I don't know yet if being a Mennonite is right for me, but I definitely want to live in a community in which people live their lives according to moral principles. Much respect to Mennonites for that. In my church, people don't care to know you unless you already know their circle friends or they think you are affluent.

Today I visited my local Mennonite church for the first time on a whim. I’ve been veering towards anabaptist theology in my own beliefs and decided that today was as good a day as any to try it out! I walked in and panicked because I felt out of place, but I waved someone down and she kindly offered to sit with me, got the hymns out for me, and gave me a brief idea of what to expect! She was so genuinely kind and I enjoyed every aspect of the service. I will most definitely be returning in the future and I’m so grateful for videos like yours that help me to gain more knowledge on the days after Sunday!

Run from the Mennonite religion and find a true and enriching relationship with The Lord Jesus Christ in a Baptist, Southern Baptist, or even Presbyterian church (PCA). Mennoniteism teaches unbiblical, legalistic heresy to its followers!

Coming from the amish community, there was so much emphasis and efforts put into enforcing dress codes and rules, that the heart matters and most importantly, Jesus as the center of the church was sometimes forgotten. For these reasons and many others we felt led to leave the culture and church, for this we are shunned and no longer get to see our families. I pray that God can open their eyes and soften their hearts, so they may know true salvation!

The aspect of community is missing in non-anabaptist / mainstream Christianity and it’s honestly such a loss. It’s something I’ve always longed for and I think deep down most people do if they would stop to identify it within themselves… but I think it would require us to give up a lot of our individualism - which would not be a bad thing. I pray one day we will find community. Thanks for sharing.

I live in Derby, ny. The southtowns between Hanburg ny and Angola ny. We are looking to move and join a community, fellowship and church that will lead us into the Mennonite life style. I am a child of parents who are divorced and remarried. I think that you guys were so kind about the topic. It is really hard to talk about, especially in a family of divorce. I don't believe in divorce or remarriage. The Bible says marriage is until death. It is hard to find others who have the same beliefs about marriage, especially after telling them about my parents. So many people think that I believe it's ok because my parents are remarried.
I think a super important part of getting marriage is being equally yoked. You shouldn't marry someone who doesn't have the same beliefs or expectations. Marriage will have struggles no matter who you are, but I think it is important to marry someone who believes the same as you.

If a marriage is bad....divorce is the impulsive reaction and immediate decision often.....and I know some situations are very very awful but I would love to see physical separation first and working on the marriage long distance to see what work God may do before divorce is decided. I was sure I was getting a divorce within this last year, but never even entertained the idea of remarrying another man. Just thought my marriage was done for and I’d be single til death, but I separated for about 8 months, many of those months had no contact at all, except maybe a text or two which turned into a phone call or two months and months later....it seemed like the end and I knew there was no rush for a divorce if that’s what would happen because I knew I wouldn’t start a new life with another man ever so I figured if divorce happens, it doesn’t need to be immediately done and instead I waited for the Lord which seemed to be forever. I hardly recognize my husband now, in a good way....God gave me my husband back because my husband gave himself back to God and I’m so glad I am reunited with my dear husband who I cried out to the Lord for....that he at least come back to the Lord even if he didn’t come back to me. Now I see more of God’s never failing love from what our Saviour miraculously did for our marriage and words cannot describe.

I too am a lifelong Christian & was raised by very loving Christian parents, married more than 50 years. I wasn't raised to believe in divorce but I am it wasn't an easy decision nor a quickly made decision. There are many situations one finds themselves in that cannot be worked out if both parties aren't willing. I chose divorce rather than have my children grow up in such a volatile household & think that was the normal man & wife relationship. They are grown men & understand but the father/child relationship is sadly & unfortunately strained after many years. It's a personal decision for each person in their own circumstances. You don't know what your neighbor may be going through behind closed doors.

@@tatianapriebe5042 the Mennonites I've met have a stronger sense of personal holiness, more in line with the way Pentecostals were 50 years ago. I don't think they view the operation of the Holy Spirit the way Pentecostals do, or if they do, they don't talk about it, so they may be cessationist in doctrine. They don't view the baptism of the Spirit in the way we do, seeing it more as a change of attitude than an infilling with the manifestation. But as for personal walk, they are very scripturally based, worship God frequently, sing hymns as they work, and have a general demeanor of peace with God.

