I liked your energy and positivity!! From an ARMY, I’m glad you enjoyed the album !!
One thing I wanna say is that BTS are a “pop” group but they definitely do every single genre. They actually started with hip-hop, which their first four albums are full of, until they expanded their sound, but until this day, their stuff still is based in hip-hop yet includes all elements. They’ve said in interviews that their music is a genre of its own, “The genre is BTS,” they’ve said, and it’s very true!!

Their music is way more deeper than you could ever even guess...there are psychologists who have analyzed their lyrics and have even written books on it. Their message of self love is based primarily on Carl Jung's Jungian psychology, and even he has given an interview about it. People often don't pay much attention to the actual message and the lyrics, but if you do, you'll be overwhelmed. The symbolism hidden in their music videos are just, phenomenal. Every little thing has a meaning behind it, and it makes it more interesting. You'll never regret falling into their blackhole

bts has broken several barriers for kpop and that of a boy band in general, so limiting them to kpop doesn't do enough justice. they constantly break out of genres and are hugely involved in their music which is not common for normal kpop groups. they are so much more than a kpop group. i hope that we can see them as normal artists rather than assigning a whole 'genre' to them.

it was actually in english and he was going to include it in his own mixtape . but when the members heard the song they wanted to include it in the album . so he had to translate it from english to korean.

    What makes BTS beyond Kpop?
They don't rely on their hefty dance moves nor aesthetic MVs with visually stimulating concepts as what most Kpop bands do every single time to seduce their fans. BTS talks about societal problems, rigid school systems, conflicts between generations, mental problems, self-love, youth, losing innocence, and temptations the situation that the whole Kpop community is trying to avoid. Before I became a BTS stan I was already into Kpop, because something flashy and colorful was new to me but as I dug deep into the genre I kept on looking for more and I didn't know what quality I was looking for, then BTS came and showed me sincerity. BTS broke the monopoly of elite companies in Kpop, their humble background is just the icing on the cake.

Btw most ppl don't consider BTS as kpop. If you listen to their discography, you'll realize that they're very different from kpop groups and even boybands in general . They basically take the best of the Korean music and the best western music to make their own "bts-esque" music. So good.

  • @KRYONart
    @KRYONart 4 года назад +56

One thing you need to realize with BTS is that they like to experiment with sounds so you’ll find cross genre sounding songs. They help produce their own songs especially with the writing as majority of their songs are natural expressions of what they’re feeling/experiencing/expressing relating to their lives with the hopes that each message of their songs can relate to their listeners. The reason why they didn’t really stick to one genre (aside from the fact that kpop sounds usually also is a cross between hiphop-edm-rnb) is that they got criticized for debuting as a hiphop group, underground rappers criticized 2 members who used to be underground rappers for joining an idol group (boy band) and not “resisting temptation” because in Korea idol songs (kpop songs) and idol industry (kpop) are looked down on. They really started experimenting around their HYYH era where they shockingly came out with fresh sounds compared from their past albums. All in all, if you have a preferred genre I guarantee you you can find a specific BTS song you will like :)

First, I Wonder whether you’ve listened to BLACK SWAN? That song would represent their mature sound, just prior to this album. Do watch the live performance (late late show with James Corden, or the MV). You should also check out the ORCHESTRAL version of the song they made for the ART FILM. The song is built around this quote by Martha Graham, “The dancer dies twice, the first time when he stops dancing.” By then, you will realise that BTS is NOT your typical k-pop group.
Secondly, since you came to know them via Dynamite, which is their first song totally in English, you would be missing out on one of their remarkable strengths as lyricists. To sample what I mean, check out FAKE LOVE MV, paying attention to the lyrics subs.
Thirdly, if you haven’t already, check out their NPR tiny desk concert, and you will hear their sound with a LIVE BAND: 3 songs back to back, introducing you to 2 of their classics, Save Me and Spring Day.

