So I randomly came across this trying to figure out why rhystic study is so valuable. This brought me back to tenth grade and opening up packs, back when foils actually meant something and you knew you were getting something with value. Nabbed a foil Defense of the Heart all those years ago, one of my favorite feelings lol. Anyways, I'll be watching more videos! Love the work

Magic really went to hell in the original Mirrodin -- WotC didn't playtest it well enough and it was horrifically unbalanced such that you couldn't stand a prayer in even FNM events unless you could afford to drop several hundred dollars on Arcbounds and Skullclamps, the art started become standardized without the freedom to explore art styles outside of the "theme" of the blocks. And of course the new frames were introduced.
@@muffinland When they announced the new frames I was really disappointed. I assumed it was just a reaction to change at first and they would grow on me. Now, in 2019, I still think the new frames were an obvious downgrade.

YES. Old mtg cards will always be what people want. I love the borders up to 8th edition.
Rhystic Cave + Stasis deck = amazing. I remember when Keldon Firebombers were junk rares, from a buck to a spike of 7 bucks. still a great card with Dingus Egg

Random note about Prophecy is a Gimmick the set has is you can open up a pack that is 100% foils. Its one in 20 boxes but it can happen.

Probably not lol. Unless you pull big money foils and loads of Rhustic Studies. Even then you more than likely will not break even. Really cool set though

Because the old foiling is good. Modern Magic is violently allergic to "good" anything.
Back then people hated the foiling, they rejoiced when the new foiling came out. They also absolutely hated white border cards...how times change
@@mpellis22 I mean, the majority of people still hate white borders. There is just a fringe group of (very) vocal collectors that go nuts over them. Most white border cards do not command that much of a premium.

They need to bring back these 143 card small sets. with foils back to the 1:100 chance. Make them more chase and harder to find. Remove mythic rarity. Remove planeswalkers.

I wish that they hadn’t stopped making the encyclopedias with all of the cards pictured in them. I realize to make that nowadays would be a huge undertaking but those things were so cool to look through and you could learn about cards that you’ve never seen. A lot of these cards I’ve never had the chance to open and if they ordered play you just aren’t going to come across them
Prophecy was a fun set to play back then, with the goal of having all your lands or opponents lands tapped to get bonuses on cards, during the mana burn era. Happy I have 1 sealed box. Sad to know I bulk sold all my commons and uncommons years ago when Rhystic Study was worth 5 cents.

I opened a box of Prophecy a few years ago and got 9 Rhystic Study cards.
When he pulled the "Foil" card that was awesome. Lol jokes on us. I love watching this guy unpack cards.

This is in response to your video on MJ Holdings million dollar overstock buyout from 2018. I just want to say thank you. Thank you for strangling Wizards empire and destroying the price structure they have with LGS. The system has to crash before it can be rebooted. One day LGS will thrive without selling food and compete with other LGS in the same towns instead of eBay and Amazon. Thank you for your investment into the magic community Rudy..Cold and Capitalistic! LoL

Rhystic Studies in Prophecy is basically Hymn to Tourach to Fallen Empires. The best card in a very weak set.

Probably because prophecy was way better received than fallen empires... people love the nostalgia value of prophecy like me while a lot of people just remember being burned during homelands and fallen empires
Fallen Empires was overprinted to oblivion. I assume Prophecy wasn't. Iirc when Invasion hit no one was buying Prophecy anymore. I sure as heck wasn't. The whole Masques block was weird, they overcompensated from Urza being ridiculously OP and everyone noticed, so we bought very little and maybe that resulted in printing very little as well? Idk.
You glossed over a common spore frog! That's a 3 buck common my guy. Does work in graveyard decks.
Just checked the only non-foil card worthwhile in the entire set is a 15€ uncommon EVERYTHING else, maybe except overburden, is bulk. Kinda sad for a 300€ plus booster box. So even with 8RS he lost about 150€ on the box, so even in an ideal box you're losing a ton of money with legions.

I remember Prophecy was a pretty junk set with its theme of tapping all your lands and easily foiled (pun!) rhystic spells. Good to know the Studies is worth something now, will have to skim through my 20 year old leftover commons for some. Cheers!

"Mint" ones on TCG player are $15 as of writing. Given, mint is defined differently by everyone, but they are certainly out there.
