I want other groups to follow Dreamcatcher's relationship with food. They say they eat 3 meals a day, unless they aren't feeling well, they eat before a performance so they have energy, 90% of their vlogs are of them eating or talking about eating. They're small and thin, but they're so muscular!! Handong's arms?! Yoohyeon's and Gahyeon's abs?!
I feel like I've seen more groups follow this trend in recent years- usually more established groups and not as much as Dreamcatcher but that could be because I don't really follow other groups. With how demanding their stages are, it's definitely required but it's nice to see companies treat their idols like humans. It definitely helps that Dreamcatcher's main audience are international (rock) fans and tbh we don't generally care about their weight as much as knetz do.
On Dami's section, I personally think her part in BOCA gained much attention from Somnias and other kpop fans (in part thanks to Insomnia's spread) is because not only of the iconic "I'm a geek the big paradox" line but the fact that her part came out of nowhere in the first verse, add that with the fist to the air 'Hold up!" moment. In the previous releases her part always come after the first chorus and this change up literally shakes the fandom.
Very true! The bass end of the percussion doesn't kick in until Dami's part. Up until then, the instrumental is all snare, light metallic clinks, and some very subtle guitar. It goes from extremely floaty to incredibly heavy in just a few seconds. That kind of contrast sticks out to a lot of people (me included, I love that stuff)
I am a big fan of the those underdog oddball groups like Mamamoo, G-Idle and Dreamcatcher. For me 3 of the best groups from Korea. They are unconventional, unpredictable and practically shook the stagnant Kpop music scene.
also, dreamcatcher's 7th anniversary is in one month in january, and being from a small company with such unusual and unique sound and visuals that is impressive. LONGEVITY is dreamcather's biggest weapon because no one is doing it like them and they aren't shy about their uncommon style and still every comeback is different than the last one without ever losing their identity.
Don’t forget dreamcatcher paved the way to primavera sound festival, this year is going to be red velvet. And the back story when organizer provide private jet so dreamcatcher can make it to perform just make it like a miracle story 👌🏼👏🏼👍🏻💯😘🥰
If there's one thing that I consistently notice when watching people's 'first look' reactions to Dreamcatcher it is that they pretty much all instantly love Dami's rapping voice. She is easily one of the main reasons that first time listeners start down the rabbit hole to Insomnia along with the obvious 'Oh my God, they're rock', Siyeon's magic throat and the general visual and sonic appeal that's just hard to deny. They'll realise there are so many other reasons to stick around, but it feels like that's the general gut punch moments for first timers.
Might be random bc I’m a big fan of both groups regarding having a world/international tour by their debut beside Dreamcatcher is KARD. Both groups rely more on international markets than their home Korean market. Dreamcatcher has that rock sound, KARD has that Latin sound, which it’s dominated more internationally than domesticity
The portion about dami, it reminded me of this clip of ryujin on mixnine i saw the other day, where the coaches were telling her to raise her pitch while she was rapping. Would have NEVER thought that anyone would have ever tried to change Ryujin’s rap voice. People didn’t just use their natural pitch, similar to how female idols in cute concepts would change their singing tone to sound more cute.
Actually...Dreamcatcher just celebrated their 6th anniversary in January 2023. They announced that they renewed their contracts last year during the European tour well in advance of their 7-year contract expiration. The fact that they renewed their contracts well in advance says a lot about how much they care and trust their company, imo. 😊Thanks for this video, it was great!
Their company is definitely one of the better ones out there from what I can tell. I remember how happy I was when I heard they were resigning early. Thanks for watching!
@@catchingteez DCC/HFE definitely is more of a family environment from the looks of it and I hope it stays that way. Year after year, we see and hear of idols being mistreated and mismanaged. One of those groups that I liked (GWSN) fell victim to severe mistreatment that they had no choice, but to sue their company and thankfully they won. DCC may not be as big as the other companies, but seeing the girls genuinely being treated well and r happy is good enough for me. 😃Thanks for creating awesome, entertaining content!
@@deukaebriqz2713 HFE is definitely one of the better companies from what we can see with how they create a friendly work environment, but I do hope they can improve more when it comes to managing their artists. I wasn’t into the way they sexualized the girls during the Minx days, and they totally dropped the ball with managing D1CE, and that whole issue with the nft before Dreamcatcher’s relase was kinda ironic. Everything is a learning experience though and I’m happy that the girls renewed. Shows how much faith they have in one another.
@@gabbbyperezz I understand how u feel abt their past, but honestly, I've never heard anyone of them complain abt feeling 'sexualized' when they were Minx, so I won't either. Just be glad that we don't hear negative things abt them and the company. No company is perfect, but DCC/HFE comes close, imo. Their CEO never gave up on them when other companies prolly would've disbanded them after not hitting it off after they debuted as Minx, but the fact he was also willing re-debut them and was willing to set up a cucumber farm for them if DC didn't do well was really touching. Nowhere will u hear of CEOs looking after their idols that way. At least I've never heard one like their CEOnim. 😊
@@catchingteez RQ also just released a collab with AleXa. By the way, let's talk influence of AleXa here. She's friends with Dreamcatcher and a fan often shouting them out at her concerts and vlogs, there is no doubt they influenced her as well.
Brilliant summing up of the story so far. Am a massive fan of DC - from the u.k. Have every song/ video, poster, photobooks, datapacks, they have released and seen them live three times. I used to play guitar in a rock band, so, their ‘sound’ really appealed to me - and Siyeon’s voice is exceptional(she also has the most amazing eyes), although, all the girls are very talented. Always liked their concepts and the matching dance outfits are quite stunning. Time to listen to Dreamnote! 👍😎👍
OMG I KNEW YOUR NAME LOOKED FAMILIAR LOL but sameee Dreamcatcher is one of my ult groups and I’m so glad I had the oppourtunity to see them and meet them in person !! Siyeon was amazing live her high notes were amazing and I hope to see Dreamcatcher again for their next tour🫶
They're really a nutso live group. I mean, I'd go to their concert just so I can break my vocal chords doing that scream in the background before the hook in Scream without anyone being able to question me, because that sound is my mental state summarized lol. But then they also perform at god level and have fun with the audience. And they have rly hype setlists these days, I can't believe we're getting Silent Night at like every concert now!