Kpop is not pop. It’s just a way used by western media to block songs from other countries get into mainstream music. And that’s why there is Latin music, kpop, etc. but not US music or UK music. Just because the music came from Korea, it is not necessarily pop! There are all genres of groups that are broadly defined as kpop by the western media. Kpop literally stands for Korean pop and the ones who categorise it as kpop are Koreans themselves, not Western media. The term has existed for a long time, it came after the term 'jpop'. Most kpop uses elements from different genres like BTS but its still pop music.

definitely check out the lyrics for this album, their lyrics are always so personal and meaningful. This album's message was geared towards the global pandemic and the mental struggles many of us encountered/encountering during it. The central message is that Life will go on we have to remember to pick ourselves up so we can get through it. you can find lyric translations to all the songs on genius :) i honestly cried to Blue & Grey...
But fun fact! This was a heavily self directed album! although they members have written/composed & produced many songs in previous projects this is their brain child.
Blue & Grey was composed and mainly produced by the member called V (vocalist). V was also the photo visual project manager. he had a heavy hand in the promotional concept photos for this album.
Telepathy was mainly produced by SUGA (rapper). He was also involved in the production of the physical Album Jacket. The album not only contains the CD but also photobooks of concept photoshoots and other materials for the ARMY.
Dis-ease was mainly produced by Jhope (rapper). He also took on the main choreographer role. Traditionally his role in the group is Main Dancer.
Stay was mainly produced by Jungkook(vocalist). He is also the Video Project manager and is the director of Life Goes On music video.
Jin and Jimin (Both vocalists) were both the general Music Production Manager
RM's (rapper) had the general producer role and was involved in the production every song except dynamite.

bts has many different styles of music! They've dabbled in everything from rap, RnB, edm, pop, rock, etc. so they quite literally have something for everyone!
The reason BTS is so popular is because of their lyrics and messages, they are very personal and authentic, talking about mental health, politics, bullying, self esteem, growing up, etc. (I actually wrote a whole thesis for my senior year research paper on their lyrical messaging). Their biggest draw is their music and lyrics, but they also have super amazing live performances and music videos.

They actually have a running cinematic storyline running through many of their videos that fans are still trying to piece together
References to political events, literature, art, philosophy, etc can also be found in their music and videos.
If you'd like something in that vein Id recommend the music video for "Spring Day" as well as the explanation video for it. Spring Day is actually protest art and was released in a pretty tumultuous time in Korean Politics so some fans at the time were even worried BTS would be blacklisted for releasing that video. Then the Korean president was impeached and replaced with the current one (president Moon) who loves bts which is kind of a cool fun fact.
yeah,, they're definitely not shy about speaking up for what they believe in during times of distress when it could get them backlash but that's what I love them for.

In the same vein of political music I'd also recommend Baepsae and the explanation video from DKDKTV, and spinebreaker which also has an explanation video by DKDKTV .
Both Beaspsae and Spinebreaker about socio-economics and the generational wealth gap between the old and young. Another song similar is GOGO which is a political satire about how society and capitalism creates an environment in which teens and young adults are consumed by consumerism, from the perspective of those teens and young adults.
BTS's LYRICISM tends to be really thought out a beautiful. They create the most expressive metaphors for fear and loneliness, of looking into the mirror and not recognizing yourself, they're some of the more in-depth lyricists in both the western and eastern music industry right now. Not many artists are willing to get as personal as to explain to the audience their feelings of despair and sadness,
“my determined ambition sharpened my sword every day, but it gets dulled by my irresistible greed . . . ripped by reality, my crimson blood gets shed, I didn’t think my greed would become a horn that calls upon hell” (“Boy Meets Evil”, BTS)

"The world is another name for despair, my height is another diameter of the earth, I carry happiness and worries . . . I want to be free, I want to be free from freedom because now I am happy, yet unhappy” (“Reflection”, BTS).
whoo got a little heavy there MOVING ON.

BTS also have some videos with AMAZING cinematography, I'd recommend Fake Love, Idol, Blood Sweat & tears

Did I mention bts also has a hand in writing, producing, and composing all their music? They do, you can even check the writing credits on KOMCA
also calling them kpop is a bit ,, how do i say this? inaccurate. They are a korean group, but honestly their music has evolved outside of the typical "genre" of kpop by so much and they've broken so many molds of the kpop industry that many people don't consider them kpop, especially in Korea where the general population consider them as breaking the kpop/idol stereotype.
That being said, BTS fans aka ARMY usually do not consider themselves kpop fans, as most army have little to no interest in other groups outside of BTS.
"kpop has a formula, BTS does not"
BTS's treatment from by kpop industry was so bad, BTS have been trying to separate themselves from it for the last couple years,
only a little bit ago, one of the members said in an interview that they dont consider their genre as kpop and rather "their genre is BTS"
hope the information presented here was helpful and informing abt bts and the kpop industry, and sorry for this essay as a comment, but I hope this information will inform future bts reactions and helped you understand bts as a unique musical phenomenon and not just "a K-pop boyband" because they are so much more than that to to many people :)