I grew up in a conservative Christian family with values similar to those of the Mennonites even though we were not Mennonites. Growing up, I had several encounters with Mennonites - some positive and some negative. Some I met were strong Christians, and I was touched by the passion in their marriages as well as their strong dedication to the Lord. However, others seemed to be confused on the gospel. Their rules had become mixed up with gospel to the point that it seemed like they were saying the way to heaven was to live the Mennonite lifestyle. Regardless of the lifestyle we live, salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone!

Do not conform to the world but be transformed by the will of God.
But Jesus also calls Christians to be a light to the world and to go out into the world and spread the saving grace of God to all people. So separate as a child of God saved by His grace but a beacon of light of God's saving grace to the world.

I'm divorced as well. This has been hard even though I'm not remarried or looking to get remarried. In my search to find a conservative Anabaptist group I kept getting rejected by so many churches.
As soon as my divorce was mentioned they stopped being friendly and I was told I wouldn't never be allowed to join and the conversation was over. I tried to reach out to my husband and tried to reconcile earlier this year and later on a few months ago after becoming a Christian. He is still with the other woman and engaged if not married by now. He wants nothing to do with me. I got very discouraged and almost gave up. I didn't want to attend a mainstream church that allows divorce and remarriage.
Surprisingly a new order Amish community I reached out to was much kinder to me about it. They are willing to let me join but made sure I knew I couldn't remarry. They are an electric new order so the transition won't be as hard. I got to visit for a little bit just before Christmas. They thought it would be best to visit first. I really enjoyed the visit.

This was excellent and very enlightening on the runnings of the Mennonite community.
You hit the nail on the head when you talked about the heart. Some people attend church their whole life and believe themselves to be a Christian, when all that being a Christian is is attending church Sunday morning. Their hearts need to be changed. There are many churches who have caved to society and the only representation of Christ is perhaps the church's name.
In the Old Testament it talks about moving the landmarks and not to because it brings about death. When society moves the landmarks it also brings about death.
Your peek into the Mennonite community has refreshed me! While I know that people masquerade around "in the name of" Jesus and are detrimental, the steadfastness is a wonderful thing. 😊

Thank you for your answer to my comment. There are so many things you believe and the way you do things that I was brought up with. I love all your Videos and the way you are bringing up your Son. He is such a thoughtful, kind and loving child. I learned to cook from Scratch, my Father built our house, so did one of my brothers build his home. We were brought up in a very close family knit. Holidays at Grandma's on a different island where for many many years no electricity, no running water. However, there was a day that was the Lord's day. That was a day reserved for him and meals were prepared the day before and the day was a day of worship. I loved those days, after church we had to go and visit Aunt's and Uncles spend time with them. It was considered respectful to do that.
Helping people who needed help was just a way if Life. I have continued to do that and I look at it as a Blessing to be able to help people.
I make my own clothes because I have a problem with some if the fashions if today. Most are not me. I am having a problem trying to buy clothes as now the Arthritis is in my hands. I also do not believe in excess amounts of clothes.
I made all my Grandchildren clothes when they were growing up also madeall my son's clothes because I did not want him to get involved in the clothing fashion and Designer Stuff. I like Simplicity.
At my church before Covid, in Toronto, I always every Sunday after church I made a nice snack to go with coffee. However, some people were not nice about it. They made remarks like, you are trying to feed the five thousand, little kinds of remarks. I did not stop though. Our Congregation was a lot if Seniors and I felt like it was good to stay on after and get a chance to fellowship with each other because through that you could learn who needed help or just to talk. My Mom and Dad had a Life if service and it really is a wonderful to do that.
To mention Carriages, I see nothing wrong with that either. Carriages have been around from beginning. I have travelled and seen all kinds of transport. Growing up there were Horses and Donkeys and Mules.bi saw people using Carts. As a little girl I loved it when my Mom would take us into town in a Carriage. Mom had a Car but Dad used a lBicycle. At my Grandparents they had a Truck but we were encourages to Walk which was fun for me. Sometimes when you talk I wish I could just have a conversation with you. I come from a Christian family but we were though not to condemn the way other people worship. You had a Christmas Story for your Son and that was priceless. Have a great weekend. Blessings.

