Framing human trafficking around this very specific topic of sexual exploitation is really really dangerous, another reason why Timothy Ballard is so insidious. Most human trafficking is NOT sexual exploitation but LABOUR exploitation. People being forced to work in sweat-shops or on fields or in domestic jobs. You may see a house cleaner or nanny or even live-in nurse and not realise that they are victims of human trafficking if you only see it framed in this very sensational way. It makes the more common cases of human trafficking go unnoticed.
I don't know the stats of how much is labor trafficking vs how much is sex trafficking, but listening to the first half I kept going, "Y'all know that adults get trafficked, too, right?"
@@kimberlybega8271fast fashion survives only due to human labor trafficking. Third world manufacturers build dorms on campus and turn them into labor camps where people are not free to leave. You can't just "get another job" and there is no social safety net and they're financially unable to immigrate. The poor in the 1st world are forced to need fast fashion - indirectly feeding human trafficking by both creating demand and spending money on fast fashion. Then they're shamed for not buying the more expensive products they cannot afford if they complain how exploitative the industry is.
Can't win!
@@DeconstructingDeeJayGee Wow, thank you for this extra information!
AND child sex trafficking in the states is much much MUCH more likely to happen due to someone the child knows: like family members/guardians or family friends.
IMHO it's very telling that stories about sexual specific exploitation pull all the focus. If I try to think about it compassionately, perhaps people find it more horrifying and therefore it gets their attention, or perhaps nonsexual labor abuses under capitalism are so common that we're all desensitized to it. A more cynical view would be the old adage that "sex sells".
when my mom's friend sent her a link to this movie, the first thing she did was walk into my room, point her screen at me, and say "is this propoganda? the cover looks like the other propoganda you showed me about"
so proud of her lol ❤
Damn I wish I could get through to the people in my life like that. I'm so happy for you guys. ❤

Good job!
X to doubt
An older friend sent me a message because they were offering free tickets. She is a saver/couponer, so I blame the money saving opportunity. But it was a "No, thank you" from me.
1:22:34 there’s a reason they focus on younger children instead of teens who make up more of the demographic of trafficking. Because those kids are still innocent, still below the age of accountability. Teens make bad choices and deserve what they get-in these people’s minds. Even if all the kid did was wear immodest clothing.
I also hate how returning the kid to their parents is how to solve the problem *dusts hands*. And that’s that. Like the parents aren’t also dealing with guilt and horrible feelings about what happened, if they didn’t traffic the child. But it’s best to ignore the fact that it’s more often someone close to the child. Or that the child may not ever be taken from the home at all.
I used to work in a pediatric psychiatric hospital and had several teens who had been sold into trafficking by their mothers. They were “allowed” to do it up to 5 times before they lost custody. I never found out if there was an actual rule or guideline but mothers who did it 4 times always got the kids back.
Also, having talked to therapists treating these kids in family therapy, the other reason Christian Conservatives focus on pre-teens is that once a girl who has had her period is assaulted then she’s considered too damaged physically and emotionally for decent good Christian men. That is the view more so of the mothers but they worked hard to teach it to their daughters.
I agree with you. I consider parents who abused their children or name of religion a kind of human trafficker. The biggest most recent example I can come up with is the Duggars. Jill Duggar had instant free daycare workers when she did the buddy system and passed her youngest at a certain age ( usually after the kid was around a year old) off to an older, usually female sibling to take care of.
@louhortonsculpture - Regarding your second paragraph: yeah, every major child pornography bust invariably turns up family exploiting their own kids on video … but the fundies have a major problem acknowledging that what many kids most need is to be removed from their immediate family and placed with saner distant family or even with family friends. Abuse nearly always begins at home, but to the fundies moms and dads are sacred, sooooo … what to do?? Well what to do, for the fundies, is to ignore that whole facet of child abuse!! Problem solved…? 🤷♂️
Especially teenage girls, because let's be real even "regular" men sexualize and victim blame teenage girls for assault
Movie theaters aren't required to host any specific movies, either.
Like, no theater owner in his right mind would choose to host a film, then purposefully sabotage the experience of that film so that no one buys tickets for it. That's such a stupid thing to think, it's baffling that any adult could actually think it's true.
I am a soon to be 63 year-old Catholic. And I am totally embarrassed by these people.
They absolutely do not represent my faith.
I’m pretty sure Jesus would say liars and grifters need not apply .
As usual, King James and the Reverend Jen knock it out of the park ❤
James, you mentioned Rod Dreher? I promise you that there’s a rabbit hole you need to enter. Make sure you bring your vape.
You're not a Catltholic! 😅 if you are then you're either an infiltrator or brainwashed by the Novus Ordo New World Order modernists that call themselves ' Catholic'. No self respecting Catholic would use King James over Douay Rheims...
Why don't u educate yourself on the case of Jimmy Savile, a proud Catholic who received a papal knighthood. Reality is- the Catholic Church has covered up horrible abuse within the church for hundreds of years.
I'm very sorry that this may all come as shock, but denial this late in the game is inexcusable & is a reflection of your poor critical thinking skills.
The amount of condescension that oozes from the average Catholic is vile, especially with all the glaring history of normalized violence & perversion by the Vatican & it's parishes around the world.
The pope came to Canada last yr to apologize to Indigenous communities for all the disgusting historical abuses done by the Catholic Church.
Nevertheless, the events in the movie. REALLY HAPPENED
My maternal grandparents are Catholic (and said grandpa is a deacon) and they are the most accepting and loving people I know. It’s such a beautiful thing to get to see other good Christians who actually live by Jesus’s teachings
I work at an AMC theatre and dealing with this movie has been WILD. We've gotten calls about us "cancelling showings" (they were sold out), and generally agitated sound of freedom viewers who had nowhere to put their pent up energy
Dude I work at AMC too and it even got on our towns Facebook page even though it’s a well known fact we have terrible AC
I saw the movie the same day I saw Barbie and Oppenheimer. Making me think what those theater employees must've been thinking about me! 😂
I’m sorry you’re having to endure this.
It was sold out but did the seats fill?
Dude there's a lady from North Carolina who targeted a movie theater and kept saying they were canceling shows of this movie. The manager and the company had to actually address it and say they were never any shows that were canceled of that movie and this lady continuously filming outside saying that they were turning people away from this movie was all made up
A real and actually ethical organization that stops child trafficking is Challenging Heights in Ghana. I went there to volunteer and honestly they are amazing! The founder escaped slavery when he was a young teenager and has built this huge miracle.
Thank you for the recommendation!
Oh wow! Thanks for sharing this. I love Ghana!
Thank you for sharing! I think this will be part of the solution, to spread the word about reputable organizations that address human trafficking.
Protect that man at all costs. After Venezuela it seems all good men are in danger. 😢
Why am I seeing scam bot here?
I studied human trafficking in the US in a college class, I would HIGHLY suggest the book "The Slave Next Door" as a source for understanding it.
The average sound of freedom viewer is incapable of reading
I’ll definitely check it out though
A book? Are you mad? I can only process information in the form of dank memes and videos shorter than 30s.
thank you for the recc! im always looking for new books. especially well researched ones about actual issues.
Do you mean "the Slave Across the Street" by Theresa Flores?

