LOL. Your reaction at being surprised by an enemy made *me* almost jump out of my skin. Second-hand scariness I guess. Also, that ion pulse rifle might just be the best weapon in the game - if you carry enough batteries and don't waste shots attacking stone heads :D. And I expected you to find an inventory upgrade in the storage level. So far no luck, but this level is ultra-confusing. How does anyone ever find stuff in this "storage" area. Isn't the idea to make things easy to find?
lol sorry about that :p I do like the ion rifle quite a lot! Very cool weapon and satisfying to use, probably my favourite one. And I agree! Storage should be a place where things are properly stored and easy to find, not this mess :p

Regarding hitting anything, the crossire actually tells you. It slightly expands, when it confirms a hit.