Hi, some things about this boys.
*Bts Is south Korean group, this days people prefer don't mix them with kpop.
Kpop ist a genre and bts are know for their great repertoire of genres.
Kpop is an industry in Korea, and not all singers/rappers/musicians in Korea are "kpop"
    1. They are 7, 4 vocalist, 3 rappers (2 underground rappers) all dancers
    2. Bts compose and produce in all their albums, so is very personal, they talk about mental health, politics, society, their fans, self love, etc
    3. They have a story behind their videos so is difficult to new people understand, we (the armys) used to read a books and study set, philosophy, psychology and mythology to understand. Their last album for example was "map of the soul: 7" and is inspired by the psychologist book the map of the soul by Murray.
    4. The army love them because they are good people who through a lot of bad things to be where they are now, and even being famous they stay humble.
    5. They have a lot of genres but their base is very hiphop / rap. Also you can find subtitles in every possible language thanks to the fans, u only need to search with the name of the song or Activate cc.
**Bts always present themselves as a Korean group, and always said they don't want to be labeled in a genre or industry. The fans also do not want to be mixed with kpopers, (most of us aren't kpop fans) we don't have the same ideals.

Hi! I don't know if anyone managed it yet but the one you heard singing at 6:22 is Taehyung he is known as bts' barotone (don't know if I spelled correctly) he is really into jazz. The guy you mentioned after that is Jungkook he's the power vocal, our vocal king. Also the innocent voice you mentioned is Jimin he has quite a unique tone to his voice sometimes he's even mistaken as a girl for how high his voice sometimes get. I'm really happy seeing your open-minded approach and your positive comments! also sorry if we overwhelm you with our enthusiasm, we tend to jump onto people when we think they could possibly really like our boys so I hope we don't scare you away. so happy you enjoyed them :) Bts has a very large discography since they have been around for a while, and they have experimented with _a lot_ of genres (all amazing). They are very involved with their craft, specially in this comeback where it was pretty much all self produced: the songs, promotional pictures, concept, music video (the youngest member Jungkook directed it).
people you pointed out through the video:
3:57 "innocent" voice is Jimin, his tone is trully unique and beautiful, very sweet sounding
6:25 this is V, his voice has a very smokey deep quality to it (idk if it makes sence lol), very soulful and beautiful
6:31 and this is Jungkook, he is the lead vocalist of the group and just tends to excel at anything he puts his mind into overall. his voice is very breathy and also very beautiful
to answer your question, there are three rappers in the group (and four vocalists). I highly encourage you to watch more of them, you'll be even more shocked haha, this is just a fraction of their talent. You should also read the lyrics and watch some of their music videos, they think of every detail (they care a lot for their art) so it is all very high quality and worth checking out :)

I was so curious to see your reaction to Telepathy and Dis-ease, my personal two faves. And you did not disappoint! Fun fact someone might or might not have mentioned: Telepathy, Dis-ease and Stay are each mainly produced by 3 different members (Telepathy - Suga, Dis-ease - JHope, Stay - Jungkook). Each of the 7 members are also credited in the whole album at least once for different parts (producing, composing, lyrics).
If you want to have some eye-candy performance wise, there were two pretty big award shows in Korea last week (MMA and MAMA), where they performed Dynamite and other songs (= Life Goes On, ON) and it was absolutely glorious.
    Happy listening!

The one you said “tone sounds very innocent” is Jimin lead singer and main dancer in BTS. If u dive more into BTS you’ll see Jimin ain’t that innocent. Jimin is king of duality. He is my ultimate bias in kpop. Jimin has my favorite voice in the world. His voice is so beautiful, angelic, soft, smooth, and soothing but he can also have an attractive sexy tone. His voice pops out so much. Overall I love them all. All their voices complement each other.

