My mind was blown recently when I was looking into the fates of the companies that made my childhood gaming favorites, and discovered First Star Software still exists in basically its original form! Good on them for sticking around.
I had an Atari 800XL with a 1010 and a 1050. Sure does bring back memories. A few people are making upgrades for the x00/XL/XE series over at AtariAge. Someone's making a 4MB memory upgrade for my worthly 800XL, so I'm planning on firing it up once again.
Was anyone else plagued by the wonky tone of death, which would cause the load to fail, make me start the whole load sequence again and generally ruin my day 8) Favourite game: Blue Max!
I used to have one in the 80’. Great games like Montezuma, Bluemax and Zeppelin. Also a word procesor and others tools. external printer and a cassette and floppy.
Nice to hear the loading sounds again. Used to hear that at my friends house when I would walk over to his house and we would play on his 800XL. Years later when they upgraded to a ST I asked if i could have it. Still got it with the family Spectrum and the ST I had. Good memories.
Anyone else remember having to wait 15 minutes for a game to load? I can just imagine telling my kids they need to wait 15 minutes for a game to load on their tablets. Oh and how about the 1010 tape deck with the buttons that always broke?
I live in Poland and in 1988 I bought an Atari 65XE and an XC-12 tape recorder, but in 89 I installed Turbo Blizzard in the tape recorder and it was like this ruclips.net/video/bmeYo_9A19s/видео.html&ab_channel=ŁukaszSzałaśny And now that's how they load Atari games ruclips.net/video/HKGivXfakAs/видео.html&ab_channel=BANASIU 🕹🕹🕹🕹🕹🕹🕹🕹🕹🕹🕹🕹
Hi. many thanks. This unit is unfortunatelly sold out so I ordered similar converter. Hope that it will work with my Atari :) In any case It seems after my short test that Atari is working well even after 30yrs but PSU has an issue cause computer would not like to boot afetr few mins of operation (after cooling down PSU its ok) and I have bad contacts on cassete deck cable (noisy in audio) so can not upload the sw from cassete... Anyway congrats to your Atari and many thanks for great video. Best regards. Petr
I remeber like i was taking my dog for walk during the loading. Unfortunately for my dog, there was DIY mod, and lading was about 2 minutes then. But still, deep commitment to play was needed anyway :)
Oh wow this takes me back to me boyhood. I would read smash hits mag while listening to I the whole bon Jovi album while waiting for the game to load. Now we know what killed music..... Load times are far too quick nowadays lol
The same thing i may to do on atari800-a8cas-420 emulator or on altirra ,by switching off sio cas in emulator options menu. It's very nostalgic and funny function
Hi. Many thanks! I will buy it probably. Currently I am using RCA to DIN but maybe it will help me to connect SCART TV also. The best way for me is to solve the connection to VGA PC monitor but it is probably not easy... My best regards. P.
omg now it takes the same time to install and update and loading the game... while this time you had music on datasettes later on and more fun inbetween the time.
Tape loading was the worst on this system but I liked it all the same. Had games that took as little a 7 minutes but loads that took over 20 minutes or more. Very often not worth the wait.
hey, I have every game and program for the Atari 8 bit 800 line-up. if you or anyone wants I could put it on a CD at no cost to you. I'll even include an emulator.
It's not RGB composite. You obviously using RF antena output (noise when comp. is off). Also you using unmodified tape mode called "standard" roughly 300 bits/sec. There is much much faster called "turbo" 2kbits/sec to 6411kbits/sec where average game is loaded under 2 minutes. That Jet Set Willy tune is modified to "stereo" modern soundchip mod. Original is different. And much better, but that is not technical fact.
It ain't about best or worst, it's about sweet old memories and what each one had back then. Some peeps had Amigas, others got comodore, some had MSX,....etc. rest of these systems. Get an Orange Pi and try RetrOrange Pi, got lotsa systems. ruclips.net/video/BP90FUFHduE/видео.htmlm20s
Rajesh, Commodore Amiga is a later generation so it's not really a fair comparison. In a way the Amiga is the successor of the Atari 8-bit computers. Commodore and Atari have intertwined histories (google it).
Bah...this is a good representation of what it was like to load from tape. I was a Tandy Color Computer owner since age 6 and I waited a half hour for a program to load...just to watch a globe spin on screen!
If you want to show what it's actually like seeing the output of a real computer why are you pointing your camera at a TV to give us tinny audio and compromised video MUCH WORSE Than PC screen capture software of an emulator. Next time buy a capture card and record the actual output of the machine and upload that instead.
That CLOAD music brings back the days! Lol. Atari was the bomb and came right along after the Atari 2600 console years. Nice video.
boulder dash! I loved this game so much on my C64 in the early 90s.
bring back good memories!!,Pengo was one of my fav 800 xl games!
This was my first computer. Even had two external floppy drives. I learned basic on this machine.
Brought back memories.......you would start the loading program then go get snacks while it was loading
My mind was blown recently when I was looking into the fates of the companies that made my childhood gaming favorites, and discovered First Star Software still exists in basically its original form! Good on them for sticking around.
I was born in 83. I was lucky enough to start out with mario, duck hunt, zelda and contra.
I had an Atari 800XL with a 1010 and a 1050. Sure does bring back memories.

It's true, see here: www.lotharek.pl/category.php?kid=10
My first computer. I had 2 of the "Happy" modified 1050 disk drives and a speedy 300 baud modem. Hi tech!
Was anyone else plagued by the wonky tone of death, which would cause the load to fail, make me start the whole load sequence again and generally ruin my day 8) Favourite game: Blue Max!

