I recently discovered that I am a distant decendent of John Sheppard. Pretty cool to hear this all these years after he was around, knowing that about 0.0015% of my DNA is from him.
This piece struck me, staggered me when I first heard it about 14 years ago. I must have played it a dozen times in three days at almost full volume. I like and appreciate other composers of Sheppard's time, but somehow this work wins the gold medal. I hate it when everyone I know has no idea what I am talking about.
I know what you’re talking about. This masterpiece is a sonic journey to Heaven. I love this version, but my favourite one is still by Martin Baker and the Choir of Westminster Cathedral, London : the slowest of them all, and yet so short despite its 30 minutes. You’d wish it would never end. And boys’ voices are irreplaceable (when they’re good).
How could I not have discovered your remarkable interpretation of this masterpiece sooner ? Of the six I know, you’re my second favourite - just behind Martin Baker, sorry. I’ll be listening to you often, because it’s always interesting, not to say essential, when you love a work, to deepen your knowledge of it by listening to multiple interpretations. I see your albums are on Qobuz, I will start to purchase them soon.
Goodness gracious this recording is fantastic! 23 minutes of rock solid intonation on this stunning piece, and I don't know how those sopranos maintain such ease up in that range for so long!
Wow thanks so much Keith for your kind words. It's a masterpiece and I cannot wait to perform it LIVE with a ton of singers on the other side of this pandemic.

I had the exact same experience around that same time. I’m with you.

Looks as though the artwork is no longer available on the linked website....
Ressemble beaucoup à Tallis.
