- Опубликовано: 7 июл 2024
- This video showcases the fluid & filter service of a GM 10L80, 10-speed transmission. Complete start to finish guide with parts, tools, and specs needed to get the job done. The process is the same for Sierra, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalade vehicles with the 10-speed transmission, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024. Transmission type can be verified by scanning the QR code found on the driver's door post. The MQB code designates the 10L80 transmission.
GM recommends a 45,000 mi interval for the fluid and filter on the 10L80 transmission. The fluid specification is Dexron ULV ATF, requiring 8.1 quarts when dropping the pan for filter replacement. total system capacity is 12.08 quarts. The filter replacement service will replenish 67% of the fluid.

Dealer quoted $434.99 plus tax for this service on 2022 Chevy Silverado. I'm thinking, surely I can take care of this myself and save some bucks. Thank you for setting me straight !!
😂 lol, no joke. Bargain!
Was going to do this on my 21 Tahoe this changed my worldview about the job. Having the dealer do the fluid exchange is sounding a lot better. Thank you for the very informative video!
Dear God, something so simple turns into a project. Fabulous engineering GM.
Oh they don't care about technicians.
@@bluesky-ud9wgvictim mentality does no one any good.
Wow, No kidding….
Terrible
This was a great tutorial man. More labor intensive then I thought at first.
Enjoyed watching your clips for the Sierra. I had a 21’ with the 3.0 and traded it in for the 24’ and have a 23’ Yukon with the 3.0. I definitely subscribed after watching 4 of your videos
Been looking for a video like this to do my 2018 Tahoe with the 10speed. This is a God send 🙏🏽
man ive been waiting for this video from you ty so much!!!
I’m about to do mine, thanks for the info.
For once having the BabyMax makes routine maintenance easier. Dealing with that exhaust looks like a major pain. Also, the aluminum filter bolts are available online as a valve body bolt kit from several different websites.
Thanks so much for this video, I’ve been waiting for a DIY for months and just found this. I’m at 85k with my AT4 and I tow my toy hauler trailer frequently. I’ll be tackling this next weekend.
Let me know how it went I’m at 54000 with mine
Holy Smokes!!! I waited for this video for so long and just did it last weekend!!!! Throwing a similar video together as I probably did it the harder way - Thanks so much for posting - Going to tackle the cooling system next - 19 Sierra 6.2 / 10 Speed with 56k! Thank you for posting this and having such great content.
Thank you for the genuine appreciation! This is a hard one no matter what way you do it! I burned myself, used way too many tools, and said a lot of things I was glad my 10-yr old wasn't around to hear. My favorite thing is hopefully making it look easy. I wouldn't want to deny anyone the privilege of doubting they could take it on 😄. That's awesome you're making a video, I hope it goes well!
Thank you so much for the words of encouragement as it will be my first video! I too also used a whole bunch of wobble extensions to get the job done....OMG I have burn marks all over my hands and arms because of lack of remembering the exhaust is HOT when checking the fill - You should have seen me freaking out as I did not put in 8 qts at first, started the truck, got to 167 and then pulled the plug only to see I was short - mad rush to fill it to avoid any damage - Love your trick to fill with a seal, then let it get warm - Very Clever@@MasterJacks
😂, that's too funny and totally relatable!
Any idea why I would only have 5qts drain from the transmission after pulling pan & filter versus the called out 8qts? Thank you
I have the 8L90, is the drain plug in the same spot? I can't seem to find it
🛑Hello, I have a GMC saw 2020 and it presents a problem that according to the code is the purge bump, you know how to solve it, I already changed 2 pieces and it's not the problem yet😢
Great video. Would you recommend flush/fluid exchange that the dealer can do along with the new oil and filter, or pan drop, oil, and filter only?
Thanks! I'm in favor of the complete fluid exchange, however the pan drop and filter service on this transmission exchanges 8 of the 12 quarts (67%). That's pretty good! If you are doing this every 50k as recommended, I don't imagine ever having transmission problems.
I wanted to do this myself after GMC wanted $1100 WTH!!
What resource are you using for torque specs and bolt tightening sequencing? I am looking for a good resource specific to this generation of Sierra 1500.
I pay for ProDemand. It's a commercial shop repair software. I would look at Identifix. It's a great repair software that has tiered pricing.
Dude I just did this all u have to do is pry the exhaust down and the trans pan will come out all that is not necessary
I just tried that man. No fucking way you did
I just paid $775 for my 2019 Seirra AT4 to get a transmission fluid and filter change and now I understand why. Still seems steep but I don’t have the time to do this job. I’ll gladly pay 😂
I wish I would’ve just paid, I’m halfway thru job on day 2, what a pain in the ass
@@zezifaz3537 I feel you man!!
Pretty steep $. I'm in Canada and the only trusted trans shop here was $600. And all the materials are way pricier up here.
I was quoted $1000 from local GM dealership. 4hr job plus parts
There were a few times during this job I would have considered that justifiable, lol. Nothing too hard, just very involved for a routine maintenance item.
Hello! this has been very helpful. is this the same for the 3.0 Diesel 10 speed? much easier accesible. just want to make sure its the same system before i buy the parts.
@@Ipskerbibl yes, it's the same.
@@MasterJacks awesome! Thank you for the reply
Great video but dang GM couldn’t route that exhaust better? Could you do this without removing that if you don’t mind the mess?
