As a Norwegian....BBC which used to be the international gold standard of journalism....has turned into an offense to anyone trying to do real journalism. It's an offensive joke of a "news" channel. Poor brits have to subsidize the joke.
This interviewer is completely second-rate and frankly a bit thick. It's disrespectful to employ such a mediocrity to interview a mind as sharp as Anne Widdecombe's. Clearer evidence of the BBC's bias - as well as disdain for those who fund their salaries - we could not wish for.

Look, I'm remain, but the BBC interviewer is trying to create a straw man. She should ask her if all forms of rebellion are signs of oppression, and for examples of oppression from the EU, this would have led to a more productive discussion and I would have learned something from this as a viewer. Frankly, the BBC interviewer failed as a journalist as she's not extracting information for the viewer; instead she's trying to score points over a controversial parliamentarian.
yes.. bbc used to be cutting edge and real - now throwing around fashionable but in this case meaningless words like "white privilege" .. "white privilege" does have real relevance to too many situations but feck all to do with how this usually deranged lady is making her reasonably coherent argument here..

@@SSJfraz To be fair the interviewer didn't acquit herself particularly well in the face of three obvious facts: 1. We asked to join the EU (both the EEC and the EU) 2. We signed a treaty to join the EU (technically to form it, but that's semantics) 3. The EU is not blocking us from leaving - they've been accommodating wherever they could be and facilitated Theresa May's red lines (not theirs), but they are obligated to look after their members (just like they still do for us when facing other countries). Our own parliament has refused to accept the only possible deal (given the red lines that WE put in place) on the grounds that it's not as good as membership. Well of course it bloody isn't you fuckwits, you're just too cowardly to admit in front of the baying crowd of pillocks that elect you that there is no form of leaving that is better than staying.

Liam Bowbrick the outrage on behalf of others is annoying. I see white people calling other white people racist on behalf of a Black people when no Black people are complaining. My son is training to be a doctor. I'm not sure why you are referring to my family members. Black people aren't 'an expense' they are just people with a different skin colour to you. I don't understand how you can be so brazenly racist and think that is ok. I look around my neighbourhood and the biggest benefit scroungers are white families with more kids than they can afford yet I would never think of them as an 'unwanted expense'. They are people who have fallen on hard times, this can happen to anyone, regardless of skin colour. You really do have a disgustingly bigoted point of view. Shame on you.
@Diana Mitford Mauritius is doing very well thank you. But I do not consider it my home, I have always lived here and I have always identified as being British. What does that have to do with anything? You need to take a look in the mirror and realise that you are a racist, you are not better/worse than someone because of skin colour!
@Diana Mitford Is that another racist slur? I hope you never have to go through what my family does. Things seemed fine 5 years ago, we got a bit of abuse every now and again but only from racist idiots. Now a day doesn't go by where we aren't treated like second class citizens. I want to move away but my sons studies will be a waste if we do. All he ever wanted was to help sick people yet he fears going outside because people insult him based on the colour of his skin. @Gaius Agricola I really don't get how it suddenly became about race. Marx used the comparison between the slaves peasants and workers too. The Europeans, over the last 2000 years, have been slaves, then slavelike peasentry, then factory workers and still today many white Europeans have no choice but to work in shitty conditions. I mean I get that black slaves had to suffer, but so did the Germanic slaves in Rome, Greece and later Slavic and Germanic slaves in the Ottoman empire. It shouldn't be about which race suffered the most, but about the conflict of class. Racism is a separate issue, which definitely exists, but shouldn't always be brought up if you lose an argument.

I agree with Ann Widdecombe, she made many other references such as european history, colonialism, peasantry - the feudal system historically speaking... #Brexit #Blexit
Dear blackbritgayl. As you used the word "European" you surely (or are you not European) really do not exclude Britain: Super Colonial power, nearly annihalated the Maoris, the Aborigines. Slave triangle (ever heard of it?) Making Jamaica a slave Prison, separating families. Feudal - of Course, you mean the Lords in your Country, fox Hunting, a Royal Family that is not able to unite the Country but take millions. The UK is strong in other areas. But colonism is a rather irrelevant example though, of course, the attitude towards the Third World was quite a different one in the past.
Her analogies are flawed. The difference is that all EU members have the same rights and duties, whereas in 1. colony - empire relationship the empire is privileged over the colonies 2. peasant-feudal lord relationship the feudal lord is privileged over the peasant 3. slave - slave master relationship the slave master is privileged over the slaves The UK can't control its borders in the sense that all EU citizens have the right to work in the UK, but that's not "oppression" that's a mutual right. All other EU member countries also have to let all EU citizens work in their country, including UK citizens of which there are 2 million who live and work in other countries. The UK must adhere to the EU directives, but so must all other EU member countries and they themselves have made and agreed to the EU directives in the EU council, where each member country including the UK has a representative and veto power. The European Union IS the Union of its member countries. All EU representatives are elected by their member countries. It's not some feudal lord above the member countries. It consists of the member countries themselves. Show me a union of countries that's fairer or more democratic than the EU. There is none. The british empire certainly wasn't democratic. It had no council were each colony was equally represented. The colonies had to obey the orders of the UK. That's different in the EU, where all members are equal and furthermore all members joined by themselves whereas in the UK empire the colonies were conquered violently in war. It is a privilege and benefit to be an EU member. That's why many other countries like Macedonia, Albania and Croatia want to join the EU, too.

