    I guess we can forgive some elements of Elvan forging as magically inclined. Celebrimbor was not Calaquendi but he was a Noldorian Elf and related to Fëanor, the greatest smith who existed on Arda/Middle Earth. What I struggle for forgive is how Celebrimbor did not know about the concept of a metal alloy and needed the idea explained to him lol.

    • @chickenmonger123
      @chickenmonger123 Год назад +9

      The bloodlines of Calquendi, specifically the Royalty tend to be quite strong. Celebrimbor got that in spades. Direct descendant of Feanor. Who was the rightful High King after Fingolfin ceded it after his Feanors Exile. Until it was renounced by his last son, to Fingolfins line once again.
      Anyway. My point is mostly the distinction is relevant, but does not make Celebrimbor necessarily less potent per se, considering his bloodline.
      You are right though. What he got in actuality was not knowledge of alloying. It was a rarely used term, called “The Ring Lore”. Which was a technique found in the power and craft of Sauron. It did not as a concept exist without the virtue of that Maia, whose origin was found in Eru Iluvatar. It’s why even the three Elven Rings were destroyed with the One Ring. All the Rings made with Sauron contained a portion of his Corrupt Ambition. The One Ring contained most of his Power and Essence. The Elven Rings did not contain his Corruption. However all Rings made in this Ring Lore were connected to the being who brought it about. So when the being of it’s inceptions Power was destroyed, so went all the Power of the Rings one and all.
      This higher connection is necessary to understand why the Rings could be made. How they were bound. The corruption inherent to all but three. Then also why the One Rings destruction was both inherently corrupting, and necessary to be destroyed. Then why they all went when it was gone. Also why Saurons evil continued to coalesce as long as the One Ring, which contained most of his Power continued to exist. After which he was a bad smell in the air, and nothing more.

    • @ShelvedGamer
      @ShelvedGamer Год назад +7

      @@chickenmonger123 Yes you're exactly right. Saruman even dabbled in Ring Lore during the war of the ring (though to what extent he is successful we do not know to my own knowledge.) You're also right about how Celebrimbor's lineage is very important to his capabilities. Though safe to say his ring making is of lower level than that of the creation of the Silmarils. I have no idea if having actually witnessed the light of the two trees can influence their Elvan craftmanship. Though Fëanor is a special case independent of the trees due to the nature of his birth. Their workmanship though probably has more to do with the connection to Aule and Fëanor.

      I too had difficulty with Celebrimbor essentially saying "Alloys? What are these alloys you speak of?" If they wanted to make it so that alloying Mithril had been simply incomprehensible to the Mírdain, they needed to lay more groundwork as to why.
      Re: Celebrimbor: The writings would permit (but, yes, not require) him to be Calaquendi. Fëanor is much older than his brothers. We don't have birth years in the writings for the 7 sons of Fëanor or for Celebrimbor. But given Fëanor's age and early marriage, all 7 of his sons might even have been born before Finrod's/Galadriel's dad Finarfin. There's a few thousands years in there to play with, so it's possible Curufin sired Celebrimbor in Aman. (But, again, yes the writings would permit Celebrimbor to be born in Beleriand. It's just there's nothing about Curufin's unnamed wife even leaving Aman with Curufin (she might have refused just like Curufin's mom did), and Tolkien wrote that he disliked the idea of the Noldor having kids in Beleriand during war/siege with Morgoth.)

    • @ShelvedGamer
      @ShelvedGamer Год назад +7

      @@Patrick-qed Scratch what I said. A little research finds that Celebrimbor was indeed born on Aman during the Years of the Trees. One does forget just how old Fëanor was, and despite Curufin being the last child, he's still plenty old before the Kinslaying.
      As for the alloys...I mean I'm semi prepared to accept that Elves work with such high quality metals that are infused with magic that the branch of metallurgy that facilitated the discovery of metal alloys was redundant to Elves. But then they make such a big deal out of the dagger being a rare source of 100% pure silver and gold that would have only been possible on Valinor that eh...Pushing the limits of my suspension of disbelief.

    The can looks like a drip torch. We used it to set the forest on fire when I was a Wildland firefighter. It's filled with a mixture of unleaded gas and diesel. One makes it set on fire faster, the other makes it burn longer. You dig a fire line, then drip fire onto the forest floor and burn back the forest to meet the rest of the fire.

