    I’m sure I’m just another one that’s going to suggest Steel Battalion with its massive controller for the X-Box! Great Stuff!
    Edit: I also faced the same hurdles when trying to readjust to the Perfect Dark controls when it landed on Nintendo Switch Online. That game definitely needs quality of life adjustments. So close, yet so far. I know exactly how you feel.

    I feel you on a spiritual level here. I picked my twin stick up and it made virtual on just a pleasure. I haven't tried the other games yet I completely understand where you're coming from. I personally suck with dual analog stick so I'm kind of interested in seeing how I do. Fun side note. I modded my twin stick with a retro bit Bluetooth Saturn controller. Works great. I mapped out the inputs with Street Fighter Alpha. It was very simple and straightforward.

    Good stuff here. I like the bold honesty that you don't enjoy using the sticks for much outside of Virtual On. I think it's something many would agree with. It's a peripheral made with one game in mind, and then adapted to work with a few others.

    • @TheSouthernSegaGentleman
      @TheSouthernSegaGentleman  5 лет назад

      That's the real rub man. What the Saturn really needed was a dual analog equivalent. That would have drastically changed how some of theses games handled.

    • @SegaLordX

      This is actually one area I felt Sega was really behind Sony. It continued on to the DC too, a controller I actually disliked quite a bit in both design and lack of a second stick.

    • @TheSouthernSegaGentleman
      @TheSouthernSegaGentleman  5 лет назад

      I didnt mind the DC controller honestly, but that lack of a second stick was outright stupid on Sega's part. With as innovative as their first party releases during that era were, I still dont understand how they made so many mistakes. No DVD drive, 2nd thumb stick, only 6 buttons, and the list goes on.

    The only Virtual On I've played (and own) is Oratorio Tengram for the Dreamcast, which looks like it controls a bit better with a standard pad since it sort of has an auto-lock and auto-turns you when you jump to face your opponent iirc. It definitely does _something_ - watching the footage here, and hearing you talk about struggling to turn and keep up with your opponent, definitely doesn't look or sound like how Virtual On DC handled it. Really though, this vid just makes me wanna plug in the old Dreamcast and give it a whirl again to check to see if my memory's correct here :P
    At any rate, awesome video and overview of this joystick and these games. Love this channel; glad I've discovered it - everything you do is gold, man!

      Oh I'm still shit at VO man 🤣 I've tried numerous playstyles and tried implementing a number of tips, but I've just never got the hang of it. The gameplay is just different from almost anything else. But bad at it or not, I still love the franchise. The sticks really did turn up the fun factor 10 fold though, and took me back to those days back in 98 playing on a real cab.

    • @danmakuman
      @danmakuman 5 лет назад

      With the Twin Sticks on the DC you still have auto lock when you jump or dash. It works well because also you have the chance to do some movement manually without the need to do those actions first.

    Oh man, awesome episode. I LOVED Virtual ON: Operation Moongate. I had the PC version and I played it to death. As with you, I only found out about the twinsticks later in life. Great soundtrack selection from the OST too, really brings me back. I found it was charming how each of the virtuoid mechas had little Sega Saturn consoles mounted to their backs. I feel like the gameplay still holds up today. I only wish they re-released the game for modern consoles or even ported it officially to steam or something.

    To keep the oponent on sight, use the jump function as often as possible combined with the rapid descent...then you got some grips on the control scheme of the twinsticks. To execute a rapid descent is the opposite of jump...my only gripe is that they didn't make a boost function after a jump but that was fixed on oratorio tangram.

    After a satisfying eBay purchase I made of Virtual-On for my Saturn console and the Twin Stick, I stumbled upon this vid showing them in action. Fortunately, mine did not have a faulty pin, but I can imagine tearing my hair out seeing those ghost inputs lol. The Twin Stick makes V-On so much fun by dashing and blasting Virtualoids away. Hi again SSG!
    This is a great documentry of the Virtual Twin Sticks.
    Don't worry, I had the same hurdles to overcome with using these while playing Virtual On. I will take your word for it that they are mostly used for that game and not the others.
    BTW, Don't know if you are aware of this but if you absolutely love Virtual On, you should try out the Dreamcast game 'Oratorio Tangram' with the Dreamcasts Twin Sticks next. It's known by many fans to be the best game in the series.
    Finally, there is a better and more enhanced port of the original game for the Japanese PS2's Sega Ages 2500 series which I also highly reccommend. However, I am not sure if any Twin Sticks were even made available to buy on the PS2. Gonna look into that now.

