I’ve been using the salt/vinegar/Dawn combo for years and here are a few things I’ve discovered: 1) Apply solution only when forecast for the coming days will be sunny with no chance of rain, 2) As others have said, spray away from concrete, and 3) Don’t leave the solution in a pump sprayer! It will ruin the metal parts. Rinse it out after each use and store unused solution in the vinegar bottle or elsewhere. I learned this one the hard way ☹️
Thanks for sharing I will do it😉❗
What was the make up of the solution you use?
@@harry9392 - Here:
Water = 1 Gallon
Salt = 1 Cup
Vinegar = 1 Cup
Dish Soap = 2 Tablespoons
Why away from concrete? I was actually planning to use it on my walkways 🤔
transformation sessions with Brian Harvey Salt slowly breaks up concrete. Just like when salt is spread on streets in the winter. It keeps the streets from being slippery during snow and ice storms but causes the concrete to weaken and causes potholes in the spring. Try just vinegar on the weeds. I’ve had some luck with that.
I'm surprised how many videos show how to make the weed killer then stop. Thanks for showing how stuff works in real life.
thanksfernuthin n
great point!
How to mix weed killer
I didn't want to use harsh chemicals to kill weeds, so I appreciate you sharing your experiment with us, so I can make a better informed decision as how to kill weeds. Ignore the negative, sometimes people just don't have anything good to say...We have put so much work into making our back yard a play area and garden, and I want to keep it looking nice. So your video has helped. Thank you
Hey thank u for trying to help people. You seem so nice. God bless u and your family. I'll try the natural weed killer thank u.
Did you try it? I will get supplies tomorrow hope it'll make my job of weeding my community garden easier.
Someone told me a good method to keep weeds from growing in the cracks on my patio. You mix some Rock Salt and some warm water in a sprayer. Do this about once a month.
Works great!
Bargain Barge what about table salt does that work?
@@gamingsquad3684 they never answered but I. Am going to try it as it can't hurt 😂
Savage League It will but it leeches out faster
Epson salt can be used in pre planting in gardens. It is suppose to create nitrogen and will not hurt plants. I tried it this year so far it works. I use vinegar, table salt and dawn for weeds. It does work. But doesn't last as long as round up. But my health is more important.
I’ve tried this method with success, however I used an industrial vinegar with 30% acid. It works extremely well. Interesting results with and without salt.
I never heard him say the strength of the vinegar he was using.Should make a difference.
Actually salt doesn't dissolve when mixed with vinegar so it's more topical than anything. I'd suggest dissolving the salt in some water before adding it to the solution. Also, grass roots run a bit deeper so that might explain why the grass kept growing. I have some week killing to do out back so I'll first try using vinegar and dawn and see what happens.
Good info. I have a spot under a tree that is covered with rocks, but has a tall, very hardy weed growing in many spots around this area. It is so sturdy, I can't pull them out of the ground. Want to avoid chemicals, so am going to try clipping these off at the ground and spraying each stump with the vinegar. Hope it works to kill them so they don't come back.
This was very helpful thank you with all i read about how toxic that roundup is i was looking for an alternative, i'll have to try this,
Have used this recipe for years. Good success with it but must be reapplied. No impact on weeds after about two months and no lasting impact on the ground. Nice video.Thanks.
Does it has side effects on lawn?
@@ahmadhananzai2044 - It can be used on a lawn to hit a specific weed, without fear of killing the grass around it, if it's used very carefully!! If it accidentally gets on the grass, it will kill it. The vinegar will kill any current growth, quickly, and the salt will help prevent any new growth in a short time afterwards.
I used it on my lawn but it killed lawn too. The color of my lawn changed from green to yellow.
@@ahmadhananzai2044 - OMG - NO!!! ONLY use it on weeds or any plants you want to kill. Too late for your lawn though.
Ok
My lawn is full of weeds. I used it to kill weeds in lawn but the result was above.
I'm going to try this today. I was told to use hot water for the best results
I use regular tap water right out of the faucet.
Grocery store distilled white vinegar is only 5% vinegar. You need to use 30% vineagar.
Thank you for the demonstration! I'm going to use this recipe next instead of roundup
Amen.
Roundup not only causes cancer but has been linked to the massive decline in bees and butterflies!
We Desperately Need Them for pollination!
I live in Florida, when the palm tree colors start to get dull you can pour epson salt around the base of the tree, water it and the tree greens up real nice, so eposn salt does not kill things, it feeds them.
