    Founded in the 1850s in Melbourne: older than American football by a couple of decades. My club essendon is 149 years old. We love a good specky (spectacular mark) .

    For those Americans a mark is just catching it off a kick, when you mark it on someone’s shoulders that is called a specky

    Number 2 was the best Gary Moorcroft he injured his hip and it ended his career

      Facts.. to this day I've yet to see a mark that tops it... many have come close but keeping in mind that Moorcroft was just 5'8" it's not just the best but by a country mile.

    For a mark to be taken, the ball has to have been kicked and travels in the air for 15 meters or more, must not be touched by any other player, and when caught, must be held on to for a reasonable amount of time (time determined by the umpire). If it is held on long enough, no-one touched it, and the ball bounces out when it hits the ground, a mark may still be awarded.
    There was (and still may be) an award given called "Mark of the Year", where the top 3 marks of a given round are voted on to see who took the mark of the round. Then at the end of the season, those marks are voted on, for Mark of the Year. For some years, that award was around $250,000 and a new car.

    Our 'complete' pass is based on control. Basically near enough is good enough.
    In an effort to keep marks in the game

    The umpire deems a mark if he thinks the player had control of the ball, even for a second. Some of these are a bit contentious, but they were all called a mark on the day. Check out the top 50 goals as well. cheers.

    A mark is when you catch it without it touching the ground and has travelled 15m.

    Also the catch is called a mark when the player firsts goes for catch and makes contact with the ball, a supposed mark is made on the ground bellow the player. Hence u will here a term called the man on the mark. That’s where the opposition player stands, if the player going for the catch, completes it.

      The original term "mark" came from back when players used to use the place kick to kick for goal. They would catch the ball and then use their studs to scratch a mark on the ground to designate where the kick would be taken from.

  • @glennpayne704
    @glennpayne704 3 года назад +1

    As long as you hold the ball for a reasonable time it is paid as a mark..

    Americans have a saying that white men can't jump. Well I can tell you that AFL players will outjump any American in football. These are the fittest football players of any code in any country. They can sprint very fast, run many kilometres every game and they certainly can leap almost like superman. These players have a BMI of about 23 but depends on the position they play as many of the players are very tall.