    If you extend Twin Stick usage to the Dreamcast, I can say I love mine. I bought 2 for a perfect arcade reenactment.
    The one thing that carried over from Saturn to Dreamcast is game-specific peripherals. Almost all Japanese-only, as their market seems to endorse that level of fandom.
    I do feel you on trying to find additional games to use for a cool controller. The one thing though is that their button layout was specific for VO. Few other games can be "dumbed down" to 4 buttons and still feel fluid. Gundam looked like it could be ok. But you explaining GG2 reminded me, and I could sense-memory, your pain.

    Seeing this video makes me glad that I always checked and clean the controller plugs when I got new controllers and sticks from amazon because the people selling the items never make an effort clean them before selling them. I even had to give a genesis game I bought 3 years a hard scrubbing because the cart was very dirty and could have ruined the cart slot if I just stuck it in there without inspecting first.

  • @threadthathasnoend1212

    I've only used it for Virtual on on the saturn. And I may be biased (look at my profile pic) but I love it. I have also played around with a usb adapter and used it with the windows version of the original Virtual on and emulated versions of the original arcade, oratorio tangram, and MARZ. All of those work great, as expected. I played around with it in some modern fps games and space sims like elite dangerous for laughs. The fact it's digital means it's not great for non-arcade style games, but I think it's the only way to play what it was designed for.

      Agreed, like I said at the end of the vid, when used as it was originally intended, it's an absolutely amazing peripheral and completely changes the game. But for FPS, it's just not what I wished it was. Still playable, but not the anolog experience we needed.

    Another great video, I've had my Twin Sticks for about 22 years now, and all this time I've only believed it to work with Virtual On. In the end it doesn't matter if I had know about the other games or not, since it seems that those games simply don't control well with the Twin Sticks anyway, so I'm not missing out on anything. But for Virtual On alone? Yeah they're worth it!

    A video worth waiting for again chap. I've got to disagree over the efficiency of the sticks though. I've never owned my own set at home, but, as I may have mentioned once or twice on the Junkyard, I happened to be quite (ahem) good at Virtual On. I was able to beat the game on hardest in just over 3 minutes start to finish. We had an arcade cabinet at my local cinema, so I took great pride inpopping a pound coin in each time I visited and whipping through the game where nobody else could get past Vyperii (It's in my google name is how obsessed I was with Virtual On). I could never match the times I was setting at home though (I had to use a 35mm camera to take photos to send to games mags for rankings!). It seemed that nobody worldwide was managing this either. The key with the pads is to take advantage of the dash lock-on, the various variations of main attacks (especially as characters like vyper II whose alternate attacks are several times more efficient than standard attacks) and the jump cancel. You simply can't perform these moves quickly enough or with such precision using the sticks due to the extra amount of travel and the lack of the very precise d-pad. Once you have learned that you never need to rotate your virtuaroid as long as you are using the dash lock-on, your game will change entirely.
    Anyway though, awesome video brother. Can't wait for the next one. Any chance we're getting that DOA follow up?

    • @TheSouthernSegaGentleman
      @TheSouthernSegaGentleman  5 лет назад

      You did mention that on a previous post on my page I believe. I'm gonna have to take you up on some of that advice. I mean I have really, I MEAN REALLY, tried for years with the pad, but damn I can't do it. We'll see though.
      And Part two of the DOA retrospective is in the scripting process now. Probably 3 or 4 videos till it comes out. But this is an honest question. I can either pump them out as I get to them, or I could put all 4 unreleased parts (Ultimate 2 - DOA6) out consecutively once I finish them all. Thoughts?

      @@TheSouthernSegaGentleman I'd love to do a Virtual On with pad tutorial video but I just don't have the equipment (or time!) to do one justice!
      With regards to the video, I honestly prefer the slightly longer running videos, as you can just settle in and feel more immersed in the dialogue- this way, points you bring up about the games can be related from one to the next more easily. However, I'm no content creator and I'm not sure how that affects any views, rankings, youtube promotion or even monetisation of the videos, So I'm possibly not the perfect person to ask. RUclips ia a finicky creature, it really does want creators to post regularly and at least once a week, something I'm absolutely dreadful at honestly 🤣 I think the best way to keep the series going though would be to get all four videos done or at least somewhat complete before I start releasing them. They'll each be covering three games a piece minus 6. Yes I do consider all 3 separate releases of DOA5 as individual games, I'll be sure to explain that in the video of course.

