    It's kind funny before this series of videos Vicki was almost always serious on camera. Now several times she's shown herself happy or excited and when that happens she lights up the screen amazingly.

    These videos are annoyingly watchable :) I have no idea why as I had not even considered I like trains. Great knowledge from the dynamic duo. Vicki is just a joy to watch with her quirky likeable style. She has a gift of always just saying the right thing which I guess is why so many people they meet warm to her instantly. She is also pretty good and keeping Geoff light when he gets a little too geeky. They make a great double act.

      @ianmcclavin 7 лет назад +5

      Wang Yulun Yes the Tesco incident did happen, 7:30pm on 30th June 2005. The plan was to "reclaim" the land by building a tunnel over the cutting, and then building the Tesco store on top. At the time mentioned, the partially completed tunnel collapsed, just as a train was leaving Gerard's Cross station. Fortunately the driver saw what was going on and stopped the train short of the tunnel, so there were no injuries. The line stayed closed for several weeks after this however, and the project was eventually completed, much later than planned, and significantly over-budget!!

    combe is least used station in Oxfordshire. I live in Oxfordshire which is why I was really excited to see the title xD

    • @Nayson
      @Nayson 7 лет назад +1

      Kings Sutton is in Northamptonshire. It's definitely a least used station. I'm guessing Geoff's tentativeness about this is that Kings Sutton is completely surrounded by Oxon, the station immediately to the north (Banbury) is in Oxfordshire, and the two stations immediately to the south on either branch of the line beyond Aynho junction (Heyford on the Oxford branch and Bicester North on the Bicester branch) are also in Oxfordshire. Weirdly, the junction at Aynho is in Northants too but there is no station there.

    Oxford! Great city where I spend every work day slaving away. :P
    Edit: Vicky says "This is Cromwell right?" looking at that statue at the Bodleian; that's actually William Herbert, founder of Pembroke College and Chancellor of the University. Highly recommend coming back and checking out Oxford's fantastic museums; the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology and the University Museum of Natural History (+ Pitt Rivers Museum).

    • @gobears6487
      @gobears6487 7 лет назад +3

      gbrading Yes it is the Earl of Pembroke and the guide was well aware, but the editors somehow weren't (the yes was in answer to something else)... 😎

    • @dukenukem5768
      @dukenukem5768 5 лет назад +1

      @7:52 - Could not possibly be Oliver Cromwell because the guy in the statue has far too much bling. In any case, Cromwell was associated with Cambridge (he went to Sidney Sussex College, and lived just up the road), not Oxford, which was the Royalist HQ during the civil war.

    • @gobears6487
      @gobears6487 4 года назад +1

      Hey @Duke Nukem... well actually you're not quite right there. Ok so I was the guide and of course I said it was the Earl of Pembroke etc (edit fail) HOWEVER despite Cromwell being a Cambridge man, I suspect you are not aware that he appears on the very exclusive "Benefactor's Board" in the Bodleian. If you ever go to Duke Humfrey's you can see it on the way in. Cromwell made a generous gift to the library WHILE HE WAS CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD :-)

    3:28 - The tunnel had been installed as an extended archway of two sides locked together.
    Engineers had made a mistake with regard to taking into account soil shift of the installed arch.
    When they began to fill over the completed archway tunnel, the weight of the soil above put enough pressure on the ground below the tunnel walls and the tunnel arches gave way.
    A train was waiting at Gerrard's Cross station ready to go.. if the train had departed slightly earlier there would have been a major incident.
    This happened well before Tesco was installed on top. And yes, it caused massive disruption.
    BTW, yes, Chiltern is the very best rail company I have EVER used in this country and their trains are nearly always on time, clean and with WiFi and mains ready. Try the Silverline Intercity Service.. it's awesome!
    A real shame it will not get to be electrified, even in my lifetime.
    Chiltern Railways FTW!!

    Yeah there was a lot of confusion on the trains on Tuesday, Arriva weren't running services to Birmingham in the afternoon, and there were a lot of delays and terminating services early. They said it was due to an incident currently being invesitaged by the emergeny services, and that they didn't know what was going on. Strange.

  • @matthewlewis2072

    Yes, it's true about the tunnel and Tesco at Gerrard's Cross. I was commuting regularly from Aylesbury to London, and the passengers from the other line (which was closed) had to use our line.
    Credit to the staff and authorities, they managed very well given the chaos it caused.
    I didn't actually realise until now that they did finish the Tesco!!!

    Oh the memories! If you did Marylebone to Aylesbury via Harrow then you've been on a part of the line I've travelled on for hundreds of times (I used to live in London for 2 years)! (I often took the Met but Chiltern was brilliant when the Tube had works done in the part of the line running parallel to the Met line bit - they did extra frequent replacement services, probably 3 or 4 per hour.)
    Also I hope no-one got lost at "Boarding Area A" as it did occasionally get my wife confused...
    PS: My end it is / was ALWAYS "just" Tesco but oh well each to their own!

    I've only been badly delayed by Chiltern about twice in the last 10 years - which is pretty good! I travel a lot to London using either LM or Chiltern and for me it's a case of 'LM will get you there but (more importantly) Chiltern will always get you home'.
    Being stranded at New St. at midnight with 4 miles to walk, doesn't give me much faith in LM(!)

    It’s entirely possible that those men communicated by light, it’s called semaphore, similar name to the train signalling system. You may have seen it on movies like red October, where the USS Dallas communicates by morse code with Red October. It was also used, somewhat famously, in the battle of Saragara, where the Sikh Fort communicated with British forces , informing them of their dire circumstances.

    ohh don't mention Tesco in GX (as the locals call it) the locals opposed the building from the start...apparently it wasn't posh enough...waitrose would've been far more to their liking 😊

    Tesco purchased the air rights above the rail line, built a tunnel for the trains, then infilled to build their supermarket. The tunnel collapsed with the weight, line blocked for a considerable length of time, a local should be able to say how long line closed. News item on both London local news programmes.

    LOL when I lived in Northern California there was a supermarket chain called "Lucky" and 99% of the population referred to it as "Lucky's," which absolutely enraged the 1% of pedants who would loudly insist that "THERE IS NO S!!"

      @@DJ-Sellout Oh nice, I moved away decades ago and when I went back my local one had closed, so I just assumed the chain had gone out of business.

    Rickmansworth is not odd it just has a dual-personality.
    Whilst it is on the National Rail network, it is run by TfL, so if there's a tube strike and it involves the station staff, then it closes 😔

    0:05 It’s somewhat comforting to know that, even though as a Canadian I’ll never pronounce Marylebone properly, Londoners can’t either... 😜🇨🇦❤️🇬🇧
    It’s the one name my Dad found the most funny.

    • @RoyCousins
      @RoyCousins 4 года назад

      Nobody who lives and works in Marylebone originally comes from the area, since it was gentrified in the 1990s. So the new "locals" now try to pronounce it as it's written. My family, who lived there for 200 years, called it "Marrabn" (and it's actually St Marylebone).

    • @mr51406
      @mr51406 4 года назад

      @Roy Cousins: Thanks for the interesting information! I shall then pronounce it as you do.
      And it’s so fascinating to connect with someone with deep London roots. Cheers! 😊

    Only just realised that my parents (and also myself) say "...going to Tescos", and that this is incorrect. The things you learn watching these videos!

    • @cephalopod7300
      @cephalopod7300 2 года назад

      It's not incorrect from the point of view of descriptive linguistics. It's something a large proportion of native speakers say consistently, and it can be analysed as meaning "the shop belonging to Tesco".
