for anyone watching this video who are thinking about a gretsch but not sure it's for you, definitely try one out if you can. they are a lot more versatile than you may think. i just recently bought a gretsch electromatic G5422T with the blacktop humbuckers and love it i have to say. i was looking for a guitar completely different from any that i have previously owned and the gretsch definitely fills that spot being both semi acoustic and with a bigsby. i love my guitar i have to say. i don't play any rockabilly or country music (not that i don't like either genre i must add just that i am not good enough lol) but i love how i can get some shimmering clean sounds (especially with some reverb and delay). the bigsby trem is great for adding some subtle vibrato to the sound. when you want to add some gain though the guitar sounds great too though ( i just bought a blackstar core 20 stereo amp and it sounds great through it) it is a very versatile guitar imho and i loves mine :-)
I remember my old G5120, the first guitar I bought for myself, as I was inspired by Billy Duffy of the Cult at the time (and yes, I know he plays White Falcons, not something similar to the G5120.) Sadly, I got a helluva lemon with sharp fret ends, a scratchy tone knob, a Bigsby that kept flipping open, and loose tuners; I got rid of it after about 8 months. Glad that Gretch stepped up the quality of the Electromatic line.
Great video! I was able to play one of these at a music shop. It certainly has a great tone and practically played itself. I am definitely purchasing one.
I just got one of these on a trade and it IS easy to play. I never was a big Gretsch guy but I'm impressed with it. It sounds really good and it is versatile.
I received one of these, brand new, for free because a family friend died before he could touch it. It's beautiful, sturdy, and sounds amazing. And he is correct, this guitar is versatile for all music. I play punk, reggae, blues, anything from it. I have a strat, and I prefer to grab this gretsch instead, crank the overdrive, and thrash some metallica any day!
My korean made 5120 is made as nice as a usa one. The Korean made guitars are amazing quality. I did replace the pickups with gold dynasonics. Unreal! I did it because the guitar was worth it. My go to axe for surf, rockabilly, and country.
This foam that all you people are so anxious for him to remove is actually factory installed double stick tape to attach the bridge to the body. This allows the bridge to be moved and placed where desired for intonation and other factors. Gretsch players been doing this for years.
Ive got a black one, it's amazing, I gig with it every week and it's rock solid, sounds amazing and is eye catching, although I noticed the new ones in the shop I go to have had their pickups changed and I don't think they are as good as the older ones.
own it love it!! very well made beautiful sound. use it in praise and worship at church, but also does quite nicely with my vox ad30vt to emulate beatles sounds.
One tone that he didn't use that simply kills is a nice OD through a Fender Blackface or Tweed type amp. Simply kills for some nice, fat, touch sensitive, warm rock and roll sounds. I never used mine much with distortion, per se (save that for the semihollow types like the G5435), but loved it with a nice drive.
Geoff, its the perfect guitar for you. But try and get the older one with the double pickups rather than the humbuckers. The same as he's got. It looks brilliant and sounds amazing.
LOL! He forgot to remove the plastic protector under the bridge that the factory put on to prevent the bridge from scratching the top finish. While there is still sound transmission possible through the protector foam, it deadens some of the treble response of the strings .."guitar stays in tune really well"..LOL..don't use the whammy bar on the Bigsby too much then.
... 02/16/2020: I have a Gretsch Electromatic 5120, which I love, except for one feature. The 3-way toggle switch clicks real loud when switching each position. Is there a quick fix for that noise without changing the toggle switch? If not, what brand of toggle switch would be silent?
If you want to buy a both a new electric and a steelstring acoustic, would this make a good compromise? Any hollowbody in general i mean :) Volume isnt important on the acoustic part as it's only for me in my sofa or out in the sun ;)
It´s orange. a friend of mine has the same guitar, an it really has kind of a redish colour to it... I have a G5120 electromatic of the first series they made, and the orange is really orange ;-)
what colour is this? I played one in a store and it looked like this colour, but on the website, it says it only comes in orange, black, and sunburst. This one looks a little more red than the orange though or is it just me? Thanks!
how thick is the neck on that guitar. I have the Joe Pass model in red. the neck on that guitar is very thick and it's hard to do any thing fancy on the Joe Pass guitar. I'm looking for a good guitar with a thinner neck so it would be easier for shredding.
I'm thinking of buying one of this but a used one for $450 at guitar center, what are the musts to check on the guitar to make sure everything is good prior to purchase?
İn my 50 some years of playing I never understood why some people prefer the Fendies or the Gibbies when there was always a Gretsch around ay around same prices... :)))
Hey, I'm looking for a decent guitar for me as i'm starting college soon, would you recomend this? I'm a grade four acoustic but I just prefer rhythm. I'm into alot of blues & rock and should be getting in a band through college. I've seen this guitar for about £512 in white, but its an extra £80 for it in black, do you think I should get one?
Remove the foam from under your bridge. My dream was to have a Gretsch one day. I keep putting it off until one day I bought a Gretsch Corvette solid body. The stupid Bigsby is like grits down south they come with every thing. My Gretsch Corvette II is the biggest piece of shit I ever had fall apart in my hands. It too was $700 bucks. I couldn't give this turde away. That was my dream guitar and I had to live with it for weeks. It is gone by way of an even trade for a Jay Turner that was about $200'bucks.
Whats he talking about, more styles of music other than grunge ??? Does not compute !!! Country maybe he means playing Grunge in another country, yeah that's it and blues oh playing grunge when your depressed, oh yeah but rockabilly ahahaha yes guys named William that rock out playing grunge- got it !