Finally got to watch this. As someone from a different background fellowshipping with Anabaptist churches (14 years now) I can say that you really did a good job of explaining the pros and cons. I could have written that list myself. It is hard to enter the Mennonite culture. The pros have kept us coming back.
This is a dreadful saying but at times I have felt it deeply….”if you weren’t born a Mennonite you’ll never be a Mennonite.” Please don’t be offended. It is just hard to be on the outside looking in. The Mennonite church/culture has so much to offer the world.

How we are raised is so much who we are. I'm sorry it's difficult... I wish that could change, but it truly is a different culture within a culture 🙂

(Yes there are conservative Christians in WA state ;) But my mom's family tree is Mennonite. During the covid shut down I was able to trace my Grandmother's father's maternal side back to Switzerland ... descendents of Drunkards aka. German Baptist Brethren -Anabaptists. My grandmother's father was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He moved to California. His last name Butterbaugh/Puterbaugh.... farmers... Butterbaugh barn is still standing. I find the Mennonite way of life very appealing. Thank you for the well thought out balanced discussion. I guess as a Christian family as well we hold the same values but try to accomplish them more individually. I can see how having a specific way of holding to those values as a group could help children not feel so left out of the group. I told my kids that since the culture is changing so much we are going to start appearing more & more different as we try to hold on to our Christian values.
    My questions are
    * so men do not register for the military at 18, there is a religious exemption?
    * is divorce allowed if there is physical abuse or adultery?
    * Do you all live in the same neighborhood, place or are you spread out within a city?
    * What are the church’s views on phones, social media, & movies or television
    Thanks again!

I joined an urban Mennonite church in 1993. I was totally outside of the Mennonite faith and culture, being of English Canadian Anglican upbringing. I am now an elder at a small rural Mennonite church. One thing I wish to make clear, Mennonite conferences, groups and congregations can differ in many ways. And there are a lot of them. Some are surprisingly liberal while others are conservative. They vary from being closed to extremely welcoming when new people attend. Many are family churches, where the majority of attendees are from families linked by marriage. They may welcome you, but you will always feel a bit like an outsider at these churches.
There are Swiss Mennonites, Russian Mennonites and Mexican Mennonites (an offshoot of Russian Mennonites) and they often are at odds with each other. Age old differences in beliefs, histories and culture have taken their toll, and these feelings have lasted for many generations. I live in SW Ontario and there are a number of Mennonite churches here with many differences. The Mexican Mennonites from Durango and Chihuahua are intolerant of each other, and many other Mennonites attend Baptist, Alliance and Independent churches to separate themselves from these animosities.
I am very happy to be a Mennonite. It is one of the best things that happened to me. But if you seriously wish to attend a Mennonite church, I suggest that you arrange to meet the pastor in advance and discuss your beliefs and get a feel for what the culture, dress code and internal politics are within that church. Also get a copy of the Mennonite Statement of Faith. Be aware that some conferences have made changes to it. Read the copy that your local church has embraced and ensure that it is in line with your beliefs.

Thank you so much for explaining this. I live in Ontario, Canada and we have such a wide variety of groups. Some are horse and buggy and wear black only, for women, men white shirts and black pants. Then others the only way I can identify them as Mennonite’s, is by the dresses and head covers. I always wondered how there could be such a difference. I now have a better understanding. The one thing that seems consistent, among all the groups, is a sense of community.

Great job explaining your religion! One thing that could surprise people upon joining the church is that a lot of Mennonite groups believe they are the One True Church. Holdeman mennonites for example don’t believe there is a way to be saved outside their church if you leave it. Excommunication and avoidance can also be off putting if you aren’t prepared for it. I don’t speak for all Mennonite groups but this is the case with Holdeman Mennonites

Yes, that church group is known for that. It's one thing that has kind of divided them from other mennonites as in the past they have been known to evangelize other groups. It's rather unique to them, but I do think it's been changing in the last years.

I’m very drawn to the Anabaptist beliefs and lifestyle. Other Christian churches, we’ve looked into are very worldly based on entertaining. They do not separate themselves enough from the world. Coming from the world, we know the importance of keeping it separate because sin and the devil can be so tricky and deceiving. Especially through clothing, music and bending the Bible to fit one’s own desires rather than only following the teachings and word of Jesus Christ. I’m going to look into Mennonite churches in our area. Thank you for all the information!

