It's not as simple and, above all, cheap as it may seem. To switch from an 8-speed cassette and Claris derailleur to an 11-speed setup, you need to replace not only the rear derailleur, cassette, and chain but also the front crankset (due to the narrower chain) and the rear derailleur shifter, incurring additional costs. Usually, the hub that supports 8 speeds may not handle 10 speeds, so there's a concern about needing to change the hub as well. Additionally, the Ultegra derailleur won't work with the Claris shifter.

My other bike is fixed gear. Done this cassette thing on my adventure bike.46x30 chainrings, but think I can work out a 46x28 rig. The same range basically as 12 speed, but closer ratio using just 9 speed. 11-36 cassette. Tinkering is half the fun! I like shorter cranks and have 175mm now. Upgrade to hollowtech standard Samox, evenly spaced 4 arm 64mm bcd small 30 tooth ring and put 28 tooth in it's place. Probably go uphill 4mph at 80 RPM with a full touring load! Think the rear derailleur can just handle all that wrap. 9 speed chain can wear almost 1% before replacing, 12 speed. 5%.way cheaper to use 9 speed.

@@ulukai_555 45-51(13%) is actually way less difference in cadence than 11-13 (18%) and, on the top end, jumps tend to be much more noticeable anyway. so yeah, its a big difference to have 11-12-13 instead of 11-13 on a road bike. or to put it different: you almost need to go almost 9kph faster for the 11tooth cog to have the same cadence again that you had on the 13 tooth one. thats a hell of a difference. in perspective, 45-51 is only around one kph difference.

If you already have a long-cage derailleur and your wheel has a freehub, it's quite reasonable to get a new cassette and chain.
If you aren't looking at high-end components anyway, or for an older bike, you could buy a long-cage derailleur, cassette, and longer chain on the cheap or gently used all cheaply as well.
Problem comes if you're trying to replace a cassette for a bike with a freewheel... then you basically need new wheels. I happened to find a very closely-matching wheel with a freehub (what you need for a cassette) for my folding bike, that was dirt cheap at a shop that was getting rid of unused repair parts... but this isn't likely to be the case for many.

you don’t need to go from 2 to 3 gears in the front, you would lose shift quality and chain retention by doing so. Non-ergonomic cassette. The small chainrings should be changed in 1 tooth steps. With this cassette you will lose power when shifting at higher speed. Example of a comfortable 11-s cassette: 11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-27-30 teeth

You can’t just say “do this” in your tidal. The average person doesn’t know what to look for and every bike is different so what he shows you may not work for you. You would be better off just going to a bike shop and getting someone there to talk to you about your shifting.

If you need a 36 to climb, there wouldn't be no use of a 12 or 11 on the flat. No average human can pulled thoses gears ! And on top of that you get big holes in in your midrange gears !

"no average human (sic) can pulled (sic) thoses (sic) gears!" HAHAHAHA
Hey, Frenchman. Sorry your knees can't handle a 11T sprocket, let alone a 12T sprocket. Many of us can.
Also, if you get "big holes" (lol => big gaps, bucko - you're the one with a big hole) between your gears, I wonder how you used to ride 10, or 20 years ago...
It's a bit pathetic that now, some people actually think it's impossible to ride a road bike if you don't have a 1T gap between each sprocket...
