    I saw Live Aid live on tv in 1985. Was about to go to bed. Then Queen came on. What a worthwhile experience to stay up for. What is also amazing is there was no special effects, bells or whistles needed to show what an awesome band Queen is. Love this still to this day. Freddie Mercury was such an awesome talented person. The rest of the band were awesome to.

      Live Aid was grossly underperforming in donations...until Queen hit the stage. During Queen's set the donations started flooding in to the point they passed their goal by the end of the set.

    • @pablohanc
      @pablohanc 2 года назад +2

      @@gfear24 that's not true mate. It was portrayed in the queen distortion film bohemian rhapsody that the donations started to go up a lot during queens set, but that was one of the films many innaccuracies. The donations didnt start to go up significantly until AFTER bob geldof gave his sweary appeal, and that was after queen had been on.
      It also makes zero sense for donations to go up during a set..... that's when people are watching, not dialling. Also, we are talking manually operated phone lines, taking details over the phone. It isn't like today where you could donate with a text or on the internet.

    • @halloweenjack95
      @halloweenjack95 2 года назад

      @@gfear24 not true at all. That was one of the many myths the Queen Movie tried to sell.
      In fact Bob Geldof himself said it was going well. But Bowies Speech with the Footage of the starving children was the reason it truly became a success.. not Queen.

    Heres the thing, of course Queen at live aid is going to be #1, there is no other performance in the world that beats that. While the music is of course top tier, it is impossible to describe the impact of that performance. Even today 37 years later, the look is iconic, the music is iconic, the location is iconic, but the last straw here is the "Eh Oh". It has become so impactful that anytime any artist performs as Wembley or anywhere around the world, the chance for them to recreate that iconic moment is extremely high. It builds such a great energy and gets the entire audience involved. Artists from BTS to Green Day still to this day do it as an ode to this performance that changed the course of live music. Thank you Freddie Mercury.

    Freddie was having problems with his vocal chords going into Live Aid. The crowd was not a typical "Queen" crowd. The crowd became a typical Queen crowd rather quickly. The Live Aid set caused record shops to become flooded with shoppers looking for any, and all Queen albums. There's a reason why they were the band who first figured out how to come out of stadium shows making a profit. They were one of the only acts on that day who had prior experience playing to massive crowds. Then they manipulated the sound board (that was one of the few factually correct things in 'Bohemian Rhapsody') so they would be louder than everyone else. And the rest is history.

While most of the acts put on a decent show there were some you could tell they were just going through the motions. Either for the money, or contractual obligations. Then there were some truly great shows that didn't fail to disappoint.
    Queen never failed, regardless of venue. Live Aid was phenomenal but just a condensed version of what they could do. ELO did the World Series of Rock with a hell of a stage presence. I missed that one, but when I did see them in the early 80's, despite no orchestra, did a fine good job. Lastly, Kiss. This was a live you did not want to miss. Make up/ no make up. Absolutely pure rock and roll night and party every day. Their concert under the bridge was a classic.

    Rammstein live at Nimes
    Green Day at MK (Bullet in a Bible)
    Beastie Boys live at Glasgow 1999
    Rhcp live at Slane Castle and change that Radiohead gig with the one in Paris 2001 where they played only songs from Kid A and Amnesiac..

Your list did NOT include ANY of Bob Marley’s MAGICAL performances. There’s a few to choose from. The One Love Peace Concert, The Lyceum in London in ‘75, The Rainbow in London in ‘77 or my choice would be the Zimbabwe Independence Festival in 1980 that marked the end of British colonization in Africa. Good list otherwise.

    One other great live performance not mentioned was mentioned on Ken Burns Jazz documentary series was the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival with Duke Ellington's Jazz Orchestra and the Tenor Saxophonist Paul Gonsalves playing an amazing 27 chorus solo on "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" which made the audience get up and dance around rather than walk away and saved Duke Ellington's career.

If Eurovision is eligible, then yes, absolutely should be some entries from there. Abba would be a really obvious one! Great list. Here's a few that I would include:
    Nine Inch Nails--Woodstock 1994: Although not a technical masterpiece, these guys gave one hell of an intense performance, beginning with them emerging onto the stage caked in mud and concluding with the classic Head Like a Hole. I'd say this was one of the moments in the mid 1990's that helped to make this band.
    AC/DC--Donnington 1991: Just a great performance from one of the best hard rock bands of all time.
    Garth Brooks--Live in Central Park 1998: One of the high points of Garth's career, with a lot of standout moments, including teaming up with Billy Joel for New York State of Mind and You May be Right.
    Pink Floyd--Knebworth 1990: Though brief (under an hour), this was a truly amazing set, perhaps one of the best Post-Waters shows, made even more amazing because the second half was in the pouring rain.

      the viewing audience for liveaid dwarfed that though. Liveaid being probably the first concert that could truly be described as "global" Phil Collins even flew half way around the world, between the 2 concert venues to perform at both during the same event!
      Metallica should have been second place, but I don't think they top liveaid when looking at the tv audience for that one & how many countries broadcast the whole thing live
