Chavez performed the best he could at that time, but Chavez had not had a serious challenge since fighting Meldrick Taylor in March 1990. During that stretch, Chavez started drinking heavily and went through a divorce with his wife because of his alcoholism. Chavez was not the same fighter that fought Meldrick Taylor, but Pernell Whitaker won their fight and he deserved to get the W on his record over Chavez. Whitaker had some extra motivation in the fight, to avenge his good buddy Taylor's controversial loss to Chavez.

@@kakashihatake6176 Can't agree with Pernell on the Chavez fight, I rate Whitaker very highly but he was allowed to get away with a lot of spoiling against Chavez. The bottom line is this: you can’t tilt the deck for one fighter over another just because the ref is allowing him to get away with it. The “dice” was on Whitaker to win with the bookies, the ref’s were picked to favor Whitaker, Chavez had to come up to 147 which all he could muster was 142 lbs even at 31 yrs of age, and a ref who would allow Whitaker to use bush league tactics throughout the match to offset the rhythm of Chavez and cadence of the bout. Cortez even allowed Whitaker to shove him after receiving a warning. What did Cortez do? Just said, “Hey! Knock it off.”. It was that bad. Whitaker was hitting low all night, not just the 4th and 6th. He received I think 11 warnings from Cortez if I recall. Not a single point was taken. Anyone who understands boxing knows how low blows, hitting on breaks, etc, etc., tilts the deck in favor of the one doing it. Chavez did win the 1sr, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 12. In my opinion Chavez did win the 6 round where the low blows took place, In the 6th round, the round was pretty even then the low blows started. After the low blows , on angry Chavez landed a huge right hand that launched Whitaker back into the ropes, I thought that sequence change that close round for Chavez Mickey Vann says that him and the Swiss judge both gave round 12 to Chavez because he landed more and all Whitaker did was run. He disagrees with the Texan judge giving the 12 to Whitaker. He says had the Texan judge given the 12 to Chavez like the other 2 judges, it would have been a draw in all 3 scorecards. And the 6th round with the low blow, judge mickey Vann says that all Whitaker did was hit low blows to Chavez, so he wasn't going to award the 6th to Whitaker on low blows George Benton said he told Meldrick Taylor to hit Chavez on the hips to disrupt his rhythm in their fight in 1990 and for sure his gameplan with Pernell was along similar lines, difference being Whitaker was a brilliant defensive fighter and naturally awkward. He was a nightmare to fight, particularly for a precise well-balanced combination puncher like Chavez. The idea put across by many, including the commentators and most the print media that Whitaker outfought Chavez is laughable. The plan was to irritate, frustrate, foul and keep him from getting set. It worked. And let's be honest here that he is fouling, a lot. I'm not talking about the low blows that Chavez always gets dogged on by the announcers (yes, he does hit low) - though Whitaker lands plenty of them here - but the excessive crouching so his head at times is level with Chavez' waistband, and also the holding and wrestling, sometimes maneuvering himself so he's behind Chavez. It's ridiculous. 50% of Whitaker's game in this fight is was is called "spoiling", when lesser fighters do it. I watched this fight live and it was incredibly disappointing - the fight to determine P4P no.1 did not live up to its billing. And that wasn't just down to the "bad" verdict or Chavez looking far from his usual invincible self, it was Whitaker's tactics. They were effective, no doubt but he shouldn't have been allowed to get away with some of the stuff he was pulling in there. Whitaker certainly didn’t dictate the pace. That was Chavez. You Whitaker fans won’t even give that no-brainer observation to Chavez lol! Chavez also, to his credit, was landing many body shots on Whitaker that seem to escape recognition from people who watch the fight. Chavez was also not getting hit as often as it looked. Whitaker did land some good clean shots to both head and body of Chavez but mixed in a lot of low blows and illegal activity such as hitting in the back, the hip, and even hit Chavez’ ass once. He hit after the bell and did a lot of mauling. Whitaker basically pulled every bush league tactic or trick from his bag he had in order to get an ugly “perceived win” over an aged and dated Chavez despite the record of Chavez. I think Whitaker fans should be thankful that Joe Cortez allowed Whitaker to fight his fight. Chavez was really in a no-win position. Forget about the score cards. Judges decided that each man fought their heart out. Each one moved, and worked like they needed to, and neither truly overwhelmed the other. Sweet Pea moved beautifully in there. Danced around that ring like it was prom night. Chavez threw some of the hardest punches I'd seen the man throw in his life. Landing beautifully, though he was fighting an uphill battle against a brick wall. Something seemed wrong though. PW just kept going and going. He was the energizer bunny. Did JCC lose his power? Maybe that was it for him, but no, the news came out. After the fight PW had to go to the hospital. It turns out that JCC's punches were hitting as hard as ever, and Sweet Pea's broken ribs proved it. You have to give PW credit. His tenacity to keep on going until the end, with broken ribs, and move like nothing was bothering him... except for the probability that the broken ribs he suffered weren't bothering him due to the cocaine found in his system at the hospital while getting his ribs mended. The commissioner had to step in and change the ruling though right? Nah, they let it slide. What's done is done, and it's possible that he did coke right after the fight, and on the way to hospital. So no, they just left it as is. Then some time later, a few months short of 5 years from this fight, Sweet Pea was in another amazing match up. He was fighting an amazing contender, Andrey Pestriaev. He went in there and also put on an amazing show. The man seemed to never slow down. He was ruled the winner, by decision. Again, he needed to go to the hospital. During his time there, guess what they found in this system? Well I'll be damned... it was Cocaine. Again. Only this time the commissioner did step in. They stripped PW of his win and ruled the fight a "No Contest". Still not fair, but "rules is rules" and they didn't overturn it to make it a loss, as they should have with the Chavez fight due to similar circumstances. Now, this makes one wonder. How many times did Sweet Pea fight while high on coke? Did it make him a better fighter? That is debatable. I mean the man was impaired and doing beautifully in the ring, but was taking shots that should have put him down for good. If he fought this well while high on coke, imagine what he could have done sober. Just think of that for a second, he fought impaired and danced around like nothing in the world could stop him. Actually nothing in the world could stop him, because of the coke. He may have actually danced around, and fought much better without the drugs in his system, but would he have been able to keep up the stamina levels? Would he have been able to endure all those punches? He may very well have been able to do so, but in my opinioin, my perspective, no. Maybe would have never been caught by the same kinds of punches that he was hit with. I'm sure having the coke in his system prevented him from being afraid of the punches and he walked right into them, or didn't avoid them, because.... well, because he wasn't feeling them. Why move? In the end though, we'll never truly know what he could have done. Time is no one's friend and lost opportunities will never be more than that, lost opportunities. Anyhow, this is neither here, nor now; all that PW showed is that cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Even if he tried to teach his fighters to be like him it would not happen because you can't teach speed along with awareness, instinct and agility all working at the same time.