I'd like to give a shout out to & also mention "Rolling Quartz" here. NOT K-Pop group, but an actual rock group, who are very, very good. But they were also influenced by DC, & the members are big fans, who also did an amazing rock cover of DC's "Good Night"! So, DC has influenced actual all girl rock groups. Also RQ & DC share some fans who've been begging for a collab!
I LOVE them!! I love their style and sound and you can see the dreamcatcher influence. I think it's amazing how influential dreamcatcher has become. And Rolling Quartz is a great next step for people who were introduced to rock music through dreamcatcher and are curious about the genre :) I personally have always loved rock music and it's been my favourite genre since childhood and I adore Rolling Quartz. I just love a good girl band. I have followed them since debut and I'm so glad they seem to be gaining some traction :D Another band I love is Synsnake. They combine kpop vocals with metalcore and I'm absolutely obsessed. Might not be for everyone but if you like metalcore even a little bit go check them out!!!!
This was great! Dreamcatcher has definitely made major contributions to the industry, and it’s undeniable. What’s crazy is that even though there’s a rock trend and darker concepts have become more popular, nobody does it like Dreamcatcher. They’re in they’re own lane, and they can only be outdone by themselves. It’s really good spot to be in as artists but especially idols, since they’re always being compared to next hottest trend or group.
To add to the point of international market: I've waited years for 2ne1 or any other girl group to come to Europe, and Dreamcatcher does it within the first 1.5 years! Idk if there were other gg, but I can't think of any that came to Europe before them.
Yes indeed, they crawled on rock so others can run, and more people should know this by now, as well as other artists, as someone else said "just because they are lesser known doesn't mean they are lesser than the famous ones"
I'm also a somniatiny, so when I came across your channel I was really happy ❤ The fact Dreamcatcher is still together as a group and is thriving is truly so amazing. There really was no one like them when they debuted and they're still here absolutely smashing it. Video recommendation: Mera's 'The Cinema of Dreamcatcher.' If you haven't watched it already, I highly recommend! More Dreamcatcher discourse is always nice to see.
Thank you for making this video! It's something I've thought about for a while now. A lot of kpop stans undervalue how much dreamcatcher has influenced the industry, often they say that they're not popular enough to influence anything but when you look at how they started gaining a lot of popularity in 2020 with scream and boca and then look at the changes in the industry in 2021 and later, you start to see a lot of dreamcatcher's influence. I'm certain that if dreamcatcher didn't exist then the landscape of 4th gen groups would look pretty different. I don't think Dreamcatcher is the sole reason for rock taking off in kpop recently but I think they are a pretty significant catalyst. In the same vein I think Dreamcatcher has proven to other "nugu companies" that you don't need massive mainstream success or a "hit song" in order to make a successful group. Dreamcatcher have proven that having a small but dedicated fanbase that slowly grows over time is another way to find success.
Dreamcatcher opened the door to newer gen of girl groups from bigger company & smaller/ new company to do something different within the industry...Dreamcatcher's name might not as big as artist from The Big 4 labels, but surely one day they will be a legendary group...their music style united both casual K-Pop listener & Rock/ Metal listener from all ages & gender all over the world, InSomnia might be one of the most diverse fandom in K-Pop industry..Dreamcatcher are the new turning point of K-Pop...
deukae are one of my ults and i still remember just screaming across my room when they got their first AND SECOND wins last year. it was such sweet revenge for piri and deja vu, though frankly all of their tts are worth many award show wins. i see great things coming their way this year. also i feel you on using them as a “gateway” kpop group lol. i feel people do not realise that kpop is not really a genre but an industry. bcs frankly, there is no way ateez, twice and aespa, for example, would ever be put in the same category if they were western acts. it’s a stereotype that i genuinely feel is laced with something else. but oh well, don’t mind my little rant lol edit: grammar errors
I am actually an overseas fan myself! What I say about the Korean general public are things I've gleaned from knetz and what I've observed from the different preferences in the markets. It's shocking how much you can learn just by looking at what charts where
Fell in love with Dreamcatcher the moment I heard Deja Vu for the first time. Not only are they the only Korean group I consistently listen to, but they're my favourite artist in general. Absolutely agree that they're tried & true pioneers within the K-pop scene (and perhaps far beyond) 💜 Speaking of, what's everyone's *favourite Dreamcatcher song?*
its a tough question, since I cant pinpoint the sole song to pin it. They produce music that suit my taste overall. But I can say i always turn Silent Night first when i commute to work.
Sometimes I think it's a copout to say Deja Vu, and I should be repping my top picks that are underrated by the fandom, like Scar and Over The Sky, even though they're not my top choices. But then... Deja Vu is just simply the best. Like how can I ever not pick it.
It's rad, I have friends that don't listen to Dreamcatcher at all but they're still like "oh yea those girls are sick" lol. Non-Somnies even know the power they hold 🙌
For a group that talented they are so underrated especially in Korea. They have everything wrong vocals, dance, rap to visuals. Really don’t know why Korea does not like Dreamcatcher and then they complain that every group sounds alike when they don’t even support someone with an unique sound.
Agree with all points.... Few more things to consider... 1. Good songs can carry you only so far...but good talents can last for generations... 2. If DC came from big labels, I don't think they would have lasted this long... The passion for their craft and support/love for one another when they went through some tough times made them stand against the "time" of K-POP... Most band don't survive their initial contracts... 3. DCC's CEO... I think most of InSomnias already know the story of the CEO... but his faith in these girls really paid off and now he looks like a mad genius "scientist"... One article I read, he said that many of his "friends" in the industry told him to just give up... Even tried to recruit/steal several members from DC... (he didn't say which members, but I suspect Yoohyeon, Jiu and Siyeon???)