A couple of tablespoons in a gallon works wonders
Hi Jason, how about making a followup video to demonstrate different effect of salt/no salt after 3 months, 6 months, 12 months?? I've learned the salt PREVENTS weeds (and any other plants) from growing back. Thanks, John
That’s a good idea , but this guy is so slow at making a video it would take him 5 years to explain ! Jason , have a Red Bull please !
@@markmed9091 looking forward to your videos on the subject Mark 👍
I am interested in natural weed killer for our flower garden. Love the show
Dont use this method. It will kill EVERYTHING. And the salt will burn the soil making it difficult to grow in the future.
Use the vinegar dish liquid and water only - spray on a sunny day with no rain in the forecast. You may need to reapply. Don't plant until after you wash it off or it rains.
I tried the salt vinegar. N some gain (dishes) and in the morning, weeds were dried up. Actually, I tried it in the morning, my neighbor up stairs ask she saw it WORKED in a few hours, today I'm trying it on the grass. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing TOP VIDEO, round up is linked with health issues as well.
I will try this on my next door neighbors. Thanks
Marisela Palacios 😂
It just makes them taste better.
Glad i dont live next to u MRS
I agree with a few of the posters using salt kills everything not just weeds. I worked for permagreen in Texas for a few years and we had problems where people had pump saltwater down into the ground to get oil out and the saltwater was making its way up to the surface and killing lawns
I use seawater, spray directly with no other mix. When weeds turn white deade as roots dry up,you can rinse with freshwater, intensify to drench salt residues to the drain.
Yeap, make a trip to the ocean, nice idea, specially if you live in the Denver.
Thank you! Great idea! Fortunately I live at the coast. I was going to have to buy table salt because I only have pink salt and don't want to waste it on weeds. LOL! I'll add vinegar and soap to it as well.
Thanks for sharing. Suggestion from a communication standpoint: Would have been helpful to be told which side had the vinegar only, and which side had the mixture. Was it right/left of the stick? Top/bottom? That never seems to be pointed out.
Mmmm, interesting: I think too much salt & vinigar on my (little) brother's chips may have stunted his growth too 🤔
LOL
Chaz Walker - but better than ketchup giving him diabetes from high fructose corn syrup. Lol anyway taste better.
10 cheers for salt’n vinegar!!!!
Im dead weak
Great video! Thanks for sharing the results as well after 3 and 6 days too!
Salt affects a plant's ability to absorb water through their roots. You shouldn't use salt unless you don't want any plants to grow in that area in the future, because it will stay in the soil.
Vinegar kills plants because it contains acetic acid which strips away the outer layer of a plant which then makes it dry up quickly. You can buy horticultural vinegar that is 20% rather than the household kind that is 5%. But it is strong and will burn your skin so be careful. And if you use it in large quantities it can also affect the PH of the soil although it doesn't stick around as long as salt.
These are both plant-killers, not weed-killers...unlike commercial sprays that are formulated for specific weeds, these will kill any plant so keep that in mind.
Pre-emergents like corn gluten are good to know about too, not sure if you cover that in other videos. They prevent seeds from sprouting but don't affect existing plants.
Emma Love Arbogast- thanks, good info
that's the idea, it's a horseshoe pit
Where do you get the horticultural vinegar?
It's regular distilled white vinegar I believe.
Emma Love Arbogast hi, can you please tell if vinegar would work to get rid of my old st Augustine lawn so i could install new zoysia grass. I am planning to install the new grass in a few days and some areas have left the old grass that i would like to get rid of. Thanks
I believe one reason why there was not much difference in the result is because you didn't purge the line of the remaining vinegar/soap mix before spraying the salt side. I think that most likely there wasnt that much salt applied because of this. Thanks for the tip, I am gonna give this a try.
Exactly!
I am just trying this today on my dog run. I have always used "roundup" but have never used it around my animals. Safety first! I hope it works.
Keep us posted on how it works out. @Ralph Duddles, do you keep your dog chained up?
Salt & vinegar with a couple of squirts of washing up liquid works I've been doing if for years. Just use the cheapest of vinegar and salt
It's the best.
You can get 30% vinaiger on Amazon. ($20 a gallon) mix with half regular vinegar. Add one cup of mortars salt and a good dose of dish soap. Stir don’t shake. Everything will die.
