• You can compost unpainted finger-/toenail clippings and undyed hair and pet hair. • Use an old toothbrush to clean jewellery. • Use old and clean candle jars to hold kitchen items or makeup remover wipes. • Use random fabric to wrap gifts and ask them to use or return the fabric.
I LOVE that you're still finding so many ways to do zero waste for free! One that I have is to use the handle part of an old bamboo toothbrush as a plant name marker in a garden or flower pot. Sometimes I forget what I planted so these markers are perfect for remembering for me. Of course, this can be after you've used it as a cleaning brush for a bit, too.
I literally have a bag with gifts in it people have gotten me that I don't like waiting for either an office holiday swap or another friend to pick through them during a visit
• Hole punching leaves to make confetti • "Bottom of the jar" recipes (eg: making peanut sauce with the last bit of peanut butter, or raspberry vinaigrette with the last bit of jam) • Homemade glue (flour and water paste) or tape (flour and water paste on a strip of paper) • Pick up pens off the ground... I am a student and usually it's ballpoint pens, but I got a really nice gel pen the other day. Other than that, I do use a swap, and that's my fountain pen. but fountain pens are $$ up front
I love your tips! I wanted to add a few more: For those who still use plastic for toilet paper- I use it as bin bags so there’s no “new” waste I use old t shirts as cushion covers I use pieces of apple (peel and core and add water and brown sugar and put in a jar- this makes lovely homemade apple cider vinegar. I believe you can do this with citrus fruits too. Instead of using a garden waste service, I make a compost pile in my garden. I have lovely compost every year because of it. Where possible, I propagate my plants Any food safe pots (like big yoghurt or peanut butter) I use to grow greens from. Any clothing with slogans or any pretty fabrics are used within frames or as a canvas- unique AND free 😅
I wanted to add- if there are any swiffer mop users- use old towels to sweep/mop instead of the disposable ones. You can also use old pillows to shine glass/mirrors ❤
I thought of a very random way to be more eco friendly! Since moving in with my partner a few years ago, we became a no-shoe household. This was for cleaning purposes but vacuuming less means using less electricity too😎 This wasn’t common where I grew up but I’ll never go back!
Not sure if this has been in another episode but feeding food scraps to pets! My pet rats get a fresh meal daily along with their mix And that fresh meal is almost always the food scraps left from cooking Today was the outer leaves of Brussel sprouts the core of red pepper and some leftover brown rice all just chucked in the microwave to cook the Brussel sprouts!
When I was a kid raising rabbits & guine pigs the man at the produce market saved the outside leaves of lettuce for me I’d pick up walking home from school. Animals thought it a treat to their alpha pellets.
Omg I just talked about garage sale signs yesterday! I wish cities just put up official signs with a QR code that takes you to a website with today’s community events like garage sales & allow anyone to submit their own event for approval. Some things I do: I keep my phone on battery save mode all day. (Not sure how it effects the longevity of the battery, but that’s what I currently do.) Once my phone is fully charged, I unplug it. My phone is also set to charge until the middle of the night when energy is less used.
my brothers towels got destroyed by his cats so rather than throwing them away my mum gave them to me and they're now a great absorbent layer for my guinea pig cages!
A tip for zero waste go to a refill store you don't need pretty jars you can buy glass food jars, plastic bottles you already have, etc and bring your own container to the refill store and you save so many bottles that way
The sewage blockage point is definitely serious. I live in an apartment complex and sheer amount of issues and pollution caused by one person flushing underwear 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
So true! My ground floor apartment got flooded when someone on the floor above us tried to flush dried pasta and wet wipes 🙄 we had to replace so much stuff just because our neighbors couldn't be bothered to walk to the trash can.
I’ve always lived on a septic tank so while I do want to start reclaiming some gray water for gardening, I often forget that most people water isn’t going to the yard anyway lol.
Oh I used to play June's Journey a looooot. Then I removed all apps because I was bad at managing screen time. I'm better now, so I was thinking of going back. Guess that's my sign hahah ♒ -iykyk OK enough puns

Yes to not releasing balloons! And to add to the recycling textiles advice, there are also programs specifically for recycling shoes.
