    It does matter who's in government, not so much in the short-term, but if Americans can consistently elect people who are financially responsible and not corrupt, then we can turn this trend around. It will take a long time and Americans aren't known for electing financially educated people into office so it's more likely America will simply collapse under the weight of the stupidity of its people while politicians launder all the money they can through pet projects and wars.

      It's a bit annoying and unfortunate. When i was born, the national debt was $2,150 per person. Now it's over $100,000 per person. And I'm not even that old. It's truly alarming and best advice get out of debt, make regular investments and be debt free and financially stable.

      Safest approach i feel to go about it is to diversify investments. By spreading investments across different asset classes, like bonds, real estate, and international stocks, they can reduce the impact of a market meltdown. its important to seek the guidance of an expert.

    Ms. York is 100% right! My company's import tariff when from 5% to 28% in 2019. We just passed the cost to our customers, but our sales came down with the higher price, then we have to cut cost on something else such as the number of warehouse staff. What Americans don't understand is that you can raise the tariff to 300%, something will never be made in the US again. The US just don't have the enough skilled workers from sewing machine opoeraters/pattern makers in garment factories to semiconductor manufacturing engineers. On top of that, the down line supply chain base for many industries aren't in the US and it will take years to reestablish. Protectionism and tariff will destroy the economy, just ask Argentina. 2019 tariff costed us trillions to bail out the farmers and the 1929 tariff bright us the Great Depression, I guess Trump will Make America Great Depressed Again!

    The other thing that many people fail to see, apart from the ridiculousness of having to tariff everything up to 70% to cover the income tax shortfall, is the fact that the entire premise of having the put in the tariffs is so that manufacturing will be brought back to the US. No matter what happens, the bulk of the manufacturing for what the US imports is NOT going to come back to the US, but for argument's sake, let's just assume it does. So, you get up manufacturing everything from diapers and t-shirts, to little spinner doodads and TVs and everything in between. Well, what happens to the imports that will get smaller and smaller? That means that the tariffs collected will also become smaller and smaller. Where are they going to get trillions of dollars in revenue that they just lost in giving up income tax revenue?

    I assume China will be squeezed by their overcapacity due to reduced US imports as well as the opportunistic pricing pressures from the markets they are left with. I also assume there will be wage pressures due to US inflation.
    I wonder how many import dependent companies will shrink or die with tariffs.

    • @erickanter

    • @dmfoneill
      @dmfoneill Месяц назад

      @@erickanter Having worked for a CPGs company that was forced to move production from US to Mexico and China (by Big Box economic coercion), I'm inclined to think structural changes over the last 25 or so years have put many US importers (once producers) into untenable positions. The capital and operational costs of reshoring make it likely that these companies will decide to liquidate before taking the risk of investment as margins, even with price increases, are slim. Building factories in an inflationary (and politically driven) unstable environment, particularly for smaller firms, is a hard sell even in growth markets.
      I think that's pretty real!

    I am Canadian, and I see this as being a real burden on the North American economy. Since the Trump victory, I have been making all my large purchases now. I was going to purchase a new Ford F150 in March 2025 but just purchased now due to future price increases. I am also doing as many high ticket item purchases before January. I am borrowing many as the interest rates are less than what the price increases are going to be. The US is going to see an economic slow down with an increase in cost of living. I am guessing that you will be seeing employment cuts in order to cut operating costs. Employees are the easiest thing to get rid of when cutting costs.

      Tariffs are something we Americans pay. Imagine you are a chair salesperson. If you sell me a chair from your business for $100, then you receive $100 (pre-tax). That chair comes across our border. At customs, Trump tax imposes a 20% tariff on the chair aka $20. Then it arrives at my house. I end up paying the $100 for the chair, whatever the sales tax is, the $20 tariff, and the shipping and delivery charge. You don't pay the $20 tariff, I do.

      Social security is literally our money. We pay into the system. We expect it back. It is counted as revenue. Fema will go to disaster hit areas and give a % of revenue to people who are impacted by disasters. I learned that first hand when my house got 4 inches of flood water from hurricane Helene this year. It wasn't much, but it was something. Ask anyone on medicare whether they're expecting their medicare check next month. Revenue is spent. Whether it is spent on us or on big corporations is up to how we vote.

    Tariffs in the short term might be beneficial but in the long term they won’t.. to start with tariffs are pasted on to the consumer which means the cost of goods go up. That equates to fewer sales which also equates to less sales tax. Let’s say he is successful in bringing back or creating more businesses in america because of tariffs that equates to no tariff tax.at all. I think the best course of action is an income based tiered flat tax that would reduce the IRS by at least half and make fair taxes for everyone. No loopholes no more refunds you net 10 million you pay a flat tax on 10 million you live in poverty you pay no tax.
