- This is a video I didn't want to make, but honestly, some folks have gotten out of control in the comments section. Personal attacks on me or other viewers = instaban. Political comments are removed once, second one = channel ban.
Please folks, lets just be nice to each other and have fun!

That sucks about those comments. You’re obviously a sweet person just trying to share knowledge, DIY info, and your hobby. Personal attacks are completely uncalled for. I do a show every Sunday night with my friend who’s a recording / mastering engineer, and we get some pretty horrific comments. It got to the point where we had to get a bunch of moderators, and we started banning people.
Just please keep in mind and know that 99.5% of people love this channel and have immense respect for you and what you do. This is absolutely one of my favorite channels, and so many people really do appreciate you and your kindness towards others. 🔊👍🎶😊💜
It's sad this rudeness isn't just a random person but has become commonplace. Just felt I needed to share this info for people who don't know about this side of things like YT and what we have to deal with!
Please receive my word of total support. Unfortunately social media has become a circus of people distilling all sorts of poisoned opinions and points of view that nothing contribute to any discussion. Thank you so much and keep up with your great work!
Well said
No need to apologize. Unfortunately there is a hateful minority who have been emboldened in recent times. However, they will always be out numbered by those who respect you and the work you are doing on this channel. I continue to look forward to your videos each week. Best regards from an ally down-under.
What you said.
RUclips seems to attract some folks who lack social skills and/or they are off their meds. You do a great job of being straightforward and informative just keep up the good work.
You’re absolutely right about commenters- the way you handle it is so admirable! Be yourself and to hell with folks getting their kicks trying to hurt others.
No need to apologise - personally speaking I think you are fantastic. Greetings from UK.
You do a wonderful job, Stephe. Please don't feel disheartened about some scumbags wanting to make their mark. They can leave their opinions at the door. We love the learning journey you provide and educational content you instill in your videos. Free online and open source learning of the highest merit is an ultra rare find in this hobby. If some amps test and measure crap they are just simply that, crap. We can't change what the manufacturer brings to market. Honest appraisals are always highly valued and truly respected by the community of followers here.
Stephe~ it's part of the RUclips culture to have rude and personal comments made, just a fact. The thing is that most have no clue and or just looking for a confrontation. As a trained and professional audio consultant (Acoustics), I can say that your channel is one of the best DIY audio on the web. What's important here is your willingness to experiment. Given the fact, as you say, you have no formal engineering degree, your knowledge and advice on tube amps is exceptional (My electronics training was acquired in the USAF and through various jobs in the IT industry, someone has to pay the rent)!!
Note: Personal attacks on one's person is a sure sign of ignorance and jealousy, ignore it...
As empress of Skunkie Designs, you can and should shut down the a-holes by royal decree.
Hey there! Just wanted to share some love and let you know that my husband and I love your channel. Your knowledge is so helpful and we truly enjoy watching your videos. You keep being you and doing what you are doing. Haters are going to hate because they aren’t you! Jealousy is makes people nasty.
Powder coating is a great idea. Last year I wanted to make a new ventilated cover for an old preamp which lacked sufficient ventilation resulting in issues with my 'audiophile' coupling caps. I purchased a piece of perforated sheet metal which I cut and bent to size then took the somewhat ugly looking slighlty rusty result to a powder coater (my first experience with powder coating). What I picked up a few days later was a beautiful smooth dull black finished factory looking cover. Wow, I was impressed. The coating seems very durable. The cost was $40.
Stephe, you're a legend. You get out there and tell it like it is.
People that attack you are saying more about themselves and their insecurities than you.
When you're doing great, people think you're a target.
We, the people, support you, love what you're doing and want you to keep going.
You're a legend here in New Zealand. ❤
I support anything that you do and the decisions you make. You have a wonderful channel and don’t forget about the future and the Conrad Johnson equipment. I still think your viewers would loved to see how high end equipment is made, but that’s in the future whenever you feel comfortable about wanting to look at it.
absolutely, I do need to get caught up and have too many plates in the air!
I'm rather new here, but just wanted to thank you for the channel & everything you're doing. I'm really enjoying your content & learning a LOT! Sorry that some people can be so hateful... Just know that the vast majority of us think you're awesome & really appreciate you sharing your knowledge & hifi journey with us.
