Hey Guys,
How crazy is this man for not joining the NBA?
If Oscar Schmidt joined the NBA, Would he have won a championship or MVP?
Would he be better than Larry Bird?
Thoughts and Opinions?
- M I K E
I think he maybe could’ve averaged 28 pts 7 reb 1 ast in his prime, I think he would be 2nd team all NBA every year
He probably wouldn't have done as good. But thats just my guess. I love your videos mike, keep it up
If he had tried it out for at least 1 season in the NBA and did better than expected, it would have been a believable what-if story. Dominating the olympics back then is the same as an ex NBA player dominating the china league right now so it's a really farfetched statement for him to say he could be top 10 without even trying.
He would have been a step up from Toni Kukoc.
Which is a great player but not even top 111.
OMFGGG --> ruclips.net/video/GPEJP1h44G0/видео.html 😱😱😱
Mike didn't even mention that all of his stats were on 40 minute games and not on 48 like in the nba. Impressive!!!
Good point
Man, that really puts things into perspective.
Wow
Most elite NBA scorers (beside Wilt) didn't play 40+ mins.
You comparison of the 40 & 48 minutes are irrelevant since that's not the actual minutes being played by the players. Nonetheless, I have no doubt Oscar would have ended up in the NBA's top5 all-time scorers if he had played in the NBA, but top-10 players of all-time, no. It takes more than just scoring.
Being a Brazilian and seeing everybody on the comment section giving Oscar the respect that he deserves is really good.
Much love from Brazil to Mike and all of you guys🇧🇷
Verdade, mano. Pelo menos a gente tem uma coisa pra se orgulhar.
PedroHsl could he guard? I think that would have effected his planning time in the nba. The guy looks like an incredible shooter but if he was scoring 30 was he also giving up 30 on the other end? This tape looks like he was a bit slow and could not jump. But you could also say those things about Larry bird.
@@blankname6629 He wasn't a top tier defender, but he could help when he needed. He was like a James Harden. Scoring in one end and lacking in the other. But he was a little bit better then Harden in the defensive end
@Show Genius I know he defends. I never said that he didn't. All I said was: "James Harden is not a super defender".
Brazil Porra
Imagine being 34 years old, playing The Dream Team, being guarded by one of the greatest defenders of all time who knows he just needs to shut you down and you still score 31 lol!
Insane
Biblical.
He played pro until 47 and was still the top scorer. 34 is nothing as a Pro Athlete nowadays. And back then He was at his peak at 35, my uncle trained him.
He was 34 not 104, still a very young man and wasn't at his peak yet if you saw him play. Could have played NBA for another 10 years. His training regime was 30 years ahead of other Athletes.

Kobe loved Oscar. He lit up the USA team. A player that would’ve been better in today’s game.
It honestly looks like watching an old school version of Luka Doncic or something.
DammitBobby420 Oscar himself said he sees much of him in Luka (but obviously his champ mentality makes him say he was way better than him)
Kobe was a real student and historian of the game, one of the greatest of all time
Johnny Purple yea but he wasn’t even the best Laker
he lit up the NBA highschool team like Mike said when he went against NBA talent which he was forced fed the ball he only averaged 24 points how sure are we he would've been able to do that on a 82 game season and is constantly facing that top tier talent the Olympic game is much different then the nba
Damn, in all my years of watching basketball...I've never known about this guy. What a phenom! Good video!