I've been working in the anti-trafficking field for several years now. You captured pretty much all of my thoughts and concerns surrounding Sound of Freedom. Thank you for your thoughtful research and insights! So important that we have the right information when looking to support anti-trafficking efforts.
Also, as someone who has participated in dozens of human trafficking operations, OUR's approach is beyond unethical and ineffective!
Would love a list of legitimate organizations!

As an actual movie nerd who goes to the theater all the time, I found the conspiracy stuff especially hilarious because they’re just describing normal things that happen all the time. Like I could do this myself, I went to see ninja turtles like a week ago and the subtitles malfunctioned so I couldn’t understand most of the dialogue… or maybe it’s a conspiracy and the government trying to hide the secret truth that giant turtles actually live in New York sewers!
These people aren’t exactly in touch with the real world. My local IMAX theater displayed a windows error screen more than once when previews would normally play
But there ARE giant turtles in New York, and I encountered the corpse of one of them in an Iowa Walmart!!! it was made of plush, but we know that's part of the SECRET AGENDA where child seks slaves in Cambodia are forced by the Rothschilds to put hot sauce in the turtles asses or something!!! *NINJA TURTLE DOWN!!!*
(Lol)
One of my worst movie going experiences was when I went to see Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (the second one) in IMAX. It was at a theater that was literally just the one IMAX screen and it was part of the zoo in my area. They’d use it to show like little 45 minute documentaries, but they’d also show like big Hollywood movies. Anyway, idk what happened, but I THINK the power went out because the projector stopped working and it suddenly got really hot in the auditorium and after like 15 minutes of waiting and nothing happening and like boiling alive, I was like “eh, fuck this” and left
There was one time my dad and I were watching the Hobbit Desolation of Smaug in IMAX 3D. One of the 3D projector lenses was out of alignment resulting in the effect being not as great as it could’ve been. So the projectionist announced he was turning the effect off. Tbh, it made the film so much more fun 😂
@whatthefoxsays1657 I believe you're on to something. A giant turtle like character who often speaks in our Senate has recently become tongue tied on two occasions.
Instead of talking about how Social Security which is paid for by a special tax on workers is making us go broke, he stood at the podium and said nothing. I suspect commies and socialists are silencing these turtles.
Never in my life would I have been convinced that the marketing behind poo-pourri, the chosen, and this wild “trafficking” movie were one in the same, let alone LDS, had it not come from James himself. Solid storytelling here! Glad you have your own segment here on Fundie Friday’s as I greatly appreciate your knowledge and way of laying things out!
My jaw dropped when I saw they were behind poo-pourri. Did not expect that.
I was absolutely shocked
@@flippantiesIt made me sad. Poo-pourri was so stupid, and so pure. The commercials were works of art. Now it’s all tainted.
@@mrjones2721And that British babe's accent was so HOT...
I felt the exact same. There are exactly two ad campaigns I've ever liked in my life -- Bones Coffee and Lumè. Shocked to the core.
The first woman talking about the mysterious theater in Pineville, NC “suddenly” not having AC is hilarious because I live in the area and that theater has been having maintenance issues for several months. It’s an old building that needs refurbishing. They’ve closed multiple times, with zero relation to Sound of Freedom. That same theater cancelled our showing of The Little Mermaid without notice and refunded our tickets because of similar issues. These people really grasping at straws 🤣
It really feels like they want to be a main character so bad sometimes
Thank You! I'm also in the area (let's face facts.. it's charlotte.. why didn't she say charlotte? But I digress..) It is an ridiculously old theater and last year they stopped a movie 30 minutes in because of AC issues and they offered us either a refund or tickets to come back for free. This QAnon fool likely just wanted to gain clout with fundies trying to ban children's books down in Fort Mill.
@@taylor6099 💯
yeah and like my house lost its AC back in like, May! To me it makes sense that a movie theater in the middle of this massive heatwave would losr AC bc theaters have a LOT of power being directed to the actual movie theaters and a lot of the times the power is being used all at once. the lobby is just way easier to power 🥴
Of the people I know, across the country, who saw The Barbie Movie opening weekend, the *majority* lost power or had major technical difficulties resulting in a refund or raincheck. Theaters lost a lot of revenue during the pandemic and now they’re behind on maintenance…or maybe there’s a conspiracy against Barbie, too! 😉
I spent this summer working at a movie theater, and the people who came to see sound of freedom were the absolute worst. These grown adults would leave bigger messes than children and had no respect for the fact that this was a public space. The ticket donations were an absolute mess to deal with. It was wild to see how detached these people were from regular society
Appalling. I’m sorry for you
I have a question if you’re able to answer. Since the tickets were “donated” directly to the studio, did the theaters ever make revenue off of said tickets? I know revenue typically comes from concession sales more so than movie sales, but did you see any of the money at all?
Like they never been to cinema for years?
And why are people saying movie theater more frequently now? Instead of cinema?
@@siewheilou399 bro we're American we never say cinema
My only reference point for this movie is that my mom’s friend tried to guilt her into seeing it, because it was a “deeply important movie about an important subject we all need to be more aware of.” It turned into a massive fight because my mom finds stories where children are hurt to be deeply upsetting, even borderline triggering. This is also a thing that most people know about her. She’s pretty firm on it. The friend tried to insist on it when my mom said no multiple times, until my mom just left the movie theater and came home. Then the SAME THING happened with a different friend a couple days later. And then a third friend tried to recommend it to her for similar reasons.
My mom ended up making a whole long Facebook post reminding people that she is a school social worker for a low-income school, and used to work in an adoption agency for teenagers, and is actually significantly more aware of the kinds of people that want to hurt children than most of the people trying to make her watch the movie. It was only then that any of them (just the first friend) apologized for totally crossing a boundary.
And then a week later this video and the You’re Wrong About episode dropped, and I told my mom she probably dodged a bullet if both of y’all found it content-worthy.
What pisses me off the most about these hyper religious people who are all passionate about dramatic sex trafficking stories, is that they straight up ignore the rampant sexual abuse WITHIN THEIR OWN CHURCHES and protect the abusers over the victims.
In the Mormon church specifically, because I have the most knowledge and experience in that religion. They conduct creepy “purity interview” between young kids and unqualified adults, alone, no parents allowed. I personally know a few people who were abused by the lay clergy and the adults were just moved to another area.
Then there was the whole BYU scandal where women were being expelled when they reported being raped because THEY were in violation of the code of conduct by allowing themselves to be raped.
@@ericahouston4395I was raised Catholic. Enough said.
Seems to me it's very easy to see why one would be concerned about sex trafficking of children, regardless. However, I would like some more information on the rampant sexual abuse in their own church, as in what type of abuse you refer too, as well as information on just how rampant it is, and where it takes place.
It would be pretty easy to find that information with a quick google search. Look up Catholic church and sex abuse. Mormon church and sex abuse. IBLP and sex abuse. The patriarchal religions are safe havens for abusers, because members are told to trust their male authorities without question.
I can only speak from experience within the Mormon church. But it's common for clergy to discourage victims and their families from reporting sexual abuse and assault, and then protect the abusers. Watch the netflix show about the girl who was kidnapped twice.@@jackm6307

