    Nice! -- I just got off the waitlist and am going to play around with it a bit.
    I think an inexpensive Chromebook might be an even better option than the iPad since then things like the `esc` key issue you ran into wouldn't be a problem!

    • @FedericoTerzi

      The biggest problem with inexpensive Chromebooks for me has always been that they just look and feel like inexpensive PCs - Easier to just carry around a sleek ultrabook and have a nice typing experience for anything serious, but a Chromebook could be good for playing around or for those who develop 90% at a desk and don't already have a laptop.
      Having said that the idea of a remote development environment / workspace is something I'm interested in and have considered in the past whether I could actually get away with doing 99% of my real work on a remote machine, whatever that may be.
      Still really like the idea (one day) of a Samsung DeX / W10M Continuum experience with some real high quality lapdock accessories - The thought of having just 1 device that can morph to do everything I need (even if some of that is offloaded to the cloud) is amazing and codespaces bring us one step closer.

    I tried to use code-server recently with my iPad 2018 which was working just fine with around 40 extensions installed.
    I put everything into a PWA so that I was able to run the site in full screen, too me it works good enough that I can leave my laptop at home when I’m going on a weekend trip.

    I'm on the waitlist, in the meantime I signed up for Gitpod like you suggested which so far is pretty amazing! My question is, how do you then debug your web app on the ipad? I need the web inspector I typically use in chrome to modify elements to figure out my exact styling and be able to edit the styling, viewing JS errors, and seeing the network traffic requests and responses.

    • @FedericoTerzi
      @FedericoTerzi  3 года назад

      I suspect the inspector is not available on the iPad itself :( This might be more suited for backend work, but I might be wrong!

      You can download „Inspect Browser“ from the App Store. It‘s not as good as the chrome devtools, but it does the job.

    I‘m running on an iPad pro 2020 with the Magic Keyboard and honestly, my experience is pretty, pretty bad. Many „CMD + * combinations don‘t work and scrolling is absolutely horrific. There is a ton of issues currently open at the code-server repo regarding iPad controls and atm. I‘d say you can‘t seriously use it for anything but simple text changes. I started using the iSH app to have a linux console to SSH into my servers running nvim - works a gazillion times better than any code-server solution.

    • @FedericoTerzi
      @FedericoTerzi  3 года назад

      Yeah, I had the same experience. It "technically" works, but it's not a pleasant experience, especially after getting used to an ordinary laptop

    will you be able to design a webpage with it. For designing a webpage we need to use chrome developer tools and is that possible on it when coding on Ipad or at least will we be able to use edge developer tools extension.

    Ho comprato l'iPad 6 praticamente all'uscita solo per la penna.
    Avevo cercato tempo fa un modo per scrivere e testare 2 righe di codice ogni tanto in mobilità ma era talmente macchinoso che ho lasciato perdere immediatamente. Questa potrebbe essere una buona alternativa.
    l'iPad è uno strumento per lo studio perfetto ma per scrivere codice è alquanto terribile e iOS non facilita per niente le cose (ed io purtroppo non ne sono per niente fan). Vorrei tanto provare un Chromebook duet con una penna per vedere se è in grado di sostituire l'iPad perché voglio fuggire da iOS. Fortunatamente adesso supporta pienamente Linux ed ha tutte le app android, potrebbe essere una buona alternativa
    Bel video comunque complimenti!

      Some of us like me are Apple lovers and will not use any products other than Apple. So something like an Ipad is appealing in that sense. I have tons of macbook pro's, imac's etc that are plenty powerful enough but they are also big and heavy and not super portable, like my 16" macbook pro. Looking for an option like the ipad pro that is super lightweight and portable. The Ipad pro 13 inch is half the weight of the macbook air 13" even.

    Nice video! Small question; can you install the remote - ssh extensions and then connect to cluster/server from Github Codespaces?
    I would be supper handy to use vscode on iPad to access large computer remotely.

    • @FedericoTerzi
      @FedericoTerzi  3 года назад

      If you control the large computer yourself, then you don't need Github Codespaces anymore and use code-server instead: github.com/cdr/code-server :)

    • @MrTrol0l
      @MrTrol0l 3 года назад

      @@FedericoTerzi Thanks a lot for your answer! No, I do not control the large computer (by large computers I mean "very large" computers such as OLCF-3 for instance), I am not one of the administrators. I tried code-server on my own server and it works fine but I cannot install the remote - ssh extension to access other computers from it; the package is not in the list of available packages.
      I assume that the list of installable packages of code-sever and Github Codespaces are the same.