    • @vyperii
      @vyperii 5 лет назад

      The Southern Sega Gentleman with that many parts, as opposed to just one, then for sure, spread them the way you think it will benefit the channel best.
      I genuinely didn't realise there was any difference between the versions of DOA5 outside the number of characters- are the story scenes different in any way? I've got Last Round only, as I've always tried to wait for 'final' or goty editions so that I am not encouraging micro transactions in games (which is pretty hard with DOA- although I've enjoyed 6 with just the game from the disc and no dlc so far). Now I'm really looking forward to the video to see what the differences are!

    Cool review. I've never been terribly impressed with the Saturn version of the stick. They did it right on the Dreamcast release. The build quality is much higher and more arcade like. It's hard to justify paying the going rates just for a single game, but I hope you can get your hands on one eventually. The difference in quality between the two sticks is night and day.
    I can't say I use the sticks for any other game but Virtual On.
    Hori did a version for the Xbox 360 called the Twin Stick EX. It went for a rather large sum at release. It has since become quite rare. I hear it's pretty awesome.

      I've yet to get my hands on the DC stick, but I'll more than likely just end up using the Saturn to DC adapter and use this one. I agree, the going rates for the DC Twinstick are way to high considering it's only supported by one game.

    my experience was almost word for woed identical to yours. You hit the nail on the head with how sonys genius dual shock controller design shaped the way that we aproach nearly every aspect of gaming today. The reason we dont have the huge range of weird and wonderful controllers of yore is that todays pads fill every niche. That said i still prefer FPS games with a mouse and keyboard :)

    I personally loved them in the Gundam games. Ironically enough, no controls make sense to me for Virtual On. I just can't control that game to the level my brain wants to and thinks it theoretically could. Granted, I never played the Gundam games with the Saturn pad, so maybe that's why I enjoyed it. For Gungriffon, I've always hated the series, so I just never bothered. That said, for all the smiles the twin sticks brought me while playing Gundam, both the two games and the sticks were far too shallow for me to ultimately care about in the long run, and they were sold after a few months of neglect. The Gundam games were fun, but I found the sorties to be really short. By the time the boss was done, while it was fun, I felt like I had been robbed of a more fleshed out experience. Truthfully, I've never wished to have them back. For all the space they take up, and for the setup they need (don't work well on a lap, they need a desk or table for better use), they're just not worth it for such a pathetic amount of support. When I saw the Dreamcast ones that have even less use, I literally laughed out loud and kept scrolling on my browser. Not getting roped into that again...

    I heard you talk about Albert Odyssey locking up in Shiro’s video on Grandia. I plan on getting a Repro from Etsy but now I’m unsure because what are the chances of receiving the version that locks up on you? An if not many people know about this the sellers most likely don’t either. So they’re probably selling copies that do that.

    • @TheSouthernSegaGentleman
      @TheSouthernSegaGentleman  5 лет назад +1

      The Gryzz only disc is the later revision of the game. Besides new disc art, there were a few tweaks made to the code that prevented the lockup. Honestly, the lock up is still pretty rare, and there's no guarantee it will happen everytime even on the same disc. The best way to mitigate the issue is to simply save often. The lock up normally happens near the last boss, so it's not like loosing 10 hrs of gameplay.
      As for how to ensure you get a repro of the later revision. I suppose just ask the seller where the image came from. Unless it's a backup of their own disc, they probably will have no way of guaranteeing which version it is.

      When entering Radoria’s Floating castle. Did you ever experience any soft locking at the beginning where you hit the buttons to open the very first door?
      There is a room with two buttons and each time i hit the left button it doesn’t shut off and as soon as i get into a battle. The game softlocks on the battle screen and i can’t do anything at all.

      @@ThatOldSchoolMagic I haven't personally, but that is one of many issues in the late game. This is exactly why there was a reprint made, I can think of at least 5 different known issues that can cause the game to be unbeatable. If you are playing a legit copy, and cant get past this point even after reloading, then I suggest playing a burned copy if you can. There are a few different dumps online, but I personally know that the dark water dump has never given me issues. (My first copy of the game would always lock up so I had to resort to playing a burn to beat the game.)
      Hope that helps in some way brother, and no worries, I'll try my best to stay active with y'all until the channel goes back live.

Since the it is so much quicker (and a lighter feeling) to jump cancel in order to have your opponent in sight, the twin sticks are not really usefull. Furthermore, to be really steady, the controller should be attached solidly to your table or else it will move and it's no good.