That's terrible, I'm sorry. I'm so very lucky that my family members didn't fall for any of this garbage. It seems like an infection that some people catch.
I don't understand how people can fall for this toxic, juvenile, dangerous, self-contradictory nonsense. They say that people who are mentally unbalanced, ignorant and immature are especially vulnerable to falling for this because these things tend to disable the instinct to think critically that most adults have developed. It can be a temporary disablement, or a permanent one. Thank goodness, many snap out of it again after awhile. Too many people have been violently attacked, and even murdered or become murderers, and countless families ruined because of this MAGA specific cult phenomenon. It's a societal tragedy created by ruthless people.
Can we get a sequel on missing immigrant children and how conservative policies have opened vulnerable minors up to exploitation?
I bet they won't be releasing a movie about how major MAGA figures are being charged for trafficking of minors.

Whats also super unfortunate about this film and their organization in general is that it obfuscates the fact that most people who are trafficked are done so by a family member or someone they know. This film feels like a more extreme stranger danger psa
Right? And if Tim/Jim really want to impress, they should speak out against the sexual abuses being committed (and covered up) within their own religious institutions.
Agreed
Good point and since from what I gathered in this vid, OUR lacked after care program, returning these kids to the very situation that got them there in the first place which is so negligent, re-traumatising and feels more like they were doing it for the praise. Idk.
It's trying to say only brown ppl traffic kids. And not like the Mormon church.. which is notorious for trafficking.
@echomikekilo63 it wouldn't be possible to conduct these "raids" in the US because it's illegal for private citizens to just go around busting in doors while armed with automatic weaponry.
Ballard's first attempt at this, before pitching the movie, was a COPS style TV series.
The studios turned him down because of the possible legal problems associated with a bunch of Americans going into sovereign nations, asking for young girls and then claiming to be freeing them from THEM? The whole thing is sketchy and Ballard just needs to go away.
I watched Sound of Freedom with ZERO idea of what I was walking into, a friend just invited me 20 minutes before hand. The movie made me cry, not from stellar acting but the fact that it felt gross watching them go waaayyyy too far with portraying the horrible acts done to child .. slaves. I left feeling traumatized. It wasn’t until after I left the theater that I found out it was Q propaganda.
As soon as I heard that Jim Cavezeal (or however you spell his last name) was in it, I knew it was Q propaganda since he's a huge Q Quack.

