Deathkeeper, Nethroi, and so on, because they function as acceleration and also as easy death triggers when I need them.
I have a casual elf ramp deck in legacy, where I run 9 llanowar elves (in various forms), 4 Priest of Titania, and 4 Elvish Ardruid. I do some crazy mana stuff, let me tell you! I don't find I miss the Cradle, but it's one of my less effective decks, despite never having lost to my generally quite a bit better artifact aggro deck. AFAIK, it's the fact that the Artifact deck literally ran no removal, and just tried to get them down to 0, relying usually on Cranial Plating. It's a fast deck actually, but not interfering with what my elves are doing results in consistently losing to the elves. Quite hilarious, because the elves struggle worse vs almost every other casual deck I've made. The deck that my Artifacts struggle 2nd most against is my best deck overall, my Burn deck, which pretty much blanks my elves, so yeah, metagames are weird, and always run some removal to deal with dorks! For the record, I put 4 Dismember to address the issue. So far it's not really enough, but it needs more testing.
I came from the secret lair extra life video. I wanted to comment here how humorous and entertaining your annoyance with the secret lair walking dead is
Mana Dork vs Mana Enhancer. In commander if I have a dork and a sol ring in my opener, I'm playing the dork first. Sol ring can tap right away, so the dork makes sense.
Great video, love the tutor series. Only though is deathrite is fine and doesn't really need to be banned anymore. Would fix the Uro problem in modern and likely would have rendered Hoggak near useless a year ago. And if the best case is the jund player gets a turn 2 Lilliana and misses turn one hand disruption for it, I think that's okay.
What about cards like mind stone in historic? It's turn 2 ramp that doesn't die to creature sweepers and can be cashed in late game, so should control be running it to get to their haymakers faster?
