    Please just I had a front half roof replaced on 1900 terraced house. The reason the roof failed of 40 years maybe, was the felt at the eaves had disintergrated allowing water that had penetrated the roof slates to not to reach the gutter. The roof was fitted recently with no eaves suport trays. I insisted the roofer fit them eaves support trays, he said I did not need them. I told him that modern current practices would include them on a replacement roof. From my commonsense am I right and should they be fitted as normal practice? Many thanks

      We always fit eaves support trays on reroofs. If the felt is left sagging at that point, if there is no other support then water getting onto the felt will pool there and not get to the guttering. So should be needed yes.

    The eve protectors seem to angle backwards Uber the felt..
    So won’t any water under the titles roll backwards at this point as it makes a natural valley.. see the recent skill builder video

      They would happen if the fascia rides high on a lower pitched roof but in this case they are definitely angled towards the gutter. Thanks for watching.

    I’ve just noticed that it looks like you’ve done the same thing as a roofer did on my roof ….. if the rafters are lower than the edge of the gutter trim facia , thus the tray tilts back and down the water can run back towards the house…
    It’s just rained and I’ve got water in my bedroom because my roofer couldn’t be bothered to replace the under sarking and he nailed the eaves trays lower than the hight of the gutter facia… three different roofers … three call backs after three leaks! It would have been okay but I didn’t have a leak to start with! 🤪😑🤬

      yeah well you get some bad "roofers" out there and it is a bit of mind field I'm afraid. Good due diligence and reviews, recommendations, etc. is the way to go. Also the tray does tilt the right way here, you can add a batten on top of the rafters for it to sit on if needed to get the right angle.

    On our garage roof which leaks into a utility conversion the first batten is really close to the edge, do i need to remove the batten and fit the tray underneath and then refit the batten?

    • @davesalter
      @davesalter  Год назад +1

      Sounds like you have the smaller plain tile roofs. The eaves trays are usually for the larger concrete tiles hence the size. You could remove the batten or cut down the tray so it fits, as long as the felt will overlap.

    Great video well explained,I’ve had condensation in loft,so I’ve fitted soffit vents(circular 600mm centres)also fitted lap vents🤞
    How much would tile vents cost to install on identical roof to the video you did? Thanks again for video

    • @davesalter
      @davesalter  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the complement and watching! Price depends on how many vents to be fitted, but I guess 3 front and 3 back would be around £450-500+. Prices vary based on experience, size of company, if they charge VAT. etc.

      @@davesalter thanks for that Dave,the roofer who’s coming to do same job as shown in video,recons no need for tile vents,as soffit vents and lap vents should do cure the condensation 🤞,will have to wait till December to find out I suppose.Thanks again

      That’s not it’s purpose but may work depending on how they are getting in.

    Felt supposed to sit in gutter as secondary? That looked short?

    • @davesalter
      @davesalter  7 месяцев назад

      Felt should not be in the gutter as it rots away like this one did. This is shorter as I cut it back to clean it up. Eaves tray does the job.

    The tile overlap was missing two tiles up from the one you were poking 0:51 - could that be a contributiong factor? Cheers

    • @davesalter
      @davesalter  Год назад

      Yeah wondered when someone would look that out haha. Good spot. Yeah I did change a couple tiles also as noticed then mid the job. It can cause leaks there if the break is higher than the overlap of the tile yes. And those can be tricky to find if it’s at the top of the file too.

    What would be average cost to do this. I also have leaks on slowing side. Is treatment the same?

    • @davesalter
      @davesalter  Год назад +2

      Hard to answer as there is no average cost as every situation and house might be different. Without seeing your job I couldn’t comment if it needed the same treatment as this video. A professional would have to assess it and advise, sometimes 3 sets of advise and quotes can help you decide.

    gutter fitted far too high, start by refitting the gutter below the level of the edge of the roof - just common sense, watching these videos by so-called experts makes me cringe, which is why I never use builders and do it all myself properly and I'm not a builder but I have some common sense

    • @davesalter

      I’d love to see some of your DIY work put to video, I notice you don’t have any videos so maybe you should. Im sure we can all learn something from someone with so much common sense, that they never need a tradesman in the house. 😂😂