Awesome! Thank you!
2A3 sounds interesting.
As for personal attacks imagine a 13yr old typing away in their bedroom wanting to cause angst, that's probably quite a few of them.
Powder coating is definitely the way to go for durability. The upcoming projects sound great. Keep your chin up and ignore the haters. I enjoy your positive attitude and willingness to share your knowledge and experience with the DIY community. Thanks!
I would not take any notice of a-holes. You are doing your best, sharing some knowledge, and helping folks out. If anyone takes exception to that they most certainly are an a-hole.
This ACRO project sounds really interesting. Their catalog is fascinating. Keep up the good work! Sadly, haters gonna hate. RUclips is a vulnerable place to be but it seems you are set up to deal with them as well as possible.
Hands up who reads comments on RUclips ? Me, never. Couldn't give a crap on what people think. Keep up your good work, makes me happy.
You’re great and your channel is awesome. I’m really sorry you have to deal with those losers, you don’t deserve it. You deserve to do your work free from that abuse. Keep up the great work!
Now if I could just figure out how to deal with some of these "engineers"... lol
I will personally volunteer to be the target of any inflammatory or derogative or insulting comments. I will say thank you and I hope that you have a great day to each and every one of them. It's amazing what internet and anonymity allows people to become the worst versions of themselves.
When I was serious note keep doing you. Unfortunately these people have always existed but now they can act away they truly want to act without any serious repercussions like being punched in the face in real life. I'm not advocating violence but we all know what we're talking about. I'm really excited to see what you have coming up. I'm still very impressed by your use of 3D space inside a chassis. You're one of the first people I've seen make serious use of that. Look forward to everything moving forward!
@Skunkie, I am so sorry to hear about the difficulties you been having with some comments here. Either I am ignorant or I just haven't come across any, but it is shocking. You are one of the You Tuber's that I would bow in reverence to given the work you put into your reviews and the construction of your amplifiers. (This is my #1 You Tube page BTW. #2 Is Cheap Audio Man, #3 is Skylabs Audio). You are among the few that actually fully test out an amp design...thoroughly. You are doing the right thing and you have been extremely attentive to the DIY community. So, I don't get why people would have a problem. If it is the naysayers that bought one of those Chinese made made amplifiers and they seem put off because you tested the amplifier and proved it had issues? I wouldn't listen to them at all. It was their fault for not properly looking into buying that stuff without doing their due diligence in properly checking out the reviews on it.
I am thankful that we have someone like you that goes through this trouble in the first place. It is this news on top of the issues you had with people ghosting you that is a great concern because I fear that you will end up getting fed up and then the world will not have the wonderful reviews and products from Skunkie anymore. I definitely get that the criticism hurts, especially when it is unwarranted. Just that there are just some people that think they know better, even when evidence is presented right to their face.
In terms of the amps. Yeah, sadly, unless you go DIY, there isn't a way around it, tube amps are expensive and that is mainly because GOOD transformers are expensive. Obviously the Chinese amps are built to a price point mainly because they want to sell it and it is clear they don't give a crap about the sound. They just pull up a basic circuit around the main output tube, which is probably the cheapest possible and toss a front end tube in that fits the socket and then put it in a pretty cabinet. All show and no go.
I do admit that I was curious with the Musical Paradise unit with your mods. Having a $300 tube amp to putz around with isn't that bad. But now, as you pointed out, it is hitting the $400, and if it really needs output transformers. Then, well, I think I am best sticking with your EL34 / 12AX7 design. ....now...I can't seem to find where I put that ST-70 chasis...
At any rate, take heart in knowing that there are MANY more here, including myself that appreciate all the work you do for the tube audio community and for the tube DIYer. As you said, if someone just comes out of the blue with a bad, or even out context remark, just delete it. You don't need that garbage, and neither do we. Keep up the great work and I am definitely going to look into that KT-88 amp when you build it. I know the KT-120's are out. I hope you do a couple variants based on the transformer such as a more inexpensive model using the Edcor's vs the Thermionic Labs transformers. Cheers!
I try to use keywords to capture these and if some make it through I delete them as it just detracts from the spirit of the channel. You shouldn't have to see that mess!