If you watch how YG looked at JiU in MIXNINE, you can really tell what happened there. And it's probably one of the reasons why Dreamcatcher booked 4 shows in Brazil, before this disaster called a show, ended. At least, it left us with amazing memes, like JiU's and Ryujin's Benefit Team destroying the arrogant and insolent boys team.
Dreamcatcher and (G)I-DLE are my ult groups. They stray away from the usual kpop concept formula for girl groups and are not afraid to try things people might receive badly while SLAYING it. Both are pioneer groups in kpop. They also have great rappers (Dami, Soyeon). Most of their bsides are gems too. Also gidle being mostly self produced and often arranging, composing songs as well is quite new for girl groups . Most girlgroups only had credits in the writing aspect before or no credits at all. Truly the best groups out there at the moment.
As much as I hate to say it, but the reason for prosperity (G)I-DLE - Soyeon. And Cube is just a lazy ass who doesn't appreciate her artists.. I will never forgive them for how simply they threw away such precious pearls as 4minute first, and then CLC!
I literally got into kpop because of Dreamcatcher's Scream and I still use this song today to introduce other people to kpop. If it wasn't for the girlies rock sound and amazing concept catching my attention, my life would be so lacking now. Their concert was the best one I've ever been to.
@@피리를-불어라 I called them the "Three P's" : Purple Kiss, Pixy and Pink Fantasy. Three groups that probably wouldn't have existed as they do without DC leading the way. Not saying they are DC clones, they are unique in their own way. DC did show the world that being unique can pay off, not necessarily BTS level, but enough to live your dream and be comfortable doing it. Looks like Purple Kiss is pulling it off, not sure if Pixy and Pink Fantasy are pulling the numbers they need to survive... I hope they do!
@@JGM0JGM Its funny, you know these groups are inspired by Dreamcatcher not just because they make similar creative choices, but because their members seem to be huge Dreamcatcher fangirls lol. Like there's this amazing clip of some Purple Kiss members doing a dance challenge backstage at a music show with some Dreamcatcher members, and at the end Siyeon does so little as to make eye contact with one of the Purple Kiss members and she just about dies on the spot lmao. They're so relatable 😂
One addition to the related groups, Billlie's previous comeback Ring ma Bell with its strong punk rock influence and the thematics in the music video with the horror of being chased is very reminiscent
Also have to give a shoutout to the marketing/promo team for their consistent contents and most importantly, ENG SUBS! I really do think all smaller companies should take a leaf out of this and eng sub all their contents because they'll get a bigger outreach that way
I became an InSomnia in 2019 and can’t believe it’s been so long. You make some amazing points about the unique mark Dreamcatcher has made on the industry, especially regarding their focus on international marketing and touring. They endeared themselves to international fans from the very beginning when it seemed like they were being ignored by the domestic market. ATEEZ has a similar story and I can’t believe I never connected the two. Honestly, there are so many parallels between these two groups 😅
We don’t talk enough about Dreamcatcher b-sides: their b-sides truly show that they can pull any sound (please check their b-sides if you haven’t yet) And how good of dancers they are. 7 members who are great singers dancers and they can do pretty much everything from writing songs composing producing choreography they are even good at acting and editing Queens
You know what I wished other groups would benefit from, too? The member's very thin / loose filter. I don't know if it got better, but It seems at some time between my short contact with K-Pop during second gen and me listening to it a lot since literally Jan. 1st last year (I am a perfect example of someone who rarely touches even Pop general and got caught by Dreamcatcher) Idols had to be even more careful about their public image, how they talk, don't show your bare face, etc. Dreamcatcher is not unaffected by this and everybody is different in front of a camera, but it doesn't feel forced to me and in general they can speak their mind and are able to act like the people they are. Of course they are not the only ones and not the first, but it was part of what made me a fan. It is actually the reason why they will always be my ult and even if I like a group as performers and in terms of music just as much (shoutout to my other ults Billlie), Dreamcatcher will always be slightly above in my head because of the parasocial feeling that what you see is who they actually are. Maybe I am talking nonsense and everything isn't as strict as I think it is, maybe it depends on companies, but that thought came to mind.
glad to see my ults being appreciated like this!! they're such an important group in kpop and their impact tends to be ignored, especially by bg stans.
the thing is, dreamcatcher is also special, because they blend not just metal and rock sounds, but just harder music overall in their music, like psytrance and trap in Into the Frozen or Dubstep with Wind Blows and many more experimental stuff in their non title tracks. Its just amazing
I just realized that your channel is basically brand new. Holy shit. The production value of your videos is INCREDIBLE and your points are succinct and clear. You already sound comfortable doing voice overs. That´s seriously impressive. I can´t wait to see where your channel is going to be this time next year!
Dreamcatcher horror concept is amazing, even in their currents title tracks they have it, they're currently touching the horror of humanity: Apocalypse = destroying our own planet without care. They totally have one of the most dedicated fanbase ever, InSomnia really work hard. Since their debut they have always work hard along side DCC to promote them. In every fandom I go to I always find a InSomnia promoting the girls somehow 😂 as a Somnia myself I'm proud of that!
I'm not sure if others feel the same way but what is also great about Dreamcatcher's music are the lyrics. I feel like girl group songs are forced to be about love/relationships, however Dreamcatcher only has 1 title track about love but it's obviously twisted and not a normal love. Their discography is also pretty diverse and pretty much do all genres. I've always told people even if you don't "like" the rock sound, there is a Dreamcatcher song for you. We are also very fortunate that for a group that has been around as long as them that the company has kept them active. I was thinking about this the other day, they went from having to perform covers at their concerts to having to really choose their set list since they have so many songs now.
Really liked this discussion, especially about Dreamcatcher in SK and the groups that they have influences. Also, I discovered Ateez because of Dreamcatcher, once I realized about the overlap in producers and composers. Maybe a comparison of their respective lores could be interesting.
I rly wish Leez and Oullounder could convince Eden to produce for Deukae some time. I just think a Deukae song made with the completely batshit insane compositional choices Eden makes with Ateez songs would be absolutely godlike.