Be careful, 30% acetic acid is no joke compared to household vinegar, take precautions
The epsom salts actually promote better growth of the plant. You can use low solution for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, pumpkin, etc. What they do, is they strengthen a steam of a plant and catalyses the chlorophyll in leaves.
@@Calla0001 For how many days??? You could as well use just water.
If you want a more powerfull concoction, substitute vinegar with acid water of car battery. But be careful when spray it, wear PPE, use bigger nozzle. And only for area you dont want anything to grow.
Can i use any dishwashe and cook salt?
Thanks for that will use as an alternative now I think,..
Great video
Iam going to try it in my back garden
In my opinion, you didn't let the salt dissolve enough, it takes more than a few shakes of your dispenser for that.
yes, it takes quite a bit of mixing to get all the salt to dissolve, and you need to get as much salt dissolved as the vinegar will take.
I've read that boiling the salt and vinegar will be sure the salt is dissolved.
Kenneth White Also the hose was still full of the mixture without the salt.
I am going to try thank you for your information
Of t R2-D2
@wanda taylor
Wtf!
Vinegar kills the weeds temporarily, adding the salt kills the weeds down to the roots, and the dawn helps to make it stick to the items your spraying. I've done it with and without the vinegar.
I am getting a load of stone for 2 parking spaces. Over the years grass and weeds have grown and stones disappeared. I want to kill all that before my stone comes. Could I spread rock salt left over from winter, and just let it do it thing? Or should I not use salt being I'm parking cars there. Help.
Great video but 1 issue. After you sprayed one side and then mixed in the salt, you sprayed the other side but the original mixture without salt was still in the hose and was sprayed on. Next time when you add the salt, let it dissolve and then take the end off the sprayer and flush the line using the salted mixture. Just a thought. I really liked your video though. Thank you and may the Lord be with you.
Keep up the work
I read best results when the concentration of acetic acid (vinegar) is 20 to 30 per cent volume in volume (v/v). 20 - 30 per cent v/v acetic acid is very concentrated and use of personal protective equipment is needed.
You can use water softener salt too.
My yard smells like summer time picking green bean and snap peas and my grandma is canning. Homemade ice cream we are all taking turns cranking. Lol, the good ole days.
Nice Job, I have heard about all sorts of salt uses. I still am going to try to slow down 3 areas of weeds.
Industrial vinegar (cleaning vinegar) & salt w/dishwashing liguid ! Thank you buddy !!
The salt all goes to the bottom of sprayer, it has to dissolve to be effective in the mixture, shaking it doesn't dissolve the salt
What dissolves the salt?
I have good luck with Epson salt vinegar and Dawn, but I’m going to try some experiments like you did thank you very much.
Vinegar and salt kills what is on the surface only. More salt kills more different kinds of weeds. Salt can build up and could "poison" the soil. Used infrequently, should not be too much of a problem. The soap helps it stick to the plants. If you get a good hot day, it won't matter if you use salt. This is most effective on broad leaf weeds.
Salt vinegar and dish soap kills like crazy on raspberry bushes
Only ONE kind of "Salt" = NaCl = Sodium Chloride.
Epsom salts = MgSO4 = Magnesium Sulphate, VERY good for plants.
Brian Kane hello sir, my question is very simple will the kill my grass as well and the crab grass?
There's only one sodium chlorate and it works wonders - but you need to either travel back in time to the days when weedkiller actually worked or make friends with a chemist who can make you up a couple of pounds.
I have a 5 gallon bucket of sodium chlorate use for salting sidewalks and driveways that works well to
The reason you want to use Epsom salt, is not to kill the plant. It's to get the plant to take in the vinegar. Where others have said salt will kill the soil, epsom salt will not. Vinegar will dilute over time and so this process does not permanently kill the soil. Also the epsom salt mixture will not kill trees, but will kill suckers that come up from the roots, leaving the root alone. So there are reasons for everything.
@@danilko1 I used Epsom salt in my mix along our fence and it works.
Looks like everyones gardens this summer are going to smell of salt and vinegar like a chip shop
hi Jason thanks for another great video I have a slightly unrelated question for you. just moved to this property it looks like somebody reseated parts of the law with tall fescue the rest of the lawn looks like a mix of fine Fescue and bluegrass what can I do to get rid of the tall fescue
I think making sure the salt is dissolved all the way.
It's no more than about half a pound of salt per gallon. (58g/L) It cannot dissolve much more than that. It creates Sodium Acetate and a bit of weak Hydrochloric acid.
Is that regular 5% white vinegar or 30% white vinegar?
