    The "i" is treated as a coordinate axis; it's basically a vector equation like 3(x-hat)-4(y-hat), even though it's in scalar form. If you think about it, this is the only sensible way to treat addtion and subtraction between real and complex numbers, because complex numbers don't exist anywhere on the real number line, and vice versa.

    math is a universal language, the truth of all physical things. without it, we would have nothing

    Wow! Absolute value LITERALLY means the distance from zero? And we could just LITERALLY set up a right triangle to think about it visually? And I can LITERALLY just take each part of the expression and just square it?? And here I was thinking about all that in the figurative sense. No wonder I'm no good at math!

      I know I'm 4 years too late to respond to this, but you summed up my thoughts well haha.

      Bruh in our class we literally were just told by our teacher that the absolute value is just “positive it” but thank god uncle sal is here

    Don't worry, it's like a universal habit in Tumblr to hate math. This person's not alone, and they're just missing out on how beautiful the art of mathematics is.

    So in other words, the absolute value of a complex number is the hypotenuse of the complex number and (0,0) ?

    So I won't have to take the fact that one of the lengths is on the imaginary plane? When I started watching my guess was that abs(3-4i) == sqrt(3^2 + 4i^2), but it seems like I can remove the imaginary part completely?

    I have a hard time understanding how the absolute value can be a real number when the point on y-axis is n*i units away from the origin while on the x-axis it is a real number of units away from the origin, I just don't understand how they can be added together to give a distance when they are two completely different things, can someone please explain?

    Math is the thing that lets you post those not very smart comments, because you use an apparatus to surf on the internet that would never been able to been built without math.

    Wait, so how can two dimensional complex numbers have their absolute value equal to the 2 dimensional real numbers?

    • @SeanWaters1120
      @SeanWaters1120 2 месяца назад

      Because an absolute value is just the length from the origin.
