- The Bold Privateer was collected by Baring-Gould from James Hext, a shepherd of Postbridge, Devon. (The Baring Gould song archive is now available on line thanks to Wren Music -- see wrenmusic.co.uk). I heard it from the singing of Martin and Shan Graebe, but added an extra verse from Mason. Sung by Alan Rosevear in Exeter. Roud Number 1000.
BOLD PRIVATEER
1. "Farewell my dearest Molly now you and I must part,
In crossing of the seas mi love I give to you my heart;
Our ship she lays a waiting, so fare thee well my dear
I'm just a going to sail, my love, on a bold privateer."(x2)
2. "She said my dearest Billie, great dangers have been past ,
And many a sweet life on the sea in this cruel war's been lost.
You'd better stay at home here, with her that loves you dear
Than venture your sweet life on a bold privateer."(x2)
3. "You know my dearest Molly your parents do me slight,
Besides you have two brother that threaten to my life.
So far from home I'll wander and soon shall get me clear
I am just going on board, love, of a bold privateer."(x2)
4. "Greive not, my dearest jewel, when I am out of sight
For I must go on board and so boldly I will fight,
We will run up our colours till our purpose we make clear
We'll soon let them know she's the bold privateer."(x2)
5. Soon will the wars be over and if heaven spares our lives,
T'is then we will return again to sweethearts and our wives,
And soon shall I then married be unto my Molly dear
And forever bid adieu unto this bold privateer."(x2)