If one of the greatest players ever idolizes you, that says enough. Kobe recognized not just the talent and skill that Oscar had, but his work ethic too. How much better would Oscar have become had he joined the NBA where he could develop his talent and skill even more? Oscar Schmidt was a baller, hands down.
For sure, I'm not going to say he couldn't be top 10 all-time just because he didn't play in the NBA. It seems that both Bird and Kobe respected him and he was pretty dominant vs the US in the Olympics.
Oscar played at italian league against Kobe's father. He has a 3 point contest threre that he made 22 of 25.
Ecu!! Go Pirates!!
@@DaniloOliveira36 Man, Oscar is the best scorer to ever grace the European courts and that says a lot... European leagues have had Drazen Petrovic, Toni Kukoc, Manu Ginobili, Arvydas Sabonis and none of them even came close to Oscar... Also, people need to realize that in the NBA Oscar would not be as dominant... cause they wouldn't let him shoot... Larry Bird was probably the best shooter of all time before Curry showed up and they only let him shoot 2-3 3pt shots per game... Oscar's big weapon was how he stretched the floor... shooting from 30ft away like it was nothing... NBA coaches would have chewed him out for it and throw him on the bench cause back then NBA was clueless about how dominant 3pt shooting really is... European teams shot a ton of 3pt shots even back then...
Oscar Schmidt would have won a scoring title in the NBA for sure if they let him play his game... hands down... he would score almost 40ppg in 48minute games... he scored over 30ppg in 40min games in Europe most seasons which is absurd... but Americans will never admit it... they are way too ignorant even now... Oscar Schmidt in terms of scoring was almost an exact copy of Larry freakin Bird in the absurd amount of different ways he could score... and Larry is a top 5 player of all time hands down... however Oscar wasn't a godly passer like Larry was... not even close...
@@sportschool3537 I know man. I'm a Brazilian. He told his coach at NBA in pre season. "Here, I'll score one point a minute". 2 pre season games he played, that's what happened.

Fun fact: he was obsessed with training and practiced for hours and hours straight. He said he put so many hours into training that he doesn’t believe any other athlete in basketball could have practiced more than him. These days he often work with the national football team trying to teach his mindset to the players.
Andre Silva I was a “federado” as a teenager and I remember Oscar would come to my club to train sometimes and me and my friends witnessed him practicing, it was insane, he would be shooting non stop for hours, alone, a crazy human!
After every practice he always did like 100 shots to became the scoring machine he was

I am from Brazil, i have a lot of respect for Oscar. But i miss Drazen.... RIP
Drazen and Oscar score more than 100 points combined... historical Battle!
Wow I wonder if there was a clip recorded.
Funny how USA says “in NBA he wouldn’t average high numbers”, than boom, a Luka doncic puts bigger numbers in NBA than in Spain in his rookie season. A young Oscar would have developed his game and would be deadly in NBA as well, also with more minutes per quarters, less physical contact than FIBA basketball. Also the 3 point FG was new in NBA and he was already a master in his young years. Oscar was 6ft 9 inches tall, that’s exactly Larry bird size. He didn’t played well in defense but no one can question his offense. He would have bird scoring AT LEAST, as he never played with good teams like bird.
Every great player put numbers in nba. Those who said anything different are just dumbs. There’s a lot of examples. And the nba today it’s the house of foreigners.
The NBA's style of play is different now. It's a European style of play
The way he shot the rock he would have been just fine in the NBA
And to top it all off, Oscar played 40 minute games overseas, vs the 48 minute games of the NBA. He would’ve averaged a lot more points with the extra time
Rogue Wookiee probably way better than ben simmons
“They held Oscar to JUST 31 points” . Lol
Kyle Snyder how many? Make me impressed .
Someone has to shoot the ball. If had had 50+ shots the coach trusted him more than other player.
Kyle Snyder what? You are using the same argument they used for Kobe all his career. Someone had to shoot the ball. The coach goes with his best player to do the job. Basketball is a team work but it’s not a demonstration of socialism.
Kyle Snyder if you don’t give a fuck why spend your time here ?
Kyle Snyder if you don’t give a fuck why waste your time here ?
You could have mentioned he was called “holy hand” cause of this accuracy in decisive moments. He refused this nickname many times cause in his opinion he should’ve been called “trained hand”. He was a basketball nerd and must have inspired Kobe with his work ethics.
Representando Brasil
Felipe Gonçalves that makes me like him so much more
In the 80s when shooting 3s in the NBA was almost a rarity, this guy was like Steph Curry shooting tons of them and making more than 40% of them, even from several feet beyond the line! I can't believe I'm only learning about him now, way ahead of his time!
I saw him several times live when he played in Spain. He was the most amazing shooter I've ever seen. It was a real torture for the rival team.
It is important to mention that in FIBA basketball (outside the NBA) games last only 40 minutes, not 48 minutes as in the NBA, that is, if FIBA games had 48 minutes, Oscar would score even more points.
“Held Oscar to just 31 points” 😂😂 yea great job

I mean, if the guy is averaging 40something "just" scoring 31 is a "bad" game. But he definitely worded it like he was about to say held to 10 points or something.