As an exmo who lives in Utah I appreciate this so much. I also desperately need everyone to know that the tactical teams for OUR are just wealthy men from Utah who can afford to take a few weeks off and go to Africa. They're just Utah startup bros with no qualifications and very little training.
Wow not surprised
ugh, same (exmo living in Utah) and I cannot stress enough how right you are. They're just white Mormon dudes playing hero with no regard for the delicacy of any situation. Just straight trying to cause an international incident.
And the "criminals" targeted by these raids are probably very low-stake. The main "dangers" these bros face in these "raids" is probably the ones caused by their own lack of training: being the victims of friendly fire or accidentally shooting themselves.
🙃
I took a class in college and they literally point it out that your more likely to get trafficked by someone you KNOW.
I’m tired of seeing privileged people saying they’re gonna get snatched because there’s a zip tie on their car.
Lower socioeconomic status people are more likely to be trafficked. They’re targets because the justice system wouldn’t bat an eye if they were abuse.
This is very true. Traffickers are usually someone you know, same thing with perpetrators of SA it's usually people you know.
i can't thumbs this up more than once, so you get a reply instead.
Exactly...I learned that 90% of all child abductions in this country (for any reason) are committed by a parent, relative, or someone the child knows. But it's the high profile cases such as Etan Patz and Adam Walsh that got people obsessed with "stranger danger" being a major threat.
(and even before that, the back of the mind but nagging fear someone with a bag of candy would lure their child away)
I live in an affluent suburb. On our Facebook mom group they post almost weekly about creepy guys in stores and how they" had a feeling he was going to snatch them and traffic them" then 300 others chime in that since that store is off of a certain busy road.... the traffickers work our area hard for young moms and their children to smuggle off to other areas. I 1000% there are creepers watching moms and kids in stores doing inappropriate things- but don't you think if there were a slew of kids and women going missing in a high income, white area.... we'd hear about it? Like.... a lot!
The batch purchase trick has been used with right wing books for 30+ years. So much that the NYT Bestseller list adds an asterisk to books they suspect were purchased in bulk rather than individual buys. Trump Jr. Whined alot when his book got the asterisk. My guess is if this takes off, the movie industry will make use of the bulk buy asterisk as well.
Interesting
hard agree, also the symbol they use in the nyt list is called a "dagger" pretty sure, it looks like a sorta long cross more than anything, which im just realizing was probably why they picked that one lol. no clue how or why i remember that but it apparently caught my brains attention lol
The studios actually have a history of this. In the early days, they used to own theaters that would play their specific films. (If you have a theater in your town that is/was called the Fox, there's a reason.) This all got dismantled as monopolies in the 1930s.
The reason this is harder with film is manifold. First, there's already a process called four-walling: where the company rents a theater for a flat fee and keeps all the box office take. It's a decent deal for the distributor, but it isn't good for the theater. The theater makes most of its money from popcorn and soda, and if there are tickets sold but no mouths to buy popcorn, then it's almost not worth it to turn the film on. The theater isn't going to keep that deal for long. Basically Angel is four-walling without negotiating a flat fee; it's like buying 300 individual rolls of TP instead of going to Costco and buying 15 packages. It's not a sound business model. Bought-up books can be autographed and re-sold or given away to libraries or whatever, but live viewings of films cannot.
I would suggest AMC (or any theater) LOVES this. 1. The ticket isn't a comp, the theater gets the full ticket price 2. The moviegoer is much more likely since they didn't personally pay for the ticket to buy that big popcorn or soda or whatever not that they didn't have to spend the $20-30 on the ticket. Just like bulk buys of books (which are usually then given away for free at county fairs and what not) the only way this works is if you get ppl with extra money to buy into the cause, so a movie has to have some reason to exist beyond entertainment. And then the goal is to get on the bestseller list/highest grossing movie of the week list for the perceived accreditation. Could a Micheal Moore/Morgan Spurlock pull the same stunt? Sure. So if push comes to shove, if this becomes a thing, we will see some asterisk on it because paying for something is very different than being given something for free.... Personally, I don't care if rich people want to pay for others to see a bad movie. Pretending that it grossed a ton a cash organically however... that is annoying.
But the review bombing certainly worked on The Little Mermaid. So how come review bombing does not work on Sound of Freedom?
Actually there are a lot of MSM attacking Sound of Freedom, one bizzare point from CNN is going to see this movie is not going to help fighting child trafficking, but watching a movie about agent orange in Vietnam is not going to help clean up Vietnam anyway. It's a movie, the most it can do is to generate talks.
1:23:55 THANK YOU! This is such an important point to raise when we talk about anyone being victimized. Media depictions (made primarily by white, straight, Christian men) of sexual abuse being something that only happens when a big, scary stranger jumps out of the bushes and violently assaults you are exactly why so many victims (myself included) don't even realize they were raped until years later.
I wish I could attach pictures here, but I will just share a quick tale.
My local theater in Pennsylvania was showing this film, and they posted about it on Facebook. I commented explaining that most victims of human trafficking are from marginalized communities like those who are LGBTQ+. A reverend replied, and I quote, "Human trafficking turns kids gay and trans, not the other way around."
Oh no WHAT? I'm so sorry, that is a disgusting thing for anyone to say. How would trafficking cause someone to "become" LGBTQ?
Yeahhhh I’ve literally heard Christians say that you can only be gay if you’ve been s*xually abused…. Which is a LOT to unpack
Oh gawd. I'm sure they really believe that, too, that people can be "turned gay/trans", probably thinking that evil liberal school teachers are really undercover traffickers who are in league with the International Soros Paedo Cabal (which is *totally not poorly coded antisemitic bullshit*)
Or some other shit
At around 1.21 you mention how teenage girls are not even mentioned in the movie at all, even though they are most susceptible to CSA and trafficking. At that point I had a flashback to earlier in the video where Ballard literally says "women as young as 13". This is as horrifying as it is unsurprising, as the far-right 'protect the children' crowd likes to talk *A LOT* about wanting to lower the age of consent with the specific purpose of coercing/forcing young teenage girls into marriage and childbearing.
That is chilling 😵💫😳🫣
Most Christian groups don't urge their young ladies to get married and have kids early. They want them to go to college or learn a skill. And Q- AN is a Democratic invention. Its like the recent flat earth groups that are a government invention used to associate themselves with legitimate scientific groups.

