  • For decades, the Mob skimmed untaxed income from Las Vegas casinos, enriching crime syndicates across the country. In 1986, David Helfrey, chief of the Justice Department`s Organized Crime Strike Force in Kansas City, spearheaded the prosecution of several Midwestern Mafia bosses accused of skimming from the Stardust and Fremont casinos. Helfrey will provide insights into the high-profile case that inspired the movie Casino.

I was offered Witness Protection from the Strike Force in KC and turned it down--interesting events and time--I had great respect for the FBI Agents involved but refused their offer--the offer came during a heated exchange with a Special Agent and a DOJ Prosecutor in the basement of the KC Federal Court House at 811 Grand--the 3 of us in a tiny concrete room.. I actually liked the FBI agent I dealt with--a very fiery guy but I still respected and liked him.. I told them NOTHING and demanded my payment for showing up. Back then if you were subpoenaed to the Court House, they had to pay you with a check when you showed up--roughly 40 bucks I think..
The KC Bosses were cunning, smart and extremely violent but if you made them money and were loyal, they treated you well. I had total respect for the Civellas and Willie Cammisano and the sub players--I truly enjoyed them all. Real characters and unique personalities, better than anything in the movies..
People don't truly understand that the KC Outfit ran the Teamsters (KC Local 41) and the Funds (Tens of Milllions) that made the story in the Movie Casino possible--not Chicago or NY. KC controlled the dole to everyone else.
This was a great interview--thanks for posting up.

You're comment is from a year ago so sorry for the late response but, who are you and how were you involved with KC? I hope that is not a prying question. I does not seem like you are hiding from anything. You must have made it out OK, you're still here, at least you were a year ago. Sounds like you have a story to tell, and I guess I'm askin. I hope you got out from underneath all that! That was the last of the truly rough and tough era mob days. Nothing today has as much scope, as that period of time. At least in comparison to the modern description of the mob. I hope you made out OK my friend, you lived through a rough time and if you were that connected you're lucky to be alive. Best to ya!

Interesting, but when someone who is supposed (David Helfrey) to be an expert in the subject gets certain things wrong, it casts doubts about their knowledge and expertise about the subject. As came out in the both the Coroner's report and the Family Secrets trial, they weren't shot and no bat was used on the Spilatros, they were punched and kicked and died by a combination of blunt force trauma and asphyxiating on their own blood in their airways and lungs. "They buried him on the wrong property" While the crew ordered to bury the bodies muffed the job, they weren't ordered to bury him on Aiuppa's property (no boss no matter how crazy would have bodies buried on property they owned). An yes, the crew paid the price for their mistake.