@@plasmakitten4261 Maybe it will, or it could be someone else. Because LEEZ is now engaged in another project and we don't know how busy he is still with music for DC. I'm a little scared because of this, but I'm also excited about the likely updated Dreamcatcher sound
This is such an interesting analysis. I really think so many people forgot how most of the time big companies copy Nugu groups and get the credit for it. Like I had seen so many people who will be XYZ bring the wave in Kpop and Rock. But no one would have been ready for the change if it wasn't Dreamcatcher doing the exact same for years. As for the horror concept i do agree many groups have done that, but DC sticks to that concept. Till 2021 if you asked anyone about the horror/dark concept you would immediately think of Dreamcatcher. And now many 4th gen ggs debut with Dark concept I also love how they proved that you can stick with a concept and sound and still do something new every time. I have seen many people calling them all DC songs sounds the same? Like please they need to check their ears. Put any two DC title track both will have rock in it but will be so different from each other I really love how you pointed out that, DC really proved everyone wrong that you can survive without the domestic recognition. Like DC is one of the only 3rd gen groups who are active and renewed their contracts. As an InSomnia for like 3 years, I sometimes get angry with DCC for their poor decisions, but bless their souls for keeping the members in safe and healthy environment. For a small company they did exceptionally well
Come from metalhead POV here and the 1st time I ever listened to DC was that they're not trying so hard to prove themselves that they're this Heavy Rockin Group, they slayed it beautifully and that's what makes me love them. Really appreciate how they can bring some heavy riffs on their music!
my friend sent this to me and you have no idea how excited i got because SOMEONE WAS TALKING ABOUT MY GIRLS!!!!!! also i will definitely look into ateez now lmao, i've been meaning to for a while but got kinda lazy also THANK YOU SO MUCH for the recs at the end!!!! i've been trying to find groups with similar music and concepts (because there's only so many times you can repeat the entire discography lmao) and these really helped!!!
A part of me believes, Dreamcatcher sound is not only inspired by the huge sucess of the japanese group Baby Metal a few years back is also inspired by the whole wave of female metal vocalist from europe wich started back in 1992 and after 2007 have their international sucess but keep kind of underground outside europe: Within Temptation, Epica, and for some reason, Dreamcatcher sound remind me a lot to Amaranthe sound, maybe with the difference of the male voices between the female one. Something wich is true, Dreamcatcher is the bridge between kpop fans to rock/metal fans wich never thought (me as a example) heard kpop, actually I found the group in a metal fans page cause somebody recomended it for fans of certain bands I mentioned before, and as I said, it was my bridge to start hear more kpop.
I totally agree with this. As myself not being a fan of kpop despite all my friends trying to get me into it, I always thought it's too cheery and cutsie for my style, but dreamcatcher's vibe is so different and I just loveddddd it.
Saving this to watch later. Your subject looks so interesting; something I've been thinking about for some time and wondering why there wasn't more recognition. After Dreamcatcher broke down some walls, a lot of new things became acceptable, even popular in kpop, allowing girl groups to take new directions. Even while Dreamcatcher itself hasn't gotten the commensurate rewards.
There is one group that I'm sad (disappointed) they didn't stay with the horror concept is Nature, I was really excited when I watched their MV for Girls because it was so well done.
This was so well put together! I loved the whole video! Definitely subbing! As far as Pink Fantasy’s marketing goes… What marketing? Lol Okay, I love how MyDoll Entertainment cares about their idols. But they’re not the most financially stable company out there. They do focus more on the Korean public though. Watch any PF content and… They NEVER include English captions! 😭 And as far as DreamNote goes, I’m sure that you’ve seen by now that their comeback was a cute one. I’m shocked that it outperformed “Ghost” era. But I’m still proud of them! Also, I’d throw in Nature to this list. If it wasn’t for Dreamcatcher, I don’t think we’d see “Girls”, “Limbo”, or “Oopsy”. Oh, and I can’t talk about Dreamcatcher’s contribution without mentioning Rolling Quartz. An all female KRock band? We love to see it! And idk how directly it was, but I’d like to think that Dreamcatcher and Blackpink had some influence on Majors’ sound mainly consisting of EDM stems (very Alan Walker meets Alesso esque) when you really don’t see that anywhere else in KPop. Anyways, I can’t wait to watch your other vids! ❤️
Oooh I loved this video, it also made me think, another major example of causing such a major shift is Loona! I feel like their impact is almost more ignored than DC’s for a variety of reasons, including their tumultuous history. But their music has drastically shifted the kpop soundscape to the point of being in academic literature on kpo. They set a new standard for international success that only groups like NewJeans have managed to meet. Their Korean nickname was “record breaking girls” for a reason. Their aesthetic and MV’s have literally entirely changed how kpop music videos are made and conceptualized (the slow shift to cinematic realism). Not to mention their contract dispute and how they left BBC has lead into a new wave of idols rightfully asking for what they’re owed. Dreamcatcher definitely started this footrace and they passed the baton onto loona who are taking it to places DC just literally hasn’t had to. It’s amazing to see tbh. EDIT; I forgot to mention! Their debut system fundamentally changed how debuts are done. Before loona you’d be hard pressed to find groups introducing each member and their talents with a clip, let alone dedicated predebut content. But it is quickly becoming the standard and I personally think kpop is better for it.
I checked and yes 1NB debuted shortly after Dreamcatcher. though they didn't lasted long and only have two songs/mv's they so freaking interesting. I can see Dreamcatcher influence but they committed to the horror to the extent I've never seen in kpop before or after. seriously, their mv's are like horror short films with music. check them out if you can stand the genre. I can call their concept " let's make men that wrong us suffer". sooo yeah they have one of my favourite mv's in the industry. I wish I could see more of them. but I guess the public wasn't ready yet. plus their output doesn't even have subtitles and you know what it means - they probably set their eyes on the domestic market :(( ps thank you for making this video!
Dreamcatcher are in the same branch as Gfriend, but they branch out with more metal than classical and more dark colors in every aspect (Timbre, visuals et cetera). Both share this kind of sound pattern that people associate with animes. Both are the only groups I listen to in Kpop.