Did he happen to mention why he ducked Chavez since 1987, and when asked when they'd fight Chavez, Duva and Whitaker said "when the time is right"? Because I find it odd that Chavez was ranked 1 PFP in the world for years, and called out Whitaker for years, but they didn't want any of that smoke until 1994 once Chavedz was having marital problems, a drug addict and drunk? Or was it just convenient timing? Then did he talk about all of those flagrant, and intentional low blows he landed, and got away with, without losing one point? All of that matters to you know.
He should have fought JCC from 1989 to 91 when Chavez team was hounding Duva and Pea for the fight. They ran from the fight and took on Chavez at a weird catchweight of 145 and 2 years too late. Blame Duva.

Pernell Whitaker , 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊
Tbf the fight should have happened 3 years earlier at 135/140 not at 147lb when Chavez did *not* belong at that weight.
Rounds 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, are clearly, so clear for JC Chávez. Rounds 3, 7, 8, 11, so clear for Whitaker. Rounds 4, 10, and 12, are for me even, you can say whatever you want. I have to say that 12 round, Whitaker was holding all the time, and add too that Whitake throw 2 big low blows.
Whitaker, elusive, tecnician, good defensive, making points, Chavez, chasing, throwin to the body, hitting hard. Difficult fight, for me was for Chávez by 1 point.
I would have loved to have seen him vs Floyd
My favorite fighter and athlete of all time.
Ask him if he hands down won the tito fight tho🤷🏽♂️
Past his prime.
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Sweat pea reminds me of Floyd Patterson. I think a sweet pea would’ve regained the title from Chavez. Just like Floyd Patterson went on to knock out Ingemar Johansson to be the first person to regain the title
Great man
RIP
Blame Duva.
Lol ridiculous!!!
Chavez ducked pernell for years .... and got his ass whopped when they fought
@@chrismale9976 Sure. Three years too late and at a weight JCC had no business in.

Chavez’s won 🥇
Craziest shit I ever heard from a trainer😂 I’m not teaching them how to be agile like me
Rip Champion..
Wow.. cant believe a car could hit him.. best boxers in the world couldnt hit him.. 😢
I tell people I think he could have beat Mayweather. One of my dream matches is Parnell vs Mayweather Jr
To be honest. With Chávez it was a Draw or maybe one point ahead. But everyone has a different opinion.
It was defintely a close fight. I can't say that Chavez won it, the only one who could claim that would be Whitaker. It defintely wasn't by a wide margin, though. I think the weight hurt Chavez, who only came in at 142, FIVE pounds under the limit, which shouts out that he was no Welterweight.

No hate bro. Hes a defensive genius and a fan. He won every fight except the Castillo fight. @mansamusa2012
You can tell he's been really affected here by the drugs he'd abused. He looks awful here but was a legendary fighter in his prime.

Pernell beat Julio unanimous decision and thats coming from a Chavez fan..
One of the most disgusting robberies I’ve ever seen.
🧊👀
The greatest! The Del A Hoya was a robbery!!!
Pernell didn't lose to chavez, he actually beat chavez , but the judges had it a draw.
In your mind maybe
@@FrankCarolei-lv6rb No PW gave chavez a boxing lesson and the judges had the audacity to call it a draw, in reality Pernell handed chavez his first loss.
Stip lying Whitaker lost he didn't defeat chave because if he did then why chavez didn't lose huh because chavez won

Yes he won that fight.
Felix Trinidad put him on his ass.!!
B-Hop returned the favor🎉🎉🎉
Yeah except that Whitaker ducked Chavez for7 YEARS, and even left his weight class, to avoid Chavez, which was a pussy move, because JCC was 1, Whitaker was 2 PFP. Yet They flat out, blatantly ducked Chavez, saying that they'd fight "when the time was right" Yeah, after Chavez was a drug addict, drunk and had marital problems... Sad and pathetic, not to mention that lowblow in the 6th round, just as Chavez was getting to him, to change the momentum of the fight. That was weak and He didn't deserve that win.
Because you ran you ran from Chaves and that’s why you lost
is not true
whittaker beat the shit out chavez

He's lieing told me to my face get this Olympics out the way. So I could make this money
