This reminds me of a time I needed an instrument voltage regulator. Yes, a long time ago. My big city dealer told me they had to remove the dash to get to it and they would need the car for a couple of days. As it happens, the next week I was working in a small town that had a dealer right down the street. They said they could get it done that day. When I went back to get my car, the presented me a bill for about $35. I told them I thought they had to remove the dash. They told me the book says that but you can just reach up and grab it if you were limber enough. The part was about $20 and they thought $15 was enough for labor. What great people!
Thanks! Just a BIG thanks for all the things I have learned from your channel... The braided ground cable was an easy fix on my 04 Silverado because you mentioned it so many times.. I really did not need the hassle of getting someone to fix it....
Just remember, If I can do it, you can ... ... no. No, I won't be doing it. I'd be reaching my frustration level about 10 minutes into the job and I'd be breaking stuff. Good job Mr. O.
My 2016 Ford Fusion SE 1.5L has had this same exact problem for 3 years. I've been driving it without defrost and floor vents the past 3 winters here in Kansas City Missouri and it hasn't been fun. This video is a God send. I'm going to tackle this project this weekend. Thank you for the video Eric O.
9:30 Channeling your inner Speedkar99, eh Mr. O? Since you entertained us with some dad jokes, I'll pay ya back with one. My car was in a fender bender last week, this week took it to the best body shop in town, Dr. Nick's Collision Shoppe. When i got there I asked Nick why they call him "Dr. Nick". He said it's because he's a "dent-ist" 🤣
I remember years ago my dad working on a car and most people lifted or dropped the engine to get to a bolt. My dad just removed the front wheel and drilled a hole through the inner guard, popped a socket on a long extension and was done. Plugged the hole with a rubber plug when finished. I also saw him use that on the transmission tunnel. Saved loads of time.
To get to one bolt on a Triumph TR6 to do a clutch job you would punch a hole in the tunnel and then cover it up with the rug. When one would come we'd always peel back the rug first to see if someone else had punched the hole. It seems the hole was always there! Kudos to your Dad. It really pays to have a few trick up your sleeve! 🙃🙂
Always nice to see Mrs. O. Engineer meeting: Question: We have this actuator. Where should we put it? Answer: Lets hide it deep in the dash board. Everyone: YEA! WHAT A GREAT IDEA.
You’re killing me with the jokes there Eric. Love the channel. You provide us viewers with great knowledge and insight, not to mention some fabulous humor. Keep on being you. Let’s not forget Mrs. O, she’s pretty great in her own right. The interaction between you both shows me the love you have for one another. No diagnosis needed.
The town siren is something I miss here. They disabled it a few years ago. This place has changed a whole lot since I was a kid. Years ago we used the siren as a clock, as it would sound off at noon and 5pm and it even alerted the VFD of a fire by sounding off in pulses.
Replace the ignition switch in my 03 Ram about 4 years ago with doorman and I've had good luck with it. It was only the fourth one that I had to try in there before I found a good one but I've had good luck with it. When I lived in Colville Washington they had the fire siren go off every day at noon
Matco just came out with a adjustable trim tool set just like the SK one, entire set with lifetime warranty is way cheaper then the one Eric is using! You can buy them individually also
I have been on this wild and wacky ride with you and the old sma channel from the very beginning and boy yiu sure have come a long way my guy. So many years and so many thousands of rusty crusty cars to today and you've become such a natural in front of the camera. You make alot of us guys days out here popop. We appreciate ya a bunch.......even though some of those outros are both hilarious and horrible. Lol Love ya Dr. O!
At granny's house, I grew up with the noon fire siren and near train tracks. Both are good memories, and I like the background noises. Glad you don't edit out all that stuff. It's part of life.
This is still the best auto repair channel on RUclips. I started watching somewhere around 300k subs and don't know why there aren't 2M. TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO SUB so they can have a good Christmas 🙂
Being an auto tool designer for 52 years, I love how he tells it like it is. I helped the big 3 avoid recalls many times over the years. Go Eric and Mrs.
A truck turned left in front of me 3 weeks after I bought my 2016 Fusion. Car was totaled, but all the safety equipment worked perfectly. It even used my phone to call 911. Best 3 week car I ever owned.
I had a 6 week car, I was driving to my annual physical when a man in a Honda Accord lost control coming onto the highway via a cloverleaf, crossed 3 lanes and t-boned me. I was driving a Suzuki Vitara and it rolled over. I remember cruising down the highway on my roof trying to steer my way out of it. I was a little sore after that but no major injuries.
Our VFW blew the siren every day at noon and six PM just to make sure it worked. If it blew at any other time, the volunteers came from home or their other jobs to man the trucks. I went to elementary school next door and several classroooms overlooked the fire station, so some days we had some extra entertainment.
Holy cow, this video made me appreciate my experience with having to replace the actuactor to the blend door of our '11 Prius...sorry you had to go through all that Eric 😢
My Mercury Milan had zero maintenance issues, right up until it was totaled by an idiot trying to turn left. Replaced it with a 2017 Escape, and it also has been zero issues.
Love the turbo sound. Pretty soon every vehicle you will be working on will have the tssh...tssh....turbo on them. My F150 has two of them. So double the tssh...tssh...turbo sound.😅
Great job on pulling the steering column. Like you, I have my fingers crossed that the Dorman product will have a long life. Great job on telling how you find out what to do and the sites that you use to get the information you need.
