    The Universe is a dark forest full of hunters ready to shoot at the first sight of light or motion near them. Humanity is a young child that made a bonfire and screamed “hear I am!” with not a weapon worth its weight...

    This reminds me of "Death's End" by Liu Cixin, where aliens were casually exterminating planetary systems by either shooting a relativistic "photoid" at the star or a device that looked like sheet of paper but upon unfolding itself it reduced the whole system from 3D to 2D, killing everything. The most insulting part of it though, was the fact that these exterminations were performed by the lowest ranking member of their society and was supposed to be very cheap. So basically a space janitor was erasing civilizations with a filthy mop & bucket. Terrifying stuff.

    “The Quiet Sky” is the best and most horrifying Sci-fi creepypasta and is quite similar to this story where naive humans send out signals to space only to attract the attention of a horrifying cosmic entity.

      It would still take a long time to get here not a yr because that would be would be inconceivable. Light speed is really the speed of information and causality. The question is when was the message sent.

    What do you want to bet that the story was written before the author did more detailed research, hence the "tacked on" feel of the part where the story claims the cover-up... This is why I never ended up writing the myriad stories I've started: the scientific understanding changes rapidly, and my stories are rendered obsolete before they are finished.

    What doesn't make any sense is how the scientists know that signal comes from Boötes Void.
    The signals come from a point on the sky: IOW: you know only two coordinates, latitude and longitude (or on astronomers language, Ra/Dec).
    Generally in astronomy, you don't immediately know the distance!
    For solar system objects, observations within several hours or days reveal that object is moving laterally.
    For nearby stars, the same can be detected in several years (proper motion, parallax).
    For extragalactic objects, the lateral motion is undetectable and distance must be inferred by other means: "standard candles", redshift, etc. NONE of these methods would work for unknown, possibly artificial signal. So, scientists COULD NOT conclude that signal comes from the Boötes Void. It only comes "from the direction of Boötes Void", and there are millions of foreground objects (stars, galaxies, alien spy satellites in our Oort cloud ;) which can emit it, because Boötes Void is good several degrees in size on the sky (much larger than the Moon).
    The author of the story clearly does not realize this detail
    This is why "scientists" in his story somehow immediately know "it's from Boötes Void!!!".
    Sad.

Of course it is right all the amateur astrologists looking into the sky, they would tell us.. right?

    You know, logically, if something was traveling faster than light you wouldn't see it until it was already there, traveling faster than light doesn't mean you will see what is happening or disappearing in almost live time, that light was a stream that has been traveling since the dawn of time, if something started traveling faster than light then maybe the light around it would be eaten on it way to you but from your perspective on earth you would see the bootes void as you know it and the image would not change from your perspective until the wave is upon you, if it travels faster than light you would see the image in the distance as it's always been, that instantly with no transition it becomes whatever awaits.

    Ya know even though it's a creepypasta and hardly the place to mention this, why is it hard for people to understand that what *laws* are to us, may just be our way of understanding things. Black holes break the laws of physics yet we still go on as if the laws aren't broken by the known cosmos all the time. Things that may be impossible for us to understand doesn't equate to being impossible to occur.

    • @TheKain202
      @TheKain202 Год назад +3

      Black holes don't break anything. In fact - they were predicted to exist based on out understanding of the laws of nature, through General Theory of Relativity, nearly a century before we actually managed to make a picture of one.

    • @jackdare
      @jackdare Год назад +1

      Yeah, the "laws" of reality change over time as humanity assaults them in every conceivable way. And now we're teaching our AI children to act like stubborn humans just in time for a huge quantum computing boost to their neural networks.. many laws will likely be demoted to mere suggestions in the near future ;P

      @@williambenson1477 I’ve read competent hard sci fi authors, there are better stories, I guess I just don’t hate fun and i don’t take my entertainment so seriously. I can overlook a stories flaws to find underlying themes enjoyable. Creepy pasta is something I enjoy because of the amateur nature of the author. Not every author can be CiXin, but that adds more enjoyment not less, as I view things like certain mistakes to mean we may be reading an unreliable narrator, adding to the mystery of a story and deepening the narrative themes. Some of the best stories I’ve heard were Creepypasta. The writing and little mistakes don’t bother me. Here, the presentation of a mysterious force that defies the understanding of Earth science and the profound horror of such a realization breaking someone’s mind was quite effective. The sci fi setting is secondary to those themes in this instance. At least imo, and trust me, my taste is quite varied and solidly grounded in many incredible authors of all genres. Lighten up on the critical part of your mind and enjoyment opens itself to you in ways you may find to be profoundly life changing.