I'm 7 weeks post open heart surgery, going through my own depression related to this major life change. There are few things I can do right now to feel like my normal self. This channel and every new video are gifts to me. Little breaks in the recovery process to just feel like myself. So Thank You from the bottom of my heart for staying strong which in turn helps at least this one viewer stay strong.
❤
I’m the mom of a 17 month old and I’m sending you lots of love ❤️ motherhood is a mental and emotional rollercoaster like no other, especially in the newborn stage.
You are strong making it through a major surgery. Surgery is a trauma on the body and physically causes depression. Post-operative depression is very normal and should be expected. Your body is sending your brain a warning light saying, "Stop! Slow down."
No attention paid to the kids' point of view? Check.
Everything goes back to normal once the kids are with their families again? Check.
This movie isn't about the victims. It's entirely about the parents' possessiveness over their children.
The AMC theatre conspiracies are so hilarious to me. We watched the last Guardians of the Galaxy and the power went out around three times. There was a scheduled blackout for repairs, and not once did I think that a satanic cabal was trying to prevent us from watching a Marvel movie.
When I was watching Star Trek 5 in 1989, the film or projector broke about 10 minutes in, theater gave us passes for a future viewing.
Because to them Marvel is owned by Disney and Disney is now satanic or sumn 🤷🏻♀️
my mom went full on obsessed with qanon in 2020
the amount of times i had to hear about the clintons eating babies or whatever is COUNTLESS
Did she finally get away from the beliefs or is she still hooked
my father in law has been deep into it since late 2018 or like early 2019 i cant remmeber but he says they drain blood from kids and drink it to stay young...yeahhh
Those brothers are surely grifters. They use crowdfunding for all projects. I feel crowd-funding should be used for new ideas and persons in dire situations. The brothers indirectly affect these other causes. Each person only guves so much. And how diligently do they repay their investors?

We can’t even get Christian’s to stop forcing their own kids to hug total strangers during church greeting times where everyone shakes hands and shit. Talk about teaching children they have no choice about who touches them…
Not to mention they want to prevent kids from learning anything about their body and how to recognize or talk about abuse. Ugh!
We taught my nieces and nephews that they never had to hug anyone even close family. They have to be polite and acknowledge people but when they were little sometimes a high five, thumbs up or blow a kiss was enough.

I’m like no thanks I’m good, she’s then like oh well if that time doesn’t work then you could go another time I’ll buy the tickets for you. I was immediately suspicious, growing up I can count on one hand the times we were allowed to go to the movies. that it was something else going on. And like of course she doesn’t want to go see Barbie together it’s this stupid thing. I pressed her on the issue and she said she’s just worried about the children and wants to be more educated on what’s going on. My parents are fundamentalists and some televangelist they follow must have put them onto it. So dumb.
I just started watching Shiny Happy People (I know I’m late to the party) and FREAKED THE FUCK OUT AND SCREAMED when I saw Jen’s beautiful freaking self in that show!! I appreciate your work on this video. I didn’t realize I had been a victim of trafficking until after I had escaped, found myself on the phone with one of the local homeless support centers and had to ask “Wait can you define trafficking?”
I was 23. She was my girlfriend/roommate (it was toxic, I know, surprisingly). I had all appearances of home and no idea because I didn’t have a perspective on it outside what movies like Sound of Freedom portrays.
Thank you for calling out how specifically dangerous this movie is.
The right wing is making a real big push to sort of incept themselves into popular culture. They’ve been pouring a ton of money into movies, shows, country singers, etc.
They might end up preaching to the choir.
Seem to have become WAY more organized in their harassment of human rights activists etc, too? We're having to teach our Amnesty International advocates a lot more about ways of keeping themselves safe at protests & events, because the right-wingers are getting really coordinated and aggressive in their attempts at physical intimidation, online harassment & doxxing, and slandering people to their employers etc.
Also coordinating a mass presence at government community consultation events, basically overtaking any space for diverse representation of real community concerns? And mobilizing ill-informed but suggestible communities such as the congregation of Destiny Church, who will turn up at things because their pastors tell them to, even if they don't actually understand the issues being contested.
All in all their level of coordination just seems much higher & more calculated than in the past. Don't know how much of that is perhaps because those in charge have finally caught on to the possibilities of social media as an organizing tool, or hired/acquired colleagues who can do that for them...?
The thing is- none of it is good. I hope people keep responding poorly to it
Let them waste their money. All their shit is a flash in the pan anyway. When they've burned through their cash on this trashy garbage no one will even remember this crap exists.
Yet somehow they claim to be the most silenced and censored... yet they are everywhere.
My Mother is a devout Catholic and has been mentioning this movie recently. As a non-practicing Catholic I was immediately skeptical. Sure enough, you answered all of my questions. I have seen so many say it has nothing to do with Qanon and that if you don't support this movie you are supporting child trafficking. I was surprised to find out that it's created by Mormons, I really assumed it was created by right wing, fundamentalist Christians and many don't seem to usually support Mormons. I assume everyone is in some way grifting now, be it for money or politics so are fine with being dishonest.
For me it was seeing Sloan spread disinformation about the conspiracies about this movie. Gah this is so so good! So glad you’re talking about this movie. When I saw all of my evangelical Christian friends getting excited about this movie, I knew I didn’t want to see it! 😅 Another thing that is SO important to note is that so many teen girls who are trafficked look like sex workers to law enforcement and the public. They are then arrested for prostitution - they are literally being arrested for being victims!! Law enforcement needs to stop going after the sex workers and go for the Johns and pimps.

