Btw, most of the expoloits you mention are outdated and dont work. Units in the queue will be splitt between both factions. Also, you cannot delete some of the starting units. The NKVD cant be deleted and WILL stay soviet. There are still some exploits tho. One is making all your units into a bad template. (like a single artillery) right before the war fires. Then you just change your template when you take over as the whites. The AI isnt allways smart enough to fix the templates. There is the exploit that to avoid equipment being shared between both factions, you can send litteraly all your equipment to a country at war, like spain, right before your civil war starts. The equipment always needs a month to ship. The time in between, the equipment is in limbo, and neither your nor the soviets will get the equipment. But you can recall the lend lease as soon as you become the whites, and youll have all the equipment. But I dont recomend you do any exploits. Quite frankly I find it quite boring. The war is far from imposible, there are mechanics to help you and make it harder for the soviets, like their units deserting to you and tags like ukraine, belarus and kazackstan being able to rise upp as well. Try to take the supply hubs, thats the most important part. Having the war go slow is actually prefrable in a way. The desertation events I mention can bring over a Soviet general on your side. The whites dont have generals, and getting some soviet ones helps a lot.
I wasn't worried about the war being "impossible" or too difficult, just felt that invading Russia from the east is incredibly grindy and tedious due to the supply issues and didn't seem like a fun first war for the campaign. I also see most civil wars as an obstacle to the start of the campaign rather than an interesting part of it, with a few exceptions like the US or Spain. But next episode I ask everyone's opinion on this matter, as I'll avoid all exploits if that's what the majority wants.
Playing the Tsarists you usually set up your capital in Chita and then build up the main railways going west. You get more divisions during the war but early on you have to decide if you want to go to war with the various countries that break away from the Soviets. You want to do the on map decisions to take all the states heading west and controlling the main railway. You can lend lease your equipment to Spain or someone else then cancel it to cheese they equipment side of the Civil War.
From others have told me, seems you have to set up the capital in Chita. In today's episode, I very much do just follow the rails west as that seems to be the best way to go, then we can either quickly take over the other Siberian states, or allow the Soviets to move in there where they won't have any supply and can be easily destroyed.
I felt that invading Russia from the east would be incredibly grindy and tedious due to the supply issues, so didn't seem like a fun first war for the campaign. Oooh! Welcome back. Hope you all had a great time in Europe. Looking forward to the Russia playthrough as an Aussie Russophile. Oh, and make sure you do the Women's Fascist movement because not only do girls rule, but iirc you get to keep the bonus forever? Iirc.
We had a great time in Europe! I was hesitant to do that focus because of the increase to fascist influence, but the bonuses are too good not to so I do it next episode.
excited to see the new series start and funnily enough i have been watching a few people play " last train home " which is set during the rise of the red army so its kinda like watching the beginning and the end of communist Russia
@PraetorianHiJynx The game is okay; storyline is good, mechanics are decent, but I feel like it could use an increase in difficulty - 7 chapters in and I can't say I was ever in a position to lack something (men, fuel, food, ammo) or have to make tough choices (leaving people behind, not visiting points of interest, not completing side quests, having to chose on what to spend materials etc.) That can be easily tweaked, though, as more people play the game and devs get more information.
I played a similar run when this content released (so stuff might have changed). I think you only get the provinces wich you infiltrate (you can also use this to your advantage by cutting off certain areas for easy conquering once the civil war starts). You will also see random rebellions all over Russia were you will get few troops wich usually just get smashed because they are often far away from your borders (those are more distractions for the Soviets than anything). I only tried it once, so I can't compare different approaches but I think that the faction support plays a role in the frequency of those random rebellions during the civil war.
Chita is always the capital of the Tsarist Restoration. You can give Vladivostok to Japan in exchange for weapons and support so that is why you don't have that as your capital.
