    What is the benefit of replacing the voltage regulator? Is it a part that is prone to failure? And what happens when it goes bad?

      I usually replace them while I'm in there because it's kind of a "wear part." The old regulators that these use aren't as efficient as more modern 78S05 or switching regulators. That translates to less heat inside the NES which is always a good thing. In my personal NES I use a switching regulator but it did introduce a little bit of ripple in the video. Upgrading to a nice triad power supply took care of it though.
