And when the Tatars returned to the Soviet lines they were arrested and sent to a gulag.

It's called filtration, a practice used by allied forces as well. Where are the guarantees that soldier that allegedly "escaped" were not recruited by the Germans? You have problems using your head or what?

Yeah no kidding. I have read about so many stories of that happening. Stalin was paranoid beyond understanding about his enemies and viewed any Red Army soldier who surrendered to the Germans as a traitor and an enemy of the people and any soldiers who returned to their unit during the war after escape or mother Russia after the war were seen as highly suspect and likely traitors, brainwashed by the Germans and suspected spies, most were usually sent packing to the Gulag. One story I read about was three Russian POW’s who were pilots and near death from starvation from a lengthy stay in a German POW camp. They managed to steal an unguarded German airplane near their camp that they had just escaped from and they miraculously got it started. They were so weak they could barely pull the flaps back to climb, all three had to pull back on it. They got it airborne and by sheer luck and some skill I assume made it back to Russian territory, they barely landed it in one piece. . After they told their comrades their miraculous story of their daring escape, expecting a heroes welcome, instead they were promptly arrested by the NKVD or SMERSH for their troubles. . Even considering the three of them were mere skeletons of their former selves baffles all logic and reason. Stalin was a monster of the worst kind to anyone he deemed an enemy of the people.