Overall i don't follow girl groups but Dreamcatcher is the one i keep my eyes on constantly, i absolutely love their rock, heavy concept. I will check the groups you talked about in this video for sure! i only know Pink Fantasy and i think they are awesome.
as someone who was obsessed with anime at the time dreamcatcher released chase me, i was immediately hooked because it sounded like an opening to a shonen show and i used to tell my friends the same thing as well. also i think there is absolutely no coincidence that ppl who like dreamcatcher also like ateez. they're both my ults and i just saw ateez live a few weeks ago and bought tickets for dreamcatcher in november lol
For going and focusin overseas. I think KARA is doung it 1st although its only in Japan. But yet they are the 1 that being aolid there before comeback to Kr
A THREAD ABOUT SOME OF THE RELATED GROUPS CAUSE I LOVE THEM Another thing to add about Pink Fantasy! Even before their heavy metal screaming sound and in-your-face horror concept with Poison, they were already doing a J-Rock/J-Pop kind of sound and light horror concept. They're not merely copying Dreamcatcher, they've got their own thing going on that I'm sure fellow Somnies would like! And for those that don't know, J-pop grew from Japan's take on US rock music, unlike K-pop which grew from Korea's take on US hip-hop and R&B. It's a very different yet still familiar sound.
PIXY IS AMAZING YALL!!!! I just saw them live a couple days ago so I might be biased but their talent is no joke and their choreos are insane. Even though their original low-voiced rapper/vocalist left the group, they did bring in another member to fill her role and she has been killing it. Their music has been moving further and further away from their debut sound, though, and it might not be everyone's taste.
Nothing to add about Purple Kiss, they're a thriller-concept group that makes it their own with a more soft and elegant take. Killer vocals and music composition and production chops, too. Major respect from me as a musician
Ok to be fair, I know nothing about Primrose. I too obsessed over Ghost for months. When it first came up on Spotify, I literally thought "wait how have I as a 2-year DC stan never heard of this song???" Turns out it's not DC but still a damn good song anyway. Haven't checked out their other stuff but I've been meaning to.
Everglow's First was super sick and also sounds kinda like a DC rejected song. They absolutely made it their own and killed it though. Not as big a fan of their other songs, the chorus lyrics tend to make me cringe a bit too much. But the music itself goes hard. IDLE's "I Never Die" album. That's all Somnies need to know. Besides that, killer rap and vocals, and Soyeon's a creative powerhouse. I honestly believe she's one of very few in the industry creating art, not merely commodities. Not to mention Dongie and Shuhua, as well as Yuqi and Sua are good friends, and Shuhua is especially vocal about her political/social views which seem to match many DC members.
As a DC/EG Stan, I appreciate the comments about their past. What happened wasn't the fault of either group, but they're the ones that suffered for it. EG knows their first "win" wasn't legit which is why they were so emotional when they finally won with "First." EG is rumoured for a May comeback, but I hope they don't have to compete with DC again. Not because I don't want them to interact; I do ,but because I want them both to win. I wish EG could leave their current company and join Happyface Ent. Thanks for the vid.
I agree, Deja Vu was the last MV completely with real scenery, and it was amazing. A bit of graphics in the Dystopia series didn't really look bad either. But the MV from the Apocalypse series really looks weirdly. Full shooting on a green screen definitely complicates the understanding of what is happening for girls. Also the graphics look like they are of low resolution without shadows from objects or with inappropriate shadows. I even think that all this graphics are even more expensive to produce than regular shooting. It's a little disappointing.. I hope in the future they will return to the real scenery again..
I would say that Moonbyul had the biggest influence on deep voiced rappers. They debuted first and are very well respected in Korea, especially by other idols. If anything, I think Dami was influenced by her, to lower her tone compared to her Minx days and even Chase Me. Good Night is the true beginning of her deeper rapping.
This is a really good video! I think something else that is interesting too is that Dami is also a Purple Kiss fan, she talked about listening to them in one of their Notes a while ago, maybe right when they Debuted or shortly thereafter. I only recently found DC, like a little over a month ago. I just started my own YT reaction review channel channel trying to spread the music of DC BEcause they deserve to be heard and to hopefully find more groups like DC. BlackPink was my entry to K-pop and just before DC I found XG. DC is my Ult, I am a rock, edm, and horror fan so it was the perfect sound for me and I have listened to every single song multiple times and reviewing them again on my channel while patiently waiting for their May comeback. The one thing that does sort of confuse me on SK's aversion to rock is they love Michael Jackson, and from what I can tell, from what little K-pop I have been exposed to, he was a huge inspiration for K-pop to begin with. MJ had a lot of rock elements in his music, especially in his first 2 - 3 albums and sprinkled throughout the rest of his career (which Leez and Ollounder are inspired by in Sleep-walking and sample in Black or White). I can't seem to understand that and haven't been able to find any explanation.
I myself have introduced them to my friends and my cousin, and they basically immediately clicked with their music, also a lot of Groups are like friends with them and inspired them to change a bit to show they can do other things to.
You know what relatively new group is following the same path that Dreamcatcher pioneered, but doing it in their own distinct way? XG. Deukae has their signature rock sound, deliberately aimed at the foreign audience who likes that style, and stuck to their guns until they finally found big success. XG has their signature hip-hop/R&B sound, their CEO has outright said that their main audience is the global market (all their songs are 100% in English), and their latest comeback went viral in the west, which puts them on track to make it big going forward. I even get the same found family vibe from them that I get from Deukae because all the members trained together for five solid years before debut. Being a fan of both groups is just so goddamn positive and wholesome, and the fan communities are really welcoming, to boot. I'll never stan any group as hard as I stan Deukae, but XG is fantastic and I'm looking forward to them bring more of their unique and awesome element to the industry. It's groups like these two that make me love K-pop.