Did Monarchist Russia right after NSB was released (my second ever hoI campaign). Trick is to just infiltrate provinces along the railway and let Soviets starve in Siberia and far east. During war you get bonus unit for liberating major cities, naval bases and (not 100% sure) encirclements.
Yeah that's what I do in today's episode, move along the rails west, in the hope that the Soviets will move into the northern Siberian territory where they won't have supply and can easily be destroyed.
@1:02:47 You can only get territories that boarder the ones you control, and they AI may snake towards Moscow rather than secure it's rear flank, I am not sure. But you can get partisans that rise up in random spots and so take some deeper territory that way. You do want to get the Covert Operations focus as you can use that to frame generals that are otherwise loyal to Stalin to get purged and that reduces the paranoia so you get more time to secure more territory for yourself before the civil war starts.
I've seen them get territory around the Black Sea in multiple playthroughs that wasn't connected to the rest of their territory (and thus is quickly conquered by the Soviets). Perhaps it was partisan units though. I do get the Covert Operations focus in today's episode :)
Pretty sure you dont do mods anymore, but I still want to mention that Kaiserreich just came out of beta and is now in version 1.0 with the major 2-years in the making Germany rework, the largest focus tree in the mod.
@51:02 You set Spain to go Communist, so you do want to send volunteers to fight there and help them, otherwise they will likely lose the civil war. It's hard for anyone other than the fascists to win that war without support.
Yeah I want the communist to win, but was trying to avoid actually assisting them, hence why I wanted to instead support the Carlist. Seems the Soviet Union isn't allowed to send volunteers to any side but the Republicans though.
I'm not sure about deleting the units but the NKVD can't be deleted and like someone said, they all go against you. If you delete all the units, then you just end up with no units and the soviets have a bunch and they steamroll over everything.
Yes, I pointed our in the video that we couldn't edit the NKVD units (and thus also can't delete them). But there are only 18 of those and they're not great. Keep in mind that we will start with units due to the focuses that grant them once the civil war starts.
I'm not sure how long the series will take. Seems my HOI4 campaigns are around 20-30 episodes, and I generally do about 5-6 per week. So perhaps 4-6 weeks?
Never played this side of the three but as paranoia seems manageable (you basically just get it up and chose the worst thing for communist Russia) why not increase your control aggressively?
Don't delete the units please. It's too gamey for my taste. That you generally don't use exploits is one of the strengths of your content. RUclips is full of people who make exploit videos, it's no good for you going down that path.
I discuss this in episode 2, but I felt that invading Russia from the east would be incredibly grindy and tedious due to the supply issues, so didn't seem like a fun first war for the campaign. I also see civil wars as an obstacle to the start of the campaign rather than an interesting part of it, with a few exceptions like the US or Spain. So next episode I ask everyone's opinion on this matter, as I'll avoid all exploits if that's what the majority wants. To be clear though, me using exploits to avoid one tedious civil war in one campaign does not mean that I would start making "exploit videos" :)
Russia sold that though, it wasn't taken from them. If we go to war with the US due to other reasons then we'll take Alaska, but we won't go to war just for it.
Interesting playthrough, looking forward to seeing where this goes.
good stuff, just commenting for the youtube algo. Have a nice day sir!

Gotta admit, deleting all your divisions on a civil war run is some Legendoftotalwar levels of cheese. You run, though.

@@PraetorianHiJynx Yeah, that's a decent reason. I just dislike exploits as a rule, since I feel like they take away from the game.

I think it looks like fun. the combat is RTS style. well you have to upgrade your train with loot you scavenge, steal or trade for. @@PraetorianHiJynx

@PraetorianHiJynx no mods well how about road to 56 brazil I think it's right up your alley
Good to see a new series, be careful not to end up as a Japanese puppet, that really sucks
I believe that only happens if you take the focus for it, which we won't do.

Gosh, I haven’t played this game in a hot minute. Is that focus tree new? Feels like it.
Yes, the Soviets got a new focus tree in the No Step Back expansion, which released two years ago.

I think since doing return of the tsar why not use some of there names for the units. Examples for some thing is Vladimers for infantry or tanks
Thanks for the suggestion :)
How do you support an attack with a unit without being part of the units moving into the new territory?
Ctrl and right click on the combat bubble.
