    So gentlemen , I am fairly new. I began watching about the time COVID attacked your little family. Today I watched past podcasts and tutorials. One Christmas tutorial one of you said some people did not like Arne laughing. I am flabbergasted at that comment. Laughter is a blessing to hear. Please do not be silenced by some Grumpy Gus comment. The laughter is part of the pleasure and calmness I receive from listening to you two. As once said by a famous couple “ As always,”a newly devoted fan. Keep smiling and laughing.

    Erik is just invaluable!😁
    Tips for using the left leaning increase: if anyone is knitting a seamless sweater top down (starting from the neckline), you should increase towards the right before the raglan stitch and towards the left after the raglan stitch so that the stitches fan out the right way from the raglan of your sweater. I know you guys prefer knitting sweaters starting from the bottom but I think a lot of beginners are taught to knit sweaters top down first😊
    I've kinda been having a hard time lately so your come-back couldn't have come at a better time, thanks for cheering me up and reminding me to knit three times now this week💖hälsningar till er från Budapest!

    I understand Carlos’ dislike of seagulls. I once took my children on what I thought would be a nice picnic on the shores of Lake Superior. The minute I took the sandwiches out we were dive bombed by about 30-40 gulls, screeching and grabbing right out of our hands. I had to throw the food up and we ran to the car and off to a local eatery, where we peacefully ate inside. I use left and right leaning increases when mirroring a section, like in a shawl. I was taught first the pick up the strand between and knit in the back for left and front for right, Arne's demonstration looks easier to me so will try it next time. Thanks again.

      It is good to learn about the various situations where you need to know whether to work a left-leaning or right-leaning decrease. I am working on Stephen West's "Boneyard Shawl" now, and the pattern is very specific about which one to use at this point or that.
      You can see very clearly in that shawl how using the correct direction of M1 increase is essential. The shawl is worked predominantly in stockinette with a center "spine", a knit stitch surrounded by M1 increases, M1R and M1L. So, as Arne has pointed out, sometimes these increases also serve as a design element.

  • @jaebee9308
    @jaebee9308 3 года назад +1

    I apologize if someone has already said this, but -- it's important to know that when Arne does the left leaning increase, he is then knitting the new stitch, once its placed on the left needle, by putting his right needle into the BACK of that stitch. Not the front. As opposed to when he knits the regular increase (right leaning), he knits the new stitch as normal- into the front of that stitch. If, when doing the left increase, you knit that new stitch through the front as you would normally knit- you will get a hole. It's also really difficult to do.
    So-- Right leaning increases get knit into the front as normal. Left leaning increases get knit into the back of the stitch.
    If you slow the video down, you will be able to see how he does it.

    Hi guys. Thanks for the tutorial. i think you're such excellent, experienced knitters it's difficult for you to notice what you're doing. One difference you did but didn't mention between left and right-leaning increases, is that in the left-leaning increase you're knitting into the back of the stitch.
    Enjoy the rest of your beautiful trip. And thanks for sharing the Norwegian scenery with us!

    My dear friends Arne and Carlos, I am using this tutorial to help teach my students how to knit the mitten gusset on Norwegian Mittens. It is important that you both agree on the technique to not confuse my students. I will be forwarding this link to my students as a warm up to my lesson tomorrow, and hopefully they don't get caught up in the discussion that several examples are not necessary when applying the left leaning increase to a make 1 situation. I know you are away in this video and having a mitten example may have been out of the realm of possibilities, however, if you could revisit this with a mitten example that might be helpful as the viewer can actually see the contrast in colours and how the gusset colour stands out. It is my objective to give my students a joyful experience when knitting mittens. Mitten knitting is joyful. Thank you for all you do.

    Not having made mittens, I never thought of a right or left increase; of course left and right is used for decreases. I loved seeing the harbor and docks and listening to the seagulls. Hearing seagulls always reminds me of my grandfather taking us for early morning walks on the boulevard in Gloucester, Ma, USA which is a fishing community. They can scream!! But I love them. Don’t worry, Carlos, as long as you don’t have food in your hand or feed them they will leave you alone. If your throw out even the smallest scrap of food your will have the whole flock surrounding you and they won’t leave! Love you both and thank you for continuing your video journals; I have learned much and I love being a part of the world wide Arne and Carlos family. Can you tell I don’t get out much still due to Covid by how long my post is? :-)

    Your temporary relocation for doing tutorials is a great idea. Thank you for the content and the stunning locations. I have been looking up the places on your road trip on a map to see exactly where you are. Did I understand correctly that each tutorial in this series will be in a different location in the Lofoten Islands? If so, would it be possible to have a little scenic minute at the end of each tutorial, perhaps a 360 degree panorama or something like that? Just wishing ...

