Just an excellent presentation. So refreshing to get the clear tones and so well and precisely played. Nothing more useless than reviews that show only the distorted tones that can be achieved with just about any decent guitar and give absolutely no idea of what the guitar actually sounds like.
🔵 got myself a beautiful used G5120T in black one month ago - loved it so much , became an instant Gretsch fan after ignoring them the past forty years whilst strictly playing acoustic guitar ; two weeks after the G5120T , got myself a brand new G5622T in walnut stain w/Hilo'trons ❕😏
Shit - I get teary eyed listening to Richard Barrets playing very similar to the Allman Brothers mellow songs. His playing is the most beautiful expression of why I love the sounds electric guitars make - especially Gretsch ones. beautiful sounds - beautiful playing!!! Thank you Richard for the time it must have taken you to be such a pro on your instrument!!
excellent demo man...Guitarist always gets such a nice tone (and it certainly doesn't hurt to have tasty players such as yourself at the helm). I picked up a Fairlane Blue 5420T recently and absolutely fell in love with it...I've been playing mainly Strats and Les Pauls for years, and can't believe I've been denying myself that lovely Gretsch sound!
Completely agree. I have the G5422TG going through a Vox VT40X modelling amp using slight reverb and I get fantastic tones, both clean and distorted, with this set up
I must have listened to this about 40 + times.... the warmth is just unparalleled..... Always wanted one, but now, I will get one for my studio downstairs. Thank you Richard !
Gretsch in my opinion offers the best low to mid price range guitars. You get so much bang for you buck with those things and the build quality is always fantastic. I tried out a streamliner g2622 the other day and it blew me away. Just as good as some of my expensive guitars and maybe even better than one or two.
This is a fantastic demo. Can you share some info about the track creation? For example, did you record the backing into a looper or Digitech Trio, and then solo over the top, or create a full mix in the computer?
Hi Phil, thanks for the feedback! Working with Martin (who records and produces these videos) I'll come up with a riff/chord idea, while he programs some drums to suit. Then I'll go for a proper 'take' on the rhythm guitar to set the structure and overdub solos and some bass - sometimes in that order! Martin then mixes/masters/edits the shots - which are always from live takes, so no pressure 😀
I really consider buying the G5420T it looks so beautiful and I loooove that sound. I'm not really into jazz at all, so I really appreciate your demo which shows that Gretsch guitars can be used for other styles than jazz. Your playing style is very cool. (y)
Excellent review (which I'm a little late to!). I have the G5420TG 135th Anniversary model. What Richard didn't mention is the pinned bridge on these, which makes a big difference in stopping the bridge skating around if, like me, you use light gauge strings and can get a bit 'enthusiastic'.
great upload! i have one of the pro jet series a 5435 chambered LP looking type i like it it a lot and a very versatile guitar, wish i could play like you , tho great tone on your guitars
Yes, a wonderful demo video, not only of your soothing, skilful playing Richard, but the guitars are extraordinary in craftsmanship and sound... I think these sound quite a lot nicer than their centerblock cousins, but what I am afraid of is the supposed feedback I would get.... I play in a cover band and am looking for a sound like this for my soft latiny jazz songs, but these guitars look like they could rock out as well, but at what volume need I be concerned for feedback... venues are basically bars, restaurants, parties etc ... any advice or suggestions from anybody would be most helpful... I have always played strats, les pauls and my wonderful old PRS artist, and other solid bodies, but am searching for a smoky sound like these beauties produce (with a nudge for your wonderful playing too Richard :) my favourite of these two is the G5422TG mm mm mm!
Not many players left like you, Christopher Walken Doppelganger,Jackson Browne is one of your menthors, right? Just bought T 5420tg had to change the machine heads and bridge, otherwise its a toss up between my Strat and the Gretsch. Fantastic playing ,thank you. :)
Great vid. Thx. My 5420T I can attest is a wonderful guitar. Did you mention a synthetic bone nut? Mine stays spot-on in tune right out of the box. Such a great solid feel and beautifully crafted. I feel like I’m holding a piece of history. I consider it the first ‘real’ guitar that I’ve ever owned. [Finally]. Well-worth saving up for one. If you can afford the Streamliner level models, I recommend that you be patient and save just a bit more and start at the 5420. While all Gretsch guitars are damn good, to me. there is a big difference in the sound and stability at the 5420 level. It will encourage and reward you to play. Cheers!
I have the 12 string version, first Gretsch I ever played in 45 years. Now I want the 6 string. Wife will probably file for a divorce. I'll miss her. :-(
I came here because I’m torn on which one to buy on payday. Now I’m really torn, but really want both....so now I have to decide which one to buy first.... The full blow chime of the blue one....but red with gold hardware...