On the older models, there was a little more space and you could sometimes work the pan out. On this one, there isn't enough clearance for the pan to drop far enough to clear the filter and valve body. Not very maintenance friendly
Now i see whyn the dealer charges $600 for this service
How often should you do this? I came to the dealer, and they quoted me $800. They also said I didn't need it until I hit the 100,000, I am on 50,000 right now. I don't know what to believe. Another dealer told me it is possible to change fluid without dropping the pan. They charge me $380. They also said I should drop the pan when I hit 100,000. But how can they change the fluid if there is not a drain bolt 🤔
They flush the oil through a set of kidney filters. I was quoted $380 for the flush also and $1000 for the filter change
Hello there, Great video my friend. but man, the gas version has that Exhaust pipe in a way and what a pain in the butt to change the transmission fluid while removing all kinds of parts out of the way. Anyway, I have a 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 3.0L Duramax and the transmission at these pick up truck is not obstructed by anything apparently l, so it is easier to remove the pan. Now, this is my story. I just recently ordered through Amazon my Al Delco Transmission Fluid and since the Amazon suggested that the Dextron VI transmission fluid fits my car then I went ahead and purchased 12 qts since I am changing the pan with a deep PPE pan. Now I went ahead and changed the transmission fluid and place the Dextron VI already, as well as went through all the process and temperatures too.. Drive it for about 4/5 miles and then parked it. The second day, I went ahead and watch few videos including yours and I realized that the AlDelco Dextron VI is NOT the correct fluid for this 10L80 transmission. Instead I need the Dextron ULV 10-4107 I think it is the bottle saying. As soon as I saw that then I drain the transmission again immediately and replaced it with the correct Dextron ULV type. Went through the whole process again and drove the truck again for about 10 miles. Everything seems fine for now, but there is most likely more fluid left inside the Torques Convertor as I would imagine since I could not drain everything. So at this point it is mixed with the Dextron VI. Since I can’t flush the transmission for now, then I am planing to removed it again later on and add again 9 quarts of new Dextron ULV so that the fluid left inside the Torque Converter will be replace with new fluid and have less Dextron VI left overall inside… Damn Amazon have this message stating that this Dextron VI fit my vehicle so I got to table mislead and went though all this headache. I am hoping that everything will be fine in the end while repeating this process again so that the incorrect fluid will be removed as much as possible.. Geez! What a damn nightmare and believe the Amazon posted message.
you will be fine!
Dealer quoted me $400.00. I thought that seamed high but man that is a lot of work just to get the pan off.
That price also includes a trans flush from what i was told. You could come out cheaper by not doing it (the flush). Personally I'm a double drain and fill kind of guy.
@@carsonneuse7980 so I had another shop just drop the pan and change the filter and fluid. Charged me 180. I was ok with it.
@@jeremygregory7178 That seems to cheap...I would be sceptical, thats about the cost of just the fluid.
@@afbigfish1 the dexron ulv fluid on rock auto was 5.00 per quart. They used 8 quarts for pan removal and filter change. The dealer charges atleast 12.00 per quart. The shop also charges 75.00 per hr where the dealer charges 127.00 per hour.
@@jeremygregory7178 Sorry, I didnt shop around for the fluid I checked the amazon link and it was over 18 per quart. so it seemed sketchy... Thanks for the heads up I didnt expect such a wide margin in cost for the ULV. Do you know if they dropped the exhaust like in the video?
Just curious. I was told the trans fluid spec was like 157F. Just to avoid that, wouldn't it be easier to measure how much fluid came out, and just adding the amount?
You could do that as a starting point, but It's better if you get it up to temp and check it with it running to be sure it's accurate. To get it up to temp, you can do converter stalls (foot on brake, shift into drive, rev engine to 1300-1500 RPM for 10 sec on, then 10 seconds off watching trans temp on display until temp reaches 160F). Then with it still running (in Park), check and adjust level as needed. This video shows converter stalls doing the same thing, but on a GM. Start watching at 7:50.

@@MasterJacks Thanks!
Have you had any luck/experience with a deeper pan, and what brand worked?
I haven't tried a deeper pan personally, so I don't have a good referral. Hope it goes well though, I know a lot of guys do it.
@@MasterJacks Thanks! How long did it take to do this job?
@@nickrinaldi4276 this one took about 3-4 hrs! Of course, it always goes slower trying to work around a camera 😄
Did you have to do a computer transmission reset?
No
Maybe if this transmission was reliable that job would be justified. But with the service intervals required to maintain this tranny thats just crazy lol. I am doing it now and one exhuast bolt was seized bad. Took me hours and used every trick in the book. Finally after enough heat it came out
The 10 speed isn't reliable?
@jostrander71 nope, the gm and ford 10speeds have had plenty of premature failure. But I've also hear if you keep the fluid changed every 50k or so and don't haul. They can last
Do you refill 12 qts or just 8.1
8.1
My 2020 is not same trans, 🤷🏽♂️
What a pain in the ass. Dealership it is.
what was the total cost for all parts and fluid for DIY? I was thinking I would do the job when I hit 50k but if it is still 400 at the dealer when my time comes it seems like money well spent.
I believe just under $150 for fluid, filter, pan gasket, and exhaust gaskets. $400 sounds quite reasonable!
torque the tires, lol
😂 not a lot of people are aware of the importance of properly torqued tires
Just buy a new one