I'm always astonished at what the right will do to deny capitalism's part in human trafficking...
It's less to do with capitalism and more to do with human nature and the fact that through influence you can escape the consequences of your actions. There are plenty of examples of such things outside capitalist societies. Neighbour of mine was a local miniboss of the communist party. Dude had boys delivered to him every other week in exchange for various favours. There were tons like him that aren't well documented. Probably the best known case would be Beria.
@gogudelagaze1585 just because communists and non capitalists can be creeps and human traffickers does NOT mean capitalism doesnt highly lend itself to the direct exploitation of people, even thru child s*x trafficking , more than any other system would.
@@gogudelagaze1585Thank you.
Y'all, human trafficking is a political problem. Yes, people suck, but by saying "People suck, it's a people issue", you fail to recognize and acknowledge power imbalances, money influences, and belief systems that lend to trafficking and allow it to thrive, and you kill a solution. "People problems" don't have solutions. Political and socioeconomic ones do.
@@MissLilRedRooster It exists because there’s a demand for it. There’s no political or socioeconomic prerequisite for being a pervert or greedy. Non-capitalist societies did not get rid of greed or perversion.
The regime of the Soviet Union (not capitalist) used prison forced labour to enrich itself. Many millions were unjustly imprisoned for this purpose.
Where I used to go to university there is a prevalent issue of migrants being trafficked for farm labor (especially seasonal farm labor). Traffickers will offer transport from Mexico to the US for work. They may lie about the location, the type of work, or having paper work. Then employers will hold them against their will or threaten to withhold wages. Many of these migrant are child, especially young boys. There are some non-profits and law enforcement working to crackdown on this, but because these aren't US citizens not many people care about these kids or their families.
I wish there were ways to help fight THIS issue
@@PurpleIrishSweater
Giving migrants a base level of legal rights can help. But that's specifically why conservative politicians don't want to give them rights to begin with.
Indeed. It's not to say sex trafficking isn't a issue but labor exploitation is an infinitely bigger issue . While everyone agrees rescuing innocent children from such atrocities is a good thing not many of us want to reflect on how our consumer habits affect labor exploitation. That is a much more uncomfortable topic to deal with.
@@nikkio.9990
The problem with tackling child labor is that a lot of the cheaper products are cheap because of the exploited labor. Additionally, the lack of “true consumer choice,” in the USA makes it very difficult to do accurate research on which company doesn’t use such methods directly or indirectly.

I love this! You're not the only commenter to say something similar about the theatre's constant issues. Appreciate hearing yalls perspectives.
She should put this theater on crowd funding so the AC gets fixed AND she can watch this train wreck of a movie😂😂😂
Some of these conspiracy theories genuinely amaze me, because I don't know how someone reaches adulthood with such a naive understanding of how organizations and people actually work. If AMC, Regal, Cinemark, Landmark, Harkins, Alamo Drafthouse, or some other company doesn't want to show a movie, history has shown that they just won't show the movie---otherwise, we'd hear tons of stories about faulty air conditioning ruining showings of X-rated or indie movies!
I feel bad for Mira Sorvino. Weinstein destroyed her career and now she can only get work from these sketchy religious organizations. If Brendan Fraser deserves a career comeback, then why not Mira? We see you Mira.
She does get other work, but probably can’t afford to be too choosy. It sucks.
I never researched that. She and Sean Astin were both in a weird religious movie called "Do You Believe" that seemed out-of-place for both of them. But I guess I assumed that they were also the religious types who believed in the message of that movie. So I assumed she believed in the message of The Sound of Freedom too.
This was a great deep dive into why this movie is so ridiculous and honestly damaging. One thing that wasn't touched upon however, was how Tim Ballard and OUR actually drove up some trafficking in places they had their "stings". As they would show up and ask for MORE children from the traffickers. There were victims who had never been a victim of trafficking before Tim and his people showed up. They were trafficked SPECIFICALLY because Tim requested more victims. Like...that to me is actuality insane. Not to mention, by posing as doctors and doing what they did in places where doctors arent just readily available, they stopped people from seeing any doctors because they sewed distrust with the medical community. What a joke.
The distrust of doctors thing, just so Ballard could pretend to be SEAL Team 6 or whatever, that is a damn tragedy.
(Intelligence on Bin Laden was collected by medical teams drawing blood samples during vaccine clinics. I'm sure Tim Ballard thought he could replicate that with a cut-rate LDS equivalent of the IBLP's "ALERT team" fake disaster medics.)
Am I the only one who finds it ironic that Angel Studios is selling "God's children are not for sale" t-shirts, tote bags and bumper stickers on their merch page? Usually an older male family member, father, brother , uncle. The actual groups that fight trafficking do not endorse this organization . They are simply using this issue to spread false conspiracies and make money.
@@robinhood20253You are correct, it's all to pump up people with fear, misinformation, and playing into their "white savior" complex. It simplifies a much bigger problem.