Horrible defense by the USA .....lol
Stop lying, he was better than college kids in the Olympics!
I saw Oscar play in the early 90's. He wasn't in his prime but the dude could shoot the lights out! In the 80s he would have been one of the best scorers in the NBA!
I remember, Pippen really tried to stop him when they play the Dream Team. Oscar was past his prime but he couln't really stop him. Oscar was insane on the offensive end
Pippen did lock him down. He played college player team USA
@@FunwiththeCoopers that 1992 game, he was mostly guarded by Barkley and Bird (my mistake) and score 24 points, basically he was not getting that much attention, for obvious reasons. Then, Atlanta 1996 he was guarded by Pippen, remember this is the same Pippen from 1996 Bulls. Brazil never was a threat to US winning but Pippen wanted to really stop him. Even so, Oscar score 26 on him. In 1996 Oscar was 38 years old. You mean someone at 38, the only scorer in that team, score 26 on you at your prime, is put a stop?
@@dragonmaldito he committed 7 turnovers and his shooting percentage is bad even he scored 26 points it's not efficient game for him and 92 dream was killing Brazil larry and Barkley wasnt even trying to play defense I'm not saying his not good Olympics is not the same level as nba if Barkley played overseas he would've same or even more points than him. Petrovic during that time was the best European player imo
Pippen goaded him in the 2nd half watch it again.
@@FunwiththeCoopers im not saying by any means that Brazil could be a threat to US. By talent or phisically, no way Brazil could compete straight to the end. All im saying is, even when trying to stop he still had his points, even well past his prime.

He's 38 years old in 1996... lol 😂
For anybody pointing out how slow and unathletic he looks, I've got two words for you: Larry Bird.

Oscar in his Hall Of Fame Tribute said Larry Bird is his greatest basketball idol. He recognized himself in Bird game

He wasnt worth any more. He was only used to playing 40 minute games once a week, not 82 games a season with play-offs to come and 80s NBA physical defence. Without an NBA physique, he'd wash out like many rookies who were hot in college, and even as a Reggie Miller type 6'8" shooting guard, even coming off the bench, he never once in his career hit an NBA distance three-pointer with a NBA size defender in his face. There's a reason that a scrub team like New Jersey Nets only offered him scrub money.

He would’ve been a solid role player or maybe an all star. Look at jimmer ferdette in China? Dude was a legend but sucked in the nba. Calm down
I remember watching Oscar in the olympics in the 80’s. He absolutely would’ve been a star. He had great agility for his size, tremendous court awareness, a lightning quick release and most of all he had the greatest intangible, passion that was off the charts. His will to win would have carried him into the upper echelon of the NBA. Not saying he would’ve given Jordan fits, but he would’ve got his, believe that.

He hates being called talented. Says he worked his ass off training to become that good ahahaha
That's fucking awesome
That’s cocky. His ego is so big that he can’t even stand the fact that people remind him that he has been lucky to be granted with such amount of talent. He want to believe that everything he achieved is due purely to his work ethic, which again is very cocky. There are millions of basketball player that work their ass off night and day to try and become a professional basket athlete, but only like 0,001 of them achieve that goal. Is that because the 99,9% others arent working hard enough ? Of course not, it’s just that they weren’t talented enough to begin with, no matter how hard they trained.
So being pissed off at someone calling you talented when you’re a world class athlete is not only delusional, it’s also extremely cocky and disrespectful. It’s basically like saying "if you don’t go pro, it’s because you’re lazy".
@@trgrgtgrtgr7724 To be fair, talent alone isn't enough to make it to where he was as a player. I think the point he was trying to make was that his talent wasn't the only thing that helped him in his career but his will to put in work when it is needed of him, which is something most people aren't willing to do.
After all, you can be the most talented baller on the planet but still play like shit compared to other more experienced and hard-working players if you don't have the work ethic to go with it.
@@trgrgtgrtgr7724 if you think these millions of wannabe basketball players work as much as guys like Oscar and MJ did you are sadly mistaken. These guys are the kind that will be in the gym before everyone and will also leave after everyone else. Not even fair to put Oscar and MJ in same sentence because MJ's athleticism is not even comparable, like Oscar says MJ and Kobe just fly anywhere it isnt even fair.. Oscar is a great player but mostly a great shooter, so yea it is more normal that his skills were acquired through grind and training, he didnt become a great shooter because of talent. When he gets called talented he thinks people are taking off his merits from all the hard work. Surely his height helped though which seems to be the main attribute for a basket player.