i just had my dad listen to the first album and he's intrigued (he doesn't listen to kpop/ korean music) this would be a great video to show a new insomnia! ty
3:08 I'm kind of in the same situation, but unlike the people around you, the people around me 1. don't like rock sound or horror/dark concept as much, 2. Care way more about the language barrier than the good music(I shared Polaris with someone, and they said the tune was nice, but the language prevented them from vibing with the song🙃). Except from one other kpop listener who listens to them, and some other kpop fans who are interested in a new kpop group, I have not been able to convince anyone else🥲
I grew up us a rocker and was playing drums in the late '70s and more punk and darker industrial stuff as I went (plus always a world music fan so worked with some early Japanese noise bands like Boredoms when in NY). Japan has always had a strong (and weird) rock tradition and supported many small niche groups (Lolli-goth screamo metal idols seem to be prolific now). In 2015 I discovered BabyMetal and Band Maid and later Gacharic Spin and Brats (etc.) and was really impressed by the level of musicianship. Sometimes I felt the vocals were perfect, other times my western ear found them annoyingly high, but I felt it all fit in with my existing traditions. Around 2020 someone suggested checking out Dreamcatcher if I was into the Kawaii Metal stuff and it was off to the races! I had no concept of Kpop (other than Psy) at that time so it was a whole new world that I really wasn't getting into. Then I accidentally stumbled upon ( )I-Dle's Lion. Then Oh My God. Now I watch everything they do (including their NY show last year) and know all their songs! Coming from an original edition punk, they (particularly Soyeon) totally have figured out the DIY budget creative attitude within the tight constrictures of the Kpop industry. So totally agree, Dreamcatcher was really a groundbreaker (and in more levels than I've thought , as you showed). I like your videos. Good interpreter of Kpop for Boomers!
I'm floating. Just watched the VOD of the Apocalypse Halloween concert in Seoul again. I hope a lot of people got the chance to get it when it was on sale. Everything you said about the pre-dreamcatcher girl group swamp in kpop resonates with me. There's a ton of talent in kpop, but everything depends on what is done with that talent. I'm impressed with the whole Dreamcatcher ethos and community (not talking about the Somnias here) where there's so much love and mutual support in the risk taking that they do. Like some of the better corners of rock and metal that tackle difficult social, moral and political themes on the regular - in a good way. This includes all of Dreamcatcher's art from song writing, composing, choreography, outfits, makeup... I'd love to be the fly on the wall and see what kind of debate, argument and resolution goes on to elaborate their themes. In your discussion of Dami, you neglected Moonbyul. Much respect to you for fleshing out so many details. Excited about their comeback. I've seen them twice now in less than a year, and hoping they will tour Asia and Latin America sometime soon. I'm interested in most of the groups you mentioned and were mentioned in the comments. Have you listened to the Japanese band Lovebites? New album is Judgment Day. Totally different genre here than what I thought i world enjoy, but compelling because these 5 women are world class musicians. A reviewer said "There's no shame in having a formula when it smashes everything to bits like this."
Yes I agree about the groups you listed. I follow them specifically because they remind me of dreamcatcher. I would add rolling quartz to that list. They're an all girl kpop rock band and have even covered good night
Also, I can't believe you missed Rolling Quartz on your list of groups influenced by DC. They did a complete cover of "Goodnight" even going as far as making their own MV version of it. With permission, of course. DC & RQ producers(?) are connected as are HanDong and YeongEun, the drummer for RQ. Please check it out.
RQ's cover turned up the rock to 11 on the dial, with their own guitar solos (they have 2 guitarists, so you get 2 solos), while preserving the original song for the most part. I don't know much about that band, but that's kinda cool that a true rock band is influenced by a kpop group -- now, how many groups can do that? (Actually, did you see RQ's mashup "cover" of Blackpink's Pink Venom with BTS's Mic Drop? ruclips.net/video/geSy4yOLfl8/видео.html That was pretty fire too!)
i might be tripping but as far as i remember, before the dc dystopia trilogy, i dont think i really heard songs from other groups having song structures similar to scream-boca (and some other dc songs) with slower prechorus and bridge with a totally different melody up until post dystopia era
I read somewhere that DC's music uses 4536 chord progression, which is very popular in japanese music. Don't know if it's true because I know almost nothing about music theory, but their CEO himself said he's a huge fan of japanese music
Thinking about that song structure thing has me tripping too. I feel like I should easily be able to come up with an example of that before DC but I can't. About the chord progression, I would buy it. DC had an incredibly strong Japanese rock influence in their early days
I would say the only other group that went all in on the international side was kard when they debuted in 2016 but I'm not sure if that was intentional or just due to the fact that their music caught on really big in south America
The talent, the music, the concept, the attitude, they have everything that I love. I'm so proud of them. Mad respect to their company and CEO, yes no one is perfect, they've done bad decisions but they make sure that they learned from it so here we are. Another more yrs of having Dreamcatcher. Dreamcatcher is such an inspiration for a lot of us. Never give up because of failures. "Dream it and Do it" - Endless night by Dreamcatcher
Really Enjoyed this Vid. Not only am I fan of Dreamcatcher... Everglow and Purple Kiss have my full attention as well. One group you may enjoy, that is Rock Music, if not Metal as well... is Rolling Quartz. One member of the group, is a Die Hard fan of Dreamcatcher, and Rolling Quartz , has done a cover of there's , Good Night. The Music Vid for it is Awesome too!
Them leaving mixnine to go on a world tour is the most *I don’t care* moment in K-pop history
Dreamcatcher is the BRIDGE between Rock and KPOP
I am a big fan of the those underdog oddball groups like Mamamoo, G-Idle and Dreamcatcher. For me 3 of the best groups from Korea. They are unconventional, unpredictable and practically shook the stagnant Kpop music scene.
gidle isn’t an underdog group tbh
@@adrianho2690 compare to the groups from the big 3, they still are IMO
@@adrianho2690 I guess you could say they aren’t the underdogs anymore, but they were for a very long time
ooh.. you named my 3 faves 😊
Mamamoo and Dreamcatcher are my ults and I-dle (also Twice) are my number 1 😊
also, dreamcatcher's 7th anniversary is in one month in january, and being from a small company with such unusual and unique sound and visuals that is impressive.