Thank you for making the video. You should have emptied the tube before you sprayed with salt. I think you sprayed both sides with no salt. As there is liquid in the tube attached to the nozzle and that liquid would be without salt.
Be careful how much and how often you put down salt around trees as it will slowly leach down to the tree roots and kill the trees. Out here in New Mexico with very little rain fall to wash it down, salting the soil lasts for years.
Great video, how well does it work killing weeds if you have turf type tall fescue? Thanks
Use rock salt 1 box to 2 gal water let set 2 days stir occasionally add dish soap when ready to spray weeds are gone
What streinght vinegar do you us?
Thanks for the info.
we found it takes direct sunlight to kill more weeds with the vinegar salt solution, Epsom salts worked for us
Think of the Roman's. Sewing the fields with salt to make them baron for several seasons. They didnt have Epsom salt(magnesium sulfate) back then.
Some of those areas the Roman's sowed with salt (around Carthage) still have little to nothing growing on it - so be careful using salt.
I wonder how much money they make in tourism at those Carthage sites?....
Answer .... a lot more than it costs them to keep killing the vegetation every three days.
It works on ant hills also. Kills the ants really well.
Straight dish soap and water works too...also works extremely well on wasps and hornets...
Emma is right..salt stays where you put it for a long time...you could have just spread a moderate layer of salt in the boxed area and it would have done a good job of killing everything in there
Good idea 👍
FWIW, I've seen recipes for vinegar/dishwater soap and vinegar/dishwater soap/salt and the one for salt is for where grass is growing out of driveways or sidewalks where you don't want it to ever grow because salt makes soil not grow any plants. The one without salt is for lawn weeds where you want the grass to survive.
I've found the Epson salt mix to be very effective. However it's hard to get the Epson salt to dissolve therefore clogging my sprayer. Last year I used agricultural Epsom salts and slightly heated the vinegar but ended up straining the solution. There was still sediment in the bottom of the sprayer. It worked great but after sitting for a few weeks in the sprayer it started to crystallize. Not good! I'm determined to get this recipe right because it works so well. As a side note the ag salt was much coarser. This year I bought regular unscented Epsom salt which is finer but still doesn't completely dissolve. I'm giving the table salt recipe a try being its finer. My unused Epsom salt can be used in the garden.
Boil salt water, then let it cool 🙌
I learned its a combo of 30% vinegar found in the ,[ believe or not the ] cleaning sections of hardware stores and Kosher salt [ hot water dissolved a bit] 50 - 50.
Can I mix what you post in put in a spray bottle
20% agricultural vinegar, dish soap, and orange oil. After it dries, burn it off to prevent surviving seeds from germinating
Why orange oil?
It takes 24 hour soak for the salt to disolve also use road salt or watersofterner salt
Water softener is potassium chloride. So in effect any salts but sodium.
@@danilko1 Regular water softener salt is indeed NaCl, (sodium chloride or regular salt) but people who want the water to go easier on their health and metal plumbing can get KCl (potassium Chloride). It's less corrosive and is actually good for the heart. For weeds...I would stay with NaCl (sodium chloride).
I am confused. 1st part of video you sprayed both weed killers, one one each side, on the upper part of the box only. Did you end up spraying the entire box?
I want to spray it around shrubs - will it kill the bushes/ shrubs too?
Yes if you use enough that it leaches down to the root systems. Remember salt is pretty permanent until it washes down below the root level.
tundramanq I have ornamental grass growing at corners of my stone beds surrounding my house. I would like to use the salt mixture to kill the plants and the roots but do t want to kill the tall grass. How close can I spray it to the grass and not damage it?
play horse shoes more often that will take care of the weeds
That's not a bad idea
roy hoco thank God you said that! My pits do not grow weeds. Play 3-4 times a week when the snow melts.... sometimes 7- days a week.
ROFL.... Good one :-)
roy hoco .. case and point this not about playing horseshoes...
lol
I guess I will try it, but does anyone know if it works on Tumbleweed?
Thanks
Very useful video
Well not a bad experiment the one of the differences is instead of using white vinegar I will use pickling vinegar I've noticed it works a little bit faster it's also a little more effective you mixed up with a little bit of orange oil
Where do you get the Orange Oil?
