I'm only giving example with my personal xpirience wich is still not enof 4me 2manage, I still add frm my salary. Lik I said, 500naira per child is not enough in dis present day Nigeria. His wife has been managing him, he shud manage her. If he can't he shud divorce her. Just like she's done now after countless years of beating & he's saying he wants her back so dat he can continue d beating? Let him provide 4his chiren dat's d reason 4d court case, nothing more.
Emotional abuse is not good, I don't support it weda frm man or woman. Same way physical abuse is unacceptable. But in dis particular case, all we hear is "hijab" & "beating". A man has been beating his wife for 16 years, everyday! yet a judge says he should go for 3 months marriage counselling. Thsi is a life long habit. He is who he is, never going to change. Do you know the guts its takes for a victim of DV to look at herself and say she has had enough?! and leave?!. I am so disappointed in this judgement. To say that you see love between them?! So love is beating someone for 16 good years. Even if you have a dog as a pet and you beat it for that long, you think it wont leave you? Like do you know the physiological damage DV does to a victim? This Judge you need to read books watch shows on DV victims to understand in depth the great damage it does. It is in the very best interest of this woman and her children to leave that toxic man and for once live in a sane environment. This woman should be going through therapy for healing. Its extremely sad the way the Nigerian society puts pressure on women to stay put in horrific situations like this. Very sad

The judge is also subject to the law. Stop blaming her. Put the blame on the law and lawmakers.
The default setting for every marital issue in Nigeria is to "first" seek reconciliation and resolution, not dissolution. When resolution doesn't work, then dissolution comes in.
So until the law changes, stop putting the blame on judges.

It took a lot for the woman to move out of their home, after enduring domestic violence for so long. She was weak and imprisoned by her emotions and her love for family kept her there. Am sure she was hopping that he will change but he didn't. Finally, having the courage to move out, shows that she is a fighter and would do what it takes to gain back what she had lost (her dignity and respect). If her husband is sincere and works hard to make things right, am sure he will show her so much love and respect for the rest of their lives. I see a man who may have taking such habit from what he witnessed as a child. You can sense his sincerity and remorse. At a point he even lost thought and was really embarrassed. No argument and a strong will to be better. I wish them the best. Thank you Judge Funmi Asaolu and The Justice Court.

Let me shock you. Do you know it is legal for a man to beat his wife in some parts of Nigeria, in the name of correction? Like the law (Penal Code) supports it. He probably thought he was doing the right thing.
I also hope they were able to resolve the issue of the wife not dressing like an Alfa's wife. That seems to be part of the reasons for the beating even though the judge did not address it. I believe in freedom of belief, thought and religion but the wife might have needed to compromise a bit for his sake.

I don't support his actions, but I don't support such decision because you can tell that he can't afford N10,000 weekly during this fuel crisis. If you want to argue with me, what if he is a civil servants? The minimum wage in the country is N30,000 per month and some States still pay N18,000. How will this be judged if he is a civil servant that earn minimum wage? I think the judge should have respect the fact that he wanted to give N5,000 or N7,000 weekly. If the wife claimed he gave N3,000 frequently, it means he can't afford N10,000 frequently when he still have to cater for the one in Polytechnic. Instead of putting all responsibility on men, we should also encourage women to be financially independent before going into marriage in this world of equal rights.

Please what happened to walking away? Why can't the man do the dignifying thing by walking away from a volatile situation? And quite frankly if my bro was to hit his wife, she fell on the floor, hit her head and died then my brother would go to prison for life. And that would torment him for the rest of his life and bring huge shame to my family. Which one is worst? People don’t seem to realize that in life we have choices. U claim a woman is a human being who as to think and make decisions on her own! Why couldn't she use it to make a better decision in her marriage ? Both in Christian and Islamic marriages it as been stated woman must submit to her husband authority. People who made it a criminal offence made it so the man would be tolerant however the man's actions could still be justifiable if truly such cases are reviewed by a competent judge. If women can't be tolerant in marriage as expected of a man then they should stay in their fathers house.

They are not commodities or property that needs to be managed or a robot/toy that needs to be operated. Why do they need to stay in their fathers house? Many are very capable of having their own houses. It’s clear the school of thought you come from and we will not agree on this. I’m not saying women should be disrespectful in their marriages - there needs to be compromise, understanding and respect in marriage for it to work. You are assuming that she is the only one at fault - this is 20 years of marriage we are talking about. It takes two to tango they say. A man is not always right and a sensible man will recognize his wife’s strengths and where she ought to take the lead.
And for your information, in the Bible that I read and know - we are told to submit to one another but men like to forget that part when they want to dominate and mistreat their wives. That same bible passage also speaks of husbands loving their wives as Christ loved the church. We can’t even begin to comprehend such love as Christ gave His life to redeem His church to himself. Does a physically abusive man reflect such love? And furthermore it’s very easy to submit to a man who loves you and treats you well.
