JJ Burrnel made the Stranglers with his distinctive bass line gutter sound . I was lucky to see them live in the early days in the pubs. I will never forget being by the stage when JJ Burnel first played "Peach's".
I always thought the four (IV) on Rattus stood for Intra Veinous. But that was my thing at thé time apart only from The Stranglers. I am still obsessed with them all these years later. I am only pissed off that I never got to see them WITH HUGH. Seen them with Baz (and whilst Dave was still here, than Fuck) and although i prefer Hugh Era Stranglers, they were still most fuckin excellent live. Long live Hugh, and best of health to him. 🖤😎
Thanks for posting this. Was great to see the "Old Codger," again. Although ain't we all now. I was 14 when Rattus was released and a mates brother copied it on a cassette, the tape wore out eventually! Finally got to see them live for the Raven tour. 18 and earning enough for concert tickets I think it was something silly like £2.10 or £2.30. Never missed a London concert after, until we moved north in the late 90's. Have loved every iteration of The Stranglers but do miss Hugh strutting his stuff. My daughter brought me his autobiography, signed copy. To this day I haven't read the last chapter. I was at the ally pally concert and Hugh left that night. Still love them and thank them all! For making my adolesence a rocking one.
As a 15 year old I went to see the Stranglers at the Brighton Conference Centre (yes we used to creep in)..I think it was during their Black&White album..JJ jumped down right in front of me and I was terrified that I'd done something wrong and he'd clobber me one..what a show that I'll never forget... The Black&White album came with a black LP and a white EP..I have them both somewhere but I didn't look after my records as a kid
He really did make the stranglers, his wit, dark humour, fantastic voice, and just his sheer presence, his guitar playing and songwriting, outstanding, sorry baz no disrespect to you, trying to follow someone like hugh, impossible
Thank you for uploading this, Hugh Cornwell is a great guitarist, very under rated. Some of his albums outside the Stranglers are excellent too, Nosferatu has to be one of the best. Great to hear this stuff.
Yes , you're absolutely right , he excluded it and went straight to Wolf's 'decadence' . . . . how decadent Perhaps it's too beat driven & led (?) . . . . Robert Williams , who also totally dueted the entire 'NOSFERATU' , except 'built the wrong way' which featured Ian Dury & 'rhythmic itch' which featured DEVO's Mark Mothersbaugh !! Shame . . . . 'Big Bug' would have been so topical & is a masterpiece . . . (about Trotsky's Train) ruclips.net/video/jDW8cpsvqAw/видео.html better late than never ! Well noticed , Paul !
Don't know who's memory has disappeared, mine or Hugh's. He said No More Heroes album came out 18 months after Rattus. My memory is that Black and White came out 13 months after Rattus!
his voice was still v.good here but some of the changes he makes to the songs sounds like a crazy person, not in a good way, I know he has good music in him still somewhere
One of the greatest frontmen of one of the greatest bands of all time 👍🇦🇺
Spot on ...50 years n still strangling other bands . ..
Absolute LEGEND.....way too underrated nowadays

Beautiful, haunting and moving. I'll buy a ticket 🎟 for the 10th of November after watching this. The Belfast poet Andrew Beattie ❣️
Great playing, great lyrics and songs, I, along with many will miss him more than Elvis, a remarkable man
Muito obrigado Mr. Hugh Cornwell. And for Vilar de Mouros - Minho - Portugal - 1982! I was 18 yars Old.
Brilliant...one of the coolest musicians of his time...great song writer...
Lots of people slag off the album "10" but I think it's brilliant. Its full of great songs.
Love that album. The b sides too.
I saw hugh in essex many years ago and it was quite an intimate gig. probably no more than 100 of us there. One of our best song writers

The Stranglers weren't the Stranglers without Hugh.
All of them, together, made The Stranglers. No Stranglers without DG or JB, or, of course HC....and yes....JJ too.
You lucky man.

Wow. Have never seen this. Being American and loving The Stranglers/Cornwell is a rare treat. The sound on this is epic.

Very distinctive, unique and original.
The best thing from the so-called punk generation was this guy.
No competition.
Seriously underated for his solo work,he has more songwriting talent than most of the new wave/punk people of that time.
I totally agree with you both. I hope i get to see him one day.🖤
Frank Zappa was critical of many things musical, especially punk and new wave. But he liked the Stranglers. That's quite an endorsement.

A man doing what he clearly loves. Very cool. Voice has lasted well also!
I would bet Hugh is a musical influence on Frank Black of The Pixies.
This is awesome - when was it recorded?
December 2013.