I love what you’re doing. Don’t ever change for the fools. You do you. I’ll be here to learn about electronics.
Sorry to hear about the comments and business challenges, shame there are such people out there. Don't let it let you down, we love what you do and learn a lot every time - I have enjoyed building a few of your amps for sure. Recently built the 'Bugle" 45 amp - very impressed - take a look sometime.
6j7 s! Can’t wait to hear what you do with them. I run two in my 300b. The issue is finding super high quality. So far, the NOS RCA s sound the best. Ps. I’m here because of you. Decent, open, honest.
Don't focus on the nasty jerks that are abusive, focus on the more than THIRTEEN THOUSAND people that support you. Think about that, you could fill a small stadium with people that want to hear what you say and see what you do in this hobby.
I've said it before, I'm a solid state guy but I love your videos so much---I've learned quite a bit and your channel is very entertaining and informative. Keep it going! Who knows, I may try so tubes down the road. ;)
Amazing channel and person!
Steph, unfortunately there are jerks everywhere. Fortunately there are many more people who appreciate what you have done and who have come to enjoy their equipment much more because of the thoughtful and thorough content you have posted. I am sure I am enjoying my Willsenton R8 more for having followed your series on the upgrades and mods you demonstrated. Your work is very good.
I very much enjoy your content. I can’t wait to build one of your projects!! Thank you for all you hard work!!
Thanks for watching!
From my point of view, which is by no means an audiophile, because I simply just like good sound, and my brain is not so "mathematical" to understand all these electronics and physics. But, in the last couple of years watching your channel I learned a lot and finally with your help I got my "perfect" sound...Now all that remains is to enjoy the music...Thank you endlessly..a kiss in the eye from Croatia
Great idea Stephe pairing up your colour preamp with the 'Vickers' (?) monoblocks👍! He's gonna be real happy now!
Exciting, fun stuff you've in store for us it's gonna be cool!
Some people just have to be assholes. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I'm grateful for what you offer us.
I love the 2A3 tube! but looking forward to your KT88 work
.... please ignore the negatives. Your 13,800 subscribers love you
I support you and your channel from the beginning. Keep doing what you're doing. We all learn a lot from you and you have a great channel. I also appreciate the honesty.
Hey there Steph like your channel, please don't get discouraged from these You Tube trolls, I support what you do thank you, I think your doing the right thing keep up with the good work.
You are appreciated. Keep doing good work.
😂 I am gullty of ganging up against the engineers with my biased opinions. Even that is bad and wrong. I will improve that behavior💫 I love your work and it has inspired me into building Amps again that i haven't done since my teens
I enjoy your channel and commentary. As a long time audio nut, tube gear guy, and technician I enjoy seeing others digging into the hobby. Keep it up.
Definitely no need to apologise Steph. Keep doing what you’re doing.
You are one of the most straight forward non bias RUclipsrs out there. Out of all of the Hi-Fi channels out there you are quickly becoming my favourite. Even though I don’t build amps I find the mod and build videos intriguing. You’re a legend!
Every bushel has bad apples in it....fact of life.... 🙂It's "not you, it's them"....LOL
Steph, I love the channel and your tube amp content. Really looking forward to the new KT88 UL amp build. Its a sad world we live in where you have to have to explain that hateful speech will not be tolerated in your comments. Keep it real and dont let the jerks get you down.
The world was much more polite and civilized, at least on the surface, before the internet. Younger people don't realize that there use to be just newspapers and magazines, and you mailed in your comments to the editor of those publications. You had to supply your name and address which were usually verified, and the nasties and loonies were weeded out. Although I appreciate the speed with which we can get things accomplished and the almost instant gratification, I do miss the old days where things went at a slower pace and we had time to think before we acted. Anyway, all we can do is keep on truckin' and do the best we can under the circumstances.
I really like this channel. I have already learned many new things and you obviously know how to design, build and troubleshoot amps. Thank you for all that you do. I am sorry you have to deal with the Trolls.
Will vincent is a dynamo at-70 rebuilder who is incredibly design-oriented. They look fantastic. He’s done some organ amps as well. you can reach him by phone if u find the number. His email is public, but he may not answer.
His primary contact appears to be audiogon listings.