I was listening to the radio as I was putting new seats in my 04 Nissan F. I smacked the floor with a hammer tap tap BOOM!!!! All Air bags and seat belts INSTANT JUNK. Nissan service says that can happen. So say you. But the bag burn on my face says it can! 😊
This has to be the first time I can recall ever seeing the steering column removed on any of these RUclips repair videos!! But then again, as I get older I can’t remember to zip up my fly, so there is that🤔
I've actually had pretty good luck with the Dorman actuators. Had to replace a couple in my 16 dodge charger and they've lasted 6 or so years so far. Funny enough, that's longer than the or ones lasted in that car lol
I had the opposite problem on my 2007 Ranger, the A/C was cold in the defrost and floor vent, nothing from the dash. The first mechanic I took it to, where I had many repairs done in the past, said that the vent 'door' was controlled by a vacuum actuator--1930's tech!, but he fixed it and it worked for almost 2 years then happened again. This time the original mech. had moved on, and the new younger one had no idea about vacuum controlled devices and said I had to have the whole dash pulled and replace the faulty unit, and only Ford could do that. He estimated it would cost about $1500, but knowing dealers, I doubled that amount. By then the truck was 13 yrs. old and the repair was likely to cost more than the value, so I just traded it for a new Ranger and took the hit for "no A/C" in So Fla. I'm confident the new truck has minimal vac controls as almost everything is electronic. Looking forward to 15 trouble free years (yeah, I know!)
Tks Ricky, we are the age or same era so as always make me laugh when refering to kris kross yo make a jump jump jump and other stuff from when a was a kid !! Ciao from Montreal !!
We have those old air raid sirens here too. Once a month at 11am for testing, because of an oil refinery nearby. Huge explosion and fire one Monday when I was doing maintenance in a restaurant by myself since they were closed on Mondays. I wound up sheltering in place in the bar with free beer.
I just had to do the actuators on my daughters car and I took them apart to see what had failed. The only problem with them are the contacts for the swipes were worn through. They are designed to fail. It's really annoying because they could be a lot better for next to no money. The contact material is thinner than paper and it's brass. It's like they said... design it to fail in 3000 swipes or something.
I recently replaced the steering box on my Super Duty pickup. A friend of mine, who is a mechanic, told me very emphatically to be sure that steering wheel doesn't spin because of the clock spring. One more thing Eric: "Kris Kros will make you JUMP, JUMP." I'm about 15 years older than you; I was 28 when that song was out. GREAT VIDEO!
Even if some body panics and ordered new bolts either discontinued or on indefinite back order from ford. I like you find many times barely touch but no way to test replace and hope. NAPA Service solutions boxes wings of failure in a disguise
Take the drive gear out of the old actuator and save it for checking the blend doors next time you have one come in to check door function. Most Ford products use the same size on their blend doors.
No I can't do it! I don't know why you would want to get into those contorted positions to fix that. Send them to the dealers and let the young inexperienced guys do it. But that's me. You are the master and know your business better than me. Another great video, even from the floor point of view. Thanks.
When I was a kid the place I worked at had the noontime whistle too and when there was a fire call or any emergency call that whistle was a terrible thing especially having to talk with customers!!!LOL!!!
Another Hokey-Pokey Dad joke for ya Eric: The guy that wrote the Hokey-Pokey died. They had trouble getting him into his coffin. They kept putting his right foot in... you can guess the rest!
Btw, if you lose one of those torx mounting screws for the actuator, they are considered a specialty connector by Ford. P/N W705447-S437. $18 apiece (1 each) at your dealership! Using a substitute, you risk stripping out the plastic housing. Also, you can plug the power connector to the new module before you mount it, turn the igntion on, and press the applicable AC/Heater airflow position control so the white actuator gear key will pre-align to the proper position with the door.
I don't think the Dorman p;roduct will be the worry, that era of Fusion seems to have problemsome Evaporator cores, 2016 its just about due for that to leak. I am impressed you didn't break that small connector on the top of the steering column, that is hard to see until you break it. If only I would have seen your video before me playing like a kid with my column out and breaking the clock spring, ouch. Those Ford blend door actuators can be a challenge to remove sometimes, I had used the same tool to do mine. Great video, fingers crossed for you on the Dorman part longevity, I played the motorcraft song on that one!
Mr. O.: "...[SK] 6646, it is the adjustable trim clip tool. It is always on a forever back order...I now own three of them." Me: No wonder I can never get one, every time they make one, Mr. O. gets it! 😮🤣
That S&K 6640 has been back in stock on their website. I know of several people that have picked one up in the past several weeks. Pretty pricey though.
I’m just glad some college grad engineer was well compensated to piss off both mechanics and diy on a routine maintenance part(unless we go back to levers and cables that never failed).😮
Ford's mazda Ztech 2.2 was purhaps the most powerful 4 cylinder domestic car engine ever built. I know as I once owned the 2004 Ford Focus wagon SE. Nothing and I mean nothing could beat-it, the few times challenged.
Oh, the dad jokes. I was OK with the first one. But, when you did the gator and crock pot one I was actually screaming, "MRS O !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"..lol. Classic dad jokes from one of the great classic dad mechanics. I couldn't do that messing around the air bags. I've seen too many videos on here of dudes setting them off by accident. I was scared as a cat in a room full of rockers when I had to pull mine on my 05 Silverado to replace the dang steering wheel controls a while back. I would squint with each release button and every unplugged and plugged back wire. As we say in the south, "Couldn't drive a needle with a sledge hammer in my butt it was so puckered." LOL. Cheers.