Big fan of Kard too. They have several excellent albums.
Thank god Ryujin stuck with her natural voice. I would have cried if they never let her sing or rap low
Dreamcatcher are my ults and I’m so glad I got to see them live ❤️Siyeon will forever remain my favorite high note hitter
ulting deukae one of the best decisions of my life, now i have to actually go see them
I saw them live this past month and wow Siyeon blew me away even more than I thought she would
OMG I KNEW YOUR NAME LOOKED FAMILIAR LOL but sameee Dreamcatcher is one of my ult groups and I’m so glad I had the oppourtunity to see them and meet them in person !! Siyeon was amazing live her high notes were amazing and I hope to see Dreamcatcher again for their next tour🫶
@@catchingteez I also saw them last month, maybe even in the same place
And Rolling Quartz is a great next step for people who were introduced to rock music through dreamcatcher and are curious about the genre :)
I personally have always loved rock music and it's been my favourite genre since childhood and I adore Rolling Quartz. I just love a good girl band. I have followed them since debut and I'm so glad they seem to be gaining some traction :D
Another band I love is Synsnake. They combine kpop vocals with metalcore and I'm absolutely obsessed. Might not be for everyone but if you like metalcore even a little bit go check them out!!!!
I'm such a fool for forgetting them. A collab between those two would be awesome!
We need a Collab..
@@DrillOnABeat I think we are all waiting for it. 😁
Good call. They are touring the US soon and they have had to add shows and move to larger venues. Great sign!
I love this! Best thing I did was tell the world that I’m a metalhead who loves kpop and Dreamcatcher is my “REASON.”
Somniatiny unite! And omg I love Mera so much. That video is fantastic
Dreamcatcher opened the door to newer gen of girl groups from bigger company & smaller/ new company to do something different within the industry...Dreamcatcher's name might not as big as artist from The Big 4 labels, but surely one day they will be a legendary group...their music style united both casual K-Pop listener & Rock/ Metal listener from all ages & gender all over the world, InSomnia might be one of the most diverse fandom in K-Pop industry..Dreamcatcher are the new turning point of K-Pop...
deukae are one of my ults and i still remember just screaming across my room when they got their first AND SECOND wins last year. it was such sweet revenge for piri and deja vu, though frankly all of their tts are worth many award show wins. i see great things coming their way this year.
also i feel you on using them as a “gateway” kpop group lol. i feel people do not realise that kpop is not really a genre but an industry. bcs frankly, there is no way ateez, twice and aespa, for example, would ever be put in the same category if they were western acts. it’s a stereotype that i genuinely feel is laced with something else. but oh well, don’t mind my little rant lol
edit: grammar errors
Thank you for this. We overseas fans aren't in touch with all the intricacies of the industry.
Absolutely agree that they're tried & true pioneers within the K-pop scene (and perhaps far beyond) 💜
Speaking of, what's everyone's *favourite Dreamcatcher song?*
I can never settle on just one. I've been blasting Reason for the past couple weeks but Scream will always have a special place in my heart
its a tough question, since I cant pinpoint the sole song to pin it. They produce music that suit my taste overall.
But I can say i always turn Silent Night first when i commute to work.
That’s a dangerous question lol. I don’t have a single fave, but a healthy rotating list.
- You and I
- Spider
- Because
- Boca
- Eclipse
- Scream
Deja Vu is the easy answer. But Scream and Boca are right there and I’ve always been a huge fan of Red Sun.
Sometimes I think it's a copout to say Deja Vu, and I should be repping my top picks that are underrated by the fandom, like Scar and Over The Sky, even though they're not my top choices. But then... Deja Vu is just simply the best. Like how can I ever not pick it.
every deukae member is incredibly skilled and i love them dearly, i LOVE it when ppl recognize how important they r!!
@@roseblue_ and don't forget siyeon in group performance is like having commanding haki for this out of tune rest of performer 😅
I'm so happy that even though Gahyeon passed SM and YG's auditions, she decided to go with HappyFace Ent. and join Dreamcatcher 🥹🥹

It also helps that ateez and dreamcatcher have the same composers. Thx to leez and ollounder for amazing tracks too.
I've been a somnie for a while but I just started getting into Purple Kiss because of the similarities to Deukae. Super good stuff
You may enjoy ‘PIXY’ as well, if you aren’t already following them. Horror theme with a Darkwave vibe.
@@CrucibleBlack13 I'm only vaguely familiar with Pixy so I'll definitely check em out this weekend, good lookin out 😉
@@피리를-불어라 I called them the "Three P's" : Purple Kiss, Pixy and Pink Fantasy.
I love Ring Ma Bell. One of the few from the punk rock trend that I think really nailed it
Also have to give a shoutout to the marketing/promo team for their consistent contents and most importantly, ENG SUBS!
I guess you could say dreamcatcher…broke the wall? (I’ll see myself out now)
We don’t talk enough about Dreamcatcher b-sides: their b-sides truly show that they can pull any sound (please check their b-sides if you haven’t yet)
And how good of dancers they are. 7 members who are great singers dancers and they can do pretty much everything from writing songs composing producing choreography they are even good at acting and editing
Queens
Dystopia: The Tree of Language has to be one of my all time favorite albums. Banger after banger and so many different genres covered
Dreamcatcher are so amazing, saw both their concerts when they came to New York.
talking about music and concepts. Dreamcatcher is really unique in kpop
glad to see my ults being appreciated like this!! they're such an important group in kpop and their impact tends to be ignored, especially by bg stans.
the thing is, dreamcatcher is also special, because they blend not just metal and rock sounds, but just harder music overall in their music, like psytrance and trap in Into the Frozen or Dubstep with Wind Blows and many more experimental stuff in their non title tracks.