This review was actually pretty fantastic. Gearwire, you've stepped it up. Love this guitar, and the playing was quite nice

Seriously...a cool review. The guy is not too talkative, and gives a straightforward review. Thanks! Just bought one of these guitars yesterday!
Great video! I was able to play one of these at a music shop. It certainly has a great tone and practically played itself. I am definitely purchasing one.

Mine is the aspen green and i LOVE THAT GREAT GRETSCH SOUND!! thanks for the vid!
Post a video with the Aspen green. Thinking of going for that color
Well...regretfully, due to some financial strains, that Gretsch was sold to GC awhile back. I still have my Streamliner in torino green which i love!
Great guitar and great playing!
I bought one after seeing this vid a while back ago
My korean made 5120 is made as nice as a usa one. The Korean made guitars are amazing quality. I did replace the pickups with gold dynasonics. Unreal! I did it because the guitar was worth it. My go to axe for surf, rockabilly, and country.
Excellent démo, thank you for this cool test
@Nathanmullins95 - yes. i just picked one up about a week ago. i've tuned it once since i got it. just played it tonight and it's still in tune
@CharlieTecno THANK YOU! I remember hearing that as a child with my mom on KKSF!

Kudos for Take Five!!

How are these guitars with a little overdrive?
nice review! I just bought one for my christmas present to myself. sounds and looks so pretty. classic looks and style. reminds me of a 57 chevy.
Awesome thanks for a great review! I may get one.
own it love it!! very well made beautiful sound. use it in praise and worship at church, but also does quite nicely with my vox ad30vt to emulate beatles sounds.
Wow, a reviewer who can actually play guitar. I have LITERALLY never seen that before.
I love that you played Take Five!
thanks dude good looking out.
Nevermind, Matt Davidson's reply sent me on the track to discovery. It's "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck.
Saw them play that live!
great review and great guitar
does the bridge move or is it fixed ? i'm guessing not Filter Tron pickups ? Thanks !
It moves , so’s you can intonate it, pickups are shite, I put filtertrons in mine.
@@phil393 yeah i've heard this before about the pickups , bummer, so seems like right off the bat you gotta put money into it, Peace
Nice review buddy
Geoff, its the perfect guitar for you. But try and get the older one with the double pickups rather than the humbuckers. The same as he's got.
It looks brilliant and sounds amazing.
Its called "Take 5" by Dave Brubeck. A jazz standard.
@romdanish i test drove the gretch and the ibanez. the gretch has a much fuller, smokier tone than the ibanez. well worth the money
I just checked out this video because I thought u weren't wearing a shirt
I agree if you drop 800 bucks for any guitar the dealer should give you some sort of a case.
wow, dude didn't even take the foam out from under the bridge...
@CleverNameHere81 Take Five, it's an standard jazz
very nice!
thank you very much :)
Congrats on being the only one on queerwire who can play and knows what they're talking about!
Does the guitar stay in tune after you use the whammy bar?
LOL! He forgot to remove the plastic protector under the bridge that the factory put