Chrysler product?
Good people still exist!
@@larryfine4498 I’m pretty sure it was a Chevy Malibu.
I"m retired and never pay extra for any RUclips channel , but I enjoy watching SMA so much I"ll pay 3 bucks a month !😃

What makes Eric a killer mechanic is not his mechanical knowledge and all-around skills. It is an enormous amount of patience.
Gosh...this repair really just gave the "Step 1: Remove Dash and Whole Interior" vibes...nice repair job
Oh man.... No matter how many times you make the tsshh, tssshh turbo sound, it cracks me up every time... Regards
Right up there up with the “Chevy Thunder” phrase.
Dorman has the wings on the logo because if you replace too many parts with their products, you are going to need some angels watching over you.
😂
I thought because all their parts get flying lessons when they inevitably fail several days after you install them.
Makes me happy that I can afford to have some young mechanic to do that sort of work for me.
Eric, you are as always, entertaining and informative.
Love the frustration-free packaging Ford uses on the new steering column bolts!
Just another way for Ford to fleece their owners.
🤷🏼♂️😏

respect for napa or ford for delivering those 4 new steering bolts so quickly
I've been stuck on vent a couple times but my wife slaps me back into reality real quick. Works every time.
😅

Sounds like the old Chevy Monza with a V8 engine.
Always nice to see Mrs. O.