DCC has an excellent team top to bottom. Song writing/production, choreography, video directors, show planning, and of course the 7 Queens
And now many 4th gen ggs debut with Dark concept
I also love how they proved that you can stick with a concept and sound and still do something new every time. I have seen many people calling them all DC songs sounds the same? Like please they need to check their ears. Put any two DC title track both will have rock in it but will be so different from each other
I really love how you pointed out that, DC really proved everyone wrong that you can survive without the domestic recognition.
Like DC is one of the only 3rd gen groups who are active and renewed their contracts.
As an InSomnia for like 3 years, I sometimes get angry with DCC for their poor decisions, but bless their souls for keeping the members in safe and healthy environment. For a small company they did exceptionally well
i love dreamcatcher
Come from metalhead POV here and the 1st time I ever listened to DC was that they're not trying so hard to prove themselves that they're this Heavy Rockin Group, they slayed it beautifully and that's what makes me love them. Really appreciate how they can bring some heavy riffs on their music!
my friend sent this to me and you have no idea how excited i got because SOMEONE WAS TALKING ABOUT MY GIRLS!!!!!!
also i will definitely look into ateez now lmao, i've been meaning to for a while but got kinda lazy
also THANK YOU SO MUCH for the recs at the end!!!! i've been trying to find groups with similar music and concepts (because there's only so many times you can repeat the entire discography lmao) and these really helped!!!
Thanks for shining a light on some of Dreamcatcher's accomplishments and contributions!
I love dreamcatcher sm and I'm so glad to see more videos ab them. I also love ghost by dreamnote and I'm even happier it's also getting recognized
Good to see Purple Kiss mentioned here. Addicted to Sweet Juice honestly and their concept is really cool. Love the The Shining influence
And as far as DreamNote goes, I’m sure that you’ve seen by now that their comeback was a cute one.
Dreamcatcher is my fav and the reason I became so interested in K-pop
Here for Dreamcatcher!!! Also agreed with everything here
Oooh I loved this video, it also made me think, another major example of causing such a major shift is Loona!
I wish I could see more of them. but I guess the public wasn't ready yet. plus their output doesn't even have subtitles and you know what it means - they probably set their eyes on the domestic market :((
ps thank you for making this video!
I always thought Where u at is an excellent song. I think the gore in their videos may have overshadowed the group.
1NB stalker is iconic for me
Dreamcatcher are in the same branch as Gfriend, but they branch out with more metal than classical and more dark colors in every aspect (Timbre, visuals et cetera).
Dreamcatcher is the first artist or brand who utilize rock in a different way anyone who knows how rock music sounds wouldn't expect, they are gems
For going and focusin overseas. I think KARA is doung it 1st although its only in Japan. But yet they are the 1 that being aolid there before comeback to Kr
I lowkey think Aespa was influenced by dc too cuz of the concept and how different and grand it is
A THREAD ABOUT SOME OF THE RELATED GROUPS CAUSE I LOVE THEM
Another thing to add about Pink Fantasy!
Thanks to Dreamcatcher, I was able to discover Babymetal, which was their influence in their music style.
5:51 another fun detail to mention: their commitment to the horror concept also extends to their debut date, Friday the 13th January, 2017👻
so true but dreamcatcher has long escaped nugudom, they graduated nugudom since at least 2020 if not 2019
As a DC/EG Stan, I appreciate the comments about their past.
Deja vu clip is what got me into them sadly they havent released a mv that was on par with that since but at least I can appreciate the music.
Thank you for making this video Dreamcatcher is one of my ult groups and I enjoyed watching this video💕💕
Special mention to leed and Ollounder👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It's groups like these two that make me love K-pop.
i just had my dad listen to the first album and he's intrigued (he doesn't listen to kpop/ korean music)
this would be a great video to show a new insomnia! ty
Yessss we love deukae recognition! People need to put some respect on their name cuz damn
Nature with Girls. That M.V was too good.
I love them, I love their genre rock music and metal sounds
A reviewer said "There's no shame in having a formula when it smashes everything to bits like this."
as a fan of both ateez and dreamcatcher you slayed! also your channel reminds me of mera loving the vids so far
Getting compared to mera is easily the best compliment I've ever gotten. Thank you so much!
@@catchingteez Of course! I tried to do the whole Kpop utube thing once, it is not as easy as it looks. Great job!!
There are a couple of songs by AESPA you can toss in there. Next Level, Black Mamba and Savage and Girls
Yes I agree about the groups you listed. I follow them specifically because they remind me of dreamcatcher. I would add rolling quartz to that list. They're an all girl kpop rock band and have even covered good night
So glad there's more videos like this !! My ult for a reason
Great video ❤
Also, I can't believe you missed Rolling Quartz on your list of groups influenced by DC. They did a complete cover of "Goodnight" even going as far as making their own MV version of it. With permission, of course. DC & RQ producers(?) are connected as are HanDong and YeongEun, the drummer for RQ. Please check it out.
I can't believe I forgot them! I haven't seen that cover either, but I'll have to check it out
That cover is pure fire
DC had an incredibly strong Japanese rock influence in their early days
you were really right about ignoring Korean public 🤣
I would say the only other group that went all in on the international side was kard when they debuted in 2016 but I'm not sure if that was intentional or just due to the fact that their music caught on really big in south America
you forgot to mention the Billlie group, a subsidiary of SM, MYSTERY STORY
* Mystic Story
🙂
The talent, the music, the concept, the attitude, they have everything that I love. I'm so proud of them. Mad respect to their company and CEO, yes no one is perfect, they've done bad decisions but they make sure that they learned from it so here we are. Another more yrs of having Dreamcatcher. Dreamcatcher is such an inspiration for a lot of us. Never give up because of failures.
"Dream it and Do it" - Endless night by Dreamcatcher
Mad respect to you for being aware of/talking about Endless Night!
@@plasmakitten4261 oh, endless night is my top 2 song actually
@@iamcielo4022 damnnnn I thought I was the only one. The TASTE
I love both Dreamcatcher and Purple kiss but i didn’t know about all the parallels in sweet juice😮
Great video! My favorite female group!
"I'm not sure how they market"
Luvits: that's the neat part, they don't do any marketing.
