  • Saint Kitts and Nevis is located in Leeward island chain of the Lesser Antilles in Eastern Caribbean. This twin island country has two main islands, which are separated by a 3 km strait call narrows
    St. Kitts is an elongated oval, with a long, narrow peninsula in the southeast. It’s narrow coastal plain rises steeply into higher elevations. The island has a group of volcanic peaks. The highest peak, Mount Liamuiga ( at 1,156 m), a volcano with a mile-wide crater known as the “Giant’s Salad Bowl” because of lush green forest that cover the creator. The southern peninsula is mainly low hills and flat terrains, including large swamps and marshes.
    Nevis is almost circler island with cone shaped central volcanic peak, Nevis Peak (985 m). The island has a narrow coastal plain that rises gently into the upper elevations.
    Actually there is another uninhabited island that is part of this country it is located half-way between St. Kitts and Nevis, called Booby Island. It is breeding ground for many birds.
    Two larger seasonal rivers are the Wingfield and Cayon Rivers, they flow almost to the Caribbean
    The Great Salt Pond, is the only larger lake.
    Both island has ring road around the whole island, making it easier to explore the islands.
    Brimstone Hill Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
    Saint Kitts and Nevis is divided into 14 parishes. 9 of them are in Saint Kitts and 5 in Nevis. Basseterre is the capital city and the largest city, although Charlestown is considered as the Capital of Nevis as it is the largest town on the island.
    St. Kitts and Nevis is the smallest country the Americas with the populations of about 53,000, about 41, 000 live in St. Kitts; they are called Kittitian and 12, 000 live in Nevis and called Nevisian. Most people live in small towns on the outer edges of both islands. Basseterre population about 14,000

    History
    Ciboney people believe to have been in these islands as early as 3000 BC, we don’t know much about them, Then the piece loving Taínos came to the island about 1000 BC and Caribs invaded them about 800 AD.
    Christopher Columbus, saw and named the islands on his second voyage. Saint Kitts San Jorge (Saint George) and Nevis San Martin (sighted on Saint Martin's Day). Spanish didn’t start the settlement, The British establish their first Caribbean colony on St Kitts in 1623, French came into the Island guns blazing and captured part of the island in 1625.
    Caribs were willing to share the island with English in the beginning but as the European population increased and started to exploit the island's natural resources, the native Caribs started a fight, so the Europeans decided to resolve issue by killing over 2000 Caribs in the place now known as Bloody Point
    In 1627, the English & French split the island, English controlled the middle and the French controlled the ends
    1628 - The British establish a colony on Nevis.
    European population continue to increase. Plantation were developed and slaves were brought into work.
    1629 Spain raided the is islands and destroyed the English and French colonies, after some wheeling and dealing Spanish recognized British claim of the island.
    1776, St. Kitts was the richest British colony per capita with the population of 10,000. 9,000 of them are African slave.
    After few wars, France relinquishes claims on St Kitts in 1783.
    Slavery ended in 1834. 8,815 in Nevis and 19,780 in St. Kitts were freed
    So many natural disasters struck the island between 1835 - 1854, sugar prices went down .Island population decreased. Then came the World War followed by Great depression.
    Working class was unhappy with the situation and started to rebel, A Labor Party was formed in 1932 and the campaign for independence started. 1967, the islands became an self-governing member of Britain with Labour Party leader Robert Bradshaw as prime minister.
    1983 - St Kitts and Nevis jointly attain independence within the British Commonwealth with Kennedy Simmonds as prime minister. Initially after the independence, countries political climate was unsettling, and Nevis wanted independence. The last referendum held 1998 fails to meet the two-thirds majority. The 21 century see more economic development.

    A nice well rounded information about this lovely gem in the Eastern Caribbean however the music is tacky it must go. You need a nice modern beat that goes well with the beautiful tour and history of the nation.

    The Coat-of-Arms is incorrect - in the placement of the motto. 'Country' is on the left of the banner and 'above self' is on the right - there is much more detail and variety in the colours too

    Wasn't Anguilla once part of St. Kitts and Nevis? How is the infrastructure, whether sewer system, water and electricity supply??

    • @GeographyNuts
      @GeographyNuts  Год назад

      Yes Anguilla was. They are self sufficient in producing electricity but most come from diesel generators. They are water scarce, much of the fresh water comes from rain. According to latest UN report municipal sewage is generally stored in septic tanks. Hope this helps

      @@GeographyNuts Fascinating....such a small political entity that yet has do much appeal. I think I would pick St Kitts to visit first in the Caribbean as long as it's easy to walk around without alot of hilly streets and sidewalks.

    Isn't there a risk of a CBI passport because of the risk of dangerous hurricanes that could threaten the investment in the infrastructure??

    • @GeographyNuts
      @GeographyNuts  Год назад +1

      I am not an expert on this. There is definitely a risk but major hurricane that destroy the all the property is rare, Building fallow strict standard to minimize the impact. Most people invest money to get passport, not necessary to make money.

    • @dovygoodguy1296
      @dovygoodguy1296 Год назад +1

      @@GeographyNuts Yes, that makes sense, but if you do invest in property I guess that risk exists. On the other hand is there always a risk that the USA or EU will do something to ruin the legitimacy of the CBI passports?