I love even the simple stuff. Gotta keep up on all of it. Best way I learn is repetition.
Look at the face on Eric O! He loves his wife soooo much Just tuning in for these moments is worth it! Sir, when is your next livestream? Thank you!
Man, video #4! I sure hope you’ve gotten a big one and it hasn’t been too warm to hunt so you are editing! Another great one Mr O, thank you, sir.
Dorman called and said "Thanks".
Eric, how you can work on Ford garbage takes a lot of courage. The patience of a Saint. Watch you all the time.
My Mercury Milan had zero maintenance issues, right up until it was totaled by an idiot trying to turn left. Replaced it with a 2017 Escape, and it also has been zero issues.
I work at a ford dealer so I know what you mean.
I enjoyed the video. I don’t know that I would be that flexible. Keep them coming!

Good thing I crossed my fingers for this one Eric O another perfect job done by SMA !!!!!
I did a heater core in my Daughters 2005 VW bug. Took 18 hrs taking the whole dash out. Should’ve taken it to the junk yard. But she is happy.
Eric O and Mrs O - we vote for you for president and First Lady
Love your videos! You are always through and do a nice meeting job on your repairs, very professional!

Always great and informative. And your t.t.t.t.turbo line made me laugh so hard . Thanks for the info and the laugh.
A very awesome lesson. Take care, thanks 😊
Easy Peasy
Glad I retired and left some gravy for your pleasure! Seriously, as we age you realize living under dashboards is rotten.
I recently replaced the steering box on my Super Duty pickup. A friend of mine, who is a mechanic, told me very emphatically to be sure that steering wheel doesn't spin because of the clock spring. Had a Jeep thermostats and plastic pipe unit to replace, dealer didn’t have. Got Dorman and it was metal!!! Fit right in fingers crossed 🤞
No I can't do it! I don't know why you would want to get into those contorted positions to fix that. Send them to the dealers and let the young inexperienced guys do it. But that's me. You are the master and know your business better than me. Another great video, even from the floor point of view. Thanks.
Some of us don't have the option of turning away money when it shows up at the door. Gotta take the good with the bad.
Isn't this where he trains Josh to do the contortion stuff.
Great job, very informative.
Good job as always!
Loved the Kriss Kross throwback....lol
Let us not forget Ford has issues with the smaller ecoboost 4cyl engines leaking coolant into the cylinders
When I was a bit younger I used to put a piece of tape on it to hold it up but the wife said it rubbed her the wrong way😅
Mr. O.: "...[SK] 6646, it is the adjustable trim clip tool. It is always on a forever back order...I now own three of them." Me: No wonder I can never get one, every time they make one, Mr. O. gets it! 😮🤣
I remember the good days when we did it all with a single vacuum line.
That was interesting thanks Eric!
Under the dash work, everyone's favorite yoga position.
Got the Crock Pot joke! I have a condo in Venice, FL just down the road from Rainman Ray. We have plenty of alligators in my our ponds.
Nice fix. I hope that Dorman product holds up for a while.
That is a lot of work!!
That S&K 6640 has been back in stock on their website. I know of several people that have picked one up in the past several weeks. Pretty pricey though.
The Doorman plant near Hatfield, PA, just outside of Philadelphia, had a 4 alarm fire today.
I’m just glad some college grad engineer was well compensated to piss off both mechanics and diy on a routine maintenance part(unless we go back to levers and cables that never failed).😮
You sir have the patience of Job..
Don't forget the Sitka gear, when you are looking Cool.
Good luck with the Dorman.
First Dorman actuator I've ever seen work. The 5V ref sensors usually go wonky.
FORD Thunder thanks for the video.

Nicely done 👍✅ all good.
If Mrs O becomes your camerawoman, there will probably be too much comedy for us to follow the job. But it would be very entertaining.
Another good one, thanks.
