Photographing a Hidden Gem | Canon EOS R vs. 5DSR Image Quality Comparison for Landscape Photography

  • After eyeing the mega resolution of the Canon 5DSR for years, I finally got my hands on a secondhand model. In this video, I revisit one of my favorite Pennsylvania hidden gems and test out the sharpness and dynamic range of the 5DSR and see how it compares to my Canon EOS R. If you'd like to see the full images used in this video, follow the link below to the accompanying article I wrote detailing my thought process in buying this somewhat older DSLR.
    To make sure this comparison is as fair as possible, I set up a composition with the 5DSR and left the tripod in the exact same location and wide angle lens at the same focal length. The only difference was swapping out the older DLSR model for the newer mirrorless body. I went through and tested the inherent resolution of the final image, sharpness and clarity of the details, dynamic range (ex. noise in the lifted shadows), and color gradations.
    I look forward to testing out both camera bodies in the future, particularly on a few more situations where I can test the limitations of each sensor. I know the 5DSR is not super well equipped to handle moire in portrait photography work, but I'd still like to test them head to head. For the type of landscape photography I frequently do though, I know that this scenario will be a great accurate comparison of what I can expect from both bodies.

    Great review. Have 5DSR for 5 years and stll kicking hard and earning money for real estate, 360 tours. Even it lack focus in low light for weddings and not ideal report camera, its beast. I was looking for R5, but that high price is not able to confirm any kind of big improvement which it bring to me. So will stay with 5DSR for next years until it end dead. Have a good light !

      Thanks! It definitely is a stellar camera still in 2021. I have plans to do another real world test against the R5 in the near future. But I think you're right, there's still just a great quality to the 5DSR that makes it a tremendous buy in today's market.

    Thank you so much for the real world test! Loved seeing you actually go through the process outdoors and using the screen to max zoom to achieve max sharpness and detail. I’m looking into the 5dsr on the used market but have one main concern: battery life.
    What is your opinion? I currently have a canon 6d and I love that I can essentially leave it on and trust that it’s resting state barely sips power. All day battery life easy. I heard the 5dsr does poorly with battery life, what’s your opinion on that?
    I initially had a mirrorless camera but got frustrated with battery life.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography  11 месяцев назад

      Hey Alan, glad you found it useful! The battery is great on the 5dsr compared to mirrorless for sure. If you use the viewfinder primarily, the battery will be on par with the 6d. If you use live view it might be a little worse though as the sensor has to read a lot more pixel data!

    Nice comparison Brian. I think where the 5dsr will really shine would be making large prints. All that fine detail would render wonderfullly in large format inject prints. Love all the detail you caputed on the leaf shot and the farm shot.

    Hi Brian, read your article on the 5DS R from Feb this year as well, spot on. :) Have you tried using the ETTR method in combination with HTP in raw for landscape shots? I use HTP on all of my Canon bodies now. Trick is making sure you pick the right profile in DPP or ACR as a starting point (ACR best is camera neutral, DPP the same). This eliminates the advantage of other systems sensors, all the while giving you a much more pleasurable camera to work with and the most amazing and accurate colors of all brands. I use ADOBE RBG as well.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography  2 года назад

      Thanks Carl! Glad you liked the article as well. I absolutely love the 5DSR, so much so that I have an unused new one in my closet for the day my current one ages out. Hopefully that'll mean I have 15 - 20 more years of 5DSR use! I do sometimes use ETTR, though I should more often. I usually just go for a balanced exposure. Most of my images aren't crazy high dynamic range anymore, so the 5DSR works perfectly for my case. The R5 is my hybrid video/general camera when I'm not in full "photography focus" mode, and while I love the images it creates, it doesn't have the same feel as the 5DSR. Hard to pinpoint because it's not image quality or sharpness, but just a general aesthetic to the 5DSR that really shines.

    • @carlgarrard9710
      @carlgarrard9710 2 года назад

      @@brianbeattyphotography Funny thing is that I just got mine and I'm already wanting another for the exact same reason. Totally agree with you about it. It's not often I buy two of the same camera, they have to be really special. The 5DS R is that, just as you've said. I do recommend using HTP and ETTER, you won't regret it. Shadows and mids get more photons with longer exposure thus improving their quality dramatically. This without losing any highlights :). HTP is fantastic! Silly me I thought all this time it only worked for Jpegs, nope. I'm doing a write up about the camera on my own blog, call me inspired.

      Thanks Kevin! It's one of my favorite spots for sure. I'm glad you liked the comparison, and definitely don't feel like going with the R is in some way a downgrade! It's an excellent camera for both photos and video. For my purposes at least, I think it's better than the R6 (resolution), though definitely not as much of a tank as the R5. If you want to have the same color in Eos R just use Camera Standart (Camera matching) and then they will be exatcly the same,otherwise Adobe Standart and Adobe Landscape are different for R and 5DSr.I have edited in Adobe DNG profile editor the original Camera Standart with more opened shadows and more flatten contrast very similar to Adobe Standart but with the original Canon colors,best of booth worlds :)

    I still use my 5dsr alongside my R and R6, for the same reasons you demonstrate in your landscape and nature photos. For action and events, I use my R6, and my R when I need the extra 10 Mpix pixels on my RF glass. But for everything else where I have time to setup a tripod and compose, my trusted 5dsr still gets the nod, since the sensor and overall shooting experience still holds up against the alternatives. I have rented an R5 and still don’t feel the need to “upgrade” from the 5dsr paired with my R6. Well at least until we have a R5s with 75+ Mpix! Keep shooting that 5dsr, it has a lot of life left in it.

    • @brianbeattyphotography
      @brianbeattyphotography  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the thoughts, and glad you are enjoying the same setup! I’m really liking the balance between the R and 5DSR, and agree that I don’t feel any desire for the R5 based on how great the 5DSR has been. Would love to try out the R6 someday too... enjoy!

      If you can only choose one, would you choose the R or the 5DSR?
      I'm debating between getting either one of these...

    • @mxilplict
      @mxilplict 3 года назад

      @@amorbukid5899 For me, unless you need the AA-filter-free 50 megapixels, the R wins for its versatility and RF mount. The 5dsr excels for landscape and studio (and anything else that doesn’t move too quickly!), while the R does those things decently well while being vastly superior for video, lower light and dynamic conditions and lens choices available . They are both roughly the same new (with the 5dsr going for a bit cheaper used), and use the same batteries. If you have a well-stocked EF glass selection and shoot studio or landscape stills, the 5dsr may be the best value for performance. I know it still wins at architectural photography with the EF L tilt-shift lenses!

      It’s been this way for as long as anyone can remember. Thankfully it’s relatively hidden and the social media masses haven’t flocked to it or it would be toppled over by now. Fog, ice, fall color would all be cool to see with it