Really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work and don’t let the ignorant bastards get you down.
Love what you do, love your content, thanks for all you do!
Finally got the chassis work and mechanical assembly done on the EL34 amp done. Looking forward to wiring it.
H, i you are greatly appreciated! This is cerrainly not a place for political ot hatefull chat, I like to talk about politics, I just do it on appropriate places, that's simple. ❤
You are doing great, there is a show called’The Orville’ it has an episode diving into this topic. Love your effort and experience you share.
I will check it out
You're a positive force in this world. Keep it going.
Thank you!
Always enjoy the Monday Monologue. Thanks for sharing.
On a side note...i remember you saying in the past that the caps you prefer are the Mundorf Aluminum oils. Are you referring to the Mcap Aluminum Oils...the white with red writing? Thanks for everything 👍
Yeah, those are the ones. And I only use those for coupling caps. For speakers I really like the Jantzen superior "red" caps.
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Right on. I had a couple pairs of the Mcap Aluminum Oil's that I was asking you about come in yesterday. I wanted to double check if these were the ones you felt were pretty good. I definitely appreciate the size of them..I was relieved to see how small the 2.2uF value is.
Thank you for all that you do & for being helpful to a lot of us out here. Have a great day today Skunkie.
This is the best tube amp information site that you can learn from . GREAT INFO….
Thanks for the educational support and help in the tube amplifier and pre amp information. I was wondering about that color preamp and about matching up to a solid state amp. The impedance and ohms input and output stuff. And how to do correctly.
Just stay with SS amps above about 50Kish impedance, which is the majority of them.
Dont let a few naysayers get you down. Keep up the good Work.
Well said Stephe, unfortunately when dealing with the general public it's inevitable that these things happen. Anyhoo, best wishes from the UK
I ❤ this channel.
I agree with the comments people have said in support of you!
You’re doing good. I appreciate your work!
Unfortunately these people are everywhere now, hiding behind their social media keyboards, ready to attack. I also feel sorry for those people on other forums who are novices and want to seek some advice about something and in come the Demi god members with their superior patronising knowledge to shred some poor guy to bits just to boost their own ego. It’s a sad world when people become like this. I’m glad you’re not like that and are willing to kindly share your advice and knowledge. Peace and love to all!
That less tube-like character can also boil down to parts choices when an amp is run high and hot.. Eg, a good mix of metal film and carbon film and comp R’s in select positions usually alleviates that cold character.. The tube rectifier plays a part too, eg, if you use a Sovtek rectifier, you get a thin shrill grainy signature IME..
Interesting, I just did a group listening session and we tried 3 different rectifiers, a sovtek, a made in Japan NOS and a vintage Millard, no one heard any difference. Maybe with a weak, poorly designed power supply they can be heard?
The other way around for me.. With a well designed PSU you hear more of the deficiency of the lower quality parts..Eg, a UF4007 Schottky Vs. a common 1N4007.. With something poorly designed and low quality parts everything turns into mush even if you put a German made Mesh type Directly Heated Rectifier in there..@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
I don't doubt you might hear a cheap silicon rectifier. I'm just sharing my experience with swapping rectifier tubes and I tried this in other amps as well. Maybe you are saying all these amps have poorly designed power supplies and they sound like mush? I guess it's like some folks swear they hear speaker cables etc too? I don't.
Hi Stephe.. I’m not invalidating your experiences.. But we do hear different things more often than not.. I can hear cap differences especially in SE non NFB.. OPT differences.. Even cable differences, sometimes depending on the cables.. We try to make the supply as stiff as possible cos it is still in the current loop signal path.. But i Don’t obsess about it.. It is much much harder to hear a good Electro-Harmonix 5U4GB vs an NOS RCA 5U4GB.. But I start to hear some crud with Sovtek or bottom model Shuguang.. That’s with my ears.. There’s a diy guy who calls ‘em tube rectumfriers back in the day😅..@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
Always looking forward to the Monday Monologue and all your videos for that matter
I enjoy learning about tube components as I have a lot to learn so thank you for that
Subscribed, like, comment and Patreon supporter
Looks like some excellent content on the way and glad you are going to do what you want to do
“ Make it fun again” sounds political LOL
I always say, this is supposed to be fun, right ?