OMG this bring back so much memory
Nice desk too
О Боги, наконец-то я услышал знакомый звук загрузки в ATARI ! Окончание на 09:40. :o)
OMG ! Many thanks to you !!! :)
Да!
Classic old stuff, ahh the memories :)
Fantastic machine.
fantastic machine? 10 min to load a game dude.. u spend two lives changing games
I have used at that time some "turbo interface" as addon in cx12 casette recorder.
It worked like turbo tape for c64
welcome to my world as an Atari 800XL is my everyday spare time computer
Anyone else remember having to wait 15 minutes for a game to load? I can just imagine telling my kids they need to wait 15 minutes for a game to load on their tablets. Oh and how about the 1010 tape deck with the buttons that always broke?
If I good remember, International karate lasted about 27 minutes.
I live in Poland and in 1988 I bought an Atari 65XE and an XC-12 tape recorder, but in 89 I installed Turbo Blizzard in the tape recorder and it was like this

Best to load a game straight after coming from school, then have your lunch and boom your game is loaded and ready to play!
Jet Set Willy!
Fav game on the 800XL, Star Raiders.
@TurboCMinusMinus And here I thought we were all supposed to like the very same things. Imagine that.
Totally agree. Star Raiders was the best.
Wow, I totally forgot how long it took to load a game from tape back then... But the sounds really bring back memories :)
its at 300bps
With Turbo mod it was much better. Turbo 2000 loader was our only cartridge :)

i love this Game on this Computer. My first ! Atari 600 xl
Great video but you need to get a 1050 disk drive :)
Couldn't have chosen better game for the video! I've Boulder Dash's intro theme as a ringtone. :D
8+ min. loading screen...we are so spoiled these days.
I remeber like i was taking my dog for walk during the loading. Unfortunately for my dog, there was DIY mod, and lading was about 2 minutes then. But still, deep commitment to play was needed anyway :)

amazing how some of these machines work, and work just as day 1, not like with weird slugish irregular windows
Great to see how long a play was necesarry to run in this years....
10:12 I love that remix of Jet Set Willy!
The same thing i may to do on atari800-a8cas-420 emulator or on altirra ,by switching off sio cas in emulator options menu. It's very nostalgic and funny function

To connect Atari to a VGA monitor you have to use a converter such as: www.converters.tv/products/pal_to_vga/523.html
Wow! Even the real time waiting for the loadi g of the game! ;) ...
My first computer was an Atari 65XE.
And I thought AC Odyssey and Borderlands 3 took forever to load... Our parents had it rough...
Why don't you use Reset button? I know it could be intercepted by programs, but in state with BASIC loaded it worked as power on.
que feeling asi esperaba mis juegos
omg now it takes the same time to install and update and loading the game... while this time you had music on datasettes later on and more fun inbetween the time.
Music from Jet Set Willy :)))
My favorite game was Montezuma revenge
The wonderful thing about Atari 800XL & C64 computers is you can run a small business on them with existing software, for almost no cost...
What is a name/model of a joystick you are using? use to have one of them for my XE and it last forever.
This is QuickJoy SV-131 Superstar.
Nice! where did you get the SIO2SD?
+Ricardo Landaeta
I bought from Lotharek: www.lotharek.pl/
That music sounds a lot like Jet Set Willy
SABERMAN - Ruining old computers since 2010
where'd you get the funky stereo 'Jet Set Willy' theme?

Good God those loading times are looooooooooong as hell!!!! That's the 80s
I hated when it crashed it the last minute lol
Años que no escuchaba la carga de un juego en Atari.
Hi how did you connect PC monitor please? Great video.
+Petr OK1RP
I use this cable "Atari 800XL composite AV SCART"
www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/atari
What it needs is a "real TV" (CRT)
This is not oryginal music from boulder dash, it is from jet set willi game
Mummy!
Piękne odgłosy ładowania gry z magnetofonu.
9+ static minutes of loading noise and screen and when the Boulder Dash finally starts he plays Jet Set Willy music over it... what is the point...
Better graphics than 2600
Atari XL/XE is same Atari 5200.

This is why users copied cassette boot tapes to disk.
Tape loading was the worst on this system but I liked it all the same. Had games that took as little a 7 minutes but loads that took over 20 minutes or more. Very often not worth the wait.
know of any group interested in buying one of these. I have one to sell
I may be interested - does it work? How much do you want for it, and what is included besides the 800XL (if anything)? Thank you.
hey, I have every game and program for the Atari 8 bit 800 line-up. if you or anyone wants I could put it on a CD at no cost to you. I'll even include an emulator.
Trqnssgxvql wow! Really? Why would you do that for us for free?
Well Datasette. Read Error. Please reboot xD
I had this many times :D
Там же магнитофонах можно было сделать режим турбо загрузки
I never used cassette on my 600. Only catridge.
Oh man, you missed a lot ;D

compare loading screen if this to the xbox logo loading screen.

I got asleep view the video loading game. Use raspberry man.
And my Blueooth MOD: ruclips.net/video/owTifXgOfss/видео.html
Dude. Even RUclips editor had a basic trim function! Slice out that load time, or at least provide commentary!
I wanted to show how long games used to load.
I don't comment my videos, since there are billions of channels with people talking.
Bah...this is a good representation of what it was like to load from tape. I was a Tandy Color Computer owner since age 6 and I waited a half hour for a program to load...just to watch a globe spin on screen!
