    The Grand Prix Attack is a very effective sideline for white against the Sicilian Defense, typically generating a very dangerous attack early in the game against black´s king. In the below chess video excerpt from the chess DVD ¨Killer Grand Prix¨ Grandmaster Gawain Jones explains the Grand Prix Attack and how you can start using it to rack up those easy attacking victories with white against the Sicilian Defense while avoiding the immense theory of the main lines. GM Jones is currently the world´s leading expert on the Grand Prix Attack and has used this system to topple many elite grandmasters. Although the basic attacking pattern involving Qe1-h4, f5, Bh6, and Ng5 is very direct - it is still very difficult to defend against! Let´s check out a fine example in the game Jones vs Zartaj where the Grandmaster demonstrates this attacking scheme in practice.
    Black responds to the Grand Prix Attack with the 2. ...d6 system and an early kingside fianchetto. This is a dangerous choice and we can see that black´s opening play in this game can definitely be improved. However - white´s attack is highly instructional as he rapidly picks apart black´s defenses. It is very important to emphasize the f5 push by white - even if you have to sacrifice this pawn, it is essential to open up lines against black´s king so you can bring all of your pieces into the attack (especially the dark-squared bishop on c1!) Black was unable to defend himself successfully and fell victim to a brilliant attack by white, involving multiple piece sacrifices that culminated in a decisive advantage.

    Just because your rating is less than 2700 doesn't mean that you're not really a Grandmaster, that's a ridiculous thing to say, especially since Gawain Jones was in the London Chess Classic playing against the best in the world! Also, 2700+ players such as Carlsen and Nakamura have played the Grand Prix Attack.
    Another thing to bear in mind is that you are not going to be playing 2700+ players, so even if it turns out not to be 100% sound it would stil be perfectly playable at lower levels.

    And even after that f5?? is just a terrible move for any player over 2000. After h6 Bxh6 Bxh6 Qxh6 Qg7 black is definitely worse but has some chances to save the game.

  • @13shepi
    @13shepi 11 лет назад +1

    Black did make an obvious mistake in the game, Nxf3+ Rxf3 creates threats of Rh3 and other ideas, and allows to much activity. Instead the slightly akward f6 is necessary, when Be3 (forced) Nxb3 axb3 b6 Rad1 Qc7 Bh6 Ng6 Qh5 fxe4 Nxe4 Ba6 c4 Bb7 Nd6 Bxh6 Qxh6 Rad8 Nxb7 Qxb7 or similar lines do not give white complete compensation for the pawn.

    agreed - he is a very strong GM as well!

  • @ChesscomGames
    @ChesscomGames  11 лет назад

    Well I think he is more trying to focus on showing lines that he has used with great success against many of black´s main lines, instead of just explaining all the main lines and sidelines, and accompanying variations

    The reason this is a great opening is that you probably not will face super GMs. It is easy to play and white has a concrete attacking plan. Many of Englands best GMs has used the opening with great success.

    Why would black play d6 if he wants to play d5? Isn't that a wasted tempo?

    Hey Will, I love your videos and your way of explanation. What opening would you recommend to play and achieve a solid game without knowing the majority of lines and variations? Also, what would you recommend to play against a kings indian type structure?

    Great, but at 6min20 seconds, you let qhite play two moves in a row without allowing black to respond, so we can't follow what you are saying from that point in that line.

    A GM these days is a record of 2500 plus 3 norms I guess.
    Though do you think a player of a standard of that can of should of ever live in a room with say Fischer, Kasparov or Carlsen?
    What I am saying is the prescribed grades and their applicability are shot.
    I would like a GM to mean the same as a Yokosuna in Sumo. You generally get 1 - 4 during their spans.
    If you cant loose a title you need to be fucking good. There should be demotion in chess also. stop people fucking about.

    What kind of player you are? there are a few people in the world that can achieve the norms to be a GM, this DVD's in my opinion are just for learn chess and have fun, not to convert you in a GM in 24 hours, but you can take it like a one step more, of course assuming you have the "Talent".

  • @NostalgiaOC
    @NostalgiaOC 11 лет назад

    There are more than a 1000 GMs. I agree that the title does not hold the same weight today. But that's not a big deal, everybody who knows anything about FIDE knows that being a GM doesn't make you a title contender. By the strictness of your criteria, World Champion might be what you care about.

    The bishop on c4 is important because it pins the f pawn, which is necessary to prevent f6, keeping the knight off g4. Is it worth playing a3 as White to preserve that light-squared bishop in case Black tries Na5?

    on fact in gran prix is when mine enemy sees that f4 in his sicilian he knows it will be hard for him , some suggest that fiencetoing his bishop on g7 (dragon variation) is a big weeknes well im investigation this opening who i more like . olso i like the sicilian . i think thous two openings are inportant for chess in 21 centiry. good luck with ur chess.

    Excellent video. I like the way he explains the moves in an easy to understand manner, and explains the logic behind the moves as well. Your videos have helped come from a complete amateur to almost a class B player. :D Thanks so much for all you do, and all your great videos.

    The Bc4 idea is rarely seen at top levels anymore. The problem is the move order. If black plays 3...d6 then he will eventually have to eventually play ...d5 later losing an important tempo. But if he plays g6 and d6 straight away he is essentially a tempo up in the line shown and black always ends up better. I've had some smashing games as white in this line but usually in speed chess. In longer games with titled players the Bc4 line is definitely a lemon.

    It cannot be a 'great opening' if you are going to get beat up by some one good
    This guy is a GM and says this is a good opening
    What he should say ( if he knows ) is why this opening fails.
    Chess is chess. Maybe Magnus finds this looks 5 moves further and reclaims it as a 'good opening'
    I doubt that though

    If this is a great variation and worth buying(lol) a DVD for, why does no top GM play it and it is published by a sub 2700 (i.e. not really a GM these days) player?

  • @Aetherius88

    I often find that my opponent will play either Na5 or push the A and B file pawns to harass my C4 bishop, causing me to spend several moves re-purposing him. Also, if black ends up playing Nd4 supported by his C-pawn, then that can become frustrating. Sometimes I find I am thwarted before I can ever get my queen to H4. Recently I have been in situations where there is a strong double-king-side-attack going on in which my opponent and I are both unleashing everything at the same time. It gets messy, but it is fun. However, I don't usually feel like I have any substantial advantage on players 1800+ ...So...Any advice?

    • @RobBCactive
      @RobBCactive 6 лет назад

      Study, where you're losing time! When I play black side of this, the slightest slip and my setup collapses. Don't get time for Q side excursions! Sometimes it looks fine, then N's crash in on d5 or e6, showing I missed something. White's play is crude but effective, much easier than black as I don't face this often enough to nail the theory.

    You see zero Gimp master from the UK, thank God
    Best the UK can and should do is to sponsor (from Lottery money) Luke to play full time for 3 years
    and to do the same for the 1 or 2 top players on a ongoing basis
    As Liuke works in the like of GS this will probably be a bonus for the Tax payer also