I follow you on Audiokarma and I watch every video you produce, though here I am under a different name. Yes there are Big A-holes everywhere. I hope you know that most of us truly value what you are doing, and appreciate your enthusiasm for our hobby. I have acquired much more knowledge based on your videos, really love your digging into the amps people send you. Am irritated that you are getting crap from doughnut heads. Sending you a donation to your channel.
Cool, thanks
You're awesome! I can't stand the idiotic and mean comments I see either... good on you for blocking these assholes and keeping it out of here and out of your life. Looking forward to your upcoming projects ...especially those monoblocks! :). Keep it up as long as it's fun for you!
Thank you.
I know you don’t like EQs, but I was thinking of incorporating a loop in my modded A10. Like an effects loop on a guitar amp. That way you could use an eq in the loop if needed, and simply unplug it for max transparency. Could be a fun little project. Also, I take it that incorporating your headphone box into the A10 would use the same schematic?
An ultra linear switch / triode in the A10 would be cool too!
Or just a separate loop box?
Good rant! Yeah, people really are turning to a bad way.
Hi Steph, I have been following your channel since the Reisong A12 mods. Those modifications total transformed that little amp. Since then I upgraded many parts and plan on upgrading the output transformers. I really appreciate the work you have put into the channel, it’s been an educational journey. Any plans on revisiting the A12, I would love to see what you would do different now. Thanks so much, Gary
Don't have any plans to. Be interesting to see what an OT upgrade would do!
Congrats!
Continued success.
Your videos are a highlight for me.
I hate to contribute. The one smart Alec commenter usually comes with a mocking cartoon.
Thanks.
Keep up the great work and content and ignore the haters. RUclips is filled with this A-Holes. Your heart is at the right place.
If I was nearby I'd give you a hug, have you build me an amp, and try to learn the knowledge you've acquired. Love your content. Hang in there.
Rebuild and reviews of Dynaco st70 amp and Pas3 preamp would be great and highly informative. Like your channel. Thanks
👍👍👍Thanks. Purely hifi only for like minded people.
I am from China, I support you, don't pay attention to those crazy people.
Thank you for recognizing that Stephe doesn't automatically trash Chinese products. When it's good, it's good.
@@1mctous As a Chinese, I also hate China's counterfeit and shoddy products.
I am looking forward to seeing your 2A3 amp that could be a nice pairing with my Valencias. Are you planning to sell prefabed chassis in the end? Cheers
Yeah these were build by someone else, but we will go over them in detail!
6C33C for me!!
Hey Skunkie, got a quick question for you, what's the gain/Resistance/Capacitance on the phono stage? Is there an option to select different values or a way to adjust to the cartridge? (I am sure this is complicated stuff)
EAR834? read the schematics. usually R is 47K input, the EAR has to be at least 30db gain.
The capacitance is normally high enough in the internal turntable wiring and the cables to cover that part of the cart loading. Actually it takes careful cable selection to not end up with too much capacitance! Resistance is the normal 47k like almost every MM cart I have seen wants. This pre I believe has about 55db of gain, it's pretty hot!
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Oh yeah, pretty hot indeed, cheers Skunkie!
Have you ever tested/heard Tubes Type 45?
I have not, sorry.
I'm sorry about your troubles with the unnecessary and inflammatory comments - even small channels like this attract unwarranted attention from undesirables. But, on balance, I do think it was the correct decision to change the title of that video. No need to be accused of stooping to the same level as the numpties.
Block the hate filled keyboard warriors.
I like your Chanel,…you build cool stuff and I learn a lot how to build an Tube Amp in the right way. Don’t worry about some stupid Morons.👍👍👍😉
Hey Stephe, I sent you two emails about buying an amp but didn't get a reply.
You mean you sent me two emails back to back within a couple of days, yes I am trying to take a short vacation and haven't replied to every email.
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics not back to back, I waited 2 weeks after the first mail.
Thanks, got your reply.
OK that was someone else.
❤️What's a good new production. GZ34. ?? I'm all out of vintage. Thanks. Keep cool n keep the faith
I've had pretty good luck with Sovtek
👍♥️🫂. Gracias 🫂👍