Beautiful playing; excellent and very helpful commentary. Thank you, Richard! Please could you confirm the amp and gear you were playing through to get such a wonderful tone?
@@electricchurchmusic4298 these are the two guitars I can't choose between, if you could only have one which do you pick? Any differences that aren't immediately obvious? How's the tone differ? Any neck differences? Thanks!
The 5420T in Blue is a great guitar to upgrade with a B6C USA Bigsby, a roller bridge and Sperzl machines, a Hot Rod for a fraction of the price of a Japan one.
Nice playing ! Can't beat a gretsh and the price of these new additions is really good considering the thousands years gone past thanks for posting 👌👍🏴
Hi are these new electromatics still made in Korea? Which In my mind is a good guitar. Historically we know Korea puts out a good guitar. The scarf joint at the headstock has me wondering tho if these are Chinese guitars? Not that the scarf joint is a bad thing, but it's typically on a Chinese built guitar. I have an original 5120 and 5122 and I don't recall there being a scarf joint on the neck/headstock. I'm gonna look now tho because I'm curious. ;)
Hello, had 2 Starplayer tv duesenberg...finally sold and look for a new " bisby-guitar " ? Is a high grade guitar ? Worth for money ? Does it stay in tune ? Thanks for your answer, best regards from France
For this model, its a fantastic guitar for the money. But its not considered a high grade guitar, the Electromatic series is Gretsch's "affordable" line of guitars. It can detune somewhat easily.
yes and the previous models im lucky to have the Aspen Green from 2015 with secured bridge, plastic pickup bezels ,the biggest headstock with electromatic logo and yes the humpblock inlays.
so... this hasnt helped in my decision yet O_O propablyhave to listen to you playing a few more times. And a few more times more because you really play super beautiful. Thx for that! hmmmmm... i thinkwith the G5420T you hear the more volume of the body: darker, more low end and really a bit more on the acoustic side. The G5422TG sounds a bit tighter, loses some low end but propably is the better for more distorted stuff ...also more handy and easier to play in higher frets. Hmmmm... thats really dificult, jesus.
Thank you for the great demo. Does the G5420T really have a center block that extends to the bridge? I was under the impression that the bridge was simply pinned to the top with no center block support underneath. If it does have a center block, do you think this has any effect on feedback control? I've been looking for a full sized hollowbody and this might be perfect.
Sheraton has a centre block and the 5422 is hollow body, so very different guitars. If using high gain I’d go Sheraton due to feedback. Low gain and cleans then the 5422. Both very different sounding though.
Hi! I think there are a few ways it could be named, as it contains the 6th, major 7th and the 9th - so I'll hedge my bets and call it Emaj69. It's easy to play though - open 6th and bar all the others at the 11th fret, plus the 2nd string at the 12th fret. I like that chord too 😀
You know what is funny? The video I was watching before this one had a guy playing rockabilly and this chord showed up. It sounds completely different with overdrive, I prefer this clean.
With the assistance of a Bass Player (for the Root of the Chord) you could do almost the same chord on the 12th fret Harmonics (with the exception of of a #11 in the place Fifth, making it more Lydian) on the A-D-G-B-E Strings with an 'F' Bass note.
Just an excellent presentation. So refreshing to get the clear tones and so well and precisely played. Nothing more useless than reviews that show only the distorted tones that can be achieved with just about any decent guitar and give absolutely no idea of what the guitar actually sounds like.
Too true! Also, Gretsch clean tone is legendary.
Seeing this video again and again for 4 years only to hear this melody. Lovely...

Amazing playing, showcasing these guitars beautifully. I keep coming back to this video.
My God that is the tone I have been searching for! Wow!
what amp is this ? the tone is also my kind of tone !
Once you go Gretsch, you'll never go back! I use a fender champion 40 set on classic voice plus reverb for this tone.
I have a Gretsch in my collection, I just love playing it through all styles
Great sound from the 5422TG. Tasteful playing too.

Wow that Fairline Blue is stunning!
Value for money and a fun playing guitar, and a beauty. A winner on either quality alone, but having all qualities makes it a must have.
Beautiful showcase of a beautiful instrument!

Saving up for this guitar. I have been looking for the perfect semi-hollow for year when I played this at a music store. Definitely the one!
Jthomas Annillo these are full hollow bodies.

Killer tones and very tasteful playing!
Beautiful, loved them both! But I thought the thinner body sounded a tad nicer, bit tighter sounding.
Wouldn't kick either out of bed! ;oP
Loved the sound of the thinner body and the colour of the thicker one 😀
Such beautiful, melodic playing! You are simply fabulous sir!
Great demo, with actual playing!
Such impressive beauties!!!!!! Definitively on my priority list for 2017!!!!
