    This debate is very old and not restricted to rap or hip-hop. Those of us old enough remember the song "Self Destruction" by the Stop the Violence Movement. If I remember correctly that was 1989, long before Trap and Drill. Video games, death metal and even Dixie Jazz sparked the same sort of moral outrage. The difference is the immersive nature of the media through which we consume these contents and the disintegrating context that feed on, and into the artistic expressions. The same sort of argument is going on with regards to the graphic violence in movies or video games and internet contents. Am not saying that rappers are not responsible for the garbage many spew out but we can't ignore the larger context of these events. We often discuss these things as though black people live in a cocoon by ourselves. Listen to many of these rappers and the main themes are all inspired by movies not the so called "streets". Biggie called himself the "black Frank White" for a reason. The basic imagery is all from the Hollywood depiction of the "National Crime Syndicate". Remember the name "Murder Inc"? Even the term and image of the "gangsta" is borrowed from the same imagery source. None of these influences are exclusively black or reflective of the lives of most black people in general. Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky are not black neither is the fictional Tony Montana. Besides this point, the image most rappers project is a soup cooked by the media department of record companies owned and controlled by other people. My point is that this is a complex issue that is difficult to understand if we focus too much on rappers or the clichés of pointless violence that is in American entertainment in general.

      That’s like saying “If Sony never advertised PlayStation, people would still own them”.
      I won’t sit here and go through the trickle down affect in changing history, had PlayStation originally only sold 20-30% of what they did. But you can make the connection in the difference of reaching out and instilling a self destructive ideology to the masses versus the percentage that are literally backed into a corner of developing that ideology naturally on some animalistic shit.

    • @larryconnerjr1835

      @@dlrowmotemoclew All you have to do is look at the crime rates in the 1970’s and 80’s before gangsta rap was even popular, I disagree with a lot of the content in rap music but I’ve never believed people commit crimes, sell drugs, gangbang or any other violent crime because of what music they listen too, I’ve always felt you can criticize rap music and other negative aspects of black culture , but ultimately humans are going to do what they want to do regardless of what entertainment they consume

    • @dlrowmotemoclew
      @dlrowmotemoclew Месяц назад

      @@larryconnerjr1835I have to wholeheartedly disagree with that. There’s tons of physiological experiments that shows that the behavior of humans can very easily be drastically affected by even the most minuscule amount of influence. Look at the Stanford prison experiment for example. But it’s not as cut and dry as saying someone is committing a crime solely because they listened to a song. It’s much deeper than that. But I can give a surface level example. I’m from New Orleans Louisiana. Gang culture has never been a prominent thing here. It’s always been about what ward you’re from. In Wayne’s prime, he suddenly started claiming blood. I was in high school at the time. I had a small outsider bit of knowledge about gang culture because I’m a huge fan of old school west coast music. So I was put off when immediately after Wayne started claiming blood, everyone around me out of NOWHERE were wearing red bandanas and claiming piru. Not a single one could’ve told you where the name even came from. I remember asking a few of my friends “Ight so. Remind me…who jumped you in?” Just as a joke. I used to mess with them all the time but it really grew into a huge thing. Now was there technically gang members in the city before hand? Of course. They’re everywhere but there isn’t or wasn’t a branch here, it was just not a thing. No one gaf about colors, no one threw gang signs, no one claimed blocks, searching for rivals to do a drive by on or none of that.
      We can both agree that rap music isn’t the root or main cause of crime and that crime in the black community would exist without it. I just find it extremely hard to believe that the way we treat or view each other wouldn’t be as sickening if it wasn’t for that influence.

    Music is a mantra and it can be very influential to the undeveloped mind. Remember the human brain doesn't fully develop until between the ages of 25 - 30. So, be cognizant of what you feed your mind. You might watch the same movie a few times a year but most people listen to the same songs daily.
