- The most DISTURBING book I have ever read! | Penpal by Dathan Auerbach
Hello again! Today I wanted to talk about one of the most disturbing horror books I've recently read. The book is called Penpal and it's by Dathan Auerbach. It really surprised me with how disturbing, creepy and fun it was. I absolutely loved it and had to share it with you guys in case you hadn't heard of it yet. If you end up reading it, I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. It's definitely one of the best horror books I've read this year. And please feel free to leave any book suggestions below!

This book is so fucking good at it’s subtle foreshadowing and the way that you’d read something and without context it isn’t a typically scary phrase. But knowing what’s happened and all the little clues makes it HIT 👏 FUCKING 👏 HARD 👏 that ending was so insane and I was smiling out of pure terror by the end
Penpal is on my TBR this month! You’ve just made me even more excited to read it.
Yes! I read this recently and loved it! I don’t see it getting recommended ever so I love that you found it and made a video for it. I loved how each chapter was like “whoa wtf”!
A book that made me feel so many different emotions and literally got me teary eyed was The Long Walk by Stephen King. It was easy to connect to the main characters and you are able to feel what they’re feeling…and you feel a sense of loss when they are taken out of the competition. Such a good, thought provoking book!
I have read this book, and I absolutely loved it. When you said that the book was written for you, honestly I can relate to that. That's exactly what I told my sister when I finished reading it. Everything you said, really, is how I feel about the story. So happy that I found someone that shares the same thoughts about the story!!! I adored this video💖
I had this on my list then took it off when doing a TBR purge. You’ve had me re-add it!
Glad to see you posting again, on reddit you can find really creepy and interesting stories so I'm not surprised that this book story originated from reddit
Thanks Anda, I will check this book out , you are so cool ! Keep up the good work!
I don't often have nightmares, but I was listening to NoSleep podcast's dramatization of the original post and I lost ACTUAL sleep. I'll be reading the book closer to Halloween.
This book arrived in the post this morning, and after watching this video, it's jumped to the top of my tbr list!
Penpal is fantastic. I originally read the forum posts, then purchased it when it was released to support the author. It was far better as a novel than I had anticipated!
I just got this book in the mail! So excited to read it
I had seen 1 other youtuber talk about this book. Sounds cool. My Best Friend's Exorcism really got to me. It's a fun coming of age horror novel that goes to some dark and weird places!
I just discovered this channel a few days ago so I'm late to the party, but on the off chance you will still read this comment a year later I do have a recommendation. I had the same reaction as you did here when I first read 'And The Ass Saw The Angel' by Nick Cave way back in the 90s. It's still my favorite book of all time. It's very dark and disturbing, and extremely well written imo, so I think you would probably like it. That's my recommendation to you Anda. Loving your channel btw :)
I read this a month ago and I still can’t stop thinking about it
Very few horror books hit 5-stars for me, but Penpal was perfect. It has remained at the top of my list since I read it last year.
Also, anyone who has read the book AND the reddit forum, is the story longer and does it have more detail? or how is it different in the book?
I just bought this on kindle on your recommendation after seeing it at Barnes & Noble and getting intrigued. Lol. Thank you!
I hope you enjoy it!
Starting this book tonight!
Just ordered my copy off ebay...YAHOOOOO.... Do you know how many books you have gotten me to buy....lol..MANY....all great additions to my library.... Thank you little DUDETTE
Re looking at this book after readying its so good. I love love love this book
I read this book a few years ago and gave it 4/5 on goodreads. Also, Outsiders is one of my favourite books. I am thinking of ending things by Ian Reid and A Separate Peace by John Knowles are (quiet) disturbing books I love.
It makes me so happy to see that more people are still finding this book 10 years after it's release, I found it in 2017 (well, the reddit story, not the actual book) and I read it again at least once a year, one of my favorite stories EVER, this might sound exaggerated and I'm probably just being biased since I'm a fan of the book, but I think it was at the same level as Stephen King, in fact I think it was better than some Stephen King books (I mean not ALL of them are great, even some of the most renowned ones I think were not as good as PenPal)
No, I don't think that's an exaggeration at all. We are all fearful of different things and a story that seems realistic is sometimes much more terrifying than anything supernatural. This book really blew me away. I'm not sure how it differs from the story posted online, but the book is about 200 pages so it might be longer? I'm not sure. Really amazing book though.
Great review. My all time favourite writer is J K Rowling, and all her books make me feel like, "This is the reason to read books." Everyone has read Harry Potter, I will highly recommend checking out her mystery series featuring Cormoran Strike and Robin, starting with 'The Cuckoo's Calling'.
Currently reading this one and let me tell you somethinggggggggg 😩😩😩 I’m scared
Just finished this book. It was pretty good! I went into it completely blind and honestly thought it was going to be an alien abduction story. 😆Boy, was I wrong about that one. Definitely a chilling read.
Interesting sounds disturbing thanks anda
Such a great book, I finished it in one sitting
After this video I'm absolutely sure that Stolen Tongues IS a book you will love :)) It also was a NoSleep post prior :))
My most disturbing book was “Dooefiend” by Donald Goines
I stopped watching because now I want to read the book and don't want to know anymore lol
Do you by any chance have a goodreads? :)
I don't :/ I just keep track of the books I read in a reading journal.
Have you ever read the book of necronomican? Read it. Lol. Good read.