Tamo ganhando reconhecimento aos poucos 🤞🏿 DORIME AMENO
I remember kobe talking about this guy a long ass time ago
I’m from Brazil and so happy you made this video. I was 6 years old by the time of Indianapolis Panamerican Games but I still have good memories of that day. Don’t forget he played 40 minutes game and not 48 like in NBA. Oscar has a huge patriotism, good character, and recently he fought a brain cancer in a very optimistic way. More than one of the greatests of all time basketball player he is an incredible human. A true sports legend! Tks for the video!
Dude could get his shot whenever he wanted
Best scorer ever
Andrés Carc he’s not Durant
@@Big_Cap51 and u know that how? exactly u don't.
@@kaysphere It's so sad that people talk about the greatest scorer ever and the first name they mention ISN'T Jordan...
KD is GREAT. He's not Jordan.
@ Jordans 3pt shooting is no where near KD 3pt shooting

Those ankles never got better
Omg that looked so painful!!
I saw him live when I was younger, he was a beast... he appeared to never miss a shot.
Finally some respect on Brazilian Legend Oscar himself.
He celebrates like flight after every bucket lol
Well you ever watch a soccer match
Lmfaoooo 😭😭😂
If I played pan American games and if I was on a stretch against the best players in the world I would celebrate like that too lmfao
Yung CA lmao haha
who tf is flight
I've played with him a few times in Brazil ...
Often after my training I would stay to watch the professional time practice (we played for the same club but I was just a kid 16 at the time) and my coach would often tell me to go pick up ball for him so he could practice 3 points shots, he just wouldn't miss,.. it was crazy to look at that everyday training 5 days a week, it did not matter you would still be impress, the guy is a legend.
I'm brazilian, and brazilian basketball is undervalued worldwide, I see in this video that we finally have the respect we deserve, and I thank you very much for that, we love this sport 🇧🇷🔥🏀
Grande Oscar Schmidt! Um dos maiores ídolos do esporte do Brasil!!
I am from Greece and I understand the reason for never played in nba( same or similar story like Nick galis) , Oskar is a legend, epic player the best long distance shoot I ever seen...
I heard about Oscar Schmidt from Kobe talking about him years ago then a couple years after he got inducted into the Hall of Fame
Paul George: “Those are all bad shots” 😂
I just spit beer all over my keyboard
The ones that we got the pleasure to enjoy the 80s basketball (both NBA and international) know that this guy could just flat out score at any level. The thing is, he was 6' 9"-6'10" small forward as good at shooting as anyone has ever been, including Curry and with an incredible release. Ir was a trigger basically. If he got the ball he just shot...and made the shot. Unbelievable
Video idea: What if Kawhi Leonard never got traded to the Spurs
He probably wouldn’t be as good. They developed him very slowly and carefully, which is why he such an efficient scorer.
His jumpshot wouldn't have been as elite as it is now, coming into the league he wasnt a shooter, and Chip England is one of the best shooting coaches in the league
Oscar Schmitt: I would have been the oldest player in the NBA, Vince carter: hold my retirement funds
ANIME LOVER 2020 stop hating bitch
ANIME LOVER 2020 ignorant, you gotta have some type of skill to be 40 and still in the nba
ANIME LOVER 2020 yea and Karl Malone is trash too, never one a ring, no skill, only knows how to play basketball 🤦♂️
oscar actually played until he was 45, in his last year, he averaged 33.1
Man. I grew up watching and being inspired by O Schmidt. It's such a pleasure to see the world recognizing his talent at so many levels. That makes me feel very very happy.
How was this man who looks like Trevor from GTA 5 torching NBA legends.
@爪卂尺匚 卂匚乇几ㄖᐯ乇ㄥ丂 Yes I know there was an actor but his name isn't Trevor Phillips that's the full name of Trevor, his real name is Steven Ogg
Because they were in college at the time
@Azahr Malik you think that's really dudes picture? Come on man, and YOU'RE gonna threaten to clown someone? Be better.
Peace.
Cuz he was like Steph
LOL We've seen this before, the scouts figured him out right, he's got no NBA game, and would have been exposed, lucky to be drafted at all, he never played againt NBA players, Olympics were amateur then, his 28 ppg needs to be adjusted to reality, in the NBA, more like 2.8 ppg #LOL
Probably the greatest shooter of all time who could really score. Would have been an all-time great in the NBA and was way before his time. He would be the perfect player in today's NBA and at 6'9 and the shooting range that he had, he'd be unstoppable. It's a wonder why during his playing days that he was called just Oscar.
Most important of all is that he's such a good person. I've met him twice. Always full of life and gratitude. Joyful, extroverted, funny. It doesn't matter where you're, he just stops and talk, take pictures. Great Guy. A true legend in and outside the court
My idol growing up. He played for my team Flamengo in the begining of the 2000's.
He's in another patamar
Pedro Henrique u don’t post to idol no one 😂