As always I enjoy your videos! . Especially loved the outtakes! For those who may be looking, I find that there are other conservative Protestant groups that are very similar in beliefs and doctrine, if someone is on here and can’t quite find a church in your area that is Mennonite, I have found some German baptist, brethren churches or also Wesleyan Methodist or pilgrim holiness churches who share some of the core beliefs. Not to be confused with the more liberal Wesleyan church, which it separated from about the 1950s. Of course the Wesleyan Methodist etc churches sometimes don’t share the headcovering belief and may have piano music, they do share the same core conservative Bible believing theology otherwise. I have attended both types of churches and define myself as a Wesleyan Methodist who believes in the prayer veil, and not going to war. Sometimes it is very hard to find a good local church; sometimes our humanity gets in the way, as is appropriately described in this video. My advice is just remember we are not following a particular pastor or teacher, we are following the Bible, and with that in mind, I can find myself at home in a number of churches. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Very thoughtful talk about your faith. I think the bottom line is following Jesus and kingdom living. I think it would be hard to join any Anabaptist church if you were not raised in the culture. I have Mennonite and German Baptist friends, have attended their church for special occasions, gone to their conferences and yet I always sense that “slight distance” that would not make me totally accepted. As the world has become so chaotic and churches have gotten so far away from the gospel and Holiness of God I believe people are searching for more dogmatic types of churches. As you pointed out, all denominations have problems because we are fallen, sinful humans. To me, the most important thing would be to find a doctrinally sound church - the Bible is always the final authority. Many of the other things follow (i.e. modesty) as your heart becomes more in line with the teachings. Thanks for the great talk - you two are true examples of Christ!

Born and raised Catholic. When I became of age, I found my beliefs didn’t always align with the teachings, and so I went searching. I met a wonderful, very godly couple who spoke and lived their truth, and they belonged to the Church of the Brethren. I joined the church, and even was re-baptized, as I had been a baby when my parents had that done. Our beliefs align very closely with the Mennonite church. We are anabaptist and a peace church, emphasize the New Testament, and living a simple life based on service to God and others. One difference is that our beginnings were in Schwarzenau Germany, but the same timeframe and for the same reason of religious persecution, led by Alexander Mack. When they left, it was by way of the Netherlands, where they settled among the Mennonite community there. From there they emigrated to the United States, and settled in Pennsylvania, among the German population there. The first churches met in homes, shared a meal, and studied God’s word. I’ve been so happy for joining this church, and feel like I found my home. Loved your video!

My husband is descended from a long line of Methodist Preachers (one a friend of Wesley) and we were both baptised Methodist, so are familiar with bible teachings.
But, the difference between our neighbours is amazing. The JW’s are kind, helpful, pleasant and in every way ‘Christian’. Sadly the same cannot be said of the PB. They are the total opposite. This brings home so vividly that it’s the people who make a church, not the ‘label’.

My daughter & I went to a Mennonite church a few weeks ago, even though we haven't ever been before. Turns out they have been literally 3 blocks from us for 3 years & I had no idea. They were all extremely welcoming & my daughter was in heaven bcuz one girl is teaching her how to sew dresses from bed sheets. I was a little worried they'd be like what the heck are you doing here but that's not the case. The entire church looked at us b4 service started but we sat on the right side where all the women were. Everything was going great until they prayed & everyone was on their knees facing us... We hurried & knelt as well. After the sermon we were bombarded by every woman & young girl, told how grateful they all were to have us, offered any kind of help imaginable & given a whole community of new friends. I was not aware that serving in the military was not viewed as a good thing so when I asked I openly admitted to both my husband & I serving in the US Army...oops! The traveling Pastor (Evangelist maybe) came up to me & spoke to me about growing up Baptist. His sermon was how Jesus was here to see and be with the sinners not perfect people. Haha, I felt so relieved & that he was talking to me... Then he told us a story called Guns or Frying Pans. It really stuck with me bcuz I currently work for a Criminal Defense Attorney & it's my job to interview clients or whatever even knowing that they have allegedly committed these terrible crimes. That story to me was a giant HELLO! I need to remember that it's God's want for us to be kind & bring ourselves & others to him not judge them. Sorry I always hijack your videos. I have learned so much from your channel & I'm so greatful that you & Nolan were able to do this video bcuz I feel it's helpful for my husband to witness (even via video) that men do not wear much other than a t-shirt & jeans. He grew up LDS, as most in Idaho & Utah have, but he is so supportive & willing to be what we both need to be closer to God. Sorry again that I comment novels on here 🤍 God bless you & your family!

