It really shows that seniority in an industry doesn't mean that someone is better. Jerry Goldsmith seems to have viewed it as just another job while Tangerine Dream put their souls into it. No offense to Goldsmith. I wish so badly we could get a Tangerine Dream director's cut
Fun fact - William Friedkin stated that if he had heard the music of Tangerine Dream earlier, he would have had them do the score for The Exorcist. He even had them do the score for his movie Sorcerer (1977)
Just wanted to say on the same day you posted this that this is one of my favorite movies and I love all versions of it! I wish to the name of God that an endless feature film reboot serious would be done for it!
I will always love the TD soundtrack. Jerry Goldsmith is amazing, but I actually felt it was way too serious considering this is a very cliche fairy tale. Favorite movie ever. ❤❤ Thank you for making this!!!!! Also..it's totally ridiculous, but this scene (TD version) makes me cry everytime I watch it.
Exactly! IMO, something about the Goldsmith version sounds generic and uninspired, with many songs sounding the same. Tangerine Dream's soundtrack is surreal and dream-like with every song sounding unique. It honestly seems like they tried much harder than Goldsmith.
In my opinion, both scores are excellent, but I prefer Tangertine Dream. Jerry Goldsmith's version is pretty but with a movie, pretty music isn't enough. The music has to be original and it has to stick in your mind even after you're finished watching the movie. To me, that's Tangerine Dream. Also, I prefer the American Cut version because it's more concise and has a better ending. This is my own opinion!!!.
I like the director's cut, but I hate the music. I hope it's not disrespectful to say, but Jerry Goldsmith seemed to treat it as just another job, putting minimal effort into the score. Tangerine Dream took it as one of their chances to put themselves on the map and did their hardest to make the soundtrack itself a character. If there's one thing I want, other than the original cut of the film in its entirely before Ridley Scott threw away a lot of the film, it's the current director's cut with the tangerine dream music. This scene makes me cry every time I see it with the tangerine dream score. The Jerry Goldsmith score doesn't seem to understand the emotions having in the scene, showing elements of fear. However, the Tangerine Dream score tells us exactly what Jack is felling and what the unicorn is feeling, with intense feelings of sorrow. Jerry Goldsmith adds an element of "what if the unicorn will attack him", but I really don't see that presented here. The Tangerine Dream scene shows that the unicorn is lamenting her loved one, Jack blames himself for its death, and he apologizes through tears and contemplates his mistake.
The TD soundtrack just adds so much more heft to the film. It’s pure musical fantasy. That’s why it works so well

Risky business has a epic score too
I prefer the Tangerine dream soundtrack it feels ethereal and otherworldly.