I remember Oscar Schmidt. I always wondered why he wasn't in the NBA. He looked a lot like Jerry West with Curry's three point range.
Remember watching him play the Dream Team in 92, may even still have it on VCR😂 Definitely a legend of the game, even knew about him here in Australia, great video!
Hey guys, I'm Brazilian, and that's why I know a little about Oscar. We call him "Saint Hand", and he refused NBA, because he wanted play Olympic games, and other competitions from Brazilian team. The video has been perfect! Congrats!
Apologize about my poor English.
Man, I feel honored for hearing and seeing that Oscar is taking your deserved respect.🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Oh wow Schmidt had this lightning quick, compact release. I see how he is able to score by the truckload, and does it with incredible accuracy.
I saw that game live on TV back in 87 that was pretty impressive!
How the hell did i not see this before??? Finally some respect to the brazilian goat
so nice to see people from other countries talking about Oscar. He was a scoring machine. All respect to Oscar. I recomend to what his hall of fame speech. It was inspiring.
Legend in the game, the Holy Hand! He is an Idol to my team and beloved and recognized all over Brazil.
We used to call him “the holy hand” 🙂🙏
For sure one of the greatests in basketball history. "La Bomba" as Kobe used to call him, but here in Brazil he was called "The Holy Hand". Although he always said his ability wasn't a gods gift but lots of heavy and exhausting training. Kobe once said he saw Oscar makes 20 straight 3pt shots in a practice session. He would shoot about 2k times in training. So, definitely, his exellence comes from his hard work and passion for the game of basketball.
he's score 4 points in all star game, 2/2 in only 3 minutes with 59yo
Yeah , that bitch didnt let him play , ill never get over it
@@stuff48 same bro. I'm Brazilian and on this day a lot of our people who loves basketball was waiting to see him playing. And that fucking stupid bitch fucked up with the show. I'll never forget that

Majestoso, fabuloso Oscar!
My aunt was friend with him/his family when he played at Caserta. We once flew on the same flight from Rome to Rio in business class and he was really down to earth and friendly. Great guy and legendary player!
Man you forgot to say he is a basketball HOF, FIBA HOF and Italian basketball HOF. Much love from brazil
.Ps- at the comments some are saying he is a NBA all of Famer and some or saying that he is not a nba HOF so let's go with is wikipidia profile
Because its not "nba hall of fame"... its BASKETBALL hof. There are many people there that didnt play in the nba. Many didnt even get there for playing basketball. There are coaches, commentators etc..
Basketball hall of fame not NBA
He is in the nba hall of fame too
Man!! This guy could’ve got drafted by the bulls around the same time as Jordan got drafted. Forget Paxson or Kerr. Imagine that 😳
Thanks from Brazil. This is a beautiful tribute to our Oscar Schmidt .
Obrigado pelo vídeo, amigo! O Brasil se orgulha do Oscar! Thanks for the video, buddy! Brazil's proud of Oscar!