Ballard completely and utterly lost me with that batshit clip and the description of the "baby factory" and "Satanic ritual abuse". Apparently the Satanic Panic has never left the guy. The old target was Metal Music and Wiccans and now it's Global Elites and Libs. This shit is dangerous. There are apparently never enough layers of conspiracy for these nuts. Ballard has that rapid patter that con artists like to use- just a random observation. Thank you for this very deep dive into the behind the scenes of this film!
he did come across " a baby factory" in some of his missions which is well documented , human organ harvesting is real , not a conspiracy theory . and who are you to say it is not true, unless you have been on those dangerous missions with him. If not its your ignorance talking. It is mentioned in UN reports , and other official sources about human organ trafficking especially in war torn countries and yes women in modern day slavery do sell their babies for organs, do your research. Just in UK several years ago BBC wrote an article about hundreds of children trafficked to uk for blood rituals as uncovered by the police. Its because of people like you , who don't want to deal with evil in the world , put everything down to " conspiracy theories" , and people who try to expose it are being ridiculed and abused.
My Orthodox Mormon father is OBSESSED with The Chosen, the Tuttle Twins and Angel studios in general. His latest obsession with Sound of Freedom and his constant posting about it in our family group chat has been driving me crazy. I knew the movie was problamatic but your deep dive has helped me better understand that and gives me some great counter points on the topic next time he brings it up, so thank you!
Also- I'm looking forward to hearing your take on the Tuttle Twins. My dad (whose youngest child is 26 and therefore not the targeted demographic) owns the books and everytime someone with kids comes to visit he artistically displays them throughout the house and tries to convince the guests to have thier kids read them. 🙄
I'm so sorry...😢 I have a relative l tried to inform about that place and we got into it..☹️
I'm laughing because I was a Utah Mormon from birth until I was about 24 and I have never heard anyone referred to as "Orthodox Mormon"--it's great! I'm giggling!
@@clarerichardson8770 😆 I say it that way because now days there are so many Mormons that are more lax with the rules and thier beliefs. Not every Mormon takes the Bible or Book of Mormon as literal history anymore- makes sense due to modern science. They don't always wear thier garments, they let thier kids wear "immodest" clothing, some of them cuss, drink coffee or alchohol in private...... and my father won't even let Coca-Cola in his house. 😂
@@brookebaker9867 oh my god, yeah, it makes complete sense! It just cracked me up because it's perfect! In Utah we call those kinds of Mormons "Jack Mormons," people who do whatever they want during the week and then show up at church on Sundays and pretend to be holy. (One of my favorite restaurants has a cocktail called a Jack Mormon and I get it every time, it's delicious, hahaha)
This is kind of like the Blair Witch Project. Viral marketing that claimed it was a real story, people flooded to theaters to watch thinking it was real, there were a lot of intense reactions that made more people flood to the movies and talk about it, then people came to their senses and realized it was just a mediocre movie and forgot about it. I just hope we get to the realization and forgetting part...
why do you think a movie that sheds light to human trafficking in general is a n unimportant movie? even if it was mediocre , we need movies that expose this horrific abuse whether mediocre or not. do you know better ones that expose human trafficking and child exploiting materials? Have you seen this movie? considering it is based on a true story and having one of the best dramatic actors Jim Caviezel ,who actually did a phenomenal job i would never call it mediocre. Also your predictions did not come true, as this movie got phenomenal success because it is a work of art + has a capacity to reach millions of people and open dialogue about the problem nobody wants to talk about in the mainstream media
Spot on
@@jurgalt2005astroturfing is the only reason why this movie was a success, especially for a film handling a serious topic like this that's been done before are better like a dozen Law & Order SVU episodes or the Taken Trilogy, also or good film performance in The Count of Monte Christo does not equal to Caviezel being a "great dramatic actor" especially when his performance a con man Ballard definitely shows the lightning that struck him definitely stunted his acting chops
At least Blair Witch wasn’t a grift that sensationalized an actual issue.
Someone else on RUclips debunked Tim’s entire thing. All the stories he’s been peddling has been proven to be totally false. At least one person managed to get out of the situation herself and he took the credit. He seems to be infamous for completely fabricating or greatly overstating his actual role in the stories. Let me get this straight… they sold tickets that would *never* have butts in the seats and then the TikTok conspiracy theorists said it was because the elusive “they” were suppressing the movie? Please correct me if I have something wrong here.
i work at a movie theater and shortly after the movie came out we had someone buy out a theater for people to see it for free. literally 200 tickets. then advertised it on the radio without informing the theater beforehand. it was a logistical nightmare and my manager was so annoyed by it. also i can confirm that movies getting put in smaller theaters is due to expected turn out. the longer a movie as been out the more it will get shown in our small theaters because we have new releases that need the larger theaters
At my local theater there is a group of ladies who were buying all the unsold tickets and giving them away. They didn't give them away in a calm manner. They were confrontational and would yell ata anyone walking that they needed to be educated and to take a free ticket. If you ignored them they would declare that you support sex trafficking. Apparently a lot of them have been banned. So for about a month this movie was sold out thanks to there ladies. They arent there amymore cause i think the theater git tired of them
This movie and the hyped promotion machine behind it made me think of The Passion of the Christ in 2004. I went to see The Passion, but something about wasn't right. I felt the movie rely on fear and scare tactics to push the movie. Fast forward to 2023 and I get the same feelings about this movie. Trafficking has been going unfortunately since the creation of this planet. I feel movies like Sound of Freedom don't tackle the issue, but create this "white savior" narrative that is old and been over done.
it’s ironic since they both have the same lead actor
We didn’t realize it at the time but Passion of the Christ probably marked the beginning of this wave of American Fascism. It was a film made by a Nazi, starring a Nazi.
Yes. Mel Gibson and Jim Caviezel are Nazis. A person who talks about Jews the way Mel does is a Nazi. A person who spreads blood libel (look it up) like Jim does is a Nazi.
I hated that movie, it was horribly done
I liked the music for Last Temptation.

I worked for the human trafficking hotline in college and can absolutely say that this film is pure propaganda and the Q idea of what trafficking is completely ignores the true and horrible realities of the many shapes trafficking takes.
P.s. James has the prettiest eyes omg
Yeah, this take has biases.
It's really interesting to hear this, from a reliable source.
I did my masters thesis on sex trafficking and am part of a research lab that studies human trafficking. This movie is fucking awful!! It’s so harmful. Organizations like this actively hurt victims because they delay victims treatment.
When I went to see Barbie, the AC was broken in the theater but was working in the lobby?? And the bathrooms?? What is Regal Cinemas trying to hide? Is Ken behind all this??
I AM SO GLAD YOU BROUGHT UP OUR AND THE VICE ARTICLE AND ALL THE SHADEY SHIT THEY’VE DONE! I work in the same building their office is located in and they’ve just given consistent red flags. I’m in the non-profit space in Utah and I make it my mission to share the article with everyone I meet who praises them because they’ve tried so hard to sweep it under the rug.
My mom is older and her algorithm went total qanon when this movie came out. It was kind of scary how much was in her recommended on yt and on Instagram. It worries me because we've lost family members to qanon. Anyways we couldn't stop laughing because we were both wearing our "stars, stripes, reproductive rights" shirts so we probably would have been burned if we didn't look into it and went to the theater.
Dude. You just have to block all that stuff from her algorithm. There is a documentary called “How Fox News Brainwashed my Father.” The girl in the movie rescued her father from becoming a total extremist when she outright deleted the email subscriptions, and conservative RUclips channels from her father’s email and online accounts.
I love the shirt ❤❤🫶🏻
By reproductive rights you mean you want to be able to kill babies with no legal or social consequences
Living in Utah rn and the conversations around this movie are wild. Highly recommend folks read the full article Meg Conley wrote, it's a really vivid look into these sting operations and a glimpse into Tim's real priorities - the fame and fortune.
And don't you dare say anything critical about this movie or even ask a question! I posted a comment on an on-line article that was an interview with the director. I questioned the effectiveness of donating to promote the movie versus donating to actual anti-trafficking organizations. I was asked if I supported anti-trafficking efforts, which is, of course, a back-handed way of asking if I support trafficking. 🤦
Once as a kid, I went to a cinema birthday party for one of my friends. We were supposed to watch a kids movie, but instead they showed Mission Impossible 2, by mistake.
It went on for a good half hour or more before anyone noticed.
And I never realized until now, that it was an attempt to kidnap and traffic all of us to the church if scientology.
Oh please, if they wanted you brainwashed into scientology, they'd show you Battlefield Earth instead
It honestly hit me hard seeing how serious James got at the end of this over how disgusted he was over Tim and how the film treated him. It felt like your favorite teacher being furious at you. And I think it drives home how disgusting this film is.
EDIT: slight update. Fabian Marta, the investor who was accused of child trafficking, was acquitted of all charges. However, Tim Ballard was, surprise surprise, outed by Operation Underground Railroad of being kicked out for seven different allegations of sexual harassment, which also led to him being kicked out of the Mormon Church. And now Ballard is running for senate.
I got goose bumps when you mentioned the tech exec paying $40k to watch the sting operation. It also made me sick and that is disgusting. I just can't. . .
I got a new job at a high school for this year. The counselor is super sweet but she recommended this movie to my coworker and I. She talked being a donor to operation underground railroad and how the founder is so incredible. My coworker and I looked at each other out of the corner of our eyes like oh god no. I feel bad for my coworker because he just escaped Wilson county and their rabid Mom's for freedom only to get hit with that recommendation the second week of school.
oof… I would tell someone about that. I have a hard time believing a QAnon person can be a good counselor.