I greatly enjoyed your "novel"! 😆 thanks for sharing! I'm now quite curious where your are from and what church you visited? Are you from Idaho? Nolan grew up out there and we know quite a few people in the state. 😀

@@theMennoniteMom Yes ma'am I am from Idaho. Born in Utah & raised in Idaho. My husband was born & raised in Utah but keeps being a good sport & we continue to live in Idaho because it's home. We are about an hour north of Logan, Utah. To go to Walmart we have to drive an hour to either Pocatello, ID or an hour to Logan, Utah. Most people here work in Logan as well... The church we attended is called New Hope Mennonite church. Would it be ok if I email you to chat more about some things on this topic? I have so many questions. I know you are a busy woman & I don't want to take away from what you have going on but I'd love to be able to chat more & not just take over your comment section 💜

I love this video, I think this was awesome y’all took the time to answer these questions. I found a lot of the Mennonite beliefs are just like my Baptist beliefs. Thank you for making this.

As a ex-Mennonite I went to Independent Baptist from Mennonites. Baptist beliefs in Salvation believe Once Saved Always Saved and allow divorce and remarriage. Where Mennonites beliefs you can lose your Salvation, and do not allow divorce and remarriage. There are many more differences in the two religions than what is known from the world looking in to the religion on either one.

One of the hardest things to deal with is that people are often less emotional and demonstrative because of their German background. A relatively new person may take it as a sign of rejection even though they are accepted. I think the biggest barrier is that ordinary Americans are less disciplined and don't want to be accountable to anyone. A church may want you, as a church member, to discuss major financial decisions with mature men in the church. Some people resent this practice, but very often if you follow sound counsel about debt and business, and things go wrong, they will help you avoid foreclosure or bankruptcy. However, if you make unwise decisions because you didn't consult anyone, they probably won't bail you out. Churches have differing practices, but consulting with key men about decisions before you join is a good idea. It helps you understand the ethics and mindset of the church -- and may reveal values and business practices that many don't find ethical. For example, I have a big problem with Rent-to-own portable buildings charging 36% interest or with people letting their property get foreclosed in a down market and then buying it back cheap at auction when you can afford the payments. I realize rent-to-own has risks, but today trackers are available so its not as risky as in the past. And some sellers don't lower the rate if you have a bigger down payment and good credit. To me, that is usury since it's a secured loan. A good church will have church standards that combat greed and materialism, while others allow extreme wealth and sketchy treatment of employers. The enemy of Anabaptism is individualism and taking a consumerist attitude toward spiritual things. Traditionally Anabaptists avoid entertainment and turn work, such as helping people move or repairing a burned building into a social occasion. The biggest pitfall is misplaced family loyalty that resists correction of family members going wrong or secrecy about serious sins. Many families don't have this problem, but some absolutely refuse to correct wayward teens and in consequence, other families leave and you have a church split. Often splits over trivial issues are just the beginning of certain people rejecting standards and church discipline altogether. The group that leaves may become very worldly in just a few years, even though the initial issue was the size of a veil or cap or cape dresses. People have to understand that Mennonites are Germans. The German culture likes rules and order. Many like rules to be hammered out in detail to help the young and immature know what is right. Germans believe in hard work and cleanliness. When the Mennonites formed in the 16th and 17th century, there was a strict dress code by social class and status in life. As recently as the early 20th century, married German women wore black routinely! Your dress reveals your group and status in life (young, old, married, single), rather than a matter of self a expression in traditional communities. These dress standards not only reinforce modestly, but also humility in dress and minimize differences in family wealth and consumerism. Often girls will wear the same dress as a close friend because they are buddies, something not usually done in general society. I recommend the Bible studies from Lamp and Light to understand the plain Mennonite mentality.