Great reaction! Im happy you enjoyed this album and appreciate their voices and diversity. Personally this album really made me cry when looking at the lyrics and meaning of the album. Bts wanted to give us comfort and happiness with this album especially during the covid pandemic. They're talking about the struggles and sadness they go through by not being able to see us(fans) its really sweet of them! Be may referes to the covid pandemic but it mainly talks about life struggles everyone gets, burnouts, mental breakdown and how we should just go with it and try to make the best out of it and appreciate the good things that we still experience (life goes on haha) Anyways Be really helps me through hard times as their lyrics and stories genuinely relates to anyone who is struggling right now. Its the fact that they are personally experiencing this that makes their message really special, its not just this and that for marketing but their genuine feelings theyre expressing and trying to comfort us with it. They mainly produced this album themselves (as well as the mv of life goes on was directed by jungkook) and you can definitely see that as how emotional this album is but also motivating. I hope it makes sense what im saying here but basically bts is really precious for genuinely caring so much for us and their humbleness to always credit the fans love and support that made them being able to heal from their struggles and problems. Bts is known for them trying to spread positivity and hope through their music and you can see they do it well and really affected us listeners, seeing how successful they are now and the amount of support they receive. They also always want to show their love and appreciation to army by writing songs about them and trying to help us as well as mentioning us. Anyways if you want more song suggestions their entire love yourself era is very good. There are three albums for this : Love yourself: her, love yourself: tear, love yourself: answer. They all have special meanings. If you go through all of these albums you see its a journey to us loving ourselves which is really interesting. Their album wings is really good too (personally one of my favourite albums so far), after that the hyyh trilogy albums. This is comepletely different from lys. Their songs in there are very soft, diverse, rock, rnb indie type rather than pop-ish,diverse. Its hard to explain the story since its really ALOT but it shows us about the boys coping with loss, struggles, death and the meaning of life. This leads to the love yourself era as it already implies with the message but this era shows a dark and sad side of the struggles while lys era giving us hope and motivation if you understand, anyways im hoping you would like to take a listen to these im looking forward it!

Every album is so different when it comes to BTS, so I hope you can enjoy some of their older music as well as some of their solo works! I would recommend the video BTS crash-course 2020 by Suga and Spice as that video has a pretty good breakdown of the eras of BTS’ music over the past 7 years and may help you determine where you want to go next. My personal suggestion would be the album “WINGS” as that was the first time they had solo songs for all 7 members on the album that really represent either the members themselves (example: Yoongi’s “First Love” about music) or their character in the storyline of their music videos (example: Taehyung’s “Stigma”). I think it’s a good starting off point since it gives you insight into how different each members style is, so it may help you understand how those styles come together in the entire group/how they combine in sub-unit songs (songs with a few members but not all seven).

Awww u look like so much fun! Thanks for your reaction I'm glad you enjoyed the album. Bts isn't really a one genre group and not quite the best group to get a good understanding of the kpop sound. You'll find that the top 5 groups in the industry don't always follow the typical kpop sound. BTS in particular as the top bird don't follow it at all. They have music that's solid kpop of course but most of the time they're off just doing their own thing or what they call 'BTS genre'.

Man, I really had a good laugh with ur final comments on the album, l mean, BTS is indeed still experimenting with new sounds and genres, but that's just how their music is. It's not fair to call their music 'pop' or think about them while thinking about past popular boy bands. You will be so surprised by their discography, my friend, and their lyrics, of course.
BTS have amazing lyricists, the members themselves lmao, so I strongly recommend reading translations.
For BE, BTS wanted to comfort their fans 'Army' with an album that is healing so the songs here progress from sad and longing to happy and cheerful, that makes sense, right? 'Life goes on' is the single with an MV for a reason and the album conveys that message perfectly.

If you go through their previous albums, you will see mostly are written by the rap line (RM, Suga and J-Hope), with few song written by the vocal line. But mostly are produced by their team of producers who worked with them since debut.
If you start from the beginning, you will see how much they have improved in their music production.
BTS are well know as lyricists, their songs may seem talking about love but at the same time have other meanings and messages, not about love.
BTS are very diverse, if you search for other groups, you will find yourself figuring out the gerne of each group, but with BTS, you will never know what they put out next.
I became ARMY during Love Yourself era, that is the album I love dearly.
But a lot of armys became ARMY during The Most Beautiful Moment in Life era and Wing era, both of those albums are beautiful too. Very different from BE.
Also this year they dropped Map of the Soul 7 album, that album also have high quality songs.
Their earliest debut songs are all hip hop, mostly about the feeling of you.g people towards the real world at that time.
If you search their earliest songs, you will never believe those 7 kids are the same 7 men you see right now.

BTS can definitely do BIG and INTENSE, but this album was made with the purpose of remembrance and relativity rather than big impact. They wanted to tell us how these times have affected them just like everyone else in the world, and to remind us that it won't always be like this, it will get better. The title track explains the purpose exceptionally well. Life goes on, and you can even hear it as the album goes on, the first half of the album feels mellow but hopeful, and toward the latter half it picks up, signaling a change for the better that is bound to come eventually. Then the last song closes off the album perfectly, reminding us that while the world might change, the bond between us won't, no matter how long we're kept apart.