on to prevent the bridge from scratching the top finish. While there is still sound transmission possible through the protector foam, it deadens some of the treble
response of the strings .."guitar stays in tune really well"..LOL..don't use the whammy
bar on the Bigsby too much then.
Why doesn't my guitar sound that good? Probably cos I can't play.
willy wonka I like to tell myself "it's not how your play, it's what you pay"
thats a wonderful gitter, dudes
thank you

What's the first thing he plays? I've been playing a lick like that for years and I don't know what it's from.

Man, that sounds good, YOU can use a StringRay to restring that bad-boy!
I'm thinking of buying one of this but a used one for $450 at guitar center, what are the musts to check on the guitar to make sure everything is good prior to purchase?
so when you buy this guitar, do the sellers just expect you to walk out with it just how it is? no box? bag? case?
Sounds pretty good...especially considering that you're demoing it with a wad of styrofoam under the bridge!
İn my 50 some years of playing I never understood why some people prefer the Fendies or the Gibbies when there was always a Gretsch around ay around same prices... :)))

Really does sound twangier than Gibson or Vox hollowbodies. Can this handle psychedelic rock?
whats the name of intro song
please, any tab about the intro of the video?
any regular disortion pedal im guessing
anyone know the name of the song being played in the intro?
what distortion pedal was that for the homme sound?
Would you say that the Peavy Rockingham can match this guitar soundwise?
You forgot to take off the paper under the bridge ! It will sound much better :)
What amp are you using in this video? At the beginning, I heard that Chet Atkins sound that I've been chasing for over a decade.
Adam Greenwell tone is in the fingers. ;)
“It can play country” starts playing CAKE
No it is foam placed there by the factory.
what pedal did he use to get that josh homme tone?
wich one is best, the 5120 or 5122 ?
What's the riff you're playing in the very beginning of this video? It sounds familiar but I can't put my finger on it!
what song did he play at 2:53? anybody know?
what is played at the beginning of the vid?
Anyone know the song at 2:53?
whats the name off the song at 2:54 ?
is this on a clean amp ? no effects ?
What are you running it through? Looks like a Fender Mustang
Woulda thought it's Buddy Holly (or similar) at first listen, not sure though...
Me to,
Can someone please tab this intro
What is the tune at 2:53 ?
Soaking up all that 240p goodness 😂
What's the name of the song played at 3:00 please?
take 5
Distortion sounds bad and don't like the effect ,want to hear that pickup in a solid
I'm really bummed it wasn't Seth Rogan's voice when he started talking.
@CleverNameHere81 Dave Brubeck - take five
Dug your version of Take Five
It was awesome. Check out jazz great George Benson's version- blows your mind!
Remove the foam from under your bridge. My dream was to have a Gretsch one day. I keep putting it off until one day I bought a Gretsch Corvette solid body. Within the space of one hour, your username turned from Thom Yorke to Charles Manson. Because what's the difference?
:)) 5/4 is tricky
foam!!!!
Well then, tell this guy about resonate transfer and sustain bucko! Around 9 minutes.