This was an interesting watch as someone who is intimately familiar with this organization. My uncle worked for this organization in both an undercover operative and documenting operator capacity. After working for this organization he was haunted and never the same. He left the church after working here and has never been able to discuss any of what he saw. Him being this traumatized from seeing these horrifically abusive actions, compared to how narcissistic these talking heads are is truly sickening. My uncle joined this team to help people not for this stupid level of virtue signaling and notary.
I'm really sorry for him. Sounds like the list of TB's victims is way longer that the children he endangered on these "operations" and the women, who have accused him of sexual misconduct/grooming/etc.
Tim Ballard have been rumoured to have been excommunicated (source: John Dehlin, Mormon Podcast Stories). I feel, that this is small vindication for all the pp he harmed in the name of the LDS faith.
@@moustik31Probably because he's bad PR, not because the church gives a damn.
That's so sad. I hope your uncle is able to heal, but I expect nothing can remove certain things from the mind. This movie is very saddening, as it seems to be more about a solipsistic man praising himself, rather than saving people who need it so badly.
As soon as this movie was advertised to me, I knew it was propaganda lmao. Immediately all my extended fundie family began raging on Facebook for weeks about this movie. Watching grown adults go nutty over a movie and acting the the government is sabotaging your local cinemark is actually so insane

I agree - just recently watched it and it was actually kind of interesting and pretty well done. But I am non-affiliated with any religion so maybe I could look at it with just curiosity and not as a search for some kind of religious conversion or confirmation. No desire to watch the "Freedom" movie however.

I love Matthew so much. His character helped me embrace my own neurodivergence more. I remember on Instagram someone was accusing me of promoting human trafficking because I said that immigrants who are victims of human trafficking should be able to come to the US to seek asylum. I never said I condone human trafficking, I said the victims of human trafficking need to have a safe place. And this guy twisted it to make me some sort of perpetrator, then told me to watch Sound of Freedom. I looked it up, did not like the premise of it, looked at a couple articles at how the movie affected people's perceptions of human trafficking, did not like it either, so I never looked further into it. Glad to see someone else is seeing the bs I saw in this movie.
At 41:00 he makes a point that they pretended to be doctors. That’s illegal. You can’t do it as a civilian and the military can’t pretend to be medical either, it’s against the Geneva Conventions. So eff this dude and that whole thing. Those laws are in place for a reason.
Exactly, yep. Pretending to be a doctor is illegal and very bad. Also, that was the only way that they could get in? Highly unlikely. But even if only doctors would be allowed on somewhere, you couldn't get an actual doctor to help out? Child trafficking seems like the kind of thing a doctor would be happy to help with... if you know, you were really concerned about the children.
I got in an argument in a tiktok comment section because he thought trafficking only looks like it did sound of freedom, therefore kids cannot be trafficked by family members in their own home. He didn’t think it was trafficking if they didn’t cross international boarders.
The painting at about the hour mark literally made my jaw drop. The nerve!

I think this new anti human trafficking thing is the new war on drugs. Not that human trafficking iant a big issue - heck, drugs are - but the reaponse isnt about helping people. Its about villifying and criminalozing marginalized groups. A lot of the same tactics are even being used (like i remember seeing antitrafficking posters on the bathroom doors in public restrooms while I was travelling recently, and not only did it seem useless at actually addressing the issue, I thought "didnt they used to hang flyers like this about the war on drugs?").
I agree. It’s used to push a narrative, nothing else.
Because war on drugs failed?

They immediately snapped and said “Child human trafficking is a very real issue!!” as if bringing up facts and concerns was translated to supporting trafficking. People are fighting more for this movie and its misinterpretation of trafficking and its victims more than fighting the actual problem to actually help victims. It’s so backwards.

Also, really looking forward to next month’s video on the Tuttle twins!
Regarding the technical errors at the theaters: I'm an ingest operator, which means we work on making sure these sort of errors don't happen. Given how Angel doesn't seem to allocate funds correctly, my guess is that they didn't hire appropriate professionals to ingest/kit/qc the films correctly. or, if they weren't responsible, our industry is crazy understaffed right now and there are likely more mistakes as a result. Also, AMC is notorious for dropping the ball on special screenings... including by companies that Angel would consider their nemesis, so it could just be par for the course AMC nonsense. I also think it's funny they were saying having audio descriptions was somehow stopping people from accessing the film, when it would only make it more accessible..