    They also needed "Gold and silver of the highest purity" but they didn't bother to skim the dross off the top of their melty dagger soup before pouring it into their alloying crucible. My biggest issue with the rings is that they created them before the 16 lesser rings, which makes no sense. Sauron, in the guise of an Elf of extraordinary beauty named Annatar, taught Celebrimbor to make the rings, and the 16 lesser rings given to Men and Dwarves were "essays in the craft". Sauron then split, and Celebrimbor created the 3 Elven rings. They didn't know Annatar was Sauron, though there were suspicions. He didn't know they created the 3 rings until he put on the One, and his plan was then laid bare to the bearers of the 3. While he had no hand in crafting them, they did use his techniques, so they were tied to the fate of the One.
    They couldn't use the name Annatar or have him be an Elf, because that's only in the Silmarillion, which they do not have the rights to use. So I can forgive the showrunners for having him be in the guise of a Man. But they really should have done the lesser rings first.

    Question time!
    1. If they needed silver, and they're nobles, why do they need to use her knife?
    2. If the crucible they pour the silver into is hot enough to mix metals then why use the forge? Why not just throw the knife in the crucible?
    3. Why are they making mythril at a time when it should've already been in existence?
    4. Why does a master smith like Celebrimbor not already know about alloys, a basic of forging?

    Japanese Katanas are covered in clay and dipped in while it's red hot so the edge of the blade cools faster than the spine producing curves while reinforcing the blade. The More You Know. It's quite common to quench a red-hot katana. That's how they're supposed to be made actually. When making curved or patterned blades you normally use this method of heat treating.

    I don't think the silver blade is that much of a problem. In the backstory, the smiths of the Noldor (the group of elves that Galadriel and Elrond are part of) were trained by Aule, the Valar of crafts, and it's reasonable to say that dagger was made by Feanor himself (Galadriel's half-uncle, Celebrimbor's grandfather), the greatest of elven smiths to ever live, so I think he would be able to make a magic blade out of silver.

  • @danielyork3406

    Should probably watch the episode where they are melting the dagger and creating the rings. The reason for using the spinny pot was to gently alloy the mythril with the other material. The original method of attempting to alloy the metal didn’t work (through pressure) and it exploded the chamber. While this may may. This may or may not have much basis in reality, that was the explanation given in the show.

    Pharaoh Tutankahmun had a ceremonial still razor sharp golden dagger in his tomb. It's a thing Alec and pure gold blade and all I'm guessing that was used as reference material here. It looks like they were making an electrum alloy of silver and gold or doing the silver in a seperate melt. Spinning the crucible might be explained by having implements imbeded in the bottom of the crucible for mixing instead of seperating much like modern sauces like ketchup are made. Anyways the vice was a stretch along with the red hot quenching as usual.

    I mean that's cool and all but I know I'm not the only one craving to see you make something super sleek, super sexy, over the top, and a truly custom Alec Steele 1 of 1 masterpieces. Even if its something as simple as a badass full size axe. I'm thinking something maybe similar to a Helko Werk splitting maul could be a very nice start..but with an Alec Steele twist applied. Thise axes are simple looking yet also so beautiful and they perform absolutely as well as they look. Obviously has to be a Damascus head, but it would be awesome to see a custom design that you wouldn't normally see. With like a deep coffee etch or something idk hell I basically have one designed I just cant build it bc I'm do broke it almost hurts to think about it. So I'm pretty much guiding you yiesrds building a fully custom axe of your choosing that is actually more like my dream axe that I cant build but want to see cone to life 😂
    Legitimately though please do some custom crazy functional weapons again. Goldsmith here: I find it strange they had a prue. There’s literally no need for it whatsoever when you’re casting a simple bar, or at least not in that way. In stead, we’d just have a cast with (yes, a funnel shape at the top but also) room to spare so that you simply get a larger bar. The top doesn’t need to be perfect, since it’s pretty mucht such a basic piece of material that literally everything about it will change. A sprue would more be used if they were actually directly casting the rings or something. Then a sprue would be left after casting.

Those two places having different tools etc still makes sense, but the reason is a different one.