What else is an interviewer supposed to do except 'quibble' over the words that other prominent and influential figures are using? Perhaps you would be happier if they had a conversation about Ann's clothes? Look up the word demagogue, demagogues need to be challenged on the words that they are using, no matter what their stripes are. The demagogue is completely dependent on false equivalence, for example - the comparison of the EU to that of other nations being taken over by an empire, or slaves being owned and oppressed. It is a false comparison, one that is designed to rile up their voter base, that is it. Institutional global child rape, forced conversions, mass imprisonments, mass murder, forbidding condoms in Africa and allowing AIDS to spread, denying raped 13 yo girls abortions, telling any non-believer that they'll spend their eternities in Hell. This very persistent interviewer needs to look up the meaning of the word oppression. It doesn't just correspond one to one with slavery or the type of treatment slaves received. And it is definitely not loaded in the way that she suggests. It is a much more general word. Ask Noam Chomsky who is a frequent user of the word in many contexts. It's pretty much as general and as broad as the word freedom. In actuality, oppression is one of the quintessential characteristics of present-day human society. It is the basis for capitalism and even more so neoliberal capitalism - although I note that neither Ann Widdecombe nor the interviewer, always acting on behalf of concentrated power and big money interests, dare not stray onto that topic.
The difference is that all EU members have the same rights and duties, whereas in
1. colony - empire relationship the empire is privileged over the colonies
2. peasant-feudal lord relationship the feudal lord is privileged over the peasant
3. slave - slave master relationship the slave master is privileged over the slaves
The UK can't control its borders in the sense that all EU citizens have the right to work in the UK, but that's not "oppression" that's a mutual right.

Only the BBC can make me take Ann Widecombe’s side...
Hahaha.. The BBC can bring out your feeling of being enslaved?

Don't lie, you was already on her far right side.
Oppressed. The point was oppressed. If y'all were free, your vote would have actually lead to Brexit

This is the final straw for me, I'm not renewing my TV license. I've had enough. To think my money is funding BBC salaries is tolerable no longer.
Good riddance.
If it has taken this long to make a decision regarding you renewing your TV Tax, then you must have been under a rock for countless Years.
Good Lord! What iniquities British people have to endure...and they have to even pay money for them...
Especially paying a salary to a non-presenter like this one. I don’t know where she studied journalism but I think she should ask for her money back!
@leicanoct yes, basically if one watches a live broadcast, whether online, on TV, a mobile phone etc, one needs a TV licence. So if anyone cancels their TV licence, they also have to give up all live broadcasting. A bit impractical.
Poor attempt by the BBC. Ann Widdecombe brushed this aside like it was nothing. Simply going down the route of throwing out phrases such as "white privilege" to try and make her feel like she needed to back track or risk looking to be politically incorrect, failed miserably.
How embarrassing for the BBC this interview was! The overall impression was that of an adult trying to explain some basic communication issues to an obstinate child. How does it feel BBC to project such an infantile public image? I hope this video goes viral to highlight BBC's transparent partisanship. Have a good look Britons at the sad state of your institutions and clean house for the sake of your children.
If the BBC want people to renew their TV licence they should stop being so bigoted and adopt a more neutral attitude with their interviews instead of stretching out air time by keep repeating the same question and getting the same answer.
Unfortunately, this is the corporate Brainwashing which occurs, when you allow the TORIES to infiltrate and take charge of the Countries entire medium of Communication :-(

@Wanderer1955. For your information, Ann Widdecombe is a staunch Catholic. The Catholic Church has oppressed and enslaved the poor for about two-thousand years. Institutional global child rape, forced conversions, mass imprisonments, mass murder, forbidding condoms in Africa and allowing AIDS to spread, denying raped 13 yo girls abortions, telling any non-believer that they'll spend their eternities in Hell. And just to top that lot, Widdecombe goes around preaching to people about sex and personal morals. A 71 yo prune-faced virgin is obviously highly qualified, eh? If you can give me any examples where the EU compares to the Catholic Church when it comes to slavery and ordering people what to do, then be my guest.
One other thing: Britain was free to join the EU, and it's now free to leave. How exactly does that fit in with your blind, sycophantic belief that we're slaves?
It's very sad to see how low the bbc has sunk.
It's funny also how the ownership of words such as slavery and oppression has passed beyond the use of most people in the west (particularly the UK) into the hands of a particular group who are by no means innocent historically in these same regards. I'm glad for people like Ann Widdecombe.

"Beatrice's mood had initially been alarm and a sense of oppression"
This host is really picking the wrong battle here. I’m no fan of Anne’s bleating, but the host is DELIBERATELY missing the point based on specific parsing of words. This is really painful, and stops us having real, genuine discussions.
What stops people having real discussions is the mindless hyperbole from people like ann widdecombe. The EU is a trading block made up of sovereign nations. Any country can leave. The UK voted to leave. When Ireland voted to leave the UK, the UK sent over troops and burned down the centre of Cork and machine gunned a football stadium full of people. When the peasants in the UK revolted against their masters they were put down. Slaves never had the option of voting to stop being slaves.
Considering the tens if not hundreds of millions of people that were killed or enslaved by the british over the centuries a comparison between colonisation & slavery and the EU is just sickening.

By saying that you're saying it's not like that right now. The EU is a treaty organisation that gives any member the right to opt out. And the UK submitted article 50. And the only reason they haven't left is because they keep asking for extensions. It's nothing compared to slavery or feudalism. It's not colonialism. Look at the history of colonialism. Look at the tens if not hundreds of millions who were killed and enslaved by the british empire. tell me how that compares to being in a free trade organisation with freedom of movement that you can leave at any time.