    As always your videos are great. I have had many pattern, shawls, sweaters etc that have specified for either the left or right increase. However, I do agree w Carlos it would be important to maybe include or specify which increase to do for your patterns b/c eventhough it may be understood as a Norwegian custom in order to get the beautiful patterning shown on your mitts a person wanting to learn may be discouraged if they are trying to increase and b/c the pattern doesn't specify ; they wouldn't be getting the proper results. It may not come naturally to them to try a left increase or they may not know there is such a thing depending on their experience level.

    Love the new video format. Scenery is beautiful as always. How about a stop by the island of Lovund on your way home to see the puffins and give a shout out to the local salmon farm.

    Wonderful trip to the Lofoten, enjoy ! There are a lots more ways for in/de creases left or right. It can give such a nice effect on our projects. I use the loop between to stitches, left or right. Amazing the differents.

    I use a M1A [ make 1 away... wrap around my thumb] for my gusset increases....the only difference is that one wrap is clockwise and the other is counter-clockwise. Thanks!

    I don't know what I like better. I understand not moving your finger up to move the yarn to the front to purl. I was moving the yarn to the front with right needle if it was stuck behind. I do think your way may have better tension. I'm not sure yet. I'm gonna do some more rounds of each. I have to get used to your method so it's unfair descisions right now. I kind of liked twisting and untwisting. I'm supposed to be learning twisted rib. Had to learn your purl to do your twisted ribbing. I think others are twisting the purls. You're twisting the knits.

    The 07:28 mark brought back a great argument in the film CONAN THE BARBARIAN, where Grace Jones gets mad and shuts them up:
    “.... My cousin’s sister’s brother never said anything about bars! .... after your sister’s brother’s cousin.... cousin’s sister’s brother! ... you said your sister’s brother’s cousin!
    Grace Jones: “WHO CARES WHOSE BROTHER’S SISTER’S COUSIN IT IS?! WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE!?”
    Can listen to it here👇🏾

    Hi Eric!!

    I’m so glad you did this video because I only do right leaning increases on my sweaters (knit flat) and someone asked me about it and I said: “ I don’t know, you’d need to watch Arne and Carlos for that, cause that’s where I learned to increase.”
    Because of your videos though, I no longer stress over knitting, it’s like art, and enjoyable. I’m almost done with the Vegard sweater, and I’m so happy with it. I chose a levi colour and the roses are the cream white kidsilk ..
    I do have one question: I want a sweater that I can wear in the winter, that is sort of water proof..if I were to knit a chunky wool, on 4mm needles, would that create the density and protection I’m looking for? Or would there be a better way to approach it?

      @ARNECARLOS  4 года назад

      Instead of looking at the thicknessC we’d recommend you focus on the quality. Wool in general is naturally water resistant. What you need to look for is a 100% wool which is not super washed. That will be a great choice for a sweater that will keep you warm and dry.

    As always, really look forward to your videos and just love to watch you two interact. I am wanting to knit your Save the Children cardigan with Plotulopi yarn. Do you think that would be a good choice? If so, would I need to knit with double strands? Also, I am wondering if mixing it with mohair would soften it. I have been told that mixing mohair with an Icelandic wool will not soften it at all so it was a waste of money. Please share with me your opinion and guidance please. Thanks so much for all you do for us.

    Just watched this video on increasing.....would the left increase be used on a sleeve when it calls for an increase on each side of the sleeve??

    • @ARNECARLOS

      You could yes, but probably best to use the one the pattern suggests!

    Our patterns often call forr a left leaning "knit two together" and a right leaning "SSK" -- or is it the other way around? I'll have to go knit a row and see!

    I too have a bird issue - I am Finnish Canadian, and I was raised to believe that a bird at the window, or one that gets into the house, means death. In theory, I like birds - but at a safe distance ...😁

    I just wrap the needle, then on the next round,knit into the back of the wrapped stitch for thumb gusset. What do you think? I learned it from a Norwegian lady.
