Been slowly collecting items for 6 years and next year i go!!! I spent 10 years in the army and saved every penny of deployment money to do this. Cant wait
Thanks Matthew. See if you enjoy mountaineering! There are so many amazing mountains out there... just waiting for you and a qualified mentor (either a friend or a professional guide). If looking for a guide, some marks of excellence include AMGA or IFMGA certification. Enjoy and stay safe!
@@OSMAdventures Hello from Afghanistan! I just read your post about your summit experience and could not put my phone down until I finished it! Thank you for sharing your incredible story 🙏🏼
Could you ship things to arrive before you do that would be over weight? I know they sell everything you'd ever need to climb in Katmandu, so is there a used market for clothing and other gear?
You definitely can buy lots and lots of gear in KTM. For new gear, the price is usually a bit more (not lots more) than buying the same stuff in the USA. For used gear, definitely cheaper. Because I wanted to control all the variables and know that my gear worked for me, I chose to bring virtually all gear with me... food was the big exception, virtually all provided by IMG over there. For people not aspiring for the summit, but rather lower elevations, I think the used market can make real sense.
nicely done but i think you might have gone a bit ott with a few things. i'd keep one sleeping bag and put on most my clothes.. so i aint carrying them
That would be an extraordinary decision for a summit climb of Mt Everest. I'm concerned fro you. Please let me know how that works out for your trip to the summit.
K2 is a very challenging peak, more so than Everest in many regards. If you are thinking about it, please choose your team wisely! I am not planning a trip there.
Who makes your soft shell? Also, how is the Peak XV? I just purchased a Mountain Hardware Nilas that I wore on Rainier but I'm interested trying out First Ascent.
Thanks Daniel. I liked the Peak XV pretty well, it did the job, especially because I had plenty of layers on underneath. I have not worn the Nilas, but the point is that if it served you well on Rainier in righteous conditions, you can get away with it on Everest up to Camp 2. It worked well on Vinson too, with temps of about -30F.
Absolutely interesting to listen to you while you walk us through your equipment! What kind of microphone have you been recording your audio with that day? It's extremely good and gave me one more reason to stay.
Thanks. The movement of gear to EBC and then up the mountain was carefully orchestrated by our guiding company, IMG. One duffel went straight to EBC via Russian chopper to Phaplu. The other "trekking" duffel went via helicopter to Lukla with us. If you are climbing Everest, this is all carefully orchestrated well in advance, your guides will explain the protocol. Thanks for your interest!
Great video. The video is about three years old now. How about a follow up on what worked, what didn't what broke? Also, one specific question. Can you please provide more information about the insulating sleeves on your water bottles? Thank you.
Hi. Thanks. Here is the first of two videos from the following year: ruclips.net/video/-sbx80Faves/видео.html Please also see my blog, pottinger.net. Essentially, everything I brought in 2016 worked well!
I have not added up the cost of the gear, because I have accumulated it over about 10 years of preparation. The expedition is expensive for sure... The cost of an expedition to Everest varies widely... part of that depends on how much new gear you need to buy, but the biggest step up is the guiding fee. Please see pottinger.net/osm/2015/03/why-are-you-doing-this/ and www.alanarnette.com/blog/2015/12/21/everest-2016-how-much-does-cost-to-climb-mount-everest/

+OSM Adventures that's 100k there. How much actually did that cost? But really appreciate your time and details on all the equipment. Very helpful. Where's your summit video? How did it go? Love to knwo. Thank you very much for going through the stuff.
+Raffi Boghosian Thanks. My pack was never more than about 25 lbs, thanks to all the support I had from the porters who hauled the rest ahead to camp every day, usually on the back of a yak, sometimes on their own backs! Total kit weighed close to 100 lbs.
+Joe Smith Thanks for asking! Perfectly fine! Until a big earthquake hit Nepal. My blog, if you want more details... thanks for your interest! pottinger.net/osm/
Thank you Bart. Waste management is a serious issue up there. The outfitter I climbed with, IMG, is a leader in mountain stewardship, and leaves the place cleaner than it was before we arrived... not everyone approaches the trip with this kind of ethos. But, no, we do not bring waste bags with us on IMG expeditions, the outfitter does that for us.
Thank you. That would be against the law in Nepal, where Sherpa guides are required for all expeditions. This is for your safety, and for their economy too.

I know you had two expeditions do you ever planned on a 3rd? If not I'd say its understandable but just curious
4th garrison 1st troop Nah, standing on the summit once is enough for me.

A bit, but my wife knows how careful I am up there... and I kept in touch every day.

Dehydrated baby wipes??? I gotta try these!

I’m gonna guess and say all that gear is probably around $25,000?
So, climbing Everest is basically glamping with a high chance of death?
30 % of it is electronic so you could flex later that you got on everest :D typical everest tourism
Just take one sleeping bag problem solved
Please let me know how this works for you on your next Everest expedition, would appreciate your perspective.
What brand of sleeping bags and down booties do you have? Thanks
General Haze I took a Marmot -40 bag and a feathered friends -20 bag. Both performed perfectly.

Yes, a Garmin Fenix 2! Old tech nowadays, but it did well getting me to the summit and home.
