Oh gosh that’s great! I just got my leg last Wednesday. I’m a 3 month BK amputee. I know it’s a long time…the wound haas cellulitis for 2 months + 2 revisions afterwards. I’m excited for this new step … no pun intended 😋
I am a new right leg above knee amputee and because of covid I'm fearful of going to physical therapy. This helped me figure out my walking with bending the knee!! Thank you so much for this amazingggg video and amazingggg channel.
@@AJ143. Unfortunately we do not. We do not provide treatment as our non-profit focuses on education and research. There are also a great deal of legal limitations to providing treatment in that manner.
I have been an amputee for almost 2 yrs now and I am still having a few problems but I want to thank u for ur video. It has helped me out big time. Relearning how to walk is a very slow progress. Do u make dvd videos that I might could get from u guys. By the way I live in northeast Louisiana and I became an amputee due to blood clots. I am 43 and it has definitely been a rough progress. I also fight with depression alot
We're certainly sorry to hear all that you are going through, but glad that our videos have been helpful for you. It is a very long and slow process, but it is worth it! Also, if you haven't already, check out the Amputee Coalition ( www.amputee-coalition.org ). They are an amazing resource for all sorts of things.
@@MissionGait I can't afford ur rates, I have no income I didn't get anything from the government on stimulus and I am still fighting for disability social security.
I lost the leg in May. I should have just been the foot but the podiatrist didn't think I should go to the hospital. So I will make a complaint about the doctor to the medical board. If I do well there then I will take him to court and sue him. The first time I visited him and he saw holes in my feet he should have said go to the hospital. Not go home and keep it clean and here's some stuff to do that. Keep off the foot. Haha. He also said don't drive with the boot and my job I lost was a job that required me to drive all day long. Now my life really sucks because I'm not a young kid and it's very hard to even try to get around.
Thank you. RAKA since May 2018. 1st prosthetic was received in December 2018. I'm on socket #4. #2-December 2019, #3-December 2020, and #4-July 2021(with a new ankle and foot because of a 60lb weight gain from first) after moving out of state and seeing a new prosthetist. But I m still not walking independently. No one has tried this with me. Just been told my gait is too big. I'm fine with a walker and OK with forearm canes.
Great question! It really depends on the person. The average step length is about 72 cm (~28 in), and this is a great goal for the tape placement. If a person is having significant difficulty, then the tape can be brought in closer.
It is such a difficult journey, especially as an above the knee amputee. We hope these videos are helpful for you and definitely be sure to connect with a physical therapist if you haven't already.
That is a very complex situation. Our best suggestion would be to consult with a physiotherapist in your area. They would be better equipped to assist you as that level of care requires direct contact with the individual. If you are unable, or if your local physiotherapist is not well trained in this particular area of practice, we have a playlist of prosthetic training videos that starts with exercises for those who have not walked for some time. Hope this helps. You can check these videos out here: ruclips.net/p/PLSF3akWhiajETHoRj1O7k6nHg8M7VanjQ
Does this-same exercise relate to me as a B.K. amputee? (As a Single-leg B.K.A.) How / if-differently can I gain a Stronger Toe-off with my amp.side foot when that-tibia has been broken 3 seperate times and is 3 inches shorter than "my good-leg"?
A couple of quick tips: 1. A local physical therapist is your best resource as they can individualize treatment and exercises for you and your condition. 2. You must regular inspect your “good side” as this is now a higher risk for further injury. Consult a local clinician to help with this process. 3. Balance will now be a challenge for both sides. You big toe plays a huge role in balance and stability so do not neglect to take care of that side. 4. Otherwise check out our videos on amputee training and keep working! Hope that helps.
As you are likely aware, this is significantly more difficult with a double or bilateral above knee amputee. The 123 Cockroach focuses on one side at a time with the first step addressing: how to bend the knee from a stopped position, accuracy in foot placement, and placing weight over the forward foot. The second step is about trusting your weight onto that side. The third is taking an entire step. With a bilateral amputee, you would start out with the first step the same exact way shown here. This allows you to initiate walking, and should be practiced on both sides. The difficulty starts with the next step. Let's say you took the first step on the right. As you are practicing the 2nd step, the right side has to accept the weight while the left side is having to take a full step (Which is the 3rd step of the 123 Cockroach). This is then alternated as you progress along, focusing on committing weight to one side while practicing the full step on the other. It is tough because you cannot truly isolate one side versus the other.

Does this advice work with any above knee prosthetic? Or does the model affect which exercise? I'm currently post-surgery waiting to be ready for my first prosthetic. My PT team will surely train me, but I'm anxious to jump start my learning.
Yes it does! This is a great exercise to learn how the prosthetic knee operates during the walking cycle. Your PT can certainly help in performing this exercise as each prosthetic knee has different characteristics. This patient has a very good foot, and l think she also has a microprocessor knee. I did not receive this, when l left hospital, l also never received any advice on what footwear to wear either. I chose a flexible flat shoe, which allowed my toes to spread wide on impact, this infact was incorrect, as it had a negative setting on my prosthesis, making through steps more difficult than they could be. After a 9 months on crutches l went to a different clinic. I have a ' game changer' American glass fibre foot, fixed to a silicone sleeve, with my original Ossur knee, plus the option to calibrate any shoe l wear. My takeaway experience, is listen to the experts......Then, ask every single question you may have, spend all your appointment time, getting them to answer every question you have. You can practice walking later, at home. Research on here, get educated, as virtually no one knows how to deal with your condition.....You are still an individual, even though you have moved to an exclusive group in society. You get back to being in inclusive society by practice and the correct prosthesis for you, that is where all this walking should lead to.
A lot of good thoughts. We always encourage people to ask questions and get answers, and to get training in walking! Sorry it was such a long journey for you but it sounds like you are doing well.

PT comes every few days works me for 15 minutes and leaves. they don't even work me very hard. but they charge me like they do.