It's pretty important to make sure the salt has dissolved before spraying for effectiveness & to also prevent blockage in the sprayer. It also helps to spray the mixture closer to the roots/base of the weed. People should also keep in mind that it can take twice as long, sometimes longer to see results as the absorption, metabolism & chemical reaction is vastly different. I have been using a salt & vinegar method for approx 10 years & I much prefer it over toxic carcinogenic glyphosate, especially as I have animals & am environmentally responsible. FYI salt is not a permanent weed or plant killer unless you use a copious amount. Funny thing about the first video when Epsom salt was used, is that it's actually a fantastic fertilizer lol
Dee Smith I
mark your experimental areas
Dee, thanks for the additional info. Can you please share the ratios of salt & vinegar you use? Also, please let us know if you use any dish soap or an additional ingredients. Thanks!!
Also, please let us know what type of salt you use e.g. table, kosher? Also, I will be spraying a large playground area, ~25' x 35' that has grass outside of the rectangular area. I hope should I be concerned about leaching into the grass or should the grass be okay as any rain water that leaches it into the grass will also dilute the level of salt so it doesn't harm the grass. Thanks in advance for any additional info you can share with your 10 years of experience!
You will find the weeds easily pull up now.
Grass may take a little longer or needed a bit more soaking the first time.
They say do not use on lawn.
Try combining salt and sodium bicarbonate baking soda.... 2 table spoons of soap... Amd cleaning vinegar.. Its stronger
The bicarb will react with the vinegar in a way the sodium chloride won't.
Its why you gotta mix it with water and then add the vinegar little by little 1 gallon usually does the trick.. At least that how i figired it out bc it does bubble up amd make a reaction. Ita like adding baking soda and lime to clean jewerly. It reacts. Just add it little by little its been working
I sprayed this on my mulch area except I didn't have the dish soap he used so I used a different brand and I also didnt have distilled vinegar so I used apple sider vinegar which I hope works the same way
Might be a better view point to do one side the mix with salt, walk to the other end and do it with washing out your sprayer to get a good idea of the end result
Hey Good job
I see orange oil was mentioned earlier. I've also seen this referenced before as a key ingredient.
I use boiling water, vinegar and salt on a hot day I find that works well j pelettier
Add table salt to the mixture
I remember one year about 20 years ago I tried Roundup and nothing grew in that spot for about 5 years that was just to harsh for me.
The salt is supposed to prevent regrowth.
When you did the side with the salt why didn’t you use another tank cause you did not spray enough through the hose to get the salt on the weeds
Ya, the line was not purged.. great call
Our here we have nutsedge, or nut grass, a very bad weed that is among the 10 worst in the world. I tried a little different mix to see if it would kill this off. I mixed vinegar, one gallon, with one half cup of pinesol, epsom salit, one half cup, and dish soap. So far, it killed the nutsedge off, but I did use a watering can to really soak the weed and the soil with enough to wet the ground as well as the weed. If this works, it will be the most potent weed killer than anything else I tried so far. Roundup will only kill the weed at the surface, and the weed will come back.
Hi there,
Thank you for your experiment. Will the mixture of vinegar, salt and dishwashing liquid kill weeds but will allow other plants to grow after a while. It is known that spraying round up will not allow anything to grow for a long period of time.
This is a concern for me if it will not allow other plants to grow after spraying this mixture.
i would just dump a bag of rock salt in the horseshoe pits and you wont have to worry about grass fpr years, i know a 50 lb salt block sitting out till the cows eat it all makes a permeinet bare spot on the barn yard!!
And using water softener pellets also works well as deer attractant. Down side it they leave huge holes. Works great at hunting spots
Epsom salt is high in magnesium, which is why it greens plants up. Salt sprayed in a mixture as shown here will be greatly diluted by the next substantial rainfall. If you think about it, not a large amount of salt would be going into the soil from a brief spraying. I’ve had good results with 30% industrial vinegar, it just blasts the plants overnight, it’s very strong. Also very expensive. Regular vinegar works to some degree on leafy plants and young grass. Established crabgrass or thick-stalked Timothy grass, regular vinegar would require repeated spraying. Finally, if you spray a lot of concentrated salt around, don’t be surprised if deer show up to lick it. They’ll find it, all right, and then you’ll have more deer in your yard than you may want and will be searching You Tube for deer repellant. Good luck to all gardeners- it’s an ongoing challenge I’ve dealt with for many years. ✌️🍎
I need this for my walkways, in between the concrete. So salt be damned, this will work great for me.
Do the weeds come back?
Try the apple cider vinegar
Can you make a video of that weed killer killing raspberry bushes?
So how much water
