  • I had the chance to get this fascinating footage when I was at the A&P Tyne yard on business. I worked for Liebherr Cranes at the time and we were servicing a crane on ship "Orelia" in the dry dock.
I was allowed to film and in hindsight I wish I had got more footage and explored more.
I hope you enjoy this short film as much as I do. Let me know what you think.

I worked there for 20 years and would have been there when you shot the video. I was a Plater, I left soon after the yard closed after we had been transferred to Hebburn Dry Docks. It wasn't the same once i had left Wallsend Dry Docks. Brings back memories..

freaking awesome! cheers scammell, this is proper mega, makes you realise *JUST* how much has gone in recent years, all the Hawthorn leslie cranes, the drawing office, the clocktower, all the swan hunter cranes, and now there isn't ever a single ship in sight on that part of the river, not even a crappy fishing boat, nought :(

Can’t thank you enough for posting this. I was probably in there somewhere when you were recording this. I wonder if I spotted you lol. Images I thought were gone forever. I think this was my last year there, and it was never the same after leaving. Thank you so much!!!!!

Glad you enjoyed it. I’m so pleased I took that footage. The river isn’t the same now. I miss all the cranes too.

That’s crazy. I worked on the Mearsk too. I was a scaffolders labourer. I probably screamed and shouted with you to get my lifts on first. I miss them good natured arguments with the crane drivers with everyone threatening to kill each other, then drinking a pint at lunch in the Ship or Carville. You might remember my dad Jimmy Paice (scaffolders chargehand/Foreman). He sadly passed last year, but I know working in the yards were the best times of his life.

@TheGudge102 Thanks for your comments, I will never forget those few days I spent there, it was fascinating and I am absolutely gutted all this is gone now. I loved the rail mounted coles crane that was pottering around the internal railway when I was there too.
